ever one has different hair we don't have your hair 👋👋
Yup, that's why at 03:54 I said "don't be afraid of coconut oil, if coconut oil works for you, keep using it. There's no reason for you to stop using it if you like it. This video is just for those wondering why I stopped using it." 👌🏾
Camia Jackson damn she roasted u
Naptural85. k...
Camia Jackson hahahaha... it was such a useless comment.... lol. Im surprised she even bothered responding to u. Lol. Ofc, her video is for those who might relate to her reasons. I love coconut oil, it works for me, I watched it because I was curious and wanted to see if I could relate to it. I did not, but it was still good to know. I might one day give it as an advice to a friend who might have the same coconut oil sensitivity problem. It never hurts to learn something new you now....
Camia Jackson ok she said that
so we're not going to address the elephant in the room. 💆
hehe
😂
I'm done! lol!!!

My hair LOVES coconut oil. And it's the ONLY oil that actually soothes and heals my scalp when other products drive it crazy.
Same
Same. I use it for cooking and smoothies. For my hair and on my skin too. 😎 The extra virgin coconut oil I mean.
same i love it in my hair
Same, my hair feels so much more manageable after using
Thank you. I’ve been wanting to use it as my natural grows.
It took all of 9 seconds for me to pause this video because my eyes just happened to wander over to a blue elephant with tight curly hair 😂😂😂
Lolololol same I got totally distracted lol
Instantly!! Lol
me too...I was like huh
exactly loooool
Same 😂😂😂😂
Coconut oil made your hair brittle because it is full of protein. Overdoing protein makes your hair brittle. Coconut oil penetrates strands. I experienced the same thing.
That's true. She is protein sensitive. Protein sensitive shouldn't use it. Interesting. Something to consider. My hair loves it, but everybody's hair is different.
*****
Yeah. I personally think stuff that's meant to be eaten shouldn't really go on the skin or hair, simply because of those issues. It may work for some, but in most cases I've seen it just didn't work out. I might use coconut/olive oil based products meant specifically for the exterior body, but as for interior, I just take capsules, or eat what's meant to be edible.
*****
Oh, definitely. Too much of anything can be bad for you, that's for sure. Lol ;)
Very informative comment, I completely forgot about that.
Yup. i have protein sensitivity. i cant use coconut oil that much
coconut oil is not for everyone
Yahel Israel only if you are allergic. If it doesn’t work then they are doing it wrong like 99%of all youtubers
@@k8lynmae That's not true, you can use it right but sometimes certain people's hair won't soak it up. I also break out from it very bad.
@@k8lynmae I know everybody has opinions but that's just not true. Coconut oil does not work on a lot of people's hair, it actually causes it to become dry and brittle, not because they're allergic to coconut oil, but because it just doesn't work for them. It's not a deemed fact that it will always moisturize everybody's hair everybody's hair is different.
I think maybe it doesn't work on afro hair or 4C hair. It does wonders for Indian hair.
@@brightstar8859 no it works on Afro texture. There are plenty of RUclips who use it, but she actually is using it wrong or had an allergy. Using it as a prep, then shampooing it out, is probably the issue here, because the other Black youtuber that use it, dont use it like this, and have never had a suffering from it. She choose shampooing over just using coconut oil with the water method.
UPDATE: the Green Beauty Channel recently addressed why Coconut Oil makes some of our hair dry. Low porosity types (like me) with tight hair cuticles tend to have this issue, especially if they use a lot of it.
Im listening -but my eyes kept looking at the elephant in the room. Lol
mine too. Rocking the hell out of that wig

Lol same here!

Me TOOO!
Please watch the entire video. She said she may have ABUSED coconut oil. Too much of anything is NOT good. Coconut oil is amazing. But like any other product, it is not for everyone.
I can't use coconut oil on my daughter's hair either. I could never use it in her hair. Just like Naptural85, I notice the difference immediately and I can't use anything that has coconut oil in her hair. If I use a product and her hair starts to react, then I see that the ingredient had coconut oil in it! It doesn't matter the amount, her hair just does not like coconut oil. She's fine with shea butter and olive oil is so nice in her hair.
+McKay Andrew sometimes you develop an allergy when using something for too long. I am having this problem with henna lately.
Lady Tamara G. maybe it was when she dyed it?
Katicha Benavides
I just did one deep condition ONCE and it ruined my hair. It feels thinner, when I shower I cannot run my fingers through my hair, my hair gets super tangled in and out of the shower. And when I run my hands through my dry hair it feels super thin. Never using it again. I hope my hair can bounce back and it isn't ruined.
I just love how humble your responses are to the ones who are being rude in the comments. This is your personal experience, and what we fail to understand is that everyone is different. Just because your hair loves coconut oil, doesn't mean that mine does.. and that's okay.
I use coconut oil and my hair has been growing like crazy. I think, it's the fact that you might use it too much like you said. I use it sometimes and other times I use almond oil and olive oil with and without coconut oil. And my hair has improved a lot, so i don't know maybe it's the over usage.
