Just fixed mine today it wasn't as severe but sometimes it would do that once or twice, or it would take a while until the ignitions lights lit up or it would start but with the steering light flashing and saying "Steering lock defective" error. I removed the steering column after that the steering lock, opened it up, replaced both micro switches inside, reassembled everything, and now it looks like the issue is gone. Fingers crossed it won't show up again anytime soon!

The most affordable way to resolve this is by doing it this way. The "official" is to take to to VW and have it repaired there, they will replace the lock and reprogram. Many say it's a "Steering wheel lock/Ignition" problem, but like you I'm not getting that message. this looks like the classic steering lock problem alright. There may be a cheap fix for you, it seemed to help a lot of people. @@KarolisGustas3 In my case the problem was inside the actuator's motor it's self. The contact blades for the rotor were almost gone, making the contact intermittent at best. The microswitches were fine. I did not find a replacement motor anywhere so i had to replace the steering lock at a VW service. Sorry for the late reply. All the best.
Happened to me yesterday. Push key in, get orange steering light, mfd says ‘Turn Steering Wheel’. Trying of course. Eventually i get ‘steering still locked’ on mfd. if i keep trying the whole dash then goes dark and unresponsive. Battery reset Dash responsive again. Try again, still problems Eventually a call out service started it by basically trying over and over again, moving steering wheel about etc and it came free. Now very cautious with this car as dont want to be caught when in a hurry or well away from home. Damn

I took the car in 2 weeks ago and they replaced the immobilizer and this has not happened again since. The steering column also doesn't make that mechanical click sound anymore when I insert the key either. The car starts consistently every time now. Very happy.
Brandon C Another update... I still have not had a single problem since the immobilizer was replaced. Almost 4 months now and the steering column hasn't made that mechanical sound, nor have I had a problem starting the card.
Brandon C My dad is having the same issue with his B6. The car also displays an error regarding the steering (he is abroad now, so I didn't see how the car acts). The car is due to service today at VW dealership. I was concerned that it may be an injector fault, since it is the BKP. In the end, how much did the new immobiliser cost?

You have to open the gear knob cover and manually unlock it, very fiddly and not easy. Pain in the ass as mine also have the electronic park brake. Bad experience.

Its the immobilizer. I've had it where the car wouldn't start, and sometimes where the car started, but immediately turned off. Have the immobilizer replaced. Its about $350.
Do this and it will start , put the key half way ,enough just to turn power ,do not go all the way ,leave it like that half way ,wait 8 seconds untill the ping ping sound ends ,then push all the way down to start ,,bingo

i have solve it the problem it is in the ignition it's need to be replace it or you can do the simple connection between the ignition and the + cable if you want i can give u the dilates it's easy and cost u 000 no thing but u will have to make an switch to torn on - off
Stupid German design. On top of that you have to take the steering wheel out to get to the stupid thing...I took mine out cleaned the contact points and it worked..

found the info there that this error can be caused by low voltage. Charged the battery and problem solved.
Same problem here, sadly it's not the microswitches, i have checked them and they are ok.
