@@DarrenEdwardsAviation they fly over the area that I live in for practice. The one I'm referring to was desert camo and low and loud . We get a lot of 130s out here also, I have a tower 🗼 on the property and that must be some kind of landmark for them. When they are low you can't hear them until their right on you.

I live near Sikorsky and idk if they have a contract to work on them or what since Boeing makes them but every once in awhile one will come by and you KNOW it’s a chinook before you even step outside😂. Sometimes it’s the special operations one from the 160th which is pretty cool.

My Youngest nephew is crew chief, loadmaster, maintenance, qualified for them. Word is he turned down pilot training, he's having more fun doing the several job he's doing with Chinook. He's recently transferred back to that famous and recently renamed helicopter base in Alabama, think to be an instructor maybe. I forget Fort Rucker's new name other than it starts with 'Nov ...', and the guy it is now named for flew many, many, medivac flights in Southeast Asia, and was awarded some serious medals.

We lived near Odiham on a slight hill. The house was surrounded by many tall trees. One day a Chinook was terrain following and came right over the house, as they often do. But I don't think the pilot had allowed for both the terrain rising and the tall trees ( presumably their onboard mapping does not show trees). The engines were wound up and he climbed as hard as he could to only just miss the trees. I could look into the open ramp as he continued climbing past the trees. I was used to them but this was the lowest and loudest I had experienced.
Maybe he really knew what he was doing and had it all planned but looked like a mistake to me as no other occasion were they that low.

I used to fly in them a lot in Panama in the 90s. Everywhere we went down there was flying nap of the earth. They flew very close to the trees. Flying along the canal, we would fly below the decks of passing cruise ships, looking up at the waving passengers lol.
Hueys were more fun because we could see out better, but the Chinook were faster, both flying at tree top level.

Pretty cool watching the Chinook and the Herc. It reminded me of when I was flying in my early days [In the US] I would fly my C-172 in the valleys nearby. One day, as I came around a tight corner, I began to start my climb out of the valley. Trimmed up and scanning the area I see something funny to my right. Looks like a smoke trail [not a contrail] to my 2 o'clock position. I didn't see any aircraft so I kept climbing. Still, the smoke trail is getting thicker and closer but still no aircraft sighted. I then lean WAAAAAY forward and suddenly I see a C-130 in my forward window! I realized we are on a collision course and I shoved the yoke forward to start an immediate descent. After the descent, I figured out what had happened. The reason I didn't seem him was that he was "behind" the a/c right window/door frame. Due to our both maintaining a stable flight, our approach to each other never changed so he remained hidden behind the window frame until I leaned forward. Thank God for the C-130 smoke trail. A few weeks later while downhill skiing the same valley, a C-130 flew through the valley at the same altitude I did before. Haha, I never did that again. Cell phone towers were the killer to valley flying.

The scariest ride I ever took was on a Chinook. The whole flight the Crew Cheif was running around with a roll of electrical tape, taping up leaking hydraulic lines. Quote from the Crew Chief “ you only have to worry if they stop leaking “ when we finally landed and he lowered the ramp we all skated down the ramp on a film of hydraulic fluid. True story AIT Fort McClellan Alabama circa 1983.

When the video ends it’s hard to have time to see what’s there (your other video links) and to click and move up to them before the next video auto starts. And it’s never the same user. In August of 2020 I had a few Chinooks fly over my house helping with wildfire evacuation…
There were a bunch of people at a lake that was completely surrounded by a growing wildlife and a couple of Chinooks and Blackhawks landed and evacuated them at night, in very smoky conditions, with lots of fire on all sides…

  • @JonnyBarmCake

Totally fantastic! The sound of the Chinook is like no other I have ever heard. Two banked over my car a few years back very low. I will never forget that for the rest of my life. I must admit, I did have a bit of a chuckle at hearing you giving it the legs off the static camera. Had a picture in my head of you going from 0 to 60 in a panic. Top video subbed and liked. I also did a stint under contract on the Prime Minister's 707 ( same airport , Charles Kingsford Smith , Sydney ). I also did two stints on Chinooks as a civvie with the RN at RNAY Fleetlands, Gosport. The Chinook is my favourite all time aircraft, and the sound is one that you know straight away. When you've flown in one of these , it's well, an experience to say the least. Good times. AussieMart.