I like the elephant wearing the wig in the background. LOL
Lol I just noticed wtf
That was the first thing I noticed.
I just peeped that😂😂 curls poppin LOL
I thought I was the only one who noticed😂😂
yep!
Coconut oil always dries my hair up. Thank God I thought I was alone
yes like SUPER dry
Coconut oil does nothing for my hair as well. It just sits on top making my hair feel greasy rather than soft.
same!! i never saw any improvement when using coconut oil
Same. It does nothing for my hair or skin.
yess! same here! my hair started feeling like barn hay😳
I don't think I'll ever completely eliminate coconut oil. I think it is normally everyone's go to oil and that can be a problem if it is abused. There are so many butters now that experimenting with different things is a good way to go.
Taura Helms I only pre poo with it
Yeah Taura, your hair does get USED to certain products and it stops working. Abusing anything can make your body develop a 'sensivity' to it, so why not your hair. You only use 'protein' or EXCESS moisture until you figure out what 'balance' your hair needs and as you age, everything else ages and your body shifts in it's needs... so why not your hair?
My hair Hates it too! Made my hair extremely dry!!!

One more time and the whole world makes boom!!!
I was reading comments while watching the video and when I read this I couldn’t stop hearing it lol
😂 I'm not sure if she is trying to talk about coconut oil 😂😂😂 I like the video anyway!
What ?! I use coconut oil and my afro has never felt better and it makes it grow faster. Braiding is 10 times easier too
my hair was falling out so I used coconut oil to strengthen it and it worked.
Thank God u bought the original coconut oil, there are many fake coconut oil out there which has given bad name to the original coconut oil,
Totally agree with this! I was using it on my face, hair and baby, but then she started reacting to it and I realised Coconut oil really wasn't all that. I stopped right there and then.
Hi, Patricia!!!
Hey Pat!
Shea butter is where it's at.
If we do that we are going to be too wasted to remember not to use coconut oil. lol
Parachute Coconut Oil is different from others brands TRUST ME!! Don't give up on coconut oil!!!!
Hey Guys!! I use a lot of other oils, so it was pretty simple to just omit it from my recipes, but for those times when it's the only oil I use (ie. my 25 minute co-wash) I'll use sweet almond oil or avocado oil instead! 💗💗💗
Thanks for the tip Whitney! 💕😊
Avocado oil works great for me.
I found out I was allergic to coconut years ago, and I'm that girl who stands in the middle of the aisle reading ingredients on everything(even chapstick). The first time I accidentally bought shampoo with coconut oil, my head was burning and blistering, then I checked the ingredients...Coconut oil. I hate you had to go through this, but I'm glad you figured out the cause. I'm still following your awesome hair tips, and my hair is steady growing healthy 💝💝💝💝
I always hated coconut oil. By the way your hair and makeup looks really good. I like the way your hair is shaped. :)

is shea moisture a bad hair line the reason why I ask because it made my hair dry
Latoya Nance Depends on how you use the products and which products you use, but no the whole hair line isn't bad.
You might be allergic to coconut oil my friend went to the doctors for the same reason, and that was it, I know you said this but still, coconut oil is amazing!!!!
I stopped using coconut oil because of this video five years ago, and my hair is the longest and thickest it has ever been. I was definitely one of those folks with coconut oil sensitivity! Thanks again for this video. My long locs thank you too!!
Hi Whitney - do you think that the 'coconut oil' we're using today is not 'real coconut oil' because I grew up with coconut oil and what we use as coconut oil today 'behaves differently' from what I knew back then. What I know as coconut oil today makes my hair feel funny, like it has formed some sort of barrier, between my hair and water - something like how mineral oil behaves. A friend and I was talking about this and she was saying that when she goes back to where we're from, she's going to get real coconut oil, because what they sell over here isn't it, and I had to agree with her because the coconut oil I know behaves differently and also smells differently. to be honest with you I wouldn't be surprised if people were taking mineral oil and marketing it and selling it towards naturals as coconut oil. -- People can be pretty devious and it has been done before for the sake of profits. Just a thought.
Hey Ranoka! I wouldn't be surprised honestly! But I bought my coconut oil in bulk from a really trustworthy, organic online vendor. So I do think it could be a possibility, most def, that some coconut oil is fake, but for me personally, I think it was the real deal and that my hair just can't handle it anymore 💗💗💗
I now use coconut oil from Tropical Traditions and it is different from other brands of coconut oil that I have bought in the health food/herbal stores. TT tells how they process theirs on their website. I won't use any other kind of coconut oil now.
what I use also!
i grew up with coconut oil too but what i grew up with was made differently. Milk boiled on the stove till it separated. These new varieties are cold pressed. i noticed some of them were nasty though. i cook with it so i can only buy certain brands.
