This is the 5th tile project we've done where we've removed the old tile before installing new tile, and the first one with this tool ruclips.net/user/postUgkxqqoaX03nrziKwF7Bjjcc71YzLEleMvOS . I want to cry for all the unnecessary work we've done in the past. With this tool, we removed tile surrounding a fireplace, as well as the hearth tile, set in loads of cement, in less than an hour. I highly recommend this tool. It was easy to use, and very satisfying watching the tile literally fall off the wall.

I never understood when people said makitas were smooth until I handled the rear handle 7 1/4" circ saw. There is almost zero vibration compared to my dewalt 6 1/2". Almost as if the blade wasn't spinning.
I have several makita grinders its as if there is not a disc on it.
Spot on. I have the big 40 V rear handle, the grinder and the big drill. They are all smooth, and nice to use.

Had the milwaukee, but sold it and replaced it with the Makita 40v - suuupersmooth and lots of power! Also it just works and is quiet compared to the Millwaukee which glitched and sounded terrible on some rpms...
Makita almost always is the smoothest, best, built well balanced and designed tool! It may be a half a second slower who cares. Unless it’s multiple seconds slower and your drilling hundreds of holes a day.
If you think Makita is smooth, try a Festool. They are both pretty awesome though.
@@ToolswithSoAlz - To me, Festool tools are way over priced and often under powered. The excessive price is mainly do to where they are made. Socialist Germany! That would be like Dewalt or Milwaukee making their power tools in San Francisco. You could imagine how expensive that would make them!

He loves Germany as well but would like to retire here some day. He loves the lower taxes and the freedom we have in the US. Unlike the high taxes and government control in his mother country!

Some good consistency when it comes to testing the tools. Looking forward to more videos.
I appreciate that right out of the gate you pointed out that dewalt did in fact make another slightly more powerful drill but justified why you we're testing the 998 instead of the 999. The transparency is nice and it will definitely be a more apples to apples comparison against the milwaukee but I definitely want to see the flexvolt advantage in comparison to both of these and maybe even the flex turbo.
If you check out Round 2, I do a leaderboard at the end with these and the Flex, Metabo HPT and Kobalt XTR from round 2 all ranked. I think the jury is still out between the 998 and 999, I know Workshop Addict essentially said it was too close to call, dependent on specific battery, etc. In this case I feel like my 998 underperformed. Not sure why. I will do my own DeWalt vs Dewalt video soon and update the rankings as needed!

From what I’ve seen, the Flexvolt Advantage is just a rebranded Power Detect for Home Depot, as Power Detect is BLowes exclusive and Flexvolt Advantage is Homeless Despot exclusive.

Jim, I gotta go along with others on here regarding your Intro! Wow, that was impressive! I like the ‘effects’ you used in editing it. Good test. I think your test/comparo summed it up fairly accurately. I still think the Power Detect, with the XR 8.0 Ah battery, is right up there with the rest. Yes, I have said the M18 Gen 3 is a heckuva drill, but I know I’d grab the DeWalt,, or the ‘kita, if it were me. May I make a couple suggestions? Instead of one fastener in and out, maybe do best out of three or even two? You redid the one drill where the chick was loose, or something, and the second speed was different/ faster. This can help to make a more level playing field, if you will. Just a thought? 😉 Secondly, While I’m not usually a fan of the background music creators use, you somehow seem to make it work? But, when the tool is being used, please turn it down. This would allow the viewer to get better idea how the tool is performing, by being able to hear how the motor is doing? Just a thought! Def impressive but would be curious to see which can last the longest durability wise. Even tho kinda hard to test. Can't go wrong with any of them def makes it hard for first time buyers.
That’s interesting the bit fell out of the chuck. Every Makita drill I’ve owned has had chuck issues.
I'm embarrassed to admit it, but apparently I never learned that you have to crank a ratcheting chuck back a partial turn to lock it in. So it's probably my fault...
They really need to add a drill mode speed control function to that knob on the Makita. I would use that every day for drilling steel with different size drill bits!
I've yet to charge my 8ah dewalt since I got it over a week ago. Got a steal deal too but liking these other also might have to try them out.

