The world really needs this message. We are so distracted by ‘things’ that we forget about focusing on ourselves, that’s been my experience. I feel the happiest when I feel free and I feel the most freedom when I am living in the moment and not ‘needing’ anything. I love the quote ‘less stuff, more adventure’.

@Ariane you can break the habit as I have. I realise that I wanted to feel differently and those things I bought made me feel like someone else. I was also scared to wear my pretty dresses and bags because I might damage them and wanted to save them for ‘special occasions’ only. I have so many things I’ve never worn and they all feel overwhelming. Journaling has really helped and it might sound weird but focusing on getting to know myself better has helped me want things less. You can overcome any challenges in life, I have definitely overcome a lot. I’m rooting for you! Wishing you so much happiness and peace 💕

I developed a serious shopping addiction during the pandemic, mostly to counter the boredom. It just felt like getting a package, mostly clothes and accessories, was the only thing to look forward to. At the beginning, I told everyone I thought it would last a year. I never imagined that I would still be only isolation, except for essential errands, now, after beginning on February 1, 2020 (I have some significant risk factors). Now I have a wardrobe big enough for four women. I have made some, but not a lot of, progress in slowly this down. I’m not going to pass anything on, with a few small exceptions, I love everI got, that’s something, I suppose.

I also developed my addiction during the pandemic. I loved getting a new package with clothes even though I didn't really have anywhere to wear them. I've started my decluttering journey and listed over 230 pieces on eBay. My closet and dresser are so much thinner it's frightening how much I had accumulated and wasn't even wearing. Things are selling slowly but I am getting them out of my house thankfully!

I had a terrible spending problem when I was younger. I spent all my money on clothes and other stuff, ran up all the credit cards and bounced cheques all over the place. After some therapy, I discovered that I had a huge hole in my life and had to make a lot of changes. Today, I’m debt-free and have a handle on my spending. I wish I’d had the insight that you’re finding when I was your age. Good for you! Hugs from Canada.

I think the end really summed it up for me. The part where she says (paraphrasing here) “never have I ever cared what I look like when I’m traveling something”
That’s precisely the root of my shopping addiction. I feel so ugly and self conscious all the time, I’m convinced only the next piece will make me feel better. That if only I get that one coat or that one pair of pants or that blazer or those boots, that’s what will solve my issues with feeling so self conscious alllll the time.

Mindfulness is the key for any kind of addiction you may have. Practicing Mindfulness is the best thing I have done for myself. Though I'm still struggling with my up and down mood, i have seen my improvement.
My husband always say to me "make it simple". He is truly someone I can always learn from in this aspect. Make it simple. Compulsive shopping addiction can be understood simply as emotional spending. And mindfully, consciously observe your emotions, watch how it wants you to sabotage your life, empty your pocket and ruin your self-worth. Never feed it.
Mindfulness is the key. Remember that everyone :)
And one more piece fo advice is to get rid of FOMO. Yay. Fighting!!

I can relate to your childhood story- my parents were the same way. Although minimalism and appreciating experiences instead of materialistic things makes sense as an adult, I often wonder if my shopping and divulging sweets habits stem from a deeper impact of my childhood. Maybe I’m buying things for myself as an adult, because I didn’t get presents as a child for birthdays. Maybe I’m eating ice cream for dessert after each dinner, because sweets were never allowed in the house; and on occasions my parents allowed sweets as a form of reward for getting good grades. Ultimately it is up to me to gain control of my life as decisions I make will impact my life on and forward.

Wow! Your parents were way ahead of their time! I really appreciate their idea of a "travel gift"! My parents were not big gift givers either and even though I do remember getting some gifts sometimes, I always remember the best times of my life were doing things with my parent! All kids really ever want is to be with their parents. I don't think it is bad to buy things, although I prefer minimalism. But, as a parent, if I had to choose between a gift or a vacation, or just a special place to spend with my children, that's a no brainer. Also, I think when you become a minimalist, you tend to feel freer like when you were a kid and you thought about playing and doing fun things. Minimalism is a freeing experience from material items that I may worry about to a feeling of freedom of those material items and free to "play or relax". ❤️

I have been trying to watch many different videos on this topic. Having a shopping addiction , trying to declutter, letting go. When I had moved out of my parents house and in with my bf I had soo much stuff. That was a year ago. Even though I've gone through and decluttered some.. I've realized that some of the stuff I had bought and never been touched had been sitting there and sitting there for years. My bf doesn't understand this shopping problem and even helped me get rid of some things. He's patient with me but I don't want this to become a bigger problem one day. I know it's just stuff but when I was packing up to move out on my own.. I started crying throwing some of the stuff out. I didn't even understand why. I'm so lost about this whole shopping addiction and why it's such an emotional thing for me.