Great Point, but these people producing will ne in alot of trouble if true because Comsumers also use it for Cooking, FDA don't play!
it could also be that the coconut oil available is different. It is now in such high demand, who knows what these manufacturers did to keep up with the spike in demand.
so true
Good point!
Excellent point because there are also not pure olive oils on the market also. So one must do the research to make sure the product is of good quality.
I was thinking the same thing.
I totally agree. Manufacturers will change their ingredients and then one will react to the changes, as they will place more synthetic additives to their base for profitability purposes. They do the same with food, makeup, hair products etc. Good Point
Ive had the same problem recently! Ive only used coconut oil for a deep conditioning treatment about 4 times and eveytime I did, my hair felt more dry and brittle after I washed it out than before and my hair was shedding like crazy! Everyone says use coconut oil but its definitely a no go for me.
I had exact same symptoms. My scalp would itch like a thousand ants were biting me. The moment I washed my hair I had relief. I was aaaaahing like crazy in the shower. I did not dye my hair, or change my diet or do anything. I don't think you did anything either. You're not alone. My hair hates it too. I recently went crazy inching after using a product with coconut oil. I'm really sad about it but I have to avoid it like the plague now.
serenesista me too
Oh, I think you're allergic to coconut oil.
Merry toooo! Glad you guys said something!
Me too
Allergies
OMG!! My hair hates coconut oil...it made my hair feel like straw and turned into a tangled mess. Once I stopped using it....such a HUGE difference! The same goes for olive oil too. Glad you found the culprit! 🙆😊
I had the same problem! I was so upset because everything had coconut oil in it!
Amen to that! Anytime someone would recommend it to me I would just be like 😒 mmmmyhkaay
My hair hates coconut oil as well. I think it may have protein in it and my hair HATES too much protein. My hair doesnt like olive oil either. I think Jojoba oil is probably one of the better oils
Yes, olive oil has something in it naturally that can cause one to itch. Soon as i stopped using olive oil on my scalp, it felt a thousand times better. It's been over a year since i've even looked at olive oil lol
I also find grapeseed oil to be a nice light oil.
Lord help! Is that one of them 100 wigs from the last video on the elephant!?!?! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
My hair hates all things coconut!!!!! But my belly doesn't 😋
i kept staring at the elephant!
coconut oil dries my hair.
I use pure organic coconut oil to help my hair recover after coloring it and it has helped me so much and my curls are a lot more bouncy and soft
That elephant is SLAYING girl!!!! But in all seriousness - I greatly appreciated this video because now I'm rethinking my life choices involving coconut oil......my hair hasn't acted as well as of late and I did reintroduce coconut oil back into my regimen......this calls for an experiment!!!! Cue Bill Nye theme song music 😂😂
lmfao, I just noticed it when I read this. I was looking through comments instead of looking at the video.
LOL - no shame girl....I was like am I crazy, or did no one else see this neon blue elephant with the beautiful locks? hahaha XDD
zip
Coconut Oil is a natural protein reconstructer. They discuss that in the Science of Black Hair. So, it could be you over-proteinated your hair. I am protein sensitive, so I cannot use coconut oil. Also, Aloe Vera has protein in it too. So, I can't use that either. So glad to hear your hair is back on track!
Hey! I have the same problem. May I ask what does work for your hair? It would help me out a lotx
Just check to see if your products have a lot of protein in them and minimize the usage.
Agree
Pl see her response to Kalilia385 above. This is interesting to note once again re: Protein/Coconut Oil. Thanks.
hmmm. are you serious about your channel? you are so inconsistant with it.
I noticed coconut oil made my acne worse too so I also stopped using it on my scalp. Great video Whitney.
Coconut oil makes my hair crispy. Castor oil and jojoba works for me💕

No one should be discussing the elephant in the room
OMG me too! My scalp would itch like crazy until I stopped using it! Thank you for sharing
Not enough people understand how hair/skin regimens aren’t one size fits all! My scalp was AWFUL for years and I thought it was normal since I didn’t know what it was like to have a healthy scalp, then one day I decided to try coconut oil as a general moisturizer because of all the hype and had dermatitis anywhere I used it and that’s how I realize I am allergic to coconut. Turns out chemicals derived from coconut are extremely common in shampoos, and I react badly to a few in particular. I currently know of only one brand of shampoo I can use and it’s super expensive so I’ve had to turn to making my own shampoos when I can’t find it on sale, but it’s worth it because my scalp isn’t painfully dry and itchy anymore. People always look at me in awe when I tell them I can’t use coconut oil because everyone I know swears by it for hair and skin. Btw if you’re having issues with coconut oil for hair, I’d recommend avocado oil instead. It’s super moisturizing and I swear by it for my bleach-damaged hair!
Coconut oil is so overrated, makes my hair dry and brittle AFFFFF
Yes, mine too!
mine too
Me too! Like, literally CRISPY, CRUNCHY, hair that snaps, crackles and breaks.
I'm a soap maker and as soapers coconut oil is very drying. If you put to much coconut oil in the soap it will dry up your skin something serious. We only use coconut oil for bubbles not moisture.
