Thank You
Thank you for not having a robot voice narration
It can go 120 knots.
The Chinook is named after the Chinook Indians who lived along the Columbia River, and who were the first people to tell stories of "The Great South Wind", or, in their language, the "Snow Eater"
But it was, the speaker repeats a sentence from 6:27 - 6:31 and tells it again after this with the exact same pitch and pace. Real master peace of AI sound i say.
So this is still a computer narration
@@pourlife4267 at least it sounds pretty real, which is less annoying than the cheap text to speech stuff
The new Chinook is soooo stealthy, a lance has been fitted on the front to poke insurgents in the eye!!!
The shots of it refueling with those blades spinning so close gives me the d@mn willies, but they seem to make it work. Those things have saved so many people's butts over the years. I hope they can put the version with hotted up GE T408 motors into production - a Chinook for the 21st century.
@@wafflesnfalafel1 Watch an MV-22 Osprey refuel. With both rotors tilted forward all I can think while its refueling is "gee, what could possibly go wrong here?"
@@wafflesnfalafel1 I remember a clip of one of those refuelings going wrong and the blades ending up chopping the tip of the rod 😂😂😂 It was a super stallion though but it’s crazy that it’s even possible.
It's not a new feature, many of the old ones had that too.
@@wafflesnfalafel1 Imagine how we felt the first time trying to hook up. There were a few close calls, but eventually we figured it out. Of note, the C-130 and crew sent to do the testing were from Hawaii and had to do the testing over South Jersey in the dead of winter. They were NOT loving the cold.
50-year old and still getting built. Best helo ever!!!
False. That would have been the Hue, but you don't see them still building that anymore do you? This thing needs to go to the scrap yard.
A lot of the 60's, 70's, 80's are still flying. There really isn't a whole innovation in helicopter design.
@@EliteF22 Which should encourage the development of newer, more modern and sophisticated vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft. Its slow and inefficient, which is one reason why the Marine Corp switched to the MV-22 Osprey multi-purpose transport aircraft instead. It too has its share of issues, but at least if will get better with future development and upgrades. You can give it new engines and avionics, but there's only so much you can do with a machine designed way back in the 1950s. This thing is already over a half century old when it comes off the assembly line.
Krane again, your ignorance.
Care to look up the maintenance requirements on a v-22 vs a 47? As in how many maintenance hours are required per hour of flight. Yes it’s faster, but speed isn’t everything. You have to see the whole picture. The fact that you think just because it’s an older design it must be obsolete shows that arguing with you is pointless.
@@CB-ck6ze So how old is your car, your home appliances, your electronics? 1960? 1950? 1940? Maybe the computer you're on is from the 1990s. Your internet speed is measured in kps? After all, we were satisfied with all these things once. Apparently, you're the one that didn't think this through. I'll let you have the last word.
Chinook is a great piece of kit. We had them for years in Canada, then they were dropped from our inventory. Newer models came back into service for SW Asia ops. Incredible feeling flying knap-of-earth (contour) flight in them
Flights of three of those beasts (CH47) fly over our area every now and then, you start to hear them about 10 minutes before you see them. Love the Chinook.
Lucky you
These excellent machines and excellent troops fly over my house frequently for navigation training. Thank you to the 160th for your dedication and bravery 👍
The MH-47G Block II is a beautiful helicopter, I want it to remain operational for many decades to come, and never need to be replaced unnecessarily.
I had a few Chinook jumps back in the 80's at Ft. Bragg. Stepping off the rear ramp was a different feeling than exiting out the side doors of a C-130.
I wish I was equipped with two m134's for self-defense.
In a combat zone I’m sure it would be
deejayimm I’m equipped with a glock 17.
Looks good,
It doesn't need them, the pilot can use the refueling probe as a lance
No. You just need a good PKM since it's links don't disintegrate, it's lighter than the M240(17lbs) and it's got wood furniture. You'll look cool with it, too.
I worked on the drive train on the previous models and these helicopters are simply BADASS !
I was talking to one of the crew chiefs for one of these before we took off. I asked him what all can one of these lift?
