  • Growing parsnips in small buckets and small bags is a big 'ask', that's a good enough reason to give it a shot. In this video I harvest parsnips from both with quite different results.
I did a whole series of these videos. This was a first for me growing in bags and I wanted to see if they were better than buckets for growing veg in. I did Grow potatoes in buckets and bags which is best : • Grow Potatoes in bucke... I did Grow beetroot in buckets and bags which is best : • Grow Beetroot in Bucke... How about a third comparison, growing directly in the ground. I have found certain vegetables grow best in the ground. This year I have seen more distortions than normal.

I learned something…there’s no room in my garden for parsnips!♥️🧐

I tried parsnips in a bucket 2 years ago and was not impressed. I sowed mine in late May this year, in nominally flower areas, after savagely cutting back shrubs. It's a pretty damp area, hostas, astilbies and hydrangeas grow well. They germinated well in the warm soil, the leaves have produced a good weed suppressing canopy and they are still all green. Last year, in other parts of the garden, they produced a useful crop. I harvested as I wanted to cook them. Most of them were straight, without legs. That's no digging just weed clearance, a sprinkle of bone meal, a shallow drill and Welsh rain. I think the shrubs will grow back into the spaces for next year, but there is so much parsnip seed in a packet, and not usually worth keeping year to year that when browsing in garden centres is not available, these 'fill in annuals' have done a good job. I suspect my parsnips in a bucket weren't watered as well, and couldn't tap into the soil dampness at depths of 10cm and more. Those whispy roots, looked like they had hunted for water from the side after a spell of hot dry weather. Interesting video.

I used your pre-germinating method and your templates and grew parsnips in fabric bags this year. I was very pleased with my results. I have been harvesting them as required since July. They have been small, because I picked them while young, and very tender and tasty. The ones you got from your bag would keep me happy.
I will be growing more of them next year.

Have only grown them twice. Both times in ground. Last year very good results.
Between 12-18"s long. This year we are leaving them at least until first frost.
I suspect the buckets and bags just aren't deep enough to allow the main tap
root to put all the plants energy into one main root, rather it puts energy into
growing multiple additional roots stunting the main root growth. Multiple roots,
(looks like it's hairy) are the enemy of Parsnips and Carrots. Just harvested our
first batch of Carrots yesterday, best harvest yet. We did spend a lot of time
digging that bed deep, riddling it, adding vermiculite, making it obstacle free.
Was well worth the time. All about 7-10"s, blunt tip, and straight
It seemed the ones in the bag weren't as hairy Jim. Wonder if that's due to
    air pruning?

Hi Jim. I'm thinking this is just an off year for certain vegetables. I am going to try to grow parsnips again next year; I put some in the ground and no success. A rodent may have eaten them at a tender stage. Let's see how next year goes; I bet things will turn around and give you bumper crops! In nature, we just have to laugh at the quirky state of things sometimes! A warm hello to you and the missus from across the pond.👵🐟🐠🐟🌱🌱🌌🌠🌠💕🌿🐟

My first go at parsnips in a rather heavy soil raised bed did pretty well. Did not try this year. lol, probably beginner's luck. I do really like them, but here they must be harvested as the ground freezes quickly in late autumn. I nearly didn't get them out the first year, was lucky to have a warm spell after freezing. I did consider a bag that was left unused but thought it ws too late

I think it's maybe poor weather conditions this year that has halted the growth, possibly no matter what container or ground would have ended up the same result, definitely be worth trying again next year and pray for some better weather, love the videos, lots of love from South Wales in the UK

Hi Jim! Do you happen to know, can you use the parsnip greens (the fresh, baby ones) as you would parsley greens?

I’m in Zone 8 B - I do not believe I can grow parsnips. I’m in a “short day” region so I cannot grow most onions either. Parsnips would be nice…..

I just learn that it is better to grow daikon radish or icicle, than parsnip. They grow much faster.

Wonder why they formed kind of a ball shape?
Maybe a taller tub would encourage longer root vegs?

I dont know parsnips, but I expect that when the small root TIPS reach bottom - the parsnip itself stops trying to push further down.

Too much nutrition at the surface of your bucket. No need for the root to travel to search for nutrients all they need is in the top 3 inches of the soil just my opinion.
