This video is what I needed in my life, thank you so much. Good job
This is a great tutorial on this mod! Clear, concise, no fluff video, easy to understand and great job pointing out some "gotchas" along the way! Surprisingly easy to get to the downpipe to replace it. Hopefully (I'm sure it is) my 540i is the same.
If anything you'll have more space 👍🏾
Really informative and well put together, thanks for posting!
Well done 🔥 Very informative DIY bro! I’ll be using this video for reference if I go B58.
I have to thank you, this video helps me a lot 👍👍
So if I put a catless downpipe I won't need any tune for it to run without any check engine lights?
no
Do you have a recomendation on o2 sensor spacers?
Do you have recommendation for which extension for o2 sensor to use I have heard both sides the longer straight once and longer 90 degree and many companies but eventually they come back on either within 500 miles or within couple thousand
Bouta try this on my 540 wish me luck
How did it go on 540? I am planning on doing it myself.
What is the torque spec for the turbo/exhaust clamp?
I just tightened it til it was fairly hard to torque, with a smaller ratchet. Can you torque it to much so the turbo housing can get deformed?
Does the car smoke/fume a lot more when adding the catless DP? Do u think it would be bearable for a convertible?
No but there is a smell with the windows down. I mostly smell it when coming to a stop and the exhaust catches up to me, but I don't smell it while driving. If you're able to add E85 with a tune it smells much better.
Do you have a video on how I should install a VRSF downpipe to my new M340i x 2020?
It will be pretty much the same
Great video !
Thanks, glad to help
Thanks for the video. I’m thinking about doing this to my 340. How have you liked it?
No issues for me
Is there a way to loosen that bracket that holds the downpipe in place? My CTS downpipe has the mounting bracket welded on to it like the stock one, but its not in the exact same spot and its causing fitment issues. Im about to cut the damn thing off.
You can loosen where it attaches to the transmission. Should be 2 bolts.
kern is vrsf downpipe fine? my mechanic tried to tell me they were ehhh, but i think he just wants me to buy one he has on shelf. vrsf is way cheaper tho
yes it's fine
I own bmw540i g30 2018, and i want to uppgrade the down pippe with a catless one. I have no upgrades on the motor,(340hp original) do u think its a good idee to upgrade it? Will be beter for the motor? I will gain some hp? (Buy the way , ur chanell its awesome, verry informative)
You will see a small gain with just the downpipe but the biggest gains are by pairing it with a tune
Does mhd have a toggle box to clear downpipe codes for the b58 ?
yes
Do I also need V Clamp for midpipe connecting to downpipe and turbo to downpipe? My car has 38k miles on it
no
I think I know the answer but just want to be sure. Im going back to stock DP because I have to pass emission in MD. Should I run all of the E30 out of the tank before flashing back to BM3 stage 1 93 map? With going back to stage 1 93 I'd flash with the upgraded HPFP option selected correct?
It you have e30 you can just flash stage 1 e30
@@kern417 Thnx
@@kern417 at 3:40 that first nut you pointed to is just spinning. Its rusted and is well on its way to being stripped. Any alternative ways to remove it?
do you know what size is the V Band Clamp for the VRSF DP ?
No. Just buy an oem one if needed or reuse the one that came with the car
Why not just unscrew the sensors and not disconnect the the plugs? I did it that way (left the plugs intact) and I had no problems. Is there a reason you are doing it this way? Just wondering and thanks for the time you put in your videos, they are great!
Because it's easier
Any tips for removing a stuck down pipe?
what's stuck? the clamp?
@@kern417 the clamp holding the down pipe to the turbo seems stuck. I have taken the v clamp bolt out but it still seem to tight and does not give any play.
Hit it with a mallet or wedge a screw driver under the lip and twist
What are your opinions on the cts downpipes?
They're fine
will this throw any engine codes on a stock ECU?
Yes p0420 for catalytic converter efficiency
looks to easy LOL my n54 downpipes were 15 hours to do on ramps in my driveway
can this job be done with a hot engine?
I would not recommend hot, but you can do it warm.
@@kern417 thank you man! Also do you recommend a jack or ramps?
@@ants00 either works but ramps are safer
Can we hear it?
Yeah I'll make another video soon. I also have a muffler delete so it won't be the same as a stock catback.
@@kern417 Cheers man...would love to hear it rev and maybe an acceleration clip!
7/8” ? 1/2” ? Nah!
Get some excitement in your voice
This is my excited voice
This was a great video. Thank you for going into detail about the difficulties you had and what you found worked. Doing my install this weekend!
Just did the downpipe on my 340i, following your video. Everything went just as described, many thanks for the help you offered!
did you find the 02 sensor spacer? trying to install my downpipe next week and trying to avoid a CEL
Do you know about what the torque spec is for the downpipe to turbo v band clamp is.