I absolutely love how you go about your videos and the tests you do! Maybe it was just me but I noticed many of the times didn’t match up between the clock you had running and the time you put. It didn’t seem consistent either. Some were pretty much the same time you put and others it looked like there was anywhere from 0.2-0.7 seconds added on. I know there are things you have to account for that we don’t or can’t see. Just wondering if that was done on purpose?
So the way I do the timing is, I zoom in on the video in Davinci Resolve and go frame-by-frame until I see the bit start to spin for starting the timer. I back it off by one frame (1/30th of a second) and start it there. It's worth noting that the live timer is measuring 30ths of a second, not hundreths, because it's tied to the framerate. (So if you see "5:27," for example, that's actually 5.9 seconds). When driving screws, when the bit stops turning, I stop the timer. My nut driver has a dark-colored size marking that I can see (although I keep forgetting to just mark it with a white paint marker to make it more visible). When removing screws, sometimes the screw spins in the hole, but you can tell when it's out because the screw starts vibrating rather than turning cleanly, so I stop the timer there. On drilling holes, I basically look for the bit to break through the bottom of the board to stop the timer. That's why I have pretty low camera angles on this one, it's easier to see when the bit breaks through. What you'll find is that the timer starts before you hear the drill, and it makes it look like it's starting early. But they're about as frame accurate as I can get them, +/- 1/30th of a second (and I don't go out to the hundreths because I just don't think my setup is such that it merits that precision...)
I also wonder what RUclips does when it re-encodes the video... could mess up keyframes, etc.

I just figured if anything, you would have a shorter time that what the clock you put up there for us would say but it was all over the board and I was watching the clock and trying to see when you finished with a hole or driving in a lag but all but one or two were off by a lot. I trust that you know what you’re doing because you’re just that awesome!

I honestly thought the voltage being double the others that it would have blown them away. I guess it’s a testament to what can be done with 18volts. I wonder how battery life would compare. If you had a 4ah battery on each drill, the watt hours on the 36 volt battery would be twice as much, but would it last twice as long? I continue to be amazed by these tools.
The makita xgt grinder is almost twice as fast as the 18 volt!
The voltage doesn’t really matter. IMO its a marketing scheme. The main thing is how many watts the battery can supply/how many watts the motor can use/how efficient the motor is.
@@jpi8237 Voltage matters to an extent. Running at a higher voltage allows manufacturers to run smaller components with the same performance, or the same size components with more performance. It also lets tools run cooler, as it's amps that really drives heat, which has some endurance benefits.
But at the end of the day, ultimately tool design is king. A properly designed 18V will be better than a clobbered together 24, 36/40, or 54/60V tool.
I have a 40v makita kit and its absolutely great.
Great video, I like that you only talk about what you are doing and not wasting time on something unnecessary. I'm surprised the results were the complete opposite from Man Caver Tools and Tools & Stuff. Usually the DeWalt Power Detect outperforms everyone. Surprised the Makita won, usually somewhere in the middle between these 3 brands, even though it won in Tools & Stuff video too. Hope your channel grows faster, will allow more tools and especially lumber to test on.
I did use a 1-1/2" Speedbor on PT lumber, I believe MCT uses a 1-1/4"... not sure if maybe that made a difference. But that did surprise me that the Power Detect didn't beat the Milwaukee by a decent margin. Concrete and metal tests are coming! Thanks for watching!!
I wonder if the newer power detects were nerfed, after they were shown to out perform even the FlexVolt advantage by quite a bit.
Look at man cave tools latest videos. Power detect STOMPS, the FlexVolt advantage. His is also a 2020 unit. I dunno man, the drill shown here looks weaker than my example of the power detect.
This here looks to be performing like a 996.