He smiled and said, well we could pick up almost anything, the rotor blades are the only limiting factor. We could pick up a tank if the blades could take it. I could tell he liked his 47.
My dad was army aviation special operations in Panama ❤️ love the Chinook 🙏
My dad was air commando in Panama
The Chinook has come along way since my days as a crew member on an A model in Vietnam. MH47 is very impressive. What an awesome work horse they are.

@@jmc2567 Your kind words are much appreciated.
Sweet ride! After talking to one of the crews of the glass cockpit version, they no longer can land them in the water due to the new avionics, but it sounds like they rarely used that tactic except for a few rare spec ops mission. They reserve the remaining steam gauge models for that tactic now. This is definitely still one of my fav helos.
Love that Hind-snatching mission at 4:48! Along with the pure sound of the choppers from 7:08 on.
It’s not a “twin bladed” helicopter, that would be like the original UH-1. It is a dual rotor copter however.
rotor
Same thing, doesn’t matter
Twin-2
Dual-2
@@SierraDelta- No, in aviation twin and dual have very distinct meanings.
Technically we called it "tandem rotor" I crewed them in the Army 160th
@@SierraDelta- tandem rotor
They should make a Chinook Gunship, like a spectre that has cannons and 30 mm bush master guns for close air ground support.
They actually built chinook gunships during veitnam. You should look it up, its kinda interesting.
Thanks for keeping the music waaaay in the background. It still does the job of creating mood (of some kind). But the excellent narration isn’t overwhelmed. Great vid.
This is why the US Army is so strong they are self sustainable they are literally every other branch in one. The other branches have their own role and rely on the others for assistance yes the army as well. But literally the army is built in full spectrum operations on its own is mind blowing the enablers they have 🤯. They fought in two theaters in WWII at the same time 👏👏👏
Nice, I flew in the OH-6A in 1969 - 1971 in RVN. The little bird was the BEST. Flew as a Scout. Try border area.
Thank you for your service sir , and welcome home !
Hughes Aircraft made a GREAT little bird!!!
I flew with C Troop 7/17 Air Cav. Scout pilot September 68 to May 70. In support of 4th Division.
The OH-6's could get into tight spaces, fast!
I wanna fly the little bird, similar right?
The hangar shown early in the video is the same one from which the first MH47E was delivered to the 160th. A lot of people pulled a lot of all-nighters to get it done. Glad to see it''s still going strong.

Me too, test pilot.
160th was the best helo asset we ever got to use. When they said what time they'll be there, they'll be there, to the second. Wheels, skids on the ground. Even for training, all others were always late....
It got so bad that we brought a baseball kit from MWR and played baseball while we waited. We had some not even to bother to show up. When we got back to the command everybody was asking why you took so long to comeback, the bird cancelled? We were having too good of time. That was back in the 90's, no cell phones yet.
Ok you guys we have helos for this deal. Who's flying us? TF160. Oh yeah! One less thing to worry about.
The 161st are one better 😀
Thank you
I was excited when they came out with the C model. The fuel tanks were the first thing I noticed. This is like the USAF B-52 amazing designs last forever. A friend a mine flew hooks in the 160th. They are the best of the best squared.
The Chinook has always been one heck of a workhorse!
I wish I was able to be a pilot in the Army, but back then they had eye sight restrictions. If I could, I would have loved to fly this chopper. My favorite of all helo's!
They still have those restrictions. Hell they still exempt people with heart murmurs.
@@PugilistCactus When I turned 29, 5 years after I got out, they no longer required 20/20 uncorrected vision. I have 20/15 and 20/20 corrected, but they weren't allowing anyone with glasses or contacts. Now they do, and they allow people who have undergone Lasix eye surgery, which we didn't have back then. Did they go back to non-corrected vision requirements?
Ex 242nd ASH (PhuLoi),1967-68 A and B models. Wonderful to see the much improved Chinook program continue well into the future.
I remember seeing the old versions of that helicopter when I was still in school and during the integration of Central High School in Little Rock, AR and they passed by our grandparents home going there. I have seen some since being in the Air Force and they are weird looking on the inside and I remember also seeing some while in South Korea and we loaded cargo on them which went to the troops up at the DMZ.
