  • We are so excited to share with you a recap of our amazing time in London in May at the International Food Addiction Consensus Conference (IFACC) just before the Margate Intensive. This conference was put together by world leaders in the research of food addiction. Its purpose was to work towards getting food addiction recognized as a disease in both the DSM and the ICD. In 2021 there was a submission to WHO (the World Health Organization) to accept ‘the harmful use of foods’ as a mental disorder, like other substance use disorders, but related to certain types of foods’ as the substance’. This submission was rejected. In response to the rejection an International Consensus Building committee was formed which Amanda was invited to be part of. The committee aimed to harness the collective insights of experts in the field to review what could be agreed about the subject of ‘addiction-like symptoms related to food. The conference in May was to release the results of the work the committee has done over the last year. The committee came away with two main areas of focus, the next submission to the WHO and conducting and funding further research. SHiFT is able to contribute directly to this research.
The speakers at the conference included Dr. Robert Lustig, Dr. Nicole Avena, Dr. Vera Tarman, Michael Moss, Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson and other renowned opinion leaders in the field, sharing their experience and perspectives. The recordings for these presentations at the IFACC have been made available, and there’s a link below where you can access them for a small donation. You also have free access to the Consensus Statement at the link below.
