As a young German, I listened to these guys and other Aussies until the cassette tape broke down. Backpacked through Australia in the 80s and fell in love with the country. Took 15 years until I uprooted and moved down under. Proud Aussie since and you guys played a part!
It feels like such a shame that liberals sold out this country and conservatives are trying to keep it together. I was born and raised here and I’m almost done with the place. Now I’m longing for my conservative home in Europe. Without family values it has become a haven for perverts. Easy pickings for China to come and buy up/steal.
@@mayatiita1 You do realize the conservative party are the ones trying to sell coal to China and they're the ones selling you out. The same thing is happening where I live in New Zealand. Australia is turning into China and India and is burning but I would say its more the conservatives fault than the liberals.
Welcome to Australia. Both major parties are globalist shills in Australia one spends your money than gets more off the bank. The other says tighten your belts sells it to the banks we all lose from both of them we are only salves in our own nation.
I am unfortunately American but l have been an Icehouse fan for 42 years. Great Southern Land always resonated with me as a loner kid, and now that l am almost 60 with everything and everyone l loved gone, l have chosen to embrace my loneliness, like in Buddhist teachings...we are born alone and die alone...in between l walk alone, like a primitive man.
@@geoffreylogsdon162 I wish I had someone I could talk to who is experiencing this. I am 40 years of age and not quite at that point in my life, but I'm already dreading it. Long, long time ago, I heard a piece of the song "Great Southern Land" on TV, it was background for some juice commercial. That was just about 10 seconds of the video, second refrain with desert shots. I was 12 years old kid in ex Yugoslavia, but song left very deep impression on me. It was original, evocative and a little bit mysterious. I was watching commercials on TV just to hear those 10 seconds of the song, not knowing who was splaying it. First, I was thinking that was David Bowie's song, because of similarity of the voice (Bowie was at the top those days with Let's dance LP), but soon I realized that is not. It seemed to me that it took ages until I cought the song on the radio. DJ said "That was very interresting Australian band called Icehouse and their hit Great Southern Land". Eureka! Because of that early strong impression, "Great Southern Land" was my association every time when Australia was mentioned. I managed to record the song on cassette from the radio, but the video was so hard to see. Thanks to RUclips, now every time I watch the video, I am again 12 years old boy, dreaming of the Great southern land.
Nostalgic. How hollow it is to think of missing those days living with limited resources and yet quest to live life contented was the simple motto. A ten seconds hunt was interesting to read. 💪👏👏👏👍
Young Einstein. This music touched our hearts many years ago in the movie. Great Southern Land is so.,...... awesome. Thank You from this American Farm Family!
This song - played live by Icehouse - under the sails of the Sydney Oprea House - with giant lanterns floating across the harbour - surrounded by 2 million fellow Aussies - in the dying moments of the old millennium just before the sky exploded. Without a doubt, the most iconic memory of my life.
Your comment is amazing. The imagery used to describe such an incredible experience with this song as the musical score. Well done! I may follow your channel just to see how you write about other things. Bravo!
I’m a lifelong fan of this song and video. No other band captured my imagination more as a child than you, for it was my first exposure to Australian culture. To rewatch this was a heart rendering moment with some tears. Thank you!!!
When I was a kid Young Einstein was playing on the tv and during the end credits this song just got me. Not until the technology to DL music came along was I able to hear it again. I have always loved this song
Rutherford: If I was on a train traveling at the speed of light, and I traveled from the back carriage to the front carriage, why, I'd be traveling faster than the speed of light! Einstein: No, you wouldn't.
This song is a permanent reminder of how lucky I am that my parents migrated to greatest country on earth and to be fortunate enough to be born and raised here❤️🇦🇺
@calamarikid666..so lucky the Japanese didn't achieve their (attempted passionate) takeover of our country back in WW2 eh?....but now they Our Friends :)
I remeber this song being playe down at Sydney Harbour at dawn on New Years Day 2000. There was an Aboriginal guy playing the digeridoo on the top of the Sydney Opera House along withe song that morning as well. Awesome memories.
What you just described is the most Australian thing I’ve ever heard of lol! “An aboriginal guy playing the diver idol on top of the Sydney Opera House”... it would only be more Australian if there was a white guy up there with him cooking up some shrimp on the barbie!
Back in 1990 I used to go to Humpty Doo Primary School in the Northern Territory and we had to sing this song as part of our music lessons....was hooked on Icehouse ever since.
Reading all of the comments here I am glad to be in the company of others who feel that this powerhouse of a song and band is a remarkable treasure. I partied in the 80s as a teen and we were lucky to have some beautifully influential bands that made a massive impression on so many of us. Love hearing the stories from across the globe on how music has painted part of our souls with a special memory.
Heard this song ages ago at the end of a Yahoo Serious movie. Been listening ever since! But I wish they had taken more advantage of Australia itself to exemplify this song in the video. I was there 20 years ago and I’ve never forgotten what a brilliant country it is!!
Happy Australia daYYyyyyyy! Iva, your still gorgeous. Thank you for your music and memories. Driving to Ayres Rock and playing this song - happy memories !

I loved this song when I was a teenager and traveled often on the south coast (south of Sydney) as far as Batemans Bay. When I lived in Kiama and my 4 children where very young I often traveled north past Sydney as far as Brisbane. When the kids where older I started to travel inland, I lived in Jamberoo. Now my kids are all grown up and I live in Perth. Western Australia is massive and this song just seems to be more and more relevant the older I get and the more I travel.
Golddamn I love icehouse, one of my favorite bands of all time, they have a sound like no other! I thank my dad for raising me to listen to good music!
Love this, heard this first time in the eighties, sound has never faded from then. I'm listening in this horrible year of 2020, makes me smile of years' gone by.