Very good presentation !!
I've since become a huge huge fan of the Chinook, as mentioned it's a proven design that is not only reliable and does the job, it's very very cost effective which is something that has become a major consideration in the world of aviation procurement.
Boeing has been very smart about not incorporating too many new upgrades at once, because that is something that to me drives up cost, not too mention reliability and true performance.
There indeed is something to be said about the old way of doing things, and I for one am glad that Boeing has more or less stuck to the original design here.
One thing I would like to know is - gosh that refueling probe is awfully long - can I assume it is fixed as opposed to telescoping ??
I'd also be curious as to how much travel at the tip end there is in flight, and how much vibration it is subject to from the rotor downwash - which I assume diminishes in fwd flight...
Again, great video which describes another great new Chinook variant/upgrade - winner winner chicken dinner :) :) :)
This helicopter went past our house following the San Antonio River
The Energizer bunny of helicopters. It just keeps going and going.
Awesome machine and now upgraded with more power and two mini guns.
I rode in the early model many times in Nam. Wow, it's like a flying bus.
6:24 listen. Am I the only one who hears a repeat in the narration?
I think he made an edit and forgot to cut/delete. I've done that...
Yes you are
There’s a couple of repeats
Stop looking for errors don't be so petty
3:19 And here the MH-47G can be seen dropping hot brass down the shirts of opponents on the ground.
I was in so long ago, during the cutbacks, we had little bicycle pedals in the cargo bay floor and we had to pedal like PHu@k to keep the rotors up to speed so that we had enough fuel to get there and back.
Thank you for your service MH-47g Chinook
5:05 That's some pretty serious pitch on that one rotor...
Yup....looks like the pitch link is missing or broken off
Pitch link is prolly disconnected
Ooooooooh goddamn that's a sexy looking heli
I love these helicopters. Have for a long time so happy about hearing that they are making a new one.. they are badass to see flying in real life..
The good Ole Chinook.
Still lifting its weight in gold.
They would be next to us every deployment. Would dump rounds all over the taxi way lmao
This is so beautiful do you know if it can operate on helicopter carriers such as the Izumo and Wasp class.
A great upgrade for the Chinook, but I noticed the narrator said "maximum load of 22,000 lbs"...
The CH-54B TARHE, also known as the Skycraine, would lift 25,000 lbs back in Vietnam and is still the only American helicopter capable of lifting a D9 Catapillar bulldozer!
During total assault, hearing Chinook and Apache is a fucking awesome relief you'll ever experience. Not forgetting Warthog A10.
The USMC CH-53K costs $150M, this costs $25M. Staggering difference.
Yup, mainly because other than new air-frame everything else new is a simple part replacement, dramatically reduce development costs.
I sincerely hope Boeing took more care converting these than it did designing and building the 737 max and the 787
viatronmac no ahit. I was pissed that no one was charged or indicted
787 was due to Carbon Fiber and electrical not working well together and starting fires. They built Fariday(spelling?) Cages and it no longer catches fire.
You are comparing private and military industrial programs.
@@derekc4919 , agreed however they are both run as “for profit” enterprises and let’s face it, it’s not like incompetence and graft are unknown in the military supply chain.

2:51 I’m pretty sure that’s not an m60. Looks a lot like an m240 with a spade trigger.
Mark Holub he said it’s an m60d d is for door gun I’ve seen the variations and they look similar
The M240D is an upgrade of the M240E1, primarily in the addition of an optical rail on the receiver cover. It has two possible configurations: aircraft and egress (ground). In the aircraft configuration, the M240D has a front and rear sight and a trigger group which accommodates the spade grip device. The weapon is not an M60 machine gun as the US Army does not issue that weapon anymore.
Warlock 06 SOF still used M60 here and there but not extensively
@@TAGsRC The last varient I heard of being use was M60E3 by the Marine Corp. What unit has been using a full size M60 recently for a brand new helo? Getting parts in a war zone would be nearly impossible also since the Army have not used it in a few decades, what unit used it?
