I would happily watch an entire series of specifically this: seeing a producer and an instrumentalist for an artist discuss the artists songs. This is a really great episode among great episodes.
She's overexposed in a way that I'm sure Leslie Feist can relate to, but a conversation like this brings you back to what makes her such an exceptional writer. And Tony is right - the lyric drives the train. She's so, so skilled in blending the conversational with the poetic.
I wish they would talk about craft more than what someone looks like, what they're wearing, who they are dating, and their obvious publicist curated origin story. Every interview is so boring. Most artists are all asked the same, stupid shallow questions when they have so much more to offer. More of this stuff. There is so much that goes into it on so many levels. Her teeny bopper fans are hearing a completely different album than me, a 54-year-old musician and production junky. She is one of the best songwriters I've ever heard. The lyrical skill, not the content.
The best comment I've seen about Pheobe is from a video here on RUclips: "She is like if the Moon was a person." I always felt that went so well with her music. It is ethereal usually.
Phoebe Bridgers is a hard hitting enough songwriter by herself that I'd love her music even without the clever production. BUT, learning these extra steps is so cool on top of all that, too!
This episde is special, there's something about having people involved with the track that just brings such an extra dimension to the breakdown of the songwriting. More episodes like this please!
21:52 "That's good construction, you presage a line that is gonna take a larger role later". Like when the 'DVD Menu' melody came back in the breakdown of 'I Know the End' and hit me like ton of bricks.
This has been the best episode by far, having a producer and instrumentalist directly involved with the music being featured combined with loads of discussion about how the production and songwriting intersect was just wonderful
I don't know of you guys have done a video on them but the band Big Thief and Adrienne Lenker her solo work would be soo interesting to see. Their music just stands out , Im not a folk fan but man they made me enjoy folk music
THIS 100% - adrianne's lyrics never fail to amaze me and there are soooo many cool things going on in their songs (like the percussion in "time escaping") that you kinda feel absorbed by the sound in the best way
Punisher might become a record as iconic and cherished as Joni Mitchell's Blue. It is phenomenal. It gives me the chills and nearly makes me cry. Her lyrics are fascinating although I don't ever really know what she is talking about but it hits hard and deep nevertheless. Already the first few lines of the album: "Someday, I'm gonna live In your house up on the hill And when your skinhead neighbor goes missing I'll plant a garden in the yard" WTF??? I have no clue but its awesome.
she's killed the skinhead and planted a garden to hide the body. Thereby metaphorically burrying racism and making it look pretty like the rose parade in Pasadena. ( that's what it makes me think of anyway) 😊
10? years ago my in-laws hosted a small stage at their studio for a little annual music festival in Pasadena. My girlfriend (now wife) was in charge of booking bands. If I remember correctly, she knew Phoebe from school and booked her for the show. Her set was amazing and her performance really stood out. I think everyone knew it was something special. It's awesome to see how successful she is now.
I have to admit, I haven't really been conscious of Phoebe Bridgers before this, but these songs instantly drew me in. Tony and Harrison were fascinating. This could have been two hours long, and I'd have watched the whole thing
I tend to stay out the comments but we need an episode on Hiatus Kaiyote. Its not often a band comes along and it changes how other bands decide to “change their sonic aesthetic” to “feel like” said band. I can’t count how many times ive heard in the last 6 years someone say “oh they sound like…that riff is like…that harmony is very…etc.. hiatus kaiyote-ish”. Anyways, do Hiatus damit!!!!!!!! :)
This is genuinely one of my all time favorite albums, and it kills me that NO ONE ELSE seems to remember or care about it. No skips, start to finish flawless album. Didn't realize Tony was behind it, but that makes sense.
You can do an entire series on Phoebe´s music and I´ll watch it 20 times! I can´t remember the last time it happened to me that I connected so deeply with an artist.
What a delight. A whole series with Tony and friends about Phoebe's records? Sign me up! But then, I love the variety of people and music you cover too.
Awesome episode. Phoebe is one of my favorite person in the planet. I’ve dreamed her so many times. She makes me cry like a child. WHATEVER. SOMEONE HAS AN IDEA OF THE PLUG-IN THEIR TALKING ABOUT? :) Long life to Phoebe and her friends
I've heard of people having success recreating the sound with SoundToys effect rack (which is a plug-in that's collection of plugins) and having Crystalizer at the end of the change and then really good audio engineering to mix it with the other guitar
Can't believe I didn't catch this sooner. Loved this interview, just awesome stuff. Phoebe is the only artist who has made music that I've gotten a crush on, if that makes any kind of sense. I wish I could hug her songs. They're so sad and beautiful and mellow and lovable.
Fantastic as always! 💙 You’ve mentioned Punisher in some previous video, so I’ve been listening to it a lot, it’s mind blowing, I’ve never heard something like that. Thank you Jack & Friends 😊👍🏼