So, just so you know, only the 9ah and 12ah are 21700s. The 6ah all are 18650s, but the newer ones have cases to make it look like it’s bigger brothers, they’re still 18650s.
But if the FlexVolt even with with a 9ah beats handily beats your power detect, then your power detect is a bit on the dud side of the bell curve.
Maybe there is such a thing as brushless motor lottery, or even the processors inside the tools are subject to such variances. The thing is, as long as your 998 meets it’s 1072 uwo rating (whatever that means). Then it’s deemed sufficient even if it’s clearly weaker then some of the earlier examples tested by multiple other channels, and the model I got my hands on.

@@juanc5149 I'm going to repeat my tests with the Power Detect and a new round of fresh drill bits and see what happens. I know these drills are "smart" but I'd be surprised if chip variations would affect performance as much as they would overclocking a CPU like that article discusses. I'm just thinking, we're not talking sub-20nm transistor tech on these drills, you know? Phil, who appeared on my Flex pre-launch livestream back in April, is getting ready to launch his channel with a deep dive into sensorless brushless tech and maybe he can investigate!

Nope, I reserve bits for testing and don't use them for anything else, this was brand new except 1 or 2 test runs before filming. The DeWalt at least should've made it... need to try again sometime...
@@PhillyFixed maybe it’s the bit, I use the switch blade bits and I can do it with the Milwaukee 4 out 5 times on the first try my 18v makita not the newest but the one before can almost do it but not quite. I don’t dare try speed 1 on the makita broke the handle off and smacked me good it did.
Bought my 40V Makita kit, can't wait. Finally going to replace my 15-20 years old Makitas. This 40V line seems just excellent.

@@PhillyFixed That's what I'm fully expecting. Really the biggest reason I'm replacing them is because they use the older 18V batteries, and they don't make them anymore. They look just like the newer style but don't have the battery gauge on them.
@@Damitsall Yup I have a couple of the 3.0's with no gauge. Those and the tools they came with still work great.
@@PhillyFixed That's the exact batteries I have. I'll tell you I'm shocked, I have never seen Lithium batteries last that long ever. I use Lithium batteries for a lot of other things and most things I measure their life in months not years. I dont know what Makita puts in those batteries but it's freaking magic.

I got into dewalt this round due to their router being the nicest one in my opinion and also I love the Atomic series for everyday tasks. For projects XR series only.
I changed to dewalt from makita last year, way less durable but better value and range of tools not gimmick tools that aren't really needed like an 18v cooler 😆
@@bryarwalsh2605 milwaukee is the most overrated and gimmick of all the tools. I'm surprised a lot by Ryobi believe it or not their battery tech is awesome 40v stuff. Yes dewalt is #1 for power tools.
@@flyingashMilwaukee gimmick? What? And Ryobi is Milwaukees budget brand. And Makita and Milwaukee runs circles around dewalt on all but saws and 12v. Dewalt has great ergonomics, though.
Makita is great and all but I don't like the grips. They are just about tiny enough for my hand to get caught in the locking mechanism.
My preferance is Milwaukee m18 for power, and Dewalt for 12v and saws.

"Smooth" "comfortable" - this says just as much speed/power for how much I'll enjoy my tool.
Makita has always had the tightest gears or chuck way less wobble compared to the others.
When it comes to the combination of ergonomics, power, reliability, plethora of tools, and precision, Makita stands above the rest, in my opinion

You just showed how dewalt has trouble on speed 3 with max rpm (2000 if I remember correctly). I know each tool is different, but this is should be a fair comparison.

Makita makes excellent gear ,but I am on Dewalt system mainly because I like their Flexvolt circ saw and I get all my work done efficiently with Dewalt gear and their still the highest voltage and have room to expand plus the XR tools run on Flexvolt batteries. Makita 40v batteries not able to hook up to 18 volt range is a mistake imo .
You can run the 40v battery on 18v I've seen the adapter Makita makes for that reason
Flexvolt is still in a different league when it comes to power and flexibility. Hitachi/Hikoki/metabo Multivolt is the only thing that comes close.
Seems like the 40 volts gives Makita slight improvement but honestly was expecting more power from the new battery platform...

