  • In this third interview with Rabbi Rabenold, 1st Force Recon Company, we discuss his first tour in 1967, specifically the role of 1st Force Recon during Operation Union I and Union II. Rabbi describes some of the fighting, but also a lot of the tactics of how Force Recon operated on larger operations. Rabbi recalls the use of supporting arms from 105s, 155s, and air support, and how recon teams used them extensively during the operation, while NVA troops could be soon moving through the Antenna Valley.
He also recalls varying NVA uniforms from camo utilities, black pj's, green, brown, grey, and khaki uniforms, and finding a set of green khaki uniforms in a captured NVA pack. Rabbi then goes into some of the traps encountered between April and May 1967 and some of the oddities that were sighted during the period, such as hearing the NVA on Marine radio frequencies and watching an NVA soldier on a bicycle attempting to out-pedal an artillery fire mission.

My unit was Delta1/5, 1st Marine Division and the Union operations would be my last as I was wounded twice with the second wound sending me home. While I was in the hospital I was presented the Silver Star for my actions in the Unions. If interested, I have written a book-memoir that covers these operations from start to. finished. It is called, "The Best of the Best The Fighting 5th Marines. Vietnam." Amazon has it.
