    Finally a tree service that keeps the wood and turns it into firewood.. Apparently he has the space to make things work for him and he is the kind if boss to keep the employees working when slow..

      Yup, I think space is a big problem for them, I have one service around here that sells firewood but only has about 20 ibc totes full at a time.

    You both hit the nail squarely on the head with one sentence. It gives the workers something to do to retain them during the slow season of the year. That is how we got into firewood buisness. The tree service side outperforms the firewood side hands down but both can legitimately stand on their own. In December tree service comes to a halt here and every January I would have to rehire a crew and train them again. Now they join the yard guys and have an income for a very merry Christmas.

      Definitely! Every time I get a nice piece of Honey Locust to cut, I wish I had a Woodmizer and a shop! That stuff is gorgeous wood, and would be great for butcher blocks, end tables, stools, etc. It burns very nicely, too- and splits pretty easy, so I'm not TOO disappointed, lol.

    It's a hell of a side gig for a tree guy- instead of paying to dump it, make it into firewood and sell it! You get paid twice for the same log.
    Quite a few around me do it- they hang onto the best pieces of desirable species, bring them back to the yard, and have the guys buck them up when between jobs. (you can even call it chainsaw training) I see their ads on marketplace, and have bought from two of them. Each time it was excellent premium quality wood, no dirt, trash, etc.
    One sells out of racks at his family's Stihl dealership. I actually use his pile of massive logs as a landmark, lol. Ash/Maple mix, mostly- but I've found red oak and black locust in there, too, and the maple is 50/50 soft and sugar. Some of the best looking Ash I've ever had I got from that guy.
    The other guy posts a whole list of species he has in the yard for you to pick from. It's fresh cut/green wood, mostly- but I have racks, and it's top quality stuff, and in generous amounts. ( and I didn't have to buck it, haul it, or split it!) He uses one of those 1 ton dump body trucks they all use for hauling mulch and stuff. I definitely asked for his card, once I saw what was in the truck.

      Call them, stop in and them know you want wood....ask....they are looking for dump sights. Most pay to get rid of trees at land fills. If you show up with a big dump trailer to a tree job site they will fill you up!

    You're in the same position Chris with working out where you want your firewood business to go.
    It was easier for David branching out because he used employees already on his books from the tree service and it's a big step taking on someone you have to pay a wage to and find work for everyday. Sounds like he was using vehicles and machinery from his tree service as well.
    You have that opportunity for free firewood from your mates place etc. and that will only grow if you went down that track.
    I've often watched your video's and thought about you having a permanent cutting crew of two supplying logs back to the woodyard.
    There would be some growing pains doing it along with all the hassles of working out what to do with the added revenue. I've got a bank a/c doing nothing you could use if that'd make things easier.
    It's a mindset too because employees are anything but a liability because everyone of them is adding to your bottom line and that is revenue you can't produce any other way.
    It's your own fault if an employee isn't making you money and not the employees.
    If the wages are coming out of your own pocket then you really value and appreciate your employees unlike managers etc. with no skin in the game.
    I had a contracting company in the mining game and the biggest I got was 14 employees and at that time with machinery it cost $25k a week before I made a profit.
    On that job I outlaid over $100k before the invoices started rolling in and my biggest problem was the taxman but that's a mindset too because paying a lot of tax meant you were making a lot of money.
    I'm old now but I spent my life looking for opportunities and I was never going to leave this life wondering what if.
    I took the plunge three times at starting businesses from scratch and there's even a song that says "two out of three ain't bad"
    And I think it was Kenny Rogers with "know when to hold em and know when to fold.
    I took on Rupert Murdoch in the newspaper business and lost but only with my money and never the banks but that's another story.

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  2 года назад +1

      I had 7 employees at one time for 20 years. Not really interested nor do I need to have them again, Yes they could make me more money but they come along with headaches for me and management is not something I want to do again.

    • @tbonemc2118
      @tbonemc2118 2 года назад

      @@InTheWoodyard You don't need to make excuses.
      Only you know what's right for you.
      Hey I was thinking about one of your recent videos when you mentioned stretching chains.
      I'm pretty certain you'd have the oiler set right but have you thought about slowing down the saw speed? (not the chain speed)
      I've been thinking about what would cause the stretch and was wondering whether the blade speed was set too aggressive for the chain.
      On a chainsaw being too aggressive just stalls the chain but maybe the processor has too much grunt to allow that to happen and as a consequence the chain is getting worked over.
      It gets expensive throwing away stretched chains quicker than need be.
      Not sure about taking out a link because the clutch sprocket will probably wear quicker.
      I've stretched a lot of chains to their limit and then thrown them away but as I've said before somewhere we didn't use any bar oil to avoid oil contamination on the pipe we were cutting.
      Chains are very tough which just makes me think yours is copping a flogging to stretch so quickly.

    • @pyroman6000
      @pyroman6000 2 года назад

      Looking at the massive pile of work needing to be done at Chris's I don't think he'd have any problems finding work for a helper, lol! There's logs to be cut everywhere, rounds to be split, wood to be stacked, messes to clean up, etc. It's finding someone as crazy as us and willing to work that hard, that's the rub...
      You HAVE to be seriously mental to be out making firewood in JULY... I see I'm in good company!
