  • Wales and Australia lined up in Pool C at the RWC this past Sunday in very different positions in their pool. Wales in position number one and almost certain to go through to the knockout stage of the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
On the other hand Australia had to win to keep their chances alive. Never before had Australia been ejected from the Rugby World Cup before the knock out stages.
Since Eddie Jones has taken over this Australian team they have been struggling, so it was going to be interesting to see what might unfold in this game.
What did happen, not many people expected.

Exactly! Same with the Fiji game, it was all about what Fiji didn't do, what the ref did etc, nevermind that Wales scored 4 good tries, made 253 tackles and kicked their goals

Wales was excellent there's absolutely no doubt but Australia, except for a strong first 20 minutes (Welsh try aside) just got worse and worse and effectively imploded. Never seen a SH team with so many errors and poor execution, Argentina included.

What you will get from a Wales team coached by Warren Gatland, is a team that is really fit and in perfect physical condition, Gatland loves a team that gives 100% in defense and he doesn't mind the opposition having the ball in their own half, he likes to pressurize teams into giving away penalties and gain territory, Gatlands game plan works well with Wales.

Agree. Wales are palmed off as lovable village idiots, I think largely because a lot of rugby union fans find it hard to resist the cliche that Welsh folk are born outsiders who should be grateful for a few crumbs. Essentially, this comes down to a lack of imagination which you will find a lot in rugby union circles.

@@garethadams9610We are the smallest Tier 1 nation, with fewer players than our T1 competitors, and also compared with many Tier 2 teams. Also, only half our small country plays rugby to a high standard: the South. Our four professional regions are all southern based. The North has no professional rugby side, although Rygbi Gogledd Cymru (RGC) is a Scarlets feeder system, or they were. So what we do is incredible, and really not recognised by much of the rugby world. Compare to our neighbours, England, with more players than all other T1 nations put together! Our achievements are astonishing.

@@garethadams9610This is rubbish, I'm English and Wales has always been highly respected in Rugby, apart from a dip in the late 80s/90s Wales has consistently been one of the strongest NH Rubgy nations and probably the only NH nation that could count Rugby as their No.1 sport (in South Wales at least). They have the joint highest number of titles of any nation for the 5/6 nations and have one of the best World Cup records for a NH team. Only in relatively recent years has Ireland become a force and France and England historically run hot and cold, particularly when considering their size and huge number of amateur players.

I noticed Wales improvement recently prior the RWC. Although, they were ‘lucky’ against Fiji. However, I didn’t see this coming. They were great. They are real contenders now. That’s how good they looked. Admittedly, against an imploding Aus team. However, Wales kept the Aussies out well - when Aus had some strong momentum (first quarter). Aus not taking the penalty to posts seemed to be pivotal. The Aus replacements made them look even worse. However, hats off to Wales. A perfect performance.

This is never, ever just about the coach. It's much more about Australian rugby's rotten administrators.
You see outside of a dwindling niche audience, rugby doesn't matter in Australia... and it's never done so less than now. But If you lock most kids out of playing the game and most people out of even watching the sport, where are future generations going to come from? Its the culture of nepotism and lack of courage and vision at the top that is killing the game.

Wales played their best game in probably the past five years and deserved every point they gained and probably should have beaten them by fifty.
What is the problem with Australia? We have absolutely no depth in coaching at Super Rugby level and even less alignment in approach to Rugby. The Brumbies are successful because notonly do they develop players, but they also develop coaches and from 1996 have run a system that works.

Interesting what you say about Super Rugby in Australia. It's similar in Wales, with our four regions always performing averagely in the United Rugby Championships (where they compete against Irish provinces, South African sides that left Super Rugby, and two Italian regions). Also, they never do fantastically in the European competitions. They struggle financially too. Wales internationally have covered the cracks that are clear in our regional game.

The other brilliant selection was Tom Hooper start at 7 for the furst time in a test match instead of 6 which exactly where Jac Morgan split the defense and broke the line for the first try.
No competent coach would make these selections or select 6 different captains in 7 weeks. Eddie lost the plot after the 2019 WC its blindly obvious

SuperRugby is the problem for the Tasman rivals. Australia has too many teams for their player pool and, as a result, are struggling to build cohesion. The lack of structured rugby by not having the South-African teams involved is hurting both New Zealand and Australia. They pretty much only play a run from everywhere game in SuperRugby. Territory and winning the collisions are still the most successful strategy in test match rugby. Ireland, France and South-Africa play exciting rugby, but it's still all built around forward dominance, territorial kicking, go-forward in the collisions, and an affective breakdown. The Wallabies need to rebuild from the top down. Reduce their number of domestic teams, get their young players more test match experience, and play to their DNA.