You can use a 8ah 21700 called Battery On the Flexvolt advantage dcd999 it dosen't require a flexvolt battery it's still a 20v tool @Philly Fixed

I like all tools when you use them and don't abuse them they are all good. I own dewalt, Milwaukee, makita, and Bosch and ryobi. I might add not all cordless

I just bought the M18 MILWAUKEE 2802 and comparing it with another that I have the Brushless 1/2 Makita 18v Dhp485sye, the MILWAUKEE 2802 is louder, the motor whistles, it heats up more,
the battery does not fit at all, the charger seems iron but as a positive point It has a better Chuck, it feels powerful, 5-year warranty, it looks well manufactured.
Between MILWAUKEE and Makita the power seems similar, at the moment I prefer the makita since the motor is quieter, the motor and charger hardly get hot, time will tell if the heating in the
MILWAUKEE is a problem or not.
It has cost me USD$185, winning the makita for USD$12 dollars less.
I hope my comments contribute something positive to your purchases.
Hi Jim, this is the 4th times I watched this video. 😂
I feel there is no benefit from the 40V (36V) of this Makita drill if compared to dcd998 or M18 with 18V (20V).
Why?
Because if we compare 12V vs 20V, we will see the big differences. 20V more and more powerful.
But this Makita 40V is not more powerful at all compared to 20V. Some test shows it lost.
Or let’s compare Dewalt 20v vs 60v tools. We will see the big difference.
My conclusion, Makita 40V is not impressed hammer drill in this test.
That's a fair assessment, Makita wasn't really targeting these types of tools with the 40V platform. Heavy duty construction equipment that has traditionally been corded or gas-powered is really where the 40V line shines. As well as the 3/4" impact wrench Torque Test Channel reviewed.

@@PhillyFixed If we go back to the basic formula, both of corded (AC) or cordless (DC) tools, the power output calculated by current (Amp or Ah) x voltage (V).
Higher current or higher voltage should give more power.
That’s why I told that this Makita 40V isn’t impressive tool compared to other 20V tools.

The Makita is good but I didn’t see anything there that would make anyone change platforms.
Maybe on the other tools the 40v comes into it’s own.
I don't doubt that the makita is smoother but the Milwaukee looks so much smaller than the other two and is more than able to keep up or win at some of the trials. But no matter how you put it, 40V is still much more than 20 or 18. But if i had to buy another drill set i may choose a makita because of its smoothness.
They're all excellent, they're very close competitors. I didn't get to keep the 40V long enough to do concrete and metal, unfortunately. But I'll do it with the XPH14.
The Milwaukee is smaller, but it overheats pretty fast. Nice drill tho.
The Dewalt is the longest and widest. The Makita is the tallest. The Milwaukee is the smallest in length, width and height.
@@akaredcrossbow Yup, the first test with the 5 holes is just more of an ergonomics test, it factors in maneuvering the drill from one hole to the next. I'll probably explain the tests a bit more in round 2, I wanted to get this one posted this weekend while the XGT line was still "news" haha.

Am wondering if I should wait for a new version of the 2804 to come out to buy him since these seem to be made a few years ago. What do you think?
@@stavroulaeconomou7256 The 2803 is a drill/driver, while the 2804 adds a hammer mode for drilling in concrete or masonry. I wouldn't worry about the models being a few years old, they are excellent drills. There may be a new one coming out at the end of this year but I don't see a reason to wait unless you think your husband will want the latest and greatest.
With Milwaukee, anything ending in -20 means bare tool (no battery or charger). I would wait a little bit, there are sales with full kits at Home Depot coming soon, starting 9/13.
Why do none of the timers on screen match up with the scoreboards that you post?
The timer is based on 30 frames per second. E.g., "3:27" = 3.9 seconds. "1:12" = 1.3 seconds. I'm going to do an explainer video on that since there seems to be a lot of confusion. Thanks for watching!

