I would consider Pyramid of the Forbidden one of the hardest levels, not just in Keen, but in all of platforming games...and you made it look like child's play. Bravo, Capn!
There's definitely a reason why he does the level as soon as possible! Lots of cycles and RNG in that one. Practicing hard levels over and over again can be fun...
oh thank you!!!!!!!!!!!! NOW I have understand how can I play in the pyramid with the hand!!!!!!!!!!!! I play Commander Keen since I was 9 (now I am 30!) and I never understand HOW can enter in that pyramid! using the yellow worms as a key! thank you, you're amazing. Greetings from Italy!
I played this game with my dad. We spent hours upon hours trying to find a way into that pyramid as a child. Over 20 years later I finally saw inside it. I can’t wait to tell him we would not have been ready for what’s inside. Congrats Capn. I hope to beat this time one day. In honour of my father.
My brother found his way into that pyramid by accident, and he was so excited to share it! I liked playing it later just for fun, and to prove I could do it. :)
its crazy how it works though - you really have to gather up all the inchworms on that one platform and jump up and down with a pogo? Like thats crazy who thinks of that lol
"why is he going so slow in this section? Does he need these worms to do something? They don't seem to be bouncy or- OH MY GOSH THEY TURNED INTO A FOOT!"
I remember how I gathered them all together first time just for fun expecting some sort of an easteregg (some sort of a funny dialogue with their "sentient hivemind" to be precise) 😅 By that time, however, I knew about a "secret pathway" in the Pyramid of Moons (from the Princess somewhere, I guess), but I was genuinely looking in the wrong area of it XD
My childhood finished in 17 minutes, great run 🙃 Ps: In retroperspective, this is actually a really weird game for kids. Rooms full of scary spiders, weird dudes hiding in stones only sneeking up on you from behind, mushrooms that are more terryfing than Batmans Joker, angry balls chasing you, snails shit*ing everywhere and a seemingly "nice" fish 16:32
Wow i loved this game as a little kid. I was terrified of the mushroom heads and the blue bouncy balls. not sure why. probably because i always died. i replayed the same 5 levels over because i couldnt figure the rest out. so cool to see this now. i forgot to mention i used a terrible squeaky joystick hahaha. no wonder i had no finesse
Hi, I've been speedrunning this game too lately and when I increase the cycles in dosbox the game loads faster, but Keen still runs at the same speed. Do you have any ideas? Great vids btw!
Keen should always move at the same speed cycle-wise, unless the game's running so slow that the engine is having trouble keeping up. Sometimes DOSBox can mess up games with you're using a static cycle count that's exceptionally high (like 200000 or more): 30000 is fine for the purposes of minimizing load times, but I never had trouble using "max 100%" either as far as dynamic cycle speeds go. In-game, Keen moves faster walking down slopes and slower walking up slopes, but that's about all you can do to change it.
@@CapnClever Thank you very much for your response! I'm not sure what the problem is, but I'm 99% sure Keen runs more slowly on my computer, because I can put on god mode and I'm unable to catch yours or XrackProject's splits. At first I thought I was just running bad lines, but it's the same route, and even if I run the levels more directly I'm still slower by a massive difference, like on the scale of minutes. What do you think?
So this does the secret pyramid? :D can I ask you if you're planning on submitting something at some point? Cause if you are I won't watch this just yet...
Oh, heh, I haven't really thought much about submissions! I suppose I'm pretty satisfied with a lot of these runs, so I will start doing that soon. This one... it's okay all in all. To be fair, most of the potential time save is lost to blind luck in Pyramid of the Forbidden, but it's kind of disappointing that I messed up BOTH time saves on the death exits exclusive to this run. I'll consider it for a possible submission, but it'll be a while: I'm more interested in getting the other any%s submitted first (2, 4, 6, and Dreams).
Death exits require some coincidences to work. First, taking a hit (or "dying") causes Keen to change in a few ways, but for this explanation he can't exit levels and ignores terrain collision. Second, saves don't track the can't-exit-levels part, which is why saving and immediately reloading is necessary. Finally, most levels have level-exiting tiles just outside the visual level boundary (could be a default in the level editor at the time) that function by touch, so crossing that boundary hits one of those tiles. Putting it all together: you take a hit, save/load, and wait for Keen to bounce through the level boundary, thereby touching a level exit. Sometimes reaching the boundary is impossible with a single bounce, so you chain saves/loads together, but the result is the same.
You're free to try the glitch yourself: it's 100% reproducible and quite easy to boot. Or, if you suspect this is a segmented run, I have a livestream recording of the whole thing over on Twitch (www.twitch.tv/videos/43401046 ). Having evidence of single-segment speedruns is more or less the reason I started streaming in the first place, but I prefer cleaner videos of each run here on RUclips.

This man. Never go to this level, let alone complete it in this fashion. Bravo indeed!
Let the Call of Duty fella's try this stuff :P
That was some serious gaming right there
I've done it on hard, just not with that confidence. And it doesn't look as hard as IWBTG sort of things (which I've never done).

When I was a lad, I always thought the yellow worms represented sentient macaroni and cheese. Lol.
They're INCH worms. So a group of them make a FOOT
I remember playing this as a kid and being terrified of that fish in the diving level
same here

Complete that feat for your father!
Did you tell him? What was his reaction?
the same history bro 20 years later one the bests games ever

I was so good at this game, well at least I thought i was before watching this.
This is impressive, GG!
I loved this game as a kid. It was one of the first games I played on PC back in the mid 90s. 😎
3:50 my jaw literally dropped... that was extremely lucky hahaha. Amazing run man, this was impressive 👏I learned a few things
Yeah those mosquitos are the worst. Totally unpredictable.

I played this game for hours on our family computer.
Dem trippy tree's
Clues of some illuminati message?
Damn, I "wasted" (didn't waste) so much time playing this game when I was like 10 or 11. I was good, but this is crazy.
i love this game,too.
How do you do that abnormal pogo jump ? , its seems higher & faster , never knew that when i played this game in the early 90s ....
Press both keys at once. I didnt get it as a kid either, even though the manual/help guide tells you how.
Impressive indeed. 🤔😨😲🖒👌👏
Something tells me it's not the first time you've played this game
That Fish with his Dopey Grin.... I HATE him So Much!!!
4:58 how on earth???

why not hard mode?? Seems like that is much better for speed run
I love this video. How did you get the load/save mechanism?

I'm sure it's been discussed, but what is that save glitch used to complete levels? How does that even work?

It’s only 100% if you get everything.
It’s always a pleasure watching you playing Commander Keen ❤ this game influenced me when I was a child 👧🏻 And we used the floppy disk 💾 😂
I thought 100% would mean getting all possible points and stuff. How is this 100%??
Does every level
But on 0:30 you didn’t pass the level you just loaded a previously played state where you finished it