@@paladin11C40 Nobody uses the m60 anymore. It's an m240d
Chinook is ❤️
CH-47 D/F Models center hook is able to carry 26000 lbs, fore and aft hooks(dual hooks) can carry up to 25000, so its a slight inaccuracy when they say the carry capacity is 22000 lbs.
Saw 3 of these fly over me at the beach, best part is all of them had the ramps down and 3 fully equipped troops were sitting on the edge dangling there feet above the beach.
That long refuelling probe looks like a hindrance in certain circumstances. Could it be redesigned to fold underneath the fuselage until needed?
The helicopter is too big to worry about tight spaces in the first place...
It’s like a curb finder. Let’s you know where your blade are, reference deal.
As a aircraft maintainer, thats a bad idea especially seeing as if you run into issues with it unfolding while being beat with rotor wash. You'd end up having the inability to refuel over hostile or distant locations.
More clandestine is a slang term. We have "Virginia boys" which are army selected maintainers and pilots who work with the CIA, and technically the unit does not exist. Is so secretive most of anhthing about it on the internet will likely get scrubbed. I know they exist from goin to a recruitment meeting.
"Twin bladed helicopter" How quaint. It's a tandem rotor helicopter. There are three blades on each rotor. You rube!
Man I'm glad that's an American chopper and on our side. Awesome aircraft.

One CH-47 is a legend in the UK, Bravo November was one of the first bought for the RAF and became known for always bringing troops back in the harshest of conditions and has only just been retired
Another chinook legend is Bravo November
This Chinook looks like the same helicopter that was used by the 160th SOAR where they retrieved the MI-24 (Hind/Alligator) out of Libya
*Edit:* they call themselves the _"Night Stalkers"_ and their Chinook kinda matches the description of this new Chinook
Newer chinook just has an updated flight deck, new composite blades rather than titanium honeycomb, and newer engines with more power for lift. More lift in helo's in some cases also means more speed. Helicopters are heavily limited in terms of speed with its ability to generate lift. Meaning litterally if a helo's airspeed is too fast it can lose lift and fall out of the sky.
It is the same basic design, with upgrades to increase payload and range, while reducing maintenance, increasing reliability and updated electronics with aerial refueling.
The MI-24 came out of Chad.
@@davidshanley558 At cruising speed, most of your lift is being generated on the side of the rotor disk where the blades are moving forward. That's because the rotational speed of the rotors adds to the speed of the air going over the blades. On the retreating side, it's reversed, meaning if you're flying at 120 kts, there's up to a 240kt differential in airspeed over the blades.
2:50 thats a M240, we gave up the M60 a long time ago
Oh shit your right about that gun being the M240. But you are wrong about the M60 it is still in service by the military and used on some Blackhawks and CH-47's

The Chinook seems like an ideal helicopter platform for a flying gunship, like a smaller version of an AC-130 gunship, but I wonder if it's stable enough(?). It could have more Gatling guns, or possibly a 30 or 40mm chain gun. A tube mounted sideways could hold a battery of side-firing 2.5" rockets.
Look up Guns-A-Go-Go. They did this Vietnam. A legitimate Chinook gunship.

Hope they’re quieter than the earlier versions. You can hear them coming 5 miles away. NO element of surprise! The V-22 Osprey is much quieter.
If you look at the Special Operations Blackhawks the the Bin Laden kill team used you'll see that the rotor blades are silenced.
Yep they are loud especially when they are flying super low right over your head
Stephen Jacks yea and they made those two for that one mission. SOAR DOESN’T RUN THOSE ANYMORE
Look for a video of soar in Syria. There’s two chinooks with silencers on and they’re quieter than blackhawks
Well yeah but the V-22 has less lift capacity too. That's the problem with tiltrotors they have higher disk loading because the proprotors have to compromise between disk loading in hover and prop drag in forward flight. Proponants like to paint a picture of tiltrotors being the future of vertical lift that will replace everything but they cannot due to basic aerodynamics. They will never be able to replace traditional helicopters in heavy lift applications due to some basic physics that you cannot engineer around. Any advances in powerplants and rotor design you apply to a tildrotor to make it better could also be applied to a traditional helicopter as well.
