    A machine is just a machine, It has no soul. I had the privilege of standing on the ramp and listening to Skip Holm fly the 500 mph laps. Cool as a cucumber and cold as ice. Saw the Titans Rare Bear and Strega duke it out when The Bear still had the 3 blade prop. Stood on the ramp and held my breath as they did power runs on the Bear and you FELT the power in your whole body. Fantastic machines pushed well past there original intentions. The engineering , the ingenuity of it all. Fantastic! The soul of a machine like this is the person that straps it on and becomes one with it. Willing to risk it all for what I can only imagine as terrifying and exhilarating beyond belief. For those brief moments in time over that short 64 miles. A machine with no soul is a living, breathing ,being. Man and machine have become one. I for one am thankful I got to experience the unadulterated fun of the Reno Air Races in its glory days.

      Amen!. . . I grew up on this in HS, was my favorite sport to follow, but my parents would never let me or Us go :( I just heard of the closures and restrictions. . . I used to dream at night of those Warbirds screaming over pylons.

    Came from England with some good buddies in 2001 but the 911 issue dealt with that show. Saved up and came back in 2003 in a Winnebago full of Vodka, Beer and all the things that are unhealthy. Love this place and love the people (especially the Saunders Brothers) and planes more than you will ever know. DO NOT LET THIS EVENT GO AWAY. I only have CD's of the racing left but would really want to show up again to the real thing. BIG REGARDS Steve

    The whine as those unlimiteds are coming around the corner is by far my favorite sound in the world, it’s a sound we wait for all year and it never gets old. I’m lucky that my family brought me out when I was young and I got to grow up seeing Rare bare, Voodoo, Strega, and September Pops run, memories I will always have.

    Made Reno nearly every year as a kid and longed for that week in September more than my birthday. The unlimited class at its peak in the early 2010s is something I will never forget. Sad to see that class of aircraft slowly fade away. Nothing compares to the sound and feeling those juiced up old warbirds gave off as they passed by the crowd.

    Excellent summary of the feel of Reno. When future enthusiasts look back on the Unlimited air racing, I hope they are inspired by the great people that toiled over these incredible machines. And the pilots who pushed the very edge of piston engine performance, in radical prototypes or highly modified versions of the fastest 1940's fighters, at low level, at 450 mph, loaded with high octane fuel, oxygen and nitrous. People who have explored further even, than the original manufacturer needed to go.
    Thanks for producing something that will increase interest and support for air racing.

    A lot of great pilots out there, but a lot of those unlimited planes been tweeted by the best in the business, Pete Law and Bruce Boland. Unlimited racing wouldn’t be the same without those two key players. It’s unreal to live so close to chino and talk with some of the best and see secret Pete occasionally.

    Best video I've seen about the "bygone days" of The Reno Unlimited Air Races so sad to see it die a slow painful death.
    Strega, Rare Bear, Dago Red, Voodoo, Tsunami, Red Barron, Dreadnought, September Fury, Miss Ashely II, Critical Mass, Czech Mate, Precious Metal, Conquest I, Super Corsair, Risky Business, Mr. Awesome and Galloping Ghost to name several highly modified Unlimited's many are still air worthy many have crashed some are in museums and some converted back to stock.
    It's just too expensive to race these amazing planes anymore. I'd love to see one more race with these planes duking it out around the pylons...but it will never be, so sad.

    • @Oldbmwr100rs
      @Oldbmwr100rs 2 года назад

      There's no planes left to build a racer from anymore. The war ended generations ago, the planes all sold long ago, finding anything for them is almost out of the question. Unless anyone steps up to start making reproduction specialty airframes for racing the old warbirds will be seeing less airtime. This is not to say someplace can't do this though, in Poland they still have facilities left from the cold war who are capable of making what you want, but for a price. For a while one factory was making all alloy Shelby Cobras under contract to some US company.

      It is dying, sad. but true...did you see full grandstands there in 2021? (It used to be practically standing room only) That's what it'll take to keep going and the "highly modified" Unlimited's not just stock WWII era airplanes.
      The Unlimited class is what most fans come to see and it's become pretty much stock planes taking "parade laps" around the pylons now. But, don't get me wrong I'd be there in a heartbeat if the "Big Boys" would come back...but that's wishful thinking.

    • @jbshoo39shoolroy45
      @jbshoo39shoolroy45 2 года назад

      @@harryberry474 I totally see what you’re saying. You would be correct in saying the grandstands don’t fill up like they used to. But trust me, people still show up, and people still love this event. Maybe they don’t come to see the “bad boys of air racing” anymore, because most of them have retired. But it’s the new wave of Racing that is now drawing more and more people back. The sport class has three airplanes going 400+ mph. The jet class is always exhilarating and now more exciting than ever. The new STOL drag class is always fun and thrilling. And hey, Miss America and Dreadnought put on a pretty dang good show for the unlimiteds last year. I don’t need the crazy modified 500 mph monsters that once were (though we’d all love to see them back) I just love hearing and seeing those WW2 planes take to the sky. No where else in the world do we get to see these aircraft race like this. No, the races aren’t what they used to be. They’re something all new and exciting in so many different ways. If I were you, I’d come see for yourself.

