A rivalry newer players wouldn’t know was one between Isai and DA Wes. People like to meme about “if isai tried”, well the fact is when he played Wes he played him at 110%. I don’t know why but for some reason Isai went after him in the game.
It used to be said “Isai played DA Wes like Wes murdered his whole family”. Another funny thing I saw myself was once DA Wes was calling out Isai on smashboards, and Isai just posted “pick a better character”.
The greatest rivalry is between Dr PP and PPMD

Piggybacking off the top comment. The Leffen Westballz beef was huge for a time. Ill never forget that combo Wes did on battlefield in Beast 5(?) The one with the ledge canceled turnaround grab was fucking insane.
tbh the hbox/armada never felt like an actual rivalrie, just the top 2 players trying to be top 1.

Greatest rivalry for me definitely is Armada vs. The World. He was THAT guy everyone wanted to beat or even take a set off because of his legacy he had during his active days, that's really hard to top.
Of course if we only go with a rivalry between two people than I would probably either go with Mango/Armada or Leffen/Samus.

I feel like a super underrated rivalry is plup/leffen because they haven't matched up in bracket recently but there was a constant back and forth. A niche pick in my opinion would be moky/n0ne for the battle of the best canadian player over the years is pretty close lifetime
Leffen vs Plup was at one point looking like the next generation Mang0 vs Armada. They're the only two Godslayers, it's still USA vs Sweden, and as you said they would go back and forth. I'll always love the period between late 2017 to 2018 where the Melee storyline was begging for a grand finals clash(TBH7, G5, EVO 2018). Shame it never happened; it's the only thing missing to start pushing this rivalry into all-time great territory.

Leffen v chillin is probably the least balanced rivalry skillwise, but it is such an iconic smash moment, probably melee's second best known after wombo combo, and for that alone I put in A (or B :) )

The thing with the Leffen/Hbox rivalry is that Leffen's rise was in a big way measured by his sets with Hbox. They went last hit at Apex 2013, had a salty suite I believe at Evo 2013, another salty suite at Apex 2014 before Leffen beat him for the first time in bracket at Apex 2014. And then they were ranks 5 and 6 that year. I might be remembering some of the details wrong but it's an interesting case where a lot of their in-game rivalry happened before a lot of their in-person (or online) animosity.
Plus, Leffen was one of the few people who really had Hbox's number in 2019 when the cracks in the armor were first starting to show. It was very fun to watch the two "villains" of the scene (and I use that very lightly in Hbox's case, since for the most part it was only because he was so dominant) face off and it was one of the rare moments where pretty much the whole crowd was rooting for Leffen.

I think something worth mentioning about Mango/M2K that carried on even after Genesis was this idea that M2K was the bane of every melee player's existence, who you would dread having to play early on, but Mango was kinda this kryptonite to him, and a major sore spot of his, while at the same time being a player who could make Mango very antsy and slip up because of how much he didn't want to deal with M2K's game pace
I’ve been around since 2017 and I’m just kinda shocked that mango zain isn’t considered a rivalry since I think they have brought the best sets out of melee in recent years by far
Hbox vs Armada, Zain vs Mang0 just to name a couple that are for sure A+ candidates but were left out of the tier list.

Yeah. The Mang0/Armada rivalry had SO much story behind it.
I will say, however, that the Mang0 Zain rivalry that happened leading up to Summit 11 did remind me A LOT of the Summer of Smash when Armada and Mango entered so many fucking tournaments. Constantly going back and forth with who won the tournaments. I can't remember what year that happened in, but I know it was pre 2013 (2011 maybe? Idk).
It's definitely shaping up to be something big and I hope we get something special out of it.
@@xilverknight155 totally agreed, one thing I’d also add is that armada/mango was special because it truly felt like they kept the scene alive and bridged the gap from early melee into modern melee, for a while the story of their rivalry felt like it contained the story of why melee was still popular

This feels like someone who read an article about melee on polygon one time and watched the documentary chose the rivalries. There's so many other options that are actual rivalries. But at least they did include a few good ones.
I think they purposefully picked rivalries that weren't the best so that the tier list could have entrants in the lower tiers. No point in tier list if it's all S and A tier
Would have loved to see Zain's take on this. He was newer to the scene so he would have some more perspective closer to an ordinary viewer during that time. Idk

@@brandonsolis6911 I hear that for low-tier stuff, but 1. They could introduce handicaps. 2. There could be rules that slightly punish frontrunners. Also, I think everyone has a pretty equal chance for the rest of the silly modes. Blindfolded/Tenkaihi/Bingo modes have just the right amount of competition, luck, and on-the-spot creativity, (kinda like Mario Party) to make them super fun to watch.