I'm trying to find out too, I have a 2018 440i, can we get a answer to this please
Great video. Good tips for sure too. Especially grabbing that gasket and removing the rear muffler nuts.
Thank you for all your videos when I have a question I type it in on RUclips and you pop up. 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼 thank you for all your help
great vid man. lol'd at Home Depot motorsports. Gonna try this on an f22 in a few weeks. Cheers bruh
Awesome video Kern
will this gasket fit the B48? is it really necesary to buy a new gasket? im having a hard time finding the correct part number fot my model
Hey man I know this isn't related to the video but you are the most knowledgeable person on RUclips that I follow. I already have the stage 2 mhd 93 tune. Would it be beneficial for me to buy an extremely cheap jb4? I plan to use a back end flash to help with controlling meth. I can't find anything online about anyone having a flash tune then adding jb4. It's always the other way around. Would a jb4/mhd combo be beneficial before I get my meth kit or is it only beneficial for meth since I already have a flash tune?
I would skip the jb4 and either put that money towards a hpfp to run the stage 2+ map, or put it towards a custom flash tune for meth.
@@kern417 it's 250 for the wireless one. I just saw that and thought that it would be a good deal but if it isn't wise I'll pass. Thanks for the advice!
@@kern417 Take a look at the Bootmod3 tune. It has lots of options and 4 savable, selectable-from-steering-wheel tunes. At least that how they advertise it. Unless I find bad reviews on it, it's what I'm going with. Base tune on 91 octane is supposed to get up to 18% more HP and better MPG, with not other mods.
@@colbyscott9822 i think you meant to reply to the other commenter. But yes i ran bm3 for almost 3 years with no issues
@@kern417 indeed. My bad. Glad you had success with the BM3!
Have heard there is 5"down pipe in the market, will it make any difference in power.
Not really
Best video i seen so far thank you
Thanks for posting 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Hey buddy are you still running it with catless ?
Heya Kern,
I’ve just fitted a decat and TU pump to my 440i and flashed bm3 stage 2+ and my car is running great.
Only thing is, I have seen on a forum somebody saying this a Vband clamp must be positioned in the same way it came off so that it doesn’t block the wastegate arm, I have mine positioned so the the screw points upwards and I can access it much easier with a socket and extension from the top.
Do you have any opinions on this? Do you think I should move the clamp?
Thanks!
i would not put the bolt near the wastegate travel. it can cause issues.
I wonder why it didn't come with a bracket. All the VSRP catless downpipes for the B58 I've seen all had the bracket. You didn't get a knock off did you?
Look up how the downpipes looked over 2 years ago
Hi Kern, good vid! I just had my downpipe installed by a local garage and saw that they installed the v band bolt rotated differently than stock. I can easily see/reach the bolt.
I read on a forum that this could restrict power by limiting boost (it might be blocking the waste gate). Do you think that can happen?
if it's causing an issue then it'll typically throw a code. you can also put your phone in the engine bay and push the start stop button to put the car in accessory mode (don't turn on the engine) and record if the wastegate is hitting it when it does the calibration cycle.
Awesome. So far no code but I'll make sure to check it. Thanks for the reply, appreciate it!
@kern417 I’m having an issue with my install. Idk if you’ve ever heard of this issue but my exhaust is now leaking at the connection to the mid pipe. It’s torqued down to 18ftlbs.
Do you know of a possible solution or why this is happening
Not sure. But you can try either additing some paste or cranking down on it harder
Hey kern, doubt u will see this but I just got a f32 440i, I have the downpipe already. Do I need to buy a new gasket like you did in the video ? Or can I swap the OEM one onto the vrsf one?
At a minimum swap the oem one over
Bought one from a dealership, and did the installation myself and all went smoothly. Thank you @@kern417
Hey is the downpipe supposed to rattle or sound like something is scratching at first couple 2 gears?? i have stage 2 tune ?? do u think its safe?
It should not be rattling. Your midpipe may be hitting the brace under the car.
I had a tuning shop install mine and he claimed because I had an aftermarket catback and this vrsf, the midpipe bracket doesnt align. Is that possible given the cat back and downpipe are the same size as OEM???
It's possible and common. The exhaust needs to be rotated to prevent it from hitting the midpipe.
How much do you think it costs to have it installed, Is it worth doing it yourself instead of a shop.
Maybe 2 hours of labor, so $150-$200 depending on the shop. For me it was worth it to do myself because every bit helps.
Can you run a catless downpipe without a tune?
sure
Have you had any issues with leaks coming from the down to mid pipe connection.
nope
@@kern417 Not sure if you can verify but some people are saying that clamp from dp to mid pipe comes spot welded on some b58 variants. It was stupid hard to get off so I wonder if it just got damaged in the process and can’t can create a good seal.
