    Mine arrive yesterday so back here learning what I can about it. Found it a bit hard to understand at first but once I got going it's all good. I'm very impressed by just how much you get for so little money. I had been tossing up between this, Kontrol s49 mk3 and MPC Key61. Have yet to try it into MPC Live2 but suspect the end result will not vary much from Key61. A few extra features and a few less synths but they may come on sale Black Friday anyway. While I see the attraction to a keyless version ( I also felt the same about the Korg Wavestate) I do not mind as I have an older NI Kontrol s88 and this makes a good portable controller. Thanks for this review loopop. Formed part of an informed purchasing choice and I know it's going to double as a good tutorial.

    Awesome review! As soon as I saw the form factor I thought "this is the real deal". I'm sad about the mini model key bed based on your report though. A spongy feeling is not the description I was hoping for to describe that key bed! It's regrettable considering how close this little controller comes to perfection. I can't think of a mini keyboard that can compete with this feature set at this point though, even considering Arturia's Keystep CV connectivity / after-touch stuff. Let's see what Arturia does now!

      Also just an FYI, I had to reformat this comment's content twice for it not to be filtered by the automated comment moderation system. If you're in favour of freedom of speech I encourage you to disable comments moderation on your videos, because people like me who take time to write engaging comments end up being discouraged to do so due to the odds of being "shadow silenced" for no valid reasons.

      Thanks for the kind words about the review. This video is new but for a look at my moderation track record, please look at the comment section of the other two videos I published this week (and all prior videos too) - people are eviscerating both devices for things they dislike about them, and one guy even really hates my guts apparently, and all the comments are live and kicking. Sometimes youtube auto moderates comments, sometimes I block certain keywords to make sure people are saying bad things about the gear and not each other - I look at the moderation queue regularly and approve any false flags. Please have a look and then come back here and let me know if I'm shadow banning negative comments about the gear or me.

      @@loopopHey loopop! I'm sorry for not having responded earlier. I absolutely adore you and your channel, and it has never crossed my mind that you were deliberately responsible for the filtering situation I've experienced. I'm also very happy to know that you're actively approving false flags as well! A big reason I'm reviving this comment is because I just discovered that my first gen Arturia Keystep's pitch bend capacitive touch screen was behaving awfully (with clear stepping despite the supposed 14 bit resolution for pitch bend in typical MIDI implementation) when testing/recording pitch bend data in Ableton. I'm extremely interested in the mini version of the Launchkey MK4 (in tandem with my iPad Pro + Digitakt + Digitone setup as that's what I'm dedicated to on my YT channel if you're curious), with the clear intent of using the pitchbend. If it turns out that the mini MK4 versions behave similarly to what I discovered with my 1st gen Keystep's capacitive strips, it would be a deal breaker for me because I'm not prepared to put a full sized keyboard on my desk just to have a physical pitch bend wheel, as even the 25 keys version is way too bulky as an iPad sidekick in the context of my setup. Is there anything useful to know that you could think about regarding the performance of the pitch bend capacitive touch strip on the Launchkey mini MK4 versions, or even about the usability of these keyboards as non official class compliant devices? I was also worried about potentially not being able to remap knobs/pads MIDI CC directly on the device without the editor... Thanks for your time!

    • @loopop
      @loopop  3 месяца назад

      @@Silent_Stillness I’m not sure what you’re asking about the pitch bend, but no, you can’t map ccs directly on the mk4

    • @Silent_Stillness
      @Silent_Stillness 3 месяца назад

      @@loopop I was asking if the pitch bend on capacitive touch strips of the mini versions of the Launchkey MK4 actually behave as smoothly as a physical pitch bend wheel, which can be easily assessed by looking at the recorded pitch bend data in a DAW.
      That's how I discovered the Arturia Keystep (1st gen) was actually a major let down when it comes to the "musicality" of its capacitive pitch bend strip, looking at the data in Ableton there's ridiculous stepping, not at all consistent with a parameter which should have a 14 bit depth... (I'm still curious about the performance of the Launchkey mini MK4 on that front though)
      Thank you for the clarification on the impossibility to map ccs directly on the MK4, that's already a deal breaker for me...

