- Full title: Commander Keen in "Invasion of the Vorticons" - Episode one: Marooned on Mars
This is version 1.31, released 23 January 1991
----------------------------
Welcome to the world of Commander Keen!
This is the first episode (of total 7, +1 unofficial, +3 fanmods) of the series. Where Billy Blaze goes on a sightseeing tour of Mars only to find his space ship ransacked by the Vorticons. Keen must find the 4 parts scattered throughout the game (Controller, Vacuum, Battery, and Everclear) and make it back home on time before his parents come back. (In reality, the game doesn't have a time limit).
Note on the video, the reason Keen hogs the top wall before entering a level is due to the complicated command for DOSBox's video recording [Ctrl + Alt + F5], which can cause Keen to move slightly, so hogging the top wall was to avoid any "frame skip" as a result. The part where I saved my game after every level was cut.

playing this game in the 90s as a child with my father in an eastern-european country and nor of us could understand or tell a single english word... oh, the memories...
Comrade Keen.
@@kurz_jacob KKomrade Kommander Keen

One of the very first games I ever played, god what a wave of nostalgia... I'm 33 now and watching this takes me right back :')
same here, 38 here
Me too😂
Same 34, showing it to my 8 year old.
Same here, 33 y.o too. Is there anyway to download this game on pc or android?
I am 35 now and i think i played it in the year 1995or96 😄
n.o.s.t.a.l.g.i.a. this was the first computer game i ever played
+Zadrian Ordill Same here! I had this random inclination to check out a video of it after all these years. Glad to see it on RUclips!
Me too mate along with Captain Comic
Me too . Those sounds...
Same!
yep same
Omg I hated that blue wolf as a kid. Terrifying!
My dad worked for a computer company, brought this home one day said his friend made it. 30 years later I finally figure out hes a god damn liar!! Nice play pops
Maybe his friend is John Carmack?
dude you gotta ask him
Your dad didn’t happen to work for Softdisk, did he?
dude, did you ever confirm if it was really him?
So you hate him now?
Cant believe that this game was made by the same guys that made doom
my childhood in 42 minutes. great job bro...
Crazy to think that Billy or Commander Keen would be a 40-year-old guy this year. 😮 This game is so nostalgic. I grew up in the 90s, too. Thanks for the playthrough! ❤
HOLY SHIT. I REMEMBER BEING OBSESSED WITH THIS GAME BUT I WAS SO BAD AT IT.
One of the best classics out there!
Being PewDiePie before he was cool(?)
Agreed haha I was watching this first few levels like yep I remember this... then it was like ok I never got this far :( haha
We were all bad at it lok
This is the greatest game ever! Love all of them! Remind me of being a kid in the 90's! I think that game was installed on all computers in every schools in Denmark☺️
I was afraid to go into the levels with the kangaroos.
dandeentremont gosh i hated those
This game made me afraid of kangaroos. Nightmare fuel for seven-year-old me.
Even as an adult who's never played this game I agree... those things look terrifying!
4:25 I think I speak on behalf of everyone when I say the level of adrenaline we shared after finding out u can pop on to those invisible dots was indescribable
Commander Keen is a legend.
That kid is canonically related to Doom Guy...
jekblom123 well he's also related to B.J. Blazkowicz
@@tommyrutherford400 He's his grandson.
Raggy123 I thought Doomguy was Keen’s descendant
@@tommyrutherford400 i mean his name is clearly taken after billy blazkowicz
Used to think his helmet was his hair 😅
Carly Mara He must be sporting the most fabulous afro in all the galaxy.
carmack made this when he was 20, pretty impressive if you ask me
I remember being a completionist on this: I had figured out how to clear out every single piece of treasure (ie. candy, pizza, etc...), no matter how hard it was to reach.
It always bugged me that this game had no music, though.
It didn’t bug me, it made it extra uncanny when it was getting dark in the evenings
@8:31 Who could get the last lollipop in the upper corner?
Holy nostalgia! I was looking up crystal caves the other day and this popped into my recommended videos just now
I had this game. Omgosh what fun. I was obsessed with it.
Everyday in after school care. I wanna go back! ;')
E3 2019 brought me here
hahaha same here xD
Greetings to everyone who arrive here
The mobile game sucks though :(. Nothing like this at all 😭
Yeah, now I understand what beatemup talking about
Can’t say I didn’t come because of that
As a kid, I was absolutely *petrified* by the final Vorticon boss. 😂 Thanks for the memories!!
This reminds me of how bad at video games I was as a kid..