+shealyn richardson Interestiiiiinnnggg.....
If I had a dollar for every time she said coconut oil in this video, lol.
I was looking for this comment!
Right! 😂😂
27 times
If I took a shot for every time she said coconut oil, I'd be tore up 😂😂
"Number one, I may have overdone it with the coconut oil" -- meta lol
I've heard that molecules in coconut oil bind to the hair and act similarly to how protein treatments bind to hair so maybe by using so much of it thats why your hair couldn't absorb moisture? idk I'm not sure lol
you might be onto something
It’s actually because of porosity, coconut oil should only be used as pre-pop (unless you have low porosity) to prevent Hygral fatigue Aka moisture overload
My hair hates coconut oil, but love EVOO!!
callmeapple83 mine too
add me to the list2
I've used coconut oil for one week in the past, NEVER AGAIN. It makes my scalp so flaky and itchy! I'm just sticking with the oils that have never done me wrong (olive oil is my day #1)
but for my skin, it did pretty well!
SAME!! I love olibe oil too. And the same happened to me with coconut oil
Not all oils are safe for your scalp
I absolutely adore coconut oil! My hair lives it. My mom and sister's though say it makes their hair really brittle from all the protein it contains. They swear by Olive oil, which my hair hates. Its trial and error with natural hair ladies. What works for you is not universal to all natural
Coconut oil does not contain protein it penetrates the hair shaft like a protein.
Lucky you, Sylvia! My hair liked it for about 1 or 2 washes & double strand twists. After that, it was dry as wheat. I looked up online why certain people don't do well with coconut oil. The article stated one of the reasons was having a good amount of protein in the body. People who fall into this category really don't need coconut oil, as it acts like a protein, which the hair already has enough of, and creates dryness. Have your mom and sis try an essential oil mix. Loads of info online about the best ones for strong, healthy hair. :-P
Sylvia Jelks I literally made a comment saying the exact same thing
Sylvia Jelks Hot oil makes any oil work. Once a week I saturate my damp hair in oil (castor, coconut almond...) and put a plastic cap on. Microwave a small wet towel or 2 and place on top plastic capped hair. Let cool naturally, then rinse my hair with cold water and I little bit of conditioner to seal in moisture. Sometimes opening the hair shaft is needed.
Sylvia Jelks
I appreciate this, I always tell people to PAY ATTENTION TO THEIR HAIR...our hair tells us exactly what it loves and what it doesn't love 😊.
I stopped a while ago, because when I put coconut in, it would become dry, brittle, and clogged.
The Hamster Army! Yes , mine too. It never work on me
Isn't coconut oil antibacterial? Too much of a good thing can be bad for you, don't you think? Lol
#TRUTH! 💗💗💗 Lol, especially since I was eating it internally to fight off my candida when I had it soo...... 🤔🤔🤔💗💗💗
Out of the many fungi that exist on human skin, malassezia is one of the only to feed off oils/lipids and is the main culprit of scalp conditions. Many oils such as coconut and castor have antimicrobial properties but their effectiveness is obsolete when it comes to malassezia. So the excess oil probably isn't destroying the fungus as much as it's feeding it too much.
You probably used so much that you made yourself sensitive. A friend of mine developed an allergy to crustaceans after eating loads of "janga", a kind of river crayfish. The funny thing is, exactly what you describe is what shea butter does to my hair and what coconut oil does to my hair in temperate countries. I kept seeing the results for people and thinking I was doing something wrong. I even went back to making my own coconut oil like my grandma taught me at home, but I soon realised that my hair just hates most of the things other people's hair loves like Cantu products etc.
exactly
you're right
The wig on the elephant 😂
I am cracking up lawdddd
lol right... I kept looking at it lol
😂😂😂!!!
lol
I didn't even notice it😂
Whitney, thanks so much for keeping it real! Great vid.
Coconut oil made my hair grow so fast and so much.
That’s good I’m starting to use coconut oil also
Coconut oil dried my hair out soo badly, and I wanted to love it so much because of how hyped up it was. But I listened to my hair and tried other oils and olive oil is my hair's lover. Super rich and keeps my hair soft after each wash and deep conditioning! I use coconut oil to cook and that's about it. Lol!
Glad you finally pin pointed the culprit!
I love that you said you listened to your hair! So crucial - we all have individual needs/remedies❤️
+Ashley N. Linen yes I can't use coconut oil , it makes my scalp itchy and my hair brittle.
yessss my hair looooves olive oil tooooo. lol I just olive oil shampoo, conditioner, greese, gel, polisher. They make so many things and I try to get them all when I see them.
Me too coconut oil and protein products kills me.
I had the same symptoms with coconut oil so I switched to mango oil and avocado oil. Your hair is nice! The elephant is on Fleek!
My hair loves avacodo oil also !
