What happens when the “key” they gave you won’t engage the pulley system? I was replacing shock absorbers and decided to get the spare tire out of the way so I dropped it. It went down. OK it was a little finicky but it went down and then when I went to put it back up it got about halfway up and then I couldn’t get the key to engage the pulley anymore properly to get it to go any further. Any idea what’s going on?

My Ford manual says the side of the spare tire with the valve stem should be up when you attach it to the hoist and lift it upward for storage. That might help it to stay centered on the hoist cable.

    Is that plastic part necessary?

I tried to get my tire off. recently I turned the crank and all it did was clicked. I figure it was cranked up too tight.. I got lucky and let the air out of the tire and it. came right down.. By decreasing the tire pressure it. Slightly loosened up the cable.. I was at home when this happened. I was rotating my tires.. If this would have happened on the highway, With a flat tire. , I would have been in trouble.