We feel ya.
Even though I grew up as a Nintendo fan, this looks like I definitely would have played back in the day.
and the similarity is not a mere coincidence in this game to SMB 3!
This game is so amazing, I think everyone who had a DOS PC back then at least played the Shareware version once!
omg the nostalgia, my childhood weekends at my dads, C64, Super Nintendo, and MS-DOS games!! god I miss those days
These were such fun, pleasant games. The first three looked pretty primitive compared to what was out there on the console side of things in the early 90's, but it just goes to show you can never judge a book by its cover. Even I, who was a seasoned Mario and Sonic kid by the time I stumbled on Commander Keen 1 in the mid-90's, could appreciate the thought and design put into the game... at least once I got a hang of playing a 2D platformer with a keyboard lol. It's a pity this series is all but forgotten now. iD obviously had to prioritize Doom and Quake, and was later brought out by Bethesda who could only manage to tease a new mobile game before just quietly shelving it. Doesn't look like there's any room for Billy Blaze in these heady 20's. But we sure had our fun, back then, and maybe that's enough.
✋here after reading Masters of Doom!
Commander Keen, brought to you by Not-Pepsi-Cola!
Renigami thank God ads were not fucking the brains of humans that hard at the times.
ive been looking for this game forever!!! am so happy i finally found it
it bring back memories, my teacher let us play this games on our free time in elementary school, it was very old computer but we kids was pretty freaking smart to know how to play this games. thank you i finally know what it look like as a adult.
Billy Blaze? Hmmm does he have something to do with blazkowicz?
These sounds are very similar to the original Duke Nukem DOS game
Damn ! Nostaligic to see this. First game i ever played and loved it ! Finished it like 10 times or so
there used to be this secret debug area you could enter, and then transport to other parts of the plant, including this secret city with Teddybear Land (like 50 teddybears).
And.... 29:30 the most challenging part of the game!
did it impressively, too!
8:11 this guy used to scare me af, he chased me all around the level
Good to know I'm not alone. I remember being too scared to even look at him. Funny how a kid's mind works.
hahahahahha dude that's so true, i remember i couldn't pass this one for a long time haha
This was the first side scrolling game for PC. It was made by John Carmack and John Romero, the one's who late on made Doom. Great game!
Old video games were EPIC. Nowadays it is just crap. Their graphics are so real...that the games are NOT video games. We miss the era of 8-bit and 16-bit. The true era of video gaming.
That last level was the best. It was filled with special tricks. Like killing the Vorticon with that big grey bar, but the best thing was the basement. It was tricky to kill the first Garg. You dropped down and you had only 2 blocks distance to shoot it. But then you could shoot the next one through the wall. Each segment had a teddy bear. Four teddy bears is a life and there were more than 4 teddy bears. Every time you collected all the teddy bears, you killed yourself and replayed the level, each time increasing your amount of lives you had. Good times :). But that first Garg kill was really sweating.
Played this as a kid, wasn't sure if I got to finish the game. But seeing the ending scene made me realize I did! I didn't understand shit as I didn't speak english back then lol.
played this for fucking hours give me that chocolate bar
One of the first games i ever played wished they'd bring this back !
It's on Steam...
You got your wish.... and it sucks.
@@cringe3145 it does suck and its boring; but as a kid with limited games, i spent countless hours on this. Lol
This needs to become a TV or animated series! BTW, who will play Billy Blaze/Commander Keen?
I have to say, at this time, it would turn out horrible. You gotta see how Bethesda almost ruined the franchise with its mobile game.
ruclips.net/video/F0qPVV5qyw8/видео.html
Thankfully though, the game was cancelled by the fans who knew better.
Thumbs up, if you're from PCKF and you're reading this comment :P
Nearly caused and house fire playing this in 97.
Elaborate please :D
I need to hear this story too
Grandes recuerdos, uno de los primeros juegos que termine.
It's like mario kinda it's the same person who made Wolfenstein and doom
Wow. Nostalgia is real. I totally forgot about this game! Used to play this game on Windows 93 along with Wolfenstein! Back before I really knew what the crap a computer was. All I knew was how to play these two. Probably the only 20 year old that has played these during their childhood. I was about four, so about the year 98 or 99. Somewhere around then.
Quentin M I'm about to be 21 but my first ever computer was an Apple II. Spent those early years on the ports of dig dug and centipede. Sadly didn't get around to the original Wolfenstein until a few years ago.
Windows... 93?
you are not alone
there was a Windows 93?