Xo! Thanks you Naturally Speaking! Yes!! Had to remove it completely! Been loving almond and avocado! Haha!! Elephant Slaaaayed! 😂😂💗💗💗

Is that all your hair that fell out in your background on the elephant? 😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
PMSL
Lol....Oh boy. Lol......I like your question though.
The elephant wearing your wig is cracking me up 😂. Also you’re GLOWING! So gorgeous!
It seems you went from one extreme to another. Too much of anything isn't good. Your scalp needs to breathe and putting too much of any oils will have an effect. I don't think you have to make sure nothing has coconut oil in it tho. I really think the excess was the problem. Another reason why we lose a lot of hair or have dry hair is because most kinky hair folks don't wash their hair enough. Your hair and scalp need water or it will dry out just like an amphibian or something. Moisture is water not loads of oil. That's a pretty bad misconception within the black community. I started washing my hair 2 to 3 times a week and my hair feels better than ever. Moist, full of body, and strength!
agreed. I've never had any problems with coconut oil but I also don't use it often. and yes, we need to shampoo more to cleanse the scalp
+ywhite20 yes honey a simple minimal product regimen! and that's the big secret that black hair is Not that complicated and needs no miracle solutions. its crazy I see girls pull out loads of products that they use all week or all at once even. its all about getting back to the basics. loving your natural is about not needing a whole lot to tame it or change it. I use conditioner and occasionally when I wear my curls down I use cantu curling cream because it bests defines my curls. at the most I may put some olive oil or coconut oil at the ends after washing. but I never use all at once. water is really the most important thing and that's sadly what black women stay away from the most. just like plants our hair needs water to live and grow. I barely straighten my hair anymore just because I don't like going a week or two with thirsty hair. I can seriously feel the difference. not to mention I use to be the one to go a month without washing thinking that was healthy. then I look at white folks and how they take care of their hair and kids hair and realized that's their only secret to having so called longer hair than blacks is having a simple regimen, minimal products, regular washing, and loose hairstyles that don't tear the hair out. our hair grows it just breaks off faster because our miseducation on hair care. it was like an epiphany once I figured this out...
Dude she knows her hair better than you. She said even if she puts a single product with coconut oil on, her hair changes. It's not in excess then. Just let her try this out!
+claris17gemini what's a braiding hair practice? you braid your to keep it from tangling and knotting. there is nothing damaging about braids
Agreed. My hair too LOVES water, hates (particularly heavy) oils and loads of products. I am transitioning (again) and cannot wait until I am past that awkward length between twa and being able to get the hair in one ponytail, because too much washing is difficult with the two textures.
I realise how healthy our hair practices in the Caribbean tended to be. Little kids NEVER used to get extensions, only cornrows and not usually very small ones. Relaxer on children younger than 11 or so was rare. We were combed every morning, usually in 5-6 plaits and 1-3 when we got older. It really did not take much time, and once we were old enough, we did it ourselves. Our hair was washed once a week and at night, we would have to take down the day's hairstyle, detangle and oil our hair and then pin it into about 12 bantu knots to sleep in (that way it would be easy to comb in the morning).
take a shot every time Whitney says "coconut oil" 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Ooo! You tispyyyy 😆😆😆🍾🍾🍾
Drunk. Very very drunk.
im so glad i found this video. i have been having a lot of shedding lately and like you i use it for everything!. im definitely gonna make a change to my routine. thank you and i just love your little family you guys are beautiful people!
Coconut oil makes me itch I had to stop using it but for some people I hear it's amazing. Glad you got your hair healthy again!! Thanks for sharing your experience.
Me too. Coconut creme is a relaxer and when I put coconut oil on my scalp, it burns.
I didn't know that was a relaxer. Wow!! Hope your scalp is ok
Coconut cream is not a relaxer, you're probably just allergic. It's a fairly common allergy.
sensencubi555 Coconut cream IS a natural curl relaxer for hair. Coconut OIL is not a relaxer. However, if coconut cream is a relaxer, there may be some of those properties left in some batches of oil that cause irritation. We are talking about two different coconut products.
It did nothing for my hair, not matter how much I moisturize my hair with coconut oil my hair stayed brittle and dry. So I switched to rosewater and vitamin e oil. That changed my life, my hair never felt so soft ever!
At some point I stopped using Coconut Oil as well. It was cool to use when I was transitioning. but after 2 years it had little to no moisturizing effect, like you it was causing my hair to be super dry no matter what I did. My scalp used to be okay as far as moisture but over time coconut oil was not quenching any thirst, it wasn't locking in moisture from when I washed my hair, it would seal and eventually dry out my scalp, the sebum in my scalp would go into overdrive trying to makeup for what it felt it was lacking so that meant flakes EVERYWHERE.
Nowadays I use it -OCCASIONALLY-, and I don't use it on my actual scalp, just on my strands and ends, as a touch up to my curls in between co-washes next to my lotion and conditioners. Same with shea butter. Those products only seals your strands, and keep them from getting any actual moisture except for their grease.
