Couldn’t disagree MORE with your Chinese Satellite take. That is easily one of the most musically gorgeous tracks on the record IMO and the themes of lack of spiritualism and wanting to believe you can be reunited with those you’ve loved and lost but knowing deep down you can connect with me so hard.

ICU is probably my favourite honestly, the way she sings "I don't know what I want until I fuck it up" really hits me. I think Punisher is such a consistent album, I often find it hard to sit through an album front to back without jumping around or skipping but Punisher just keeps me engaged the whole time and ends on such an insane high note with I Know The End.

That line in "Halloween" is her subtly saying that she's willing to commit murder for love. In 2003, a fan was killed after a dispute over the teams because people feel too passionate about their sports teams and are willing to commit murder over them, just like Phoebe.
"Always surprised by what I do for love
    Some things I never expect
They killed a fan down by the stadium
Was only visiting, they beat him to death"

i think what makes chinese satellite so good is how dramatic it is. it’s the sense of raw emotion you get from screaming and crying in your bedroom and that’s conveyed beautifully in the song. it’s not my favourite but it’s definitely up there, in fact my favourite line on the entire album is “swore i could feel you through the walls, but that’s impossible” just because of the sheer desperation in her voice. idk to each their own but i think there’s something to really enjoy in that song

I Know the End is intentionally the only song that builds in that way because it's meant to take all the ideas of the album and releases that energy in a cathartic way. It feels more powerful in contrast to the rest vs. if she were to do that in more songs it wouldn't have as much impact.

  • @eleanor6681
    @eleanor6681 2 года назад +16

I’m not sure if someone has mentioned this, but the music that plays in DVD menu is what plays in I Know The End during its climax with the screams. Really helps connect the album for me (along with the lyrics in I Know The End that tie back to lyrics of previous tracks in the album).
I appreciate your thoughtfulness into the album! I’m glad you liked it. And I hope you’re able to get back to a state of less numbness & dissociative symptoms soon. It is something I often encounter with myself & I get how exhausting being back at a place like that can be. I hope you can get some restful sleep, and time to reconnect with yourself & the things that have potential to bring joy.
Good luck & I send many well wishes your way.

This is my AOTY for 2020. It’s a special record to me, I can’t hear it without remembering the isolating walks I took during the deepest parts of lockdowns. In some way it helped me feel both totally alone but also a sort of connection with Bridgers, which was much appreciated during that time.
Also big disagree about Chinese Satellite, it hits the theme of spiritual yearning so hard, it almost makes me cry every time it hits that first chorus

  • @Purplepentapus_

It bothers me that not only was Brad pausing through I Know The End, thereby disrupting the flow and build of the track, but that he's also heard the song before outside of the context of the full album and the whole journey of reaching that end point. I think one of the most rewarding things about the song is being in the emotional current of the album and having no idea how colossal its going to become. The first time I listened to this album, the last song stopped me dead in my tracks, it was one of the most enrapturing experiences I've ever had and the screams absolutely rip my soul apart but leave me feeling almost purified in a way. I Know The End is like an emotional exorcism, it takes all of the dark, horrible feelings you've kept locked away and brings them to the surface and then violently tears them out of your body

this is why it's so interesting to watch others' reactions!! what u think is the most forgettable track is easily my favorite of her entire discography. "graceland too" hits me like no other song has ever been able to. i can't even listen to the opening chords without tearing up. something about the gentle melancholia of it makes me feel more alive than any other track on this album. "she can go home, but she's not going to" -- the implication here being that u don't have to go home, u can go to the people u love instead. "said she knows she lived through it to get to this moment" -- the implication _here_ being that one day when u do find the people u really love, all the pain and heartache will have been worth it just to eat a sleeve of saltines on someone else's floor. there's something so incredibly hopeful about this track that i don't think any of her other songs really manages to capture. it's interesting that the more reactions i watch, the more i notice that people in general don't tend to love this song. absolutely crazy to me since i bawled my eyes out upon hearing it for the first time. anyway, great reaction!!!!

Found your channel yesterday it's so funny because Graceland Too really grew on me and became one of my favorite songs just because of how I relate to it.
The song is about her spending time at a mental health facility and being able to leave and do whatever she wants with her life now.

can't wait to see Brad's reaction to Savior Complex
Edit: yeah, the violins are what put it over the top for me. Love the pop-off on the violins.
Don't entirely agree, just because this is one of those patented Phoebe Bridgers songs that have me apprehensive at the start and then knock me down like an old brick wall past the first chorus. RUclips recommended it to me, and it was the first Phoebe Bridgers song I ever heard. There's a lot there.
But yeah, I hope you've had a good time with the album so far. You seem to be liking it :)

I'll have to disagree with you on Chinese Satellite. Out of all these songs, the lyrics spoke the most to me, and I interpreted it differently on my sixth listen compared to my fifth. The meaning is always expanding in my mind. It's so general yet specific at the same time and it paints a picture that's gonna stick with me.

For Chinese satellite I much prefer the live from sound city version it's way less dramatic and it's so much more feeling to the point where it's my favorite song of hers, it feels like it's the way the song should be.

Phoebe’s producer who is responsible for most of the unique timbres is Ethan Gruska. If you can, check out his album En Garde and you’ll be blown away with the electro-folk production

A comment to the line in "Halloween" mentioning the fan killed at the stadium: The line before states that she's "surprised what she'd do for love". Bringing this to the extreme, you could say people killing people over their "love" for their team is comparable.

13:55 I think what she’s saying here is that people will do crazy things for love, “Always surprised by what I do for love” and then she gives an example about sports fans killing an opposing teams fan out of the love for their own team.

one of the most beautiful things about this album is that one bit in chinese satellite. where she was saying how she may not believe in god but hell she would be one of those people on the corner of the street preaching about him if it meant there was a chance at an afterlife where shed meet them again. thats how i interpreted that bit at least

I felt kind of similarly about Chinese Satellite, but the Copycat Killer version of it on spotify is a much more stripped back version with most of the instrumentals aside from strings taken away, and I find that version hits way harder for me. I think the original is gorgeous, but I feel the emotional impact way more with just her voice and some really stunning strings.

I find all of the fire and murder lines fascinating, just because I feel like no one ever talks about those kind of intrusive thoughts or impulsive reactions, and the fire lines are in reference to Phoebe's childhood home burning down, which translates beautifully in her music (like how it effected her)
