  • A British-Canadian animated series from 1998 that I took a chance on one day... and I liked it so much I dropped everything and made a whole striking video about it. I hope this show has the same effect for other people, too!

Bob and Margaret aired in México on Adult Swim, PEOPLE HATED IT! this was not the raunchy humor and anime that teens watched adult swim for, but the people behind the programming on Adult Swim, loved trolling them with it, they made Bob and Margaret marathons, used it to fill the schedule and made many bumpers telling stuff like "You have asked us to remove Bob and Margaret and air more anime, this will be known as the Bob and Margaret Chanel"

The popularity of Bob and Margert's run on Global makes a lot of sense. My first exposure to B&M was actually through my grandma. She caught it on Global one night and told me she found an animated show she actually liked, that was better than that "silly Simpsons" I'd watch everyday after school (Fox would air a lot of early 2000 reruns at the time, it was pretty silly stuff). Despite not taking that claim seriously and writing off the show as a "Grandma show" until YTV's airings, she was basically right!
On the topic of the show's transition to Canada, I remember thinking it was revolutionary at the time YTV first aired it. Too many adult animated shows would tease major course altering storylines that would ultimately amount to nothing, yet here was Bob and Margret doubling down on real change. Seeing it for the first time, I thought the feel and dynamic in Canada helped to inject a new energy to the series that could have grown potentially stale had remained on-course. As a Canadian, I thought it was great seeing more relatable occurrences happening in the plots and how entertaining it was to see Brits adjusting to our ways of life, not to mention more Cookie and Melvin!
Speaking of Cookie, Jayne Eastwood's first voice role I really took an interest in was her unseen waitress character you'd hear closing up the dinner that Freaky Stories took place in. I always liked to think that the two shows somehow took place in the same universe, hahah!

Yeah, I initially wrote B&M off as "unexciting", but after watching it, well, you know!
And yeah, I'll give it to the Canada seasons for actually sticking to a big change and presenting new opportunities for the duo. I still think there could've been some more stories told in the UK, but going to Canada made for a pleasant surprise, and them being in Mississauga also hit home for me personally. I also gotta see/hear more of Eastwood's work - I remember when I was rewatching B&M before making this video, my Mother was watching a movie with her in it, and I instantly recognized that voice of hers when I entered the room. Also showed up in a Degrassi while I was channel surfing one night haha.

This show was brilliant. I remember watching the first 2 series on Channel 4 in the UK when i was like 12/13. Also series 3 and 4 were shown in the UK on a channel called FTN if anyone remembers that around 2003 as i had never seen the Canadian series prior to that. I remember on FTN it was shown alongside Dilbert.

It's so wild to see and hear of a show that was never really on my radar here in the UK (Channel 4 wasn't on much growing up), and then to learn casually that British comedy legends Harry Enfield and Andy Hamilton were involved. Enfield probably most famous for his own sketch comedy show and Hamilton probably most famous for creating part ad-libbed sitcom Outnumbered, but to me he's always the creator and lead of Old Harry's Game as the voice of Satan

I miss this show... I haven't seen it in years. Which is funny considering I saw this when I was in my teens. Great video dude, it was quite the insightful interview. The show also reminds me how a lot of media kind of forget how people are, it is a sort of grounded experience I don't think many really know how to write for. Especially in anime that are considered "slice of life" or have elements thereof.

I think the video title should be changed to reflect the show's status as a British-Canadian co-production. I know you elaborate in the description, but we don't need more people who only read headlines/titles assuming that the show was entirely Canadian. This is one of the rare instances where you'll actually see the collab acknowledged in the credits: it literally says "A British and Canadian co-production". My understanding is that most of the money came from Canada but that most of the cast and crew came from Britain, so it's kinda like when people call Grand Theft Auto an American franchise or Lord of the Rings an American film trilogy (America's boundless resources have enabled it to culturally asset strip the significant and unique native properties of the other Western nations, but that's a different issue, albeit one that creates a lot of resentment towards the US). That Canadian funding was the reason they _had_ to move to Canada in season 3, even if it came across as a masterstroke of animated sitcom innovation at the time.
Still, I don't mind sharing credit with Canada. CANZUK and Europe should collaborate in various permutations more often to compete with the hegemonic strength of Hollywood and their limitless supply of the US dollar. They should ideally also try to sort out the entire busted "country of origin" system in film, whereby it's almost entirely about the money, which renders essentially every big project "American" in a nominal sense and skews any attempt to quantify success (Lord of the Rings is considered a US-NZ co-production and the UK isn't even on the list, which is indicative of a broken system). Looking at the list of the hundred most valuable media franchises, it's all from America, Japan, and Britain (no other country has more than one property IIRC), but even though we're in third place by some distance, it'd help if not EVERY single one of ours was labelled "UK/US", including Harry Potter and LOTR. I can only imagine how it feels for the European countries who only have a single entry to see their local glory stolen. It's enough to make one believe in Japanese-style isolationism.
As for the demure, muted, droll, slightly glib humour of the show, it naturally went down a treat with Britons who were sufficiently open-minded to the concept of adult-oriented cartoons (as it should, since it's a very British style of comedy). It was gratifying to hear that Canadians share our more subtle - and, at the risk of sounding patronising, cerebral - sense of humour. (Ofc, that's a broad stereotype, but they exist for a reason, and psychology/sociology research consistently demonstrates that virtually all stereotypes are rooted in some degree of truth -- also that people tend to _under_estimate their validity. Nonetheless, there are many smart US sitcoms.)

Yeah, it's a British-Canadian coproduction. And I think the video title should've reflected that. At least as much of the cast and crew were British as Canadian. And most of the best episodes of the best season (i.e. 1) were written exclusively by the British co-creator. Not that I wanna turn this into a war, especially when we should be united against the hegemonic juggernaut that is the US entertainment industry.