I also had colored my hair at some point* that may have changed my hair's relationship with coconut oil, but that didn't change till mooonths after. My hair was also half the length it is now and didn't seem to have a pronounced curl pattern compared to now, so I can't really say whether the hair dyeing had some huge effect overall
Yes, I had to take Shea out my regimen, major Difference.
AmaniHiME Your scalp and shaft need to be opened and closed. Hot oil treatments, and Monistat on your scalp first. Once it dries, apply the coconut oil. Monistat is an antifungal. It opens the pores/scalp.
vaphillips76 thanks for your suggestions, but I know that coconut oil does not work for me at all. I do hot oil treatments and I have a particular regiment now that works for my hair. And I have alopecia so I'm not putting anything to my head that's not meant for hair lol
coconut oil has been life changing and amazing for my hair, but then again, I have no allergy to it
It sounds like you were either developed an allergic reaction to coconut oil, were not using it correctly, or you were overusing it. One thing I think people must remember, especially with oils when using it as a moisturizer, is to add water as well. Some find it better if they spray their hair with a bit of water, sort of work the water in the hair, wait a couple of moments, and then apply the oil. Also, the type of coconut oil is important as well. It is commonly said that extra virgin, cold pressed coconut oil is the best kind to use.
when i apply coconut oil on my wet hair it stops it from curling so no it all defers from person to another just like medicine there are people whith the same symptoms of the same sicknesse go the same doctor but get different medications prescripted
My hair never liked coconut oil but my skin loves it. Thanks for the info.
Funny that your skin can tolerate it lmao!!! I am allergic to coconut oil externally .... my entire body. I was once booked of sick for 3 weeks after I used it in my oil bath and I had the worst skin reaction ever, causing my body and head hair to fall out lol! I tell you, I had no body hair and head hair from coconut oil! I later found out from my mum that when I was young I spent 4 weeks in hospital due to something similar in a worse manner because they used some oils to try treat it and instead the reaction became so bad that I became unrecognisable. I had our traditional beer bath were we mix some essential oils too hence they couldn't figure out which oil caused the reaction. Fast forward 20 years later and I figured out the hard way that it was coconut oil. I HATE IT SO MUCH now, that I don't even consume any coconut products.
Michelle Ludwig, that is too bad that happened to you but at least you now know.
I use it for both...
NEW Video just went up!! #NaturalHair "Why I Stopped Using Coconut Oil!" I hope this info helps anyone who may need it!! 💗💗💗 ruclips.net/video/YV3mzHIAylA/видео.html
Hi Whitney! Will you ever do a video on Hair porosity?
I used to be a natural hair and ingredient Nazi but I have to say I have been using hair greese and my hair is flourishing. My hair is alot stronger, doesn't break and is retaining alot of moisture. People might need to reconsider hair greese.
I feel you LaToya!! I've been a bit more relaxed on the ingredients as well. I still read labels and there's a few ingredients that I still don't feel comfortable using, but for the most part, I've DEFINITELY become more 'lax when it comes to that! 💗💗💗
Hey Shelly! Yes!! 💗💗💗
***** Yaaaay!! \o/
Thank you so much for this video! I've been having similar reactions...hair falling out, brittle and feeling straw-like, itchy scalp. It wasnt like that before and my hair has always been very thick. I had a sneaking suspicion that might be it, but was unsure....THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! I dont feel crazy now! Going to stop the use, pronto!
XoXo!! So happy to be able to help!! 💗💗💗
Wow! My hair LOVES coconut oil but hates olive oil. Interesting how different people's hair responds to things differently. But I only pre-poo with it and sometimes seal with it. I used to put it in my DC, but I stopped years ago. Glad you found the culprit to your hair issues. I'd probably weep if I had to give it up, lol!
I'm glad I'm not the only one whose hair hate olive oil!
me too
Yes exactly my hair hates olive oil!
My hair HATES olive oil too
tikitavi167 my hair loves olive oil also and I love the ors hair lotion
My beloved coconut oil, glad it works for me!!
Most people don't realize even the "organic" coconut oil is NOT organic....I make my own coconut oil ..just coconut and water .... I will say..there is great difference from the store bought "organic" coconut oil....
+liz That sounds like coconut water, or milk, if you will. Is it quite watery? I think a carrier oil and a few drops of essential oil(s) added to your recipe might be great to try! Either way, good for you, TFS!
Thank you for this video!!! You've rescued my scalp!! My scalp was super itchy it was breaking out in nasty bumps and I couldn't figure out why. I saw this video and stopped using coconut oil. Haven't had a problem since!! I have to be super cart because if I accidentally get just a little coconut oil in my hair, my scalp breaks out!
Shea butter makes my skin feel crawly. Not allergic, but definitely sensitive. I think we disregard small issues too long and then it’s harder to figure out the root causes when they become a bigger problem.