So amazing.. I needed this video so much. It took me a while to realize that I'm a shopping addict. I live in Brazil and here the price of things has gone up a LOT in the last 12 months. Now I can see the impact of my purchases on my budget. Thanks for the video. This inspired me to make a list of questions so I can ask myself whenever I want to buy something new.
(Sorry for my English, I'm still learning the language).

This video is one of the most important I've watched.
At the beguining of 2019 I felt this urge to change my spending habits. I was no longer feeling the hype of getting new clothes or shoes, so I decided to not buy a single thing apart from food or gas to my car.. I ended up the year feeling proud and happy and realizing that I had quite an amount of clothes that I never wore. So 2020 came, along with the pandemic and I was leaving in joggers..I realized that I had to declutter my wardrobe because there were pieces that I would never wear again, some with 20 years and I had gain weight as well due to my menopause. I saved so much money..And this year I didn't buy either and decluttered some more..and I still ask myself how is it possible to acumulate so much..I feel so light..
Thank you for sharing your experience..
    Much love from Portugal!! 🤗🤗

It helps when you keep in mind a long term goal like for me moving overseas and cringing and really deciding what I want to take with me and how much I really will leave behind and will be getting rid of. It also helps to save money for big purchases are oral surgery and braces for my daughter. Thanks. Take care and stay safe.

I'm ADHD so I just got into perfume collecting . I tend to engross myself into a hobby or two per year and engross myself so much until I am sick of it. I am becoming sick of having a ton of perfumes, but it's still a bit of an obsession. I've never collected anything before. I recently started to question my motives and I ageee that this collecting is not serving my higher purpose or goals in life. In fact they are a distraction and a energy battery drain.

Thank you for this! Making lists helps me. My wish lists, and once I do purchase, I rate my purchases . Has it been a good buy, do I use it, It makes me think twice before purchasing. I also have limited myself to purchasing clothes in 4 colours. Colours that are neutral and go together. If I see something I like but it’s not in the colours I chose to limit myself, I do not buy it. Easy and simple way to buy less.

I used to be a hoarder and a maximalist! so far it's been a month of being a minimalist and I've been doing A LOT of decluttering, the amount of work it's taking and the fact im still not done, is making me realize how much uncessary stuff I had, throughout this time I've made multiple full cab drives to drop off donations to thrift stores, and through selling stuff I've made a lot of money, as much as this process can be really overwhelming, the closer I get to the finish line the more free I feel, even though it's only been a month of being a minimalist it's completely changed me as a person and my life, I can feel at ease knowing what's in my home and I'm more mindful of what comes in and out, I can highly recommend becoming a minimalist it makes life so much easier and more focused, so if your considering it, do it! what made me become a minimalist is moving, realizing how much stuff id been hoarding the boxes where overwhelming and it made me feel horrible! so I made it clear that 2022 was going to be different, and so far it has been dramatically different cause of my full hearted effort and persistence, becoming a minimalist is one of the many steps I've taken to improve my life 🌱 people like you have really helped me in my journey on knowing where to start and what to do, so I really appreciate these videos from the depths of my heart 🙏🌱

I am so guilty because I bought a number of things since the start of the challenge but I truly am more mindful of what I buy now. I too had to stop and admit that I had an addiction just like you. The things I bought were nothing expensive but to be honest with you i use to live comfortably without alot of them so i had to stop and be more mindful❤

I'm really struggling because I've moved to a different climate, a new home, I have gained some much needed weight, and I have started a new job, so now replenishing my wardrobe and furnishing my house has become my obsession so that I can feel more "settled". I'm also very creative and have strong "visions" and ideas for things. I'm having a hard time just taking it slow and accumulating things for my new body and environment organically. I'm hunting way more than I should because I feel emotionally and physically unsettled. I know I should just let things come to me naturally instead of seeking so much. I mostly shop at thrift stores and discount stores because that's my budget, but it makes it to where the things I'm looking at might be one of a kind or impossible to find later, so I feel compelled to grab them while I have the chance. I really have some practicing to do to stop getting so hyperfocused on ideas that I accumulate too much too quickly.
