My wife said if she passed before me she wanted this played at her funeral... and I did. Surprised alot of blue hairs. God bless y'all. I'm going to hold on
My late son introduced me to so much good music including Alabama Shakes and this song. I can’t tell you how many times I asked him after he died why he just couldn’t hold on one more day, one more night, one more minute. I love this song and think about him every time I hear it.
i’m 23 years young and fighting a very aggressive cancer, and this song has filled me with the fight i needed to conquer my battle, thank you Alabama shakes EDIT: thank you all for countless support. i never thought in a million years i’d be where i am now. i am doing better baby steps at a time. thank you to those who reached out to me and those who left words of encouragement. i held on and here i am ❤️

THE best concert I have ever been to was the Alabama Shakes, March 14, 2015 at the Chicago Theatre. Walked up to the window after enjoying St. Patrick's Day weekend, and found 2 tickets, 10 rows back, for $30 each! Regardless of the price, or amazing situation, the show was over-the-moon! One of the best memories of my life!
Perhaps because it reminds us of Bruce Springstein, rock, acid rock, mind music. The good old days of Jimmy Hendrix, Led Zeppelin. Woodstock. She does it well.
I get so tired of people saying there's no good music anymore this is fantastic and there's lots of great music out there if you know where to look for it
So much great music being made everyday. Sometimes it’s hard to find though. Best way I’ve found is listening to pandora and creating a channel on something you love and the related music helps to find real gems
Nah, not gold. More like someone melted down a big chunk of rusty iron and added some honey to it. I mean that all in a good way. Gold is like some pop singer. This chick has some pipes and a roughness to her singing. Been listening to them most of the morning with my 1 year old daughter, dancing and singing along. Hoping I can get her started on the good stuff so she doesn't get into just the pop stuff that her friends are into when she gets older. I was listening to 60's 70's rock and old blues before I was a teenager and never got into most of the contemporary music of my youth. Fortunately I moved before high school and it was cool to like that music at the new school.
Robert M , # C00L COMMENT ! My 26 year old son introduced me to Alabama Shakes and this 61 year old widow is dancing in my bed as I listen to her voice which is a gift from God ! Have a blessed up day today ! " ....Got to hold on !....
I am over 70yo. I am proud to say that when I heard this band back then I was so impressed I bought an outdated CD format recording just to get access to the sound on my old system.
It's so amazing seeing her transformation thus far. She went from this, a shy woman with a great voice and soul, to a beast who isn't afraid to belt her amazing voice out. Go Brittany!
Honestly, the more I listen to this, the more convinced I am that the guitar riff playing during the chorus is my favorite riff of all time. It’s so goddamn beautiful and soulful.
I personally love the feral cat sounds that mince out of the much hated Ms. Joanna Newsom. Also, the female lead of Carolina Chocolate Drops (can't remember her name o- o) has a badass southern singin' voice a lot like Brittany. Good music NEEDS to xome back to the forefront. .... I wish to do inhuman things to radio devices, (depraved, horrible things,) even when I know they don't control the insufferable noise that is deemed popular and diarrhea'd out of their speakers. Sorry F. Mercury All I hear is Radio kaka.
+bieberhole69 lol! Great comment! Kudos! Also kudos on your screen name! Oh and kudos to the actual musicians as well because they are good and this is their video afterall
First time I heard of this group was on SNL. Nothing flashy until they start to play and sing. I was blown away. It was like a throwback to the 60s and 70s where real talent and voice was what mattered. So impressed by this group
I'm listening to them for the first time ever because Dave Grohl recommends them on Hot Ones. Wow. I'm in tears. Alabama Shakes, you have shaken me to the core. Thank you
I fell in love with this song when I was just coming back to life after many years in addiction. I held on and never looked back. What an awesome song ❤

It's been 30 days since I was told I have cancer. It's taken this long to get a second opinion and my port in. In two days I start dose dense chemotherapy. I will be honored to listen to this song during the next six or seven months of my treatments. I thank Alabama Shakes for sending me this message. P.S. It doesn't hurt that I'm an Alabama girl! P.P.S. Here's my update. I've held on! Still around, had a recurrence, post traumatic GROWTH (how bout that!?!?). On immunotherapy and doing well. Love to all of you who sent me love and prayers and good vibes. I had no idea so many of you reached out until today, my 3 year anniversary). Wish I could reply individually to you. Make your day great! Julie Kay from Alabama
Good luck, friend. I'm battling cancer myself at the moment. It took me about a month to start treatments as well just because of port and had to get kidney stents put in. It's a rough road. The radiation is what really kicked my ass. Hang in there .
I am going through cancer with my mom. I know how it feels but you are not alone. You have made a statement about how good your taste is and made it to the people who feel you. I am with you and I am sure the rest here are as well. Good luck and the positive attitude is what gets you through.
Wishing you all positive thoughts to get through it the shit. Lost both parents to malignant melanoma & 2 best friends to cancer. Personally fight skin cancer 3 surgeries in past 4 months & 2 rounds of chemo. Have biopsies every 3 months. Gotta keep fighting. Courage & bravery comes from inner strength you can't believe you even have. Fight on because there's no decent alternative! ❤💪😊