It's because you was over using it. Too much of everything isn't good! Hair looks amazing full and healthy 😍❤️🙌🏽
Thanks Esther!! 💗💗💗
the wig on the elephant
yep took much
Girl, u said a mouthful. I never understood why, but my hair hates coconut oil. But I started using it again in hopes of helping me detangle my hair. It does not help me detangle my hair and when I used to seal with it, it made my hair hard and crunchy like I used hair spray. I was wearing a blowout and I would apply it to my hair to protect it. Well one year in Atlanta it was so cold, that crap froze up again in my hair. Everytime, I combed it, hair would fall. That's when I said hell no. But now I'm natural and have been desperate to make detangling easier so I tried it again. So u have reconfirmed my first thought. This lesson didn't come easy because I use coconut oil for everything. I use it to cook and use as a body oil. I love the smell of coconut. I even made a video about coconut oil, but it hates my hair.
exact same issue with me. i cant digest it, use it on my skin or hair. if anything i use has coconut oil or coco butter. you can forget it! but i use shea and mango butter. i only use the mango on my hair. makes my skin break out. but is amazing for twistouts! and shea is everything! Good luck sis
@JustAsh Stop using the Shea & you will notice a Difference as well. It's not good for Long-Term Comsistant use. Read your products carefully....Try It, No Shea Ingredients. You will See the Difference!
My hair hated coconut oil,it dried my hair out!!I also feel it's too heavy,it never really moistured just weighed my hair down!I use Argan oil & jojoba oil and that's pretty much it!!
lee williams Try the moisturizer in the EDEN brand. And don't forget that hot oil treatments are awesome on our hair. It opens the hair folic. Let cool naturally. Then rinse with cold water and conditioner to seal.
I literally just heard about you 10 minutes ago and you are a life saver! I've always been deathly allergic to coconut so I caught hell trying to find products for my hair and skin. I'm subscribing and will be watching all of your vids for tips. Thank you so much!
I am so happy I found this video. I was having the exact same issue and didn't know why my hair and scalp was affecting me. Now I know it's due to the oil (coconut oil) I was using in my hair. Again, thank you!
Its funny cause olive oil gives me the best results
And I naturally chose this over coconut oil
I love olive oil
me too
@ThinkFirstable what would you suggest then? And wouldn't testosterone boost hair production not decrease it?
I just want to know what I should use instead of olive oil since its not good for you? But still inexpensive
Too much protein in hair will snap ,split, and over dry it. And coconut oil has lots of protein.
yeah that might be why
Coconut oil has zero protein content but can act as one since it's able to penetrate the hair shaft.
+Elderberry Jamz I agree
Coconut oil doesn't have protein in it at all. All it really does is binds the hair's natural protein making it strong. In that, it's a lot more like henna than an actually protein.
coconut oil has zero protein.
Wow, this video was really helpful. Coconut oil did the same to my scalp. I had stopped using it recently, because of these same symptoms. My scalp has never been better, since I stopped using it. Thanks for sharing your story, *Naptural85.*
this is me. I loved coconut oil, but it only took me about 2 months to realize my hair was more dry, my scalp was sore and itchy and it made me have acne in the worst way
The oils on the shelves have presertives...I make my own oil
I'm wondering if your hair flourished with coconut oil before you dyed it, perhaps it was the chemical in the dye that had an adverse effect on the coconut oil to now act up. I'm finding it strange that the coconut oil flourished in your hair before and now after removing the dye, it's a problem. Very interesting but I'm glad that you found the culprit. Bye, bye coconut oil for you! :)
It sounds as if she's having an allergic reaction to coconut oil. Allergies can develop very quickly for no apparent reason.
Could be...I understand what you're saying. I still find it strange that it happens after she dyed her hair.
Coconut oil actually worked best on my hair when it was lightened because the strands became porous and needed more fillers to maintain its strength. But since growing the color out my "virgin" ain't too excited about coconut oil.
My bleached hair hated coconut oi!. The new growth that came in after it seemed just ok with it though. Will always use Argan Oil if i can :)
Her scalp reacted, so it can't be just the dyed hair that is sensitive to the coconut oil.
I think we should take it back to the old school things we used to use in our hair as children. Think about it. When we didn't have all these black hair care products back in the day our natural hair was thriving. Thriving with unnatural shampoos and conditioners and just water and hair grease. And that's all our parents used in their hair back in the day and look how thick, long and healthy their afros were. I didn't have or hear about all these scalp allergies and hairloss issues happening until we started using these black hair care products and substituting grease with other oils instead. Just sit back yall and really think about it.
+Chanikka Welch Yeah I think you may be right but in terms of hair grease I hear nothing but good things about it for our hair. And I think that's one product that hasn't changed. And when I went back to using it for a short while I noticed my hair stayed soft and moisturized for so much longer than when using these oils the natural hair community says you should use now. But I stopped using grease because of what they were saying but I think I'm going back to it permanently. And I use nothing but natural ingredients/natural hair products in my hair ( only shea moisture products and coconut oil) and now I have scalp issues. These natural ingredients/ natural hair products are starting to sound really overrated to me.
that might work for some people, but I got mediocre results from what my mom did, not terrible, but not great. my hair is now in the best shape it has ever been. I honestly I know a lot of naturals are against shampoos but a lot of these problems sound like the kinds of problems that happen if your scalp isn't clean enough and the oils which are beneficial to a clean and healthy scalp environment are torment on a scalp environment that has one or more of its microbes out of balance.