Ive interacted online with many smashers like Ken, Lucky, Ringler, and HMW to name a few. I’m not their best friend but I can at least talk to them and chill. The one time I interacted with Leffen online was very unpleasant. He was condescending and had a big mouth behind his computer. Like great, you insult people online like it means the same thing as saying it to their face.
I’m assuming people who actually know him would hopefully say he’s actually pleasant in person but as far as online he seems intolerable and immature.

If yall would make a part 2, I would include:
* PPU vs Sfat, they played a lot and were neck and neck. Then had the homie vibes on the team, definitely can be considered healthy rivals.
* PPMD/Mango, this one felt kinda mean but I felt like it leveled up falco a lot. Even now mango kinda discredits pp a bit, maybe its an ego bait for him to come back. This is my favorite in all of smash because it shows what ego can do.
* Hbox / Armada from the Young Link, to solidifying the fox secondary and evo 2016 comeback. Honestly, this could be number 1.
* Bizzaro / Kage (I guess you can put eikelman bc the salty suite). But the gannons were running their mouth for a bit.
* Leffen / Zain, the sheik and icies are a cool part. Nice ingame rivalry.
* Mango/Zain
* Plup / Leffen, lowkey this one is underrated.
* Plup/Wizzy - seeing a Falcon consistently beating a sheik at that era was insane + the cfl local rivalry and in pm. They also both were able to keep it close during hgod era against hbox.
* Hax/Gravy for the smashboxx.
* Hax/Leffen for the skitzo shit
* Honestly just do Leffen vs 5 gods. With the m2k 6-0, mang0 money match, armada, hbox and pretty much all beside PP.

How the heck is Leffen vs Westballz beef only B?? Their set in Sweden was unforgettable. In-game taunts, IRL taunts, absolute slobber knocker sets and a crazy upset from Westballz (even though he eventually loses.) Definitely an A tier beef.

Hugs and Chillin was missing some stuff like the current money match situation, and when Hugs was defending Chillin on twitter and Chillin zinged him back, so after metagame came out Hugs reviewed the new My B footage to see it from another angle
What if they made a Part 2 2022 Edition of this list. Lot of fresh storylines from last year like Zain/Jmook, Mango/aMSa, Cody/Hbox, Axe/Zain, Jmook/Hbox, SFOP/Magi, Zain/Moky, Jmook/Cody, Mango/Zain, Toph/HugS, and of course Hbox/chair and Leffen/the world.

Ken Azen is definitely the prehistoric version. Mango hbox and leffen armada come close but no one would actually put them at the top.

I think PPMD Armada is pretty huge. Just watch Genesis 3 and how Armada reacts from beating PPMD. Getting that sort of response not even in Grand Finals says a lot.

Zain Cody will probably also be one of the all time greats, and Cody Jmook. and Zain Jmook, for that matter haha, though i think Cody is a much more obvious rival for Jmook since they're from the same region. but yeah, any combination of these three players would be up there nowadays. Mango and Amsa and Hungrybox are all also at the top right now, but they dont have the same kind of Rivalry with all of the other tournament-winning players. Like, Zain-Jmook-Cody is kind of a perfect triangle of rivalries, and Mango has a rivalry with Zain, but is Mango-Jmook a rivalry? im not really sure it is, lol. is Hbox-Amsa? hell, does Amsa have a rivalry with anyone? i guess Mango probably wants to have a rivalry with Amsa because of Amsa taking Big House 10 haha, but idk lol

For the mango Hbox rivalry, i wana say some points gotta be given there from the early days of mafia, i think its a big deal mango would want Hbox dead everytime and in any way possible. In a game where theres tons of people and reasons to choose people to kill or find sus, seems like the ultimate disrespect/rivalry that mango was always after hbox
