How $20,000 1985 Chicago Air Jordan 1s Are Professionally Resoled | Refurbished

- The Cobblers is a shoe-repair shop in Miami. The shoe it's working on today is a rare pair of 1985 Chicago Air Jordan 1s that a client brought in to be resoled. The shoe is significant because of its rarity, even in an old condition. Michael Jordan's original 1985 Chicago Air Jordan 1s sold at auction in 2020 for $560,000. On the market, a good pair can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $30,000. Because the client wanted to keep the originality of the shoes, they will be resoled using a donor sole. The team will go through the process of how they do this professionally to give the soles a seamless finish.

As a high school freshman I had these exact shoes. If only I'd known.
Oof
These look too dope, I would’ve never thrown them out even if I didn’t know the value. Jus looks too cool you know
Same I was a sophomore, I still have my 1’s, 3’s and 4’s, never owned a pair of 2’s because they were heavy and I thought pretty ugly. They’re all in the OG boxes and good shape but this is why I moved onto old clothing. An old t shirt if taken care of will last for decades and you can still wear them.
do you still have any 80s shoes laying around?
Same here lmao

If you like this then look up actual cobblers working with leather they have to take a lot more care with that craft This is considered a cup sole relatively easy to work with considering you don't have to sand or cut anything. Look up the tring shoe repair and key shop on RUclips
shoe makers don't get enough recognition for their detailed precise work.
They do, ur just not a sneaker head
@@moefromdagrieve no they dont. most of the sneakerheads care only about the brand, trends, retail price or if its limited edition or not. almost nobody looks at the quality. ofcourse you got real sneakherheads that cares about quality andstuff, but lets be real here most of the sneakers does have a shitty quality and yet people still buy them cause of the earlier reasons i gave.

A lot of sneakerheads don’t want that. They like the old/worn aesthetic leather look.
You could try to look for another restoration video on RUclips
the part when you say we actually prefer stitchin it by hand shows a much you take care of the shoes Nice !
This makes me want to go clean my shoes.
I appreciate the dedication to restitching in the original holes. I am (until recently) a seamstress, and getting the thread back in the original holes is essential for non-wovens like leather, vinyl, or rubber. If you don't, you are weakening the material. Almost like perforated paper.
This is incredibly relaxing to watch a master of their craft at work. The background music is perfect.
I was looking for videos to play whilst working, but I'm not getting anything done with my eyes glued to these! So satisfying!

What I really appreciate here is the attention to detail, craftsmanship, and care put into resoling what is essentially just a “single use” sneaker. Preserving sports history, fashion history, and shoe history is important to many. I will always disagree with the practice of modern shoe hoarders/resellers, and I love to see the owner of these shoes actually using them, or it seems that way if they’re getting resoled.
it's hard to find REAL shoe restorations on YT and not fake one where they just brush of dirt

Well this is immensely satisfying to watch. Thanks RUclips algorithm.
Very nice work. Question, so what’s the value of this shoe with a refurbished sole? Or is that essentially predicated upon whoever is willing to pay the most for it
Who would pay that much for shoes haha
The value of brand new vs. used in these varies significantly and price referencing this pair to a new pair is a little misleading.
Before the sole swap these would probably fetch roughly $1000-$2500 based on size and a few condition factors.
Exactly, the value is really what someone is willing to pay. A true collector would scoff at this as it's not "original", however some may see more value in it that they can wear it again for years and years!
@@RaleighRestorations nice seeing you here Raleigh!
@@jaredtippets6255 haa had to see what was going on in the comments, that's me in the video 😃
Can't believe they used a 3k+ 2015 Chicago for the donor sole instead of some other mid or high
Right that's what I was thinking o.O like a sole is a sole... Doesn't matter which upper it has, so choose the cheapest one. My only thought is that perhaps they didn't want a shoe from 2020 because the sole would be too white, taking one from 2015 means the slightly aged sole goes with the very aged upper better.
@@walterroux291 they could've been reps
Rep soles aren’t high quality. If someone is doing the service they’re gonna do it right... a Jordan 1 low or mid would’ve more than sufficed though and would’ve been cheap
@@emann715 they aren't high-quality? They've had decades to perfect Air Jordan 1's, and they HAVE. They could have used a replica New Beginnings sole and it would have been even better. You don't know what you're talking about, truth be told.
@@xxxod
Unless they’re dropping a few hundred bucks on a pair of fakes, the soles are usually very cheap and incredibly pliable
giving a legendary shoe a new life. Whoever had these sole swapped is going to enjoy wearing these!
Is this a Theseus's ship paradox parallel unfolding?
I was in junior high when this shoe came out! If someone had told me these $65 shoes I begged my parents to buy me would be worth $20,000 now, I would have really been able to argue my point about the value of my parents buying me these shoes!... and a dozen more to keep to pay for college, my first car, and a down payment on a house, etc.! LOL!