    • @harryberry474
      @harryberry474 2 года назад

      @@jbshoo39shoolroy45 ...Whenever I went to the Reno Air Races I drove 13hrs (one way), so your comment "I'd come see for yourself"...that's too far to drive (for me) just to be disappointed.
      And I know I would be, most of the enjoyment I got was watching the Unlimited's and walking around the pits. Also the sound of the highly modified racers was unforgettable you could really hear the difference between a semi-stock and a full tilt Unlimited, I'd get goosebumps from that sound. AND I'd like to keep those memories in tact. If I want to go to an "air show" there's one locally every year which is close to home which I very much enjoy.

    Awesome video as usual. I've been a long time subscriber of your channel and think you get me closest to the feeling of being there. In fact your videos are what I've shown to people to convince them to come with me to the races. I'm an aviation fan living near YYJ, and have taken at least five nube people to see the show over the years. All this is to support my request to you, and I have also suggested to Jaun Brown over at the Blancolireo channel. Would you do a series of a few videos of the history of the races? Possibly touching on the notable planes people and politics that have been involved over the years? I think there's an audience like myself out here that would find extremely interesting. I have over the years tried to surf for information and have found a few people past and present like Larry Burton (blind man's bluff), Bob Pond (pond racer), the guy who restored the f2g with the white blade, the scandinavian with the thunder mustang team, the guy who built nxt, the guy who built the harmon rocket, Joe Ganno with the band l39 pip squeak, the guys who built precious metal, the history of dego red and so on etc. These are just some of the things I have unearthed with my curiosity and found fascinating. I would be awesome if an insider like yourselves took the time to sit a few of these guys and gals down to record the history and the bullshit (in a good way) of the eight mile miracle! Please I'm pleading! You guys are awesome.

      Thanks for following us and liking our work. Our long term goal is to get actual interviews from past and present pilots and teams. We aren't actually that connected, we have been trying over the past ten years to better align with RARA so we can get more connected to the event. I like your ideas and you probably have better information than we do. We grew up out in the desert and for many years didn't know the pilots and teams as much as we knew the mystique of the planes themselves. Over the past ten years we've gained a great appreciation for the pilots, teams, and volunteers as we made the transition from the desert to the ramp. So many stories still need to be told, you have mentioned a few examples. We will continue to work on those ideas you mentioned. I did regret a little not having any old footage of Dego Red in this video. I do have some clips of Dego with Skip at the controls. We need to get better with adding pilots and crew interviews it's where we are really lacking. We like you are just huge fans of this event and we strive to inspire those that haven't been to the races to go. We mostly shoot to inspire the pilots, crews, volunteers and of course the fans. Thank you again for your comments.

    Nice history of the old races. Too bad you don’t show the fastest planes at Reno…..yup, the Jets ! 500mph +. The unlimiteds have yet to break that 500mph mark but the Jets do all the time.

  • @michaelschindele5484
    @michaelschindele5484 3 года назад +5

    For all purposes , unlimited racing at Reno is dead . None of the fastest planes race there anymore . They all got tired of competing every year out of their own pockets . A little bit of showup money and free gas was all they would get . Meanwhile the Reno air race commitee would would pocket millions . Dreadnaught , who hadn`t won since 1985 , has won it the last two years , with speeds of 425 and 428 respectively . That`s 60 to 70 miles an hour off the pace of the faster unlimiteds that refuse to show up anymore . Not any kind of a race , just plain bullshit instead . A lot of other unlimited racers didn`t show up either . After attending for 28 years , I wouldn`t go to Reno again if it was free to get in . Yes folks , the air race commitee has ruined it for everyone , as I predicted they would , twenty years ago . There aren`t even enough unlimiteds flying to fly any competitive heats . The heats they do run end up being one boring parade after another . They ruined it . Don`t go , it`s not the same .

    • @reltney20
      @reltney20 2 года назад

      INCORRECT….. THE UNLIMITEDS ARE PAID TO ATTEND. All other classes and even the fastest class has to pay(Jets). The unlimiteds are paid to show and race. Their top prize is $200,000. The praise for the faster Jets who pull 500mph + get $9000 for being the fastest at Reno .

    • @michaelschindele5484
      @michaelschindele5484 2 года назад +1

      @@reltney20 You sir are incorrect . How many years in a row did you hang out in the pits and listen to the top dogs in the unlimited class complain about how much it was costing them , out of their own pockets , just to show up and compete . The show up money wasn`t enough to cover basic expenses . As for the 200,000 first place prize money - peanuts . You can make more than twice that winning a lousy golf tournament . That isn`t enough to pay for half a race ready merlin engine , more less anything else . The top unlimited owners told the air race committee for years that the time was coming when they would no longer be able to do this . That`s why you no longer see ANY 500mph unlimiteds flying at Reno any longer and you won`t either . Dreadnaught hadn`t won a race since 1985 , yet they have won it three years in a row at speeds of less than 430 mph . The whole unlimited class has turned into a lousy parade of slow, never was and has been planes and damn few of them to boot . I wouldn`t go to Reno again if they paid my expenses . A small boring parade . That`s all it is . I attended the races from 1982 until 2010 , the year before the crash . I`ve talked to dozens of people I`ve known for decades from the air races who have vowed never to return again . I usually don`t waste my time straightening out someone who doesn`t know their ass from a hole in the ground , but this time I made an exception ,just for you . I`ll bet you`re not a pilot , just another yo-yo who only thinks he knows what he`s talking about .