Mine is welded to the midpipe. No issues
Which o2 sensor do I put a o2 spacer? The one next to the turbo or the one next to the midpipe?
Yes. Farthest from the turbo.
@@kern417 Can you send me a link for one, I don’t know which one to get or how it looks. A lot of youtubers keep mentioning it during install but don’t show it.
Thank you so much for the insanely helpful tutorial. Learned a lot, wasn't actually sure about the O2 sensor locations because I am replacing with a catted downpipe (i know that one was really stupid, should've looked at fouling). Assuming the removal of the airbox, is it plausible to do this swap without a lift/is it possible. I have a super tight spot and cant get a jack on either side of the car to get it off the ground.
Yes
@@kern417 Awesome, amazing to know. Thank you
@@kern417 Any tips for removing a stuck down pipe?
Looks like a couple of jack stands will work just fine, for this job. Hell, might even be able to just roll it up on ramps.
Home Depot Motorsports 🤣
My favorite speed shop
Hey man love your informative videos. I have a question if you are able to answer I would greatly appreciate it.
So in your video you say the vsrf downpipes can be too large and you need to expand the midpipe however my vsrf downpipe is a lot smaller at that end so the clamp doesn't even secure it. Now I hear a rattling and it's annoying as hell. Do you have any recommendations for a fix or should I just expand the downpipe? I'm afraid it would void the warranty.
Where is the rattling coming from
@@kern417 it's where the downpipe connects to the midpipe. I think the newer vsrf downpipes are skinnier at the end so when I tighten the clamp it's still loose so the downpipe rattles inside the midpipe if you get what I'm saying.
Are you sure because a lot of people get rattles on the brace under the midpipe. Otherwise you're saying you have a huge exhaust leak at the downpipe clamp
@@kern417 yes I've checked and thats exactly what I'm saying. I'm pretty frustrated about it. Planning to take it to a shop today to see if they have any solutions for me. I just ordered this downpipe a week ago so that's why I'm thinking these newer ones are made smaller at that end since people probably complained that it wouldn't fit into the midpipe before.
@@n0nth3t0k3m0n That's unfortunate and definitely a possibility. Sorry to hear you're going through that
any cel problems?
You will get a CEL but i disabled it in my Tuning software
Can you add a racechip and still be fine with the Downpipe. No danger of over boosting or leaning out?
I wouldn't recommend it. Better to run a flash tune like BM3 or MHD
@@kern417 Potential damage you think or poor performance. Thanks for your reply!
@@orlandferras1147 no just not as smooth as a flash tune. Especially with a downpipe you want a tune for it, otherwise you'll get aggressive throttle closures
@@kern417 thank you and great video!
@@kern417 Do your have a preference between MHD and BM3?
Will an E30 tune help with the smell from catless?
A little bit but it still doesn't smell great. You really need e50+ to get rid of the smell
@@kern417 thanks. Any tips on these damn sensors clips? Can't release then from the engine
@@KingOfBattle119 slide the grey locking tab back to pop it out then squeeze it in. Sometimes pushing the clip in before pulling it out also helps release it.
Man, great knowledge,! Subbed
This looks way easier than it is on a e92 335i.
Definitely
"Running E85 will clog up your catalytic converter" LMAO What?
The same way it can clog up your fuel lines/injectors, it can leave deposits in your cat. It also reacts differently with oil blowby in the combustion chamber that creates deposits. So yes, it can clog your catalytic converter.
@@kern417 but it doesn't clog up your fuel lines & injectors? Where is your evidence of this?? Also if your reasoning for fitting the catless downpipe is to avoid it getting clogged due to e85, what are you going to do about your fuel lines lmao
@@kern417 combustion products are the same as gasoline/petrol. Albeit with less sulphur oxides due to lower gasoline content, less nitrous oxides due to lower combustion temps. So your cat will be fine.
"Reacts differently to oil blowby" differently how?? where did you read this garbage?
E85 is not as stable as petrol. It breaks down and separates faster. So i make sure that i don't let the car sit for too long and i run a tank of 93 through the system every now and then. Many people use fuel stabilisers as well. Very common practice to prevent very common issues. feel free to look them up.
Is there any boost creep problems with the VRSF catless downpipe on the B58 stage 2 BM3 OTS tune or in general ?
No
@@kern417 so no over boosting/boost creep causing engine damage by knocking?! I’m super glad the B58 is a tank and doesn’t have that issue . Thank you my man kern for always helping with the a1 content/info
@@kern417 random question lol, what do you prefer on the 440i for the windshield wipers? OEM, Bosch, or Valeo?
Whatever is a good value on FCP
