2018 BMW 118i (F20) - Is this German RWD warm hatch a used gem in 2023?

  • "They don't make 'em like they used to" is a going to be something said of the F20 1 Series (and the F21). Like its predecessor, the E87, this BMW F20 forged its own path with sweetly agile handling, a unique Shooting Brake-like silhouette, and a certain effortless cool factor that might be missing today (depending on who you ask).
    All those things are still true in 2023, 5 years after this 2018 example first took to our roads, but could be had now for much less. Tempted?
    BMW abandoned RWD and went with MINI-derived underpinnings for the newest 1 Series, so the F20 is immortalised as the final example of the breed.

    Currently own a 120i and after 2++ years with it im very happy. Handling is its real forte. really fun to chuck it into corners and rwd push on corner exits is really addictive. Maintenance is really not bad if u know what youre doing and have preventative maintenance mindset.

    I owned the exact same car and is such a joyful ride. A very well balanced chassis and a whole lot fun to drive even when you’re not going fast. It’s BMW in its purest form. If only it comes with a stronger engine, it would be perfect. A RWD hatchback. A last of its kind unfortunately

      2 of us in our team almost bought an F20 125i but on both occasions got swiped away from under us by a cash buyer. Still hurts

      sadly the m140i was not officially in Malaysia. and the price for recon car was out of mind. @@laurenschristiaens4333

    This car is very light on its feet and fun. The M sport suspension handling is brilliant but shyte in terms of ride comfort esp somewhere like Smart Tunnel is enough to cause you a super sore back.

      Agreed! And the DASH and the DUKE highways. It's like Malaysian roads just forces us to buy soggy SUVs :(

    I’m looking for a F20 LCI …. Any recommendations? 120i or 118i?

      118i using B38 engine, which is 3 potter. 120i using N13 (peugeot prince engine), 4 potter. both got it's own pros and cons. B38 is newer engine but lower power output compared N13. Depends what you're looking for. If performance, maybe you can search for 120i. But make sure the owner done all the wear and tear parts. N13 famous for engine oil leaking.

      @@aimanwhat so far how ya the maintenance? Planning to buy 118i also

    • @aimanwhat
      @aimanwhat 8 месяцев назад

      @@daniasyraf2161 maintainence wise, if normal oil change around 300-500, depends on workshop. if possible try to buy direct from owner, that way you can know what has been changed, what need to be change. saw few ads in FB people selling this car. maybe you can try to contact them if you find direct owner.
      118i with b38 engine got common issues with coolant leaks, might be the hose, the expansion tanks or worst is the oil filter housing. but it's a wear and tear parts, plastic part will eventually broke overtime.
      apart from that, i can say b38 is quite reliable. no major issues so far, apart from the oil filter housing (for my car at least, and finger cross, no other major parts too, haha).

    This car likes to leak coolant

    • @istvan.design
      @istvan.design 3 месяца назад +3

      The plastic coolant housing is bad, can be upgraded to aluminium, it can be changed together with hoses (make sure the cooling hose from coolant tank to engine is changed to racing grade silicone), intake has to be taken off though. Costs around ~1-1.5k to do, even less if you have the time and patience to take the intake off yourself.
