    It's not the future you are afraid of, it's repeating the past that makes you anxious ! This is absolutely it.

    Mark your channel is a lifesaver, I was having terrible anxiety and horrible thoughts, but through your videos I learned to accept and not judge my thoughts and feelings. I'm only starting my mental fitness journey but I will make sure to keep practicing like I do with my workouts. 1:14. This statement made me cry, our worth is in our existence, we don't have to prove nothing to anybody.

    Nowadays I see thoughts that involve some uncertainty as not intrusive but as a challenge for myself to practise non-engagement and mindfulness and to live a good life while having this experience. It takes a lot of practice but the journey is worth it :)

    Hey mark, I was just wondering if you consider blocking someone who was a toxic friend way back a compulsion that should be cut out? or rather unblocking them out of the fear that they might see us as enemies and want to do more toxic behaviors… something that should be cut out as well

    • @everybodyhasabrain
      @everybodyhasabrain  11 месяцев назад

      I always approach mental health questions by looking at where we want to go and what we want to build and grow. So I wouldn't look at making a decision based on whether something was or wasn't a compulsion. I'd look at what you want to be giving your time and energy to. Because we can get into trying to clean away compulsions just like any other contamination. Then we're going back to clean things we don't need to spend time on, even if it was a compulsion. So: Where are you going? What will help you go there?

    Hey mark, I really hope you see my message. I started having these intrusive thoughts and ocd almost 2 years ago. With alot of help, i did get better with these intrusive thoughts. But another problem that i have been struggling with is, dating and making new friends. I don’t know if it has anything to do with my ocd or not but these things have been driving me crazy. Whenever i talk to someone new, if they don’t respond to me timely, or sometimes if they ghost me, i have immense anxiety. I know this is not a normal human reaction. Nobody reacts such intensely to a stranger. But whenever i talk to someone new and it doesn’t go well, i get panic attack and anxiety to an extend that i’ll be in my bed all day. Such experiences have just me realise that i should take a break from meeting new people. I don’t know if it’ll make things worse or not. It also scares me that if i stay away from people it’s just gonna make me alone forever. But on the other hand, i have no energy left in me to talk to new people now. I hope you could suggest me something and what’s the right approach here.

      It's very common to do a lot of compulsions around relationships and other people. There are probably some fears and uncertainties there you're trying to control, about yourself or others. I find it most useful to cut out the compulsions. You can see that there are some going on in what you mentioned, like getting upset that people don't respond to you "timely". But who invented the rule about what's timely? If you create some imaginary rule that people don't know about, and then they don't follow that rule, it's natural to get upset. But that's not a problem with other people. You don't have to set imaginary rules like that. I'd be curious what you believe it would mean if somebody followed the rules. What would you get from that? It could be that, whatever you're trying to get, that there are more useful ways to get that. So I wouldn't see it as a solution to avoid people. Instead, I'd cut out the compulsions.

    • @flobbet7066
      @flobbet7066 Год назад

      @@everybodyhasabrain but the thing i’m finding hard to understand is that what are the compulsions here? Me getting a panic attack from the behaviour of others, where i’m not even doing anything on my part. I just see this as an abnromal reaction that I can’t control

    • @everybodyhasabrain
      @everybodyhasabrain  Год назад +1

      But the panic attack isn't from the behavior of others. The other people aren't doing anything to you. They're just being. The compulsions are the rules, the controlling, the checking, the avoidance. I mentioned one in the previous comment: You judging peoples' responses as "timely". That involves a bunch of compulsions--Setting the imaginary rule, checking if people have responded, judging them for not following the imaginary rule, attaching meaning to that, believing it means something about whatever it is you're trying to get there, etc. If we set imaginary rules like that, then it's natural to be upset that people aren't following them. But the people are just being people. They're not doing anything to us. It's the same as me inventing a rule that people on the street should smile at me. And then me getting upset that people didn't smile and me believing that means nobody cares about me and then panicking about that. That would be entirely me doing that.

    But imagine living with the same obsession for 13 years. The same obsession. How can I not want to get rid of it? It sipped all the energy I need to do other stuff and rebuild my life. I’m so tired of it.

    • @everybodyhasabrain
      @everybodyhasabrain  Год назад +6

      You already see what that approach can lead to. And it could really help to see it not as an issue with an obsession, but with compulsions. The sky has been mostly blue for the last 13 years (and that's the wrong color for the sky) but that only interferes with my life if I'm putting things on hold to fix the sky first, or if I'm constantly checking to see if the sky has changed yet, waiting for it to be a better color so I can do important things, spending time and energy thinking about better sky colors, researching other planets online, etc.