Thanks for the upload you brought Back my child hood this and the first duke nukem ever were my first computer games
Wasnt it duke nukum?
Here because of Doom Eternal’s Cultist Base level 😌
05:20 - How do you pick that up?
Can you jump off the clams in the pogo?
Obviously the unreleased PC version of SMB 3 found its way, eventually !
oh that jingle when you gain a life, I completely forgot abou that.
Random story time: when I was a kid I had a school friend who had this game on his computer. My mom dropped me at his mom's place because my mom had stuff to do. His family lived on some property and he showed me this game on their computer, then was like "Hey we're all gonna go offroading" and all I said was "Have fun" lol. Ended up staying in the house alone and playing this game by myself for hours. When they finally got back they were like "you're still playing this?" After I left his house, it was literally the only time I ever hung out with this guy outside of school as kids, I could never remember the name of this game. It drove me crazy for years as a kid, I always wanted to play it again and beat it. Literally today I discovered the name of the game thanks to a Linus Tech Tips video. This loose end of my childhood will soon finally be resolved (once I beat it).
Genius game. And just think, in two, three, and six years respectifully these guys went on to make Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM, and Quake.
I loved this game back in the days
Still hard to believe that he is BJ Blazko's grandson.
Had I known the legacy that Keen was part of, I would have tried a lot harder instead of just running about.
Hard to believe his mom was a ruthless Nazi killer and his son is the Doom Guy. He seems way too innocent to be in a universe so harsh.
I remember that day my dad bought this game cd and we doesn't know how to install this game,so I called my cousin brother and uncle to install it,after one hour they installed it.i was in heaven that night.
3 years later: doom
Yoshi3000 but for a child three long years is massive
The very first game I ever completed, playing on my grandad's old 386.
Amazing game, considering before this there were no good sidescrollers for DOS at all. Still, I always turned off the audio though.
Oh my gosh, Keen uses Everclear from Father's liquour cabinet as Fuel! LOL
Is there no music in this game?
I remember playing this game but also recognizing it didn't control or was designed as well as Nintendo games.
These sound effects sound way too similar to Duke Nukum's to be a coincidence...
This felt really special when it came along on my 8086 ega pc 1640. I thought I remembered music. It may have been a sequel?
Luv and Peace.
This was two years before DOOM it looks like it’s a decade before but it’s only TWO
So many good memories of dos games. And Commodore in my case. Simpler times. 😊
Holy Hell! I totally forgot about this game! Have to go download it now.
Played this game so much I used to hop in my dreams. 🤣
THE MONSTERS (*ALIENS) IN THIS GAME ARE REALLY SCARY
Mom and Dad: "Turn that racket down", Me: "I don't know how!"
This was my game back in the day lol
The Green Bay Packer helmet was on point
holy fuck i used to play this game all the time!
1:17 ...the guy took his mom's car battery...not sure if she'll be more pissed that he's on mars or that she won't be going to work that day :V
I tried playing these but honestly it was the 4-6 series that I fell in love with as a kid. The controls on the earlier ones are so derpy by comparison.
The first computer game I ever played.
From this all the way to Doom Eternal, id Software has came quite a long way.
You trying to kill my speaker boo 13:23
I remember playing this game on my dad's old Commodore 64 in the early 90s. Good times.
Anybody else here because of the Honest Trailer of "Doom"?
sucha good game...memories!
Old good memories :'D
sadly i played mario first, this is 2nd tier platforming
Me and my dad used to play this :D
It’s in the same format as duke nukem for the time
I wish we can get a *perfect* reboot on this series, but with a brutal version, just like Star Wars, they have the child version and adult version.
NOW I REMEMBER THIS GAME. MY old youth center this back in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
probably the first platformer I actually beat or duke nukem. Both were fun back in the day!
I remember my first computer came with this game. What kind of foolish company just gives away Commander Keen for FREE? This is a treasure, thanks for posting!
Best game series eva
This game was revolutionary because it invented screen scrolling for pc
Just realized in 2019 the thing I mistakenly see as a hand pointing to the right (go figure) was actually his ship.
I was gaming on an Amiga so missed this one - started on PC gaming really with Doom and X-Wing games but having read Masters of Doom I have an appreciation for this title.
I remember being 6 and having this game at my school's day care center and being absolutely terrified of gaming. Present day 28 year old me laughs at my 6 years old self, playing SotV
Buscando te encontré ❤️ 2019 y con 26 años, este juego siempre en mi corazón u.u
This is some next level nostalgia
the slayer father really a cool kid