Yeah, Makita is typically not the fastest in a given tool category. But I find the ergonomics to be superior in most cases, and they tend to be very durable tools!
Makita may not always be the fastest, but it's normally close. I prefer Makita most times due to durability and ergonomics.
All my Milwaukee drill cut out and have no power. My DeWalts are going strong 💪
My Makita 18v stripped out and died but it was by fare the best drill to use!
I believe that I can hear the sound of the motor is important and you just put the loud music there, it’s not necessary, people look at your channel are not interested in music but the sound of the tools. Hopefully you will consider in the future.

those hammer drills are made especilized on drilling cements stones, better if you include how their torques can put a hole in a stone or cement..... bigger screws are best when we use impact drivers not so with a hammer drills. thanks in advance. kipitup! 👍

You should have used Dewalt 999 that is their flagship drill .
I haven't done my own video on it yet, but Man Caver and Workshop Addict both did some comparisons and the difference between the 998 and 999 seems pretty negligible.

just curious why you put it in drill mode for the lags? I never really use lags so idk much about them
Well, you wouldn't normally use a drill for lags, but the screw clutch settings on a drill are meant to limit the amount of torque so you don't overdrive a screw. In this case I wanted the max torque the drill could give me so I left it on drill mode.

Yeah don't really see the benefit of the 40v Makita just slightly faster, one would think the Makita would be a lot stronger since it's double the voltage buts it's not, all keep my Milwaukee.
Is quite a bit faster in many of the tests, and WAAAYYYY nicer to use

I love my dewalt xr range tools. I’m not. Big fan of moving to the 40+ volt battery platforms I’ve only just built up the 18volt platform. These tools are expensive and I don’t want to have to start ll over again yet.
DeWalt makes excellent drills. Their DCF887 impact needs to be updated but it will do the job. No need to move to 40V for anybody except heavy construction contractors, really.
@@PhillyFixed oh that’s a good point I thought they were trying to move everyone. I know there pushing flex volt gear more and more. I would be happy with any of the brands you have tested here. What’s your opinion on the new flex range of tools. I’ve heard some mixed reviews.
Overall, pretty solid. Think the recip saw in particular is excellent. But I don't think it pays to be an early adopter.. we'll see how these things do after some more time out in the wild; so far based on my own testing and what I've seen from others, the tools run very hot when you push them. Torque Test Channel borrowed my quick eject impact driver and it kept overheating and shutting down on them. Mine spewed grease from the collet when I was testing it on a stump with lags. But again -- we were pushing the tool to its limits, beyond normal use.

Why did you do lags in drill mode instead of hammer? Also even compared to the stopwatch you throw up on the video the final number you put up aren't the same.
I don't think you understand what hammer mode is on a drill. A hammer drill isn't an impact driver.

What’s the point of 40 volt if it doesn’t even have more power than 18 volt?
They're including these tools in the 40V line so contractors using heavy duty tools like demo hammers don't need to have both LXT and XGT batteries on the jobsite. The 40V line isn't really targeting lighter duty tools like these.

The Milwaukee had the 8.0 in this comparison and that’s the difference. Milwaukee focuses on power for the Hammer Drill not speed like their impact. I’d like to see test on raw power vs speed for hammer drills. With this drills the question should be can it do it or not as opposed to how fast although speed does help.
I know some will say the 6.0 HO battery is the best for Milwaukee and I’d agree for the speed factor but for power the 8 and 12 are where it’s at. Batteries are everything on these drills.
To really find out who’s best and what each tool’s max capability is you’d have to use the biggest batter offered for each. Just imagine when Flex releases a 8.0 21700 cell battery.

Milwaukee had the 8.0 ah battery as well in the other comparison. And it got obliterated.
On this test the DCD998 acted like a 996 and not the 998 beast we all know and love from the other channel.

Its not as good. The Makita handedly beat it in almost every category and is WAAAYYYY nicer to use...Oh, and it'll probably last way longer too.

I know this is not really a name brand but this is not first time I've ever heard of a DeWalt killer and the one that I see all the time is Hercules by harbor freight and the first Hercules were done with a steel thing and everything else I guess they wouldn't bad for the price if you didn't have a lot of money to buy 129 hammer drill from DeWalt or a Makita or the crime la crime,. Milwaukee you got your Hercules,