Seeing Phoebe Bridgers live - as amazing as she is - is worth the price of admission just watching Harrison Whitford play. That man is a magician on guitar. Just look up live versions of “Motion Sickness” to see what I’m talking about. He’s got this in flashy way of being a virtuoso behind the scenes, in like a latter day Jonny Greenwood way, or Dave Rawlings backing up Gillian Welch.
I know this is never gonna happen, but man I'd love to hear you speaking about The Empyrean by John Frusciante. No more words needed. Much love to Phoebe and this episode, Kyoto is a banger!
Whitford is indeed amazing! Go and check out his music, it's just about time when he will gain way more success. When I saw him opening for Pheebs here in Berlin I was just blown away. Full house, patient, quiet & disciplined German audience and his amazing performance filling up this quiet space with shitloads of people ... My Gosh, what an experience. From that moment on I was taken :D
Tony answers questions perfectly and beautifully. He’s either full of crap or genius. I’m sold. Pretty sure that having Midler and Waits (and other legends) in his back pocket, genius applies. Another great producer, another great interview, another great show. Thank you
I was literally rewatching her play Bo Burnham’s “That Funny Feeling” and this video came up in my recommended, posted 38 mins ago?? I guess we’re all in a phoebe mood
man i kinda wish they'd talked about i know the end, i love the contrast between the two parts and it would have been really interesting to get an insight into the songwriting and production process behind it. rlly loved this though !
First of all one of my fav album thanks for making this episode!! I found it a bit frustrating when the producer was being secretive about the techniques and plugin, I love how some of the greatest producers/eng nowadays on youtube open their hearts out and are not so secretive as it seems like historically has been the case. I mean cmon this guy is not gonna loose any work if he says what plugin he used 😅 anyway for anyone who's interested in the production of garden song an engineer named Ben Davey wrote an article in his blog mix perspective going in deep into this song and re creating the effects, sharing even the presets plugins (he gets really close to it) and he does a much better job at explaining the production of this song than the actual producer
please please if there is any more. I learned so much in this one episode and felt the passion and need for being a creator and being around creatives. I'm inspired, thank you !! Phoebe f*ckin rocks
Ryan's comment at 12:00 about "phone" lyrics regarding phones is interesting; I've been listening to his music forever and I recall thinking back then that the lyric in "This Is My Piano" about a Macbook Pro was very jarring.
Like all records I have come to think of as truly great, the first couple times I listened to Punisher, I thought 'Well, its pretty good, I guess', with a tinge of disappointment, but instead of moving on, I just *kept* listening to it, over and over and over and over, and didnt really notice until a couple weeks had passed, and I genuinely hadnt listened to another album. After about a month of that, I had to take it out of the car, and hide it in a book case, so that I wouldnt burn too much of what I was up to into it, and not be able to hear the music for all the life it was printed on. Titanic effort. This was a great conversation, Berg seems like a terrific person.
Just ‘discovered’ her on Austin city limits episode with Olivia Rodrigo . You must see the performance there even much more powerful with her great live band As a older singer songwriter I feel great hope for music in the future and my daughters musical career
YAAAAS! I'm so happy right now 😄 The guests were amazing! Punisher is such a great album (my favs are Savior Complex, I Know the End, Graceland Too, Halloween and Chinese Satellite) and very haunting (sound wise) in my opinion :B. English is not my 1st language (spanish is) so most of the time my first approach to an album is through the melody and then I really look at the lyrics so I remember the first time I heard it, to say that I was "amazed" is an understatement 😍 PS: and thanks to Phoebe I started to listen to Christian Lee Hutson. Atheist is my fav right now ❤️
Oh my gosh! These comments!! I’m so out of my element w the breadth of your audiences’ music knowledge but I love it and am learning so much! This is one of the most in-depth comments sections I’ve ever been privy to and I love it 🥰
Excellent work guys! Always compelling and informative. Plus, you're great at inviting smart, talented and dare I say, nice musicians to do break-downs of their work. Kudos all.

Yes. The whole channel is incredible but this takes the cake.
agree... 100%
*Punisher* is one of my favourite records ever! So this video was SO interesting!!!
If you ever need a guest to talk about the beatles and radiohead. It better be this guy.
@@lolzlarkin3059 I'd love to!

If your watching this in or after Aug 2023.. the plugin that the old guy didn’t want to share is Lossy by Goodhertz. It’s $60

She’ll definitely be known as one of the best singer songwriters of this generation. Punisher will be a classic iconic album for sure

omg I hadn't even noticed that yet and I've listened to that record dozens of times. I like the bird in your teeth lyrical callback
So, She reprised a line from a previous song in a different song?
This has been the best episode by far, having a producer and instrumentalist directly involved with the music being featured combined with loads of discussion about how the production and songwriting intersect was just wonderful
I love how you add the defintion to these musical terms. As someone who is starting to get more serious about music I love this stuff.