    I'm surprised by all the focus on aftertouch here - what MIDI keyboard controllers under $500 have aftertouch? The KeyStep series is the only one I know of, and I feel like comparing something with knobs/faders/pads to a KeyStep is a little apples-and-oranges. I assume Novation will update the SL line relatively soon to stay competitive with the premium KeyLab line and that will have aftertouch. Maybe it helps that the only synth I have that I really care about aftertouch with is the Microfreak, and I love playing that thing's goofy little touch keyboard.
    Personally as someone who had been debating between a KeyLab Essentials mk3 and the LaunchKey mk3, picking up a LaunchKey mk4 seems like a total no-brainer. The MIDI split functionality and the chord/scale functionality are particularly exciting stuff that the Essentials doesn't have. I haven't been super impressed with the out-of-the-box Arturia integrations on my MiniLab (the V Collection always seems to have completely random knob mapping, rather than just using the macros or something), so don't think I'll be missing that.

      It’s definitely long in the tooth, older but my AKAI MPK249 has aftertouch, several banks of 8 faders, toggles, and encoders, and several banks of drum pads, as well as transport controls (I don’t really use the latter, TBH), a useful arpeggiator and decent keyboard feel (for me anyway). $379 at Sweetwater when I bought mine. I don’t DAW, so it’s a pretty good solution. Not recommending it for everyone, just saying there are def sub $500 controllers with aftertouch.

    Heyyyy Loopop! Thanks as always, for the excellent review. I just picked the Mini 37 up (and will return it). The Play button doesn't send a midi message (I'm a Reaper user-- I like to bind controller buttons to Reaper Actions, as long as the button sends a MIDI CC). The REC button does...... and that makes NO sense, at all. REC button works perfectly in Reaper (Midi Ch. 16, CC 117, which is the standard REC button assignment for most midi controllers). Nice having that, without using HUI or MCU (HUI is so ridiculous and outdated). But... the play button. What in the everloving f--k is their reasoning for this?
    Also, the absolutely insane, stupid oversight from Novation--- THE ENCODERS CANNOT BE SET TO RELATIVE MODE. How the f--k can they forget this, even with two firmware updates since the release? They offer two banks of encoders, per custom mode, and yet... we can't set the encoders to RELATIVE mode in the editor? Stuff like this drives me NUTS. The controller is damn-near perfect, if that play button sent a MIDI message. I cannot believe the inability to set the encoders to RELATIVE mode. They might as well have just put regular knobs on this, like the MK3. Absolute stupidity.

    Do the Mini editions have one-piece plastic key assemblies? I'm referring to the kind where the keys are molded together in a set, and to replace a key you must replace a whole set of keys. The previous versions did, and it makes them disposable once the plastic joints start losing strength.

      @untml Sorry, but I simply believe Novation is old tech, they don't move. They sell us 2019-ish hardware in 2024. Akai has shown a better understanding of the market with the Mini plus. Most customers want to have the flexibility to switch between DAW and DAW-less, and honestly, for 170 EUR they can demand it!
      Speaking of price: The 37 key Akai Mini plus, which has a stand-alone sequencer, 5-pin, USB, aftertouch, pads, knobs, slider, etc. is only 150 EUR. So, price is a bad argument here.

      @@suga4all The Akai MPK Mini Plus offers an impressive price-to-features ratio but it's aimed at a different demographic/practice. It’s more comparable to the Keystep series with extra controls than to the Launchkey. It can't match the Launchkey’s integration with DAWs, especially with Ableton Live which is Novation’s focus for this line of keyboards. It also claims to offer a good quality-to-price ratio but it's difficult to assess this without real use and experience. The Launchkey certainly looks more modern than the MPK, which has a 2010 design, and you can get normal size keys for almost the same price. Neither keyboard includes aftertouch as far as I recall.
      It seems you might be confusing your needs with those of most users. Just read the first paragraph of each product page, it clearly states the intended use.