Wont put my feet in there.
@@UserAme99 its for collection..
the price will be low if they fully restore the shoe (paint restore)
@@UserAme99 You cannot afford to anyway
@@pathehe9182 They're too blown out to be worth more as original, if you're already doing a sole swap, may as well restore the rest of the shoe so its wearable, of course, by now even Dead Stock are no longer wearable due to the foam in the collar and the midsole air unit breaking down from age, so if they look anything close to "nice" on the outside, you should just leave them alone. This is the shoe equivalent of putting nice wheels and tires on your "all original" barely running beat to shit '69 Camaro Z/28.
my mom had one of these in her teens and she threw them away a few years ago :D
She just threw thousands of dollars away.
Ok, that was cool. I was 10 when those shoes came out and I remember like it was yesterday: everybody cool had to have a pair. If we only knew then what we know now! That craftsmanship is awesome, especially because of the honor that it bestows upon Michael Jordan! Great work.

Using the 2015 pair as a donor is crazy.
exactly bro. Why would they do this with the 2015 Chicagos?🤦♂️They should have used a cheap pair with red bottoms. Now the dude has an 85 pair with incorrect soles. Worthless..

Does this effect the value of the origin shoe if the sole is replaced?
I'm crying and felt so sad watching an old shoe repair 😭
I had a new pair of Jordans every year for school back in those days. I even had the original air max shoes. I also had tons of G1 transformers and GI Joes. I wish I had stockpiled and stored all kinds of stuff. I could have retired confortably if I had known. Haha

Huh. That’s some dedication right there. Shoes made to just toss and buy another pair given new life, the thin leathers used in shoes are always a challenge compared to boot leather. Gotta appreciate the craftspeople doing this work still.

Okay so now that we know that, how can we do the first step of getting the shoes?
That's fuckin beautiful so much history in one shoe
As a kid, I had two pairs of Jordan 1s that I used to skateboard with. At the time, I paid $10 for each pair.
Every time he said 'donor shoe' like it was a heart transplant surgery 🤣
Still looks like something I’d find at the Goodwill
Bravo 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🥲 that was beautiful.
Those look cool with the soles swapped
How is the value of the sneaker affected when it’s refurbished with new materials like in this example ?
Ship of Theseus. After restoring something, is it still the original piece?
I have a few old but generally in good shape sneakers that I need to repair so that i don't have to buy new ones. I've been watching some of these shoe repairs videos for some time now to get some pointers & ideas. The part that is intriguing & important is the proper type of glue. So far I've been using Shoe Goo which works but I wonder if there are better ones out there that are a little more flexible after curing, like the one in the video, which he did not reveal the name of that glue.
Are you familiar with the thought experiment of the ship of Theseus
Where would you find an extra sole lying around
If only those older pairs weren't in the upper $2000s I would love to do a sole swap on a beat up pair. :'( rip last dance
I have a pair of 2006 Lightning 4s that need a new midsole because of cracking any help?
I always has this question in mind, people do restore Air Jordan 1 (1985) as a lot of them were obviously worn, not as nice as brand new ones. However, after restoration using current technologies, e.g. paint, clean, leather replacement, etc, would the shoes still hold the original value (e.g. $10k) or it will go either up or down?
note that the shoes were from 1985, the value was due to the age, if restorated, would the value go down?
The background music makes me cry 😢
Yea like a funeral home
Sweet Jesus that’s expensive I’ve never owned a pair of air 1 Jordans but I respect the game.
Curious as to why the customer went with a sole swap & not a full restore
Ship of Theseus vibes 😏
Pretty cool to watch..
i remember seeing pictures from way back when of Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) with these. im glad i know what shoes to google now lol
What’s the background music ? Name of song ?
Do you know if lebron sneakers can be repaired once the sole has been worn out and the air popped?
Thanks
