Swordfishtrombones was my first exposure to Tom Waits. And I was getting pretty serious with a guy in the Coast Guard (turned out to be a cheating rat, bye! lol) and I was into punk and rockabilly-- and thought the Eagles wrote Old 55 until I did my 1980s research and went to the library, the records stores, the sheet music store...! I'm 60 now and I'm so happy to hear and see you in your old videos. Nostalgia and wistfulness plague me, the good And the bad. Tom's good!🎉 Hold On is a song that helped me get through my late husband's grief cycle--8yrs and I'm still going thru it but Music Saves. I am forever indebted to Tom for these and other tunes with meaning and feeling and streetwise storytelling. It just doesn't get much better than this. ✨️
One of my all-time favorite songs, from my all-time favorite artist. By all-time, I mean those artist you cling onto for your lifetime... the ones you trust writing the soundtrack of your life.
Looking for the heart of Saturday night. Jersey girl. Hope I don't fall in love with you. Downtown train. Hold on....... .. Just an absolute Genius ♥ Long live tom waits.
They hung a sign up in our town "If you live it up, you won't live it down" So she left Monte Rio, son Just like a bullet leaves a gun With her charcoal eyes and Monroe hips She went and took that California trip Oh, the moon was gold, her hair like wind Said, "don't look back, just come on, Jim" Oh, you got to hold on, hold on You gotta hold on Take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on Well, he gave her a dimestore watch And a ring made from a spoon Everyone's looking for someone to blame When you share my bed, you share my name Well, go ahead and call the cops You don't meet nice girls in coffee shops She said, "baby, I still love you" Sometimes there's nothin' left to do Oh, but you got to hold on, hold on Babe, you gotta hold on and take my hand I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on Well, God bless your crooked little heart St. Louis got the best of me I miss your broken China voice How I wish you were still here with me Oh, you build it up, you wreck it down Then you burn your mansion to the ground Oh, there's nothing left to keep you here But when you're falling behind in this big blue world Oh, you've got to hold on, hold on Babe, you gotta hold on Take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on Down by the Riverside motel It's ten below and falling By a ninety-nine cent store She closed her eyes and started swaying But it's so hard to dance that way When it's cold and there's no music Oh, your old hometown's so far away But inside your head there's a record that's playing A song called "Hold On", hold on Babe, you gotta hold on Take my hand, I'm standing right there, you gotta hold on You gotta hold on, hold on Babe, you gotta hold on Take my hand, I'm standing right there, you gotta hold on You gotta hold on, hold on Babe, you gotta hold on And take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on You gotta hold on, hold on Babe, you gotta hold on And take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on You gotta hold on You gotta hold on You gotta hold on You gotta hold on You gotta hold on, baby You gotta hold on, girl You gotta hold on You gotta hold on
My late dear friend Dwight Panton turned me on to Tom Waits. Awesome songwriter and his unique voice comes from the soul and touches the soul. Thank you Mr. Waits, thanks Dwight. RIP
I rarely share Tom's music, let alone my obsessive borderline compulsive love for his music, because people either understand Tom Waits or they don't. And VERY FEW PEOPLE UNDERSTAND HIS GENIUS! It reminds me of a secret that's in plain sight for everyone to see, but very few actually see it. It's the same thing with The Velvet Underground, and maybe a one or two other artists. I remember a so called friend of mine and I were having a conversation shorty after Robin Williams passed away. In that conversation, I mentioned Robin Williams was a die-hard Tom Waits fan. My friend Seth Stenerson said: "Maybe that's the reason why Robin killed himself." What a fucked off thing to say! I quite hanging out with Seth for many reasons. That was the straw that broke the camel's back.
So much emotional stability and inner calm in this one - as life's waves rage below that surface of pain and suffering the poet - the artist - the steady souls sit holding on.
Would like to know if you filmed this in W.Marin back in January. Met you and your wife in PRS. Figured I looked like someone you knew when you walked right up to me sitting there in front of the store. Thank you for the smile! :)
there's no one like tom waits to me, i dont have a list of people i admire. it's only Waits. but i admit this video is so cheesy, i mean those parts with the girl.
I don’t know why anyone as gifted and accomplished as Waits would even bother to make or sign off on the contract to release cliched literal videos like this. Music videos are all about the ego of the producer and editor and really have nothing to do with the musical artist. As such, Waits the musician is so goddamn far above the hacks that put this video together it’s pathetic. No doubt it’s essential in the marketing scheme, but by now I’d think Waits would have had enough and said “Go away kid, you’re bothering me.” Another great song ruined by a video trying to tell it’s story.
Or it could be complementing his song by showing the story he's telling. But you're right, someone as ingenious as Tom Waits would probably sign off on anything they put in his face.

Long live tom waits.
Discovered Tom on Letterman in the late 80s, and he's been along with me for the ride ever since. So glad to have him riding shotgun.
I would drive 11 hours in northwest Ontario from Winnipeg. Work. I know him from albums. Play lots too. What a legend to me, what a legacy!
best of the best
I love, love, love Tom Waits - (I’m 70)!!🥰🥰🥰🥰
They hung a sign up in our town
"If you live it up, you won't live it down"
So she left Monte Rio, son
Just like a bullet leaves a gun
With her charcoal eyes and Monroe hips
She went and took that California trip
Oh, the moon was gold, her hair like wind
Said, "don't look back, just come on, Jim"
Oh, you got to hold on, hold on
You gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on
Well, he gave her a dimestore watch
And a ring made from a spoon
Everyone's looking for someone to blame
When you share my bed, you share my name
Well, go ahead and call the cops
You don't meet nice girls in coffee shops
She said, "baby, I still love you"
Sometimes there's nothin' left to do
Oh, but you got to hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on and take my hand
I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on
Well, God bless your crooked little heart
St. Louis got the best of me
I miss your broken China voice
How I wish you were still here with me
Oh, you build it up, you wreck it down
Then you burn your mansion to the ground
Oh, there's nothing left to keep you here
But when you're falling behind in this big blue world
Oh, you've got to hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on
Down by the Riverside motel
It's ten below and falling
By a ninety-nine cent store
She closed her eyes and started swaying
But it's so hard to dance that way
When it's cold and there's no music
Oh, your old hometown's so far away
But inside your head there's a record that's playing
A song called "Hold On", hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right there, you gotta hold on
You gotta hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right there, you gotta hold on
You gotta hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
And take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on
You gotta hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
And take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on, baby
You gotta hold on, girl
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
The verse about "God bless your crooked little heart" isn't in this version.

Grandios , wer es besser kann werfe den ersten Stein, aber so dumm ist nicht einmal ein Stein der sich für so etwas missbrauchen lässt.