I use shea butter. BTW people are not ready to return to the past customer or company. They are all constantly trying to find the next miracle.
Alia Savage Yeah that could be possible because of this cowashing trend that I don't believe really cleans the scalp as well as shampoo. But I've always used shampoo and it didn't stop me from getting scalp issues. All this excessive itching and burning started to happen when I started using only black hair care products and oils. And I hear way too many of these naturals experiencing the same things now. Idk maybe we are allergic to them because our scalp was soo used to the old school things we used to use for years that now these new products are a shock to our system and scalp therefore causing all these problems idk. So I may take it back to the old school as an experiment just to see if my situation reverses. But that's great your hair is in the best shape ever now. Your so lucky lol. Keep up the good work.
NothingHeard Yeah that's probably true but I sure am ready to return lol. It just crazy that my scalp seemed like it was in better condition in my permed years than it is now that I'm natural. And in my permed years all I used was unnatural shampoos and conditioners and never used any oils cause I wanted the flowy hair lol but I wasn't experiencing all this itching and burning. So I'm connecting it with these new products and oils. But yeah I think we are constantly trying to find the next miracle to the point that it's affecting our coin.
maybe this is why i am shedding so much hair. Plus my curls are so dry! Naptural85 you are the best! Thank you so much!
Wow, coconut has worked wonders on my hair & my daughter's hair.
Sorry to hear!
that elephant is werking that hairdo!! lol
😂😂!!
Many popular natural oils can cause malassezia fungus overgrowth resulting in dandruff and dermatitis, among other scalp conditions. I've learned that it's best to just leave the oils and heavy products for the ends of my hair.
Very interesting I have noticed that my scalp has gotten itchy with the increase of natural oil usage.
I'm not allergic to coconut oil but I notice if I over use it for to long my scalp gets dry ....do you know any good oils for dry scalp?
+mimi102239 Rosemary & jojoba oil
I stopped using oils and bitterness well. Shea butter and olive oil gave me dermatitis. itchy flaky etc. The oils are too much and slides around. I think it's because our scalps already produce a fair amount of oils (sebum).
I think that this is what's happening with myself. I've been struggling with inflamed, itchy, flaky scalp in spite of my hair being cut short, and conditioned with, DUN-DUN-DUN! Coconut oil! Right now I have coconut oil in my hair, because I'm trying to test this theory. When I stopped using it, I was fine. I decided to try it one more time to see if the symptom come back. Then I can say for sure that I need to cut out the coconut oil.
A classmate grew her hair crazy long with coconut oil!
that elephant with the soul glo fro in the back had me laughing so so hard ahahha😂😂😂💖
i cant take it.....the little elephant with her head full of hair is like "see i was trying to tell ya!"
Im not allergic to coconut oil, but it has never done anything for my skin or hair. It just sits there. . . doing nothing. LOL, I tried to use it on my daughters skin for eczema and it did nothing. I just think we ( me and her) require thicker moisturizers like shea butter.
There's a product on Amazon called Puriya cream which is good for eczema, rashes, dermatitis, etc. Has really good reviews. Try checking that out.
Ha it did the same for me. I tried it on my face and it sat there and made me look like I dipped my face in a bowl of cooking oil. Plus I was at work in the ladies room trying wash off my face with those hard azz paper towels. Ugh 😖😖
coolazzchick1 Aww. My hair doesn't like coconut oil either. It made my hair feel so greasy and stiff.
Same. my hair doesn't like it at all. It just sits there for me also, same with my skin. but Shae butter is my BFF especially on my skin.
coolazzchick1 lol
i think this is a prime example of "too much of a good thing is bad" its a good lesson for us naturals to learn. I know heavy handed one when it comes to my hair
Its a matter of trial and error and it great that you found out what works for you NOW. Sometimes I hair changes and so should our routines. I have recently realized that a lot of times, we start having issues with natural products including oil, when we are not cleansing the hair like we should. We use oils and other products on out hair and then use a sulfate-free shampoo or co wash and the scalp and hair is not getting as clean as it could. It is important to clarify. I have started clarifying my hair more with the Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Threat and my hair has been thriving. Sometimes you need something with more cleaning power than the sulfate-free moisturizing shampoos a lot of us use.
My Grammy who past away actually used this all of her life, what she actually do back before was, after washing her hair , she applies coconuts oil, she let it stand for 10 mins, then she 'll shampoo her hair , skipping the conditioner.., rinse it off..! She really had a very long black shiny hair for her age 85.--also .., She loves coconut wine too..