Dear Alabama Shakes,I am participating in the Out of the Darkness Walks this morning in Maryland, in my brother's memory, Joey Blanton-Harris, who died by suicide. He was a phenomenal musician and human being. I have been an emotional mess all night, and needed a song to warm my heart and get me going. I simply googled "hold on", as it was the theme I felt the walk represents. Your song was on the list, and was the first one I clicked on. Was I glad I found it! Thank you! I am ready for my mission today. YOU ROCK! God bless you real good. ~Carol Borrelli
pebblescb Much love and strength to you. I lost my brother to suicide when I was thirteen. I'm 26 now, which was his age at the time. I've considered doing the same many times but the thought of putting my parents through the loss of a second son has kept me alive.
I heard this on Rage TV at about 6-7 am at the end of a huge night of partying, you know when you're feeling all the effects at once and you're emotionally fragile like you can't believe... I could tell by the drums and the intro that it was going to be something special, but I wasn't prepared for how utterly spellbound I was by the raw emotion of her voice and the quality of the musicians in the band. It was one of the few songs ever that genuinely blew my mind the first time I heard it. It left me speechless with my jaw on the floor. AMAZING.
This song has gotten me through so serious crap in my life. I love this band and their sound. Her voice and lyrics are just amazing. Thank you for saving my life. Seriously.
This song, these words, now more than ever, mean EVERYTHING!!! I literally play it every day, several times, just to mentally get myself to try and fight! What some humans do to each other, or hold back from others, is cruel and evil. So thank goodness for your songs and music!!!!
This song brings tears to my eyes every time..whether it be happy tears or sad tears. I've battled addiction for years and am finally clean and getting myself back up and holding on.. Plus my name is Brittany and my dad calls me baby girl...what a small, beautiful world we live in
I was channel surfing years ago and spotted/heard the Shakes on a Saturday Night Live. A show I hadn't watched in years. Her voice captured my interest, and I started watching SNL again every week to insure I would catch the new bands!
SAME! How am I just now listening to this song in 2023? Sittin here crying my eyes out reading these comments. Much love to every single one of you fighting a battle whether it be cancer, addiction, or anything that might be stealing your joy! To Brittany and her band keep on keepin on PLEASE! ❤❤❤
It doesn't matter how many times ive heard this song over the years. It instantly gives me chills & makes me want to cry because Brittany Howard has always been beyond her years. She is unreal.
Kick ass band. The vocals are mesmerizing. The band is tight. They are a throwback to the days when music punched you right in the gut and made you listen!
Completely understand no hard feeling nothing personal we all good. Kindness please this jams hella best best needed to be heard on the daily I think anyone else?😊
My Mama speaks to me through this song...... She introduced me to you, and since her death this song keeps coming into my life... I'm holding on!!! Come on Karly, you got to get back up.. Holding on!! ❤️❤️❤️💯💯💪🏼
God ❤ loves you Karly. Keep the Faith! God Almighty is awesome. He'll NEVER forsake you RATHER we tend to forsake him. Your Mom is your guardian angel 😇 Stay safe sweetie ❤
I was hooked the first time I heard this song. I love everything about this song. It gives me hope and faith. This song is in my top 5. Music and lyric.
I'm from Boston, Massachusetts and I remember hearing this for the first time on WAAF while at work and immediately got the chills and fell in love with the lyrics and emotion in her voice and the whole band's delivery of this song!!! Absolutely amazing!!!!! Thank you Alabama Shakes for such a beautiful, truthful and inspiring song!!!
I'm from Boston too and I grew up with WAAF and WBCN. So many great memories of listening to the radio in the car or at home in my room. I was so sad when WBCN closed them mad when WAAF closed too.
I just heard it for the first time today and wow I'm very impressed with this band. Cant wait to see them at Bonnaroo this year. June cant come fast enough.
As someone named Brittany who was in and out of foster care as a kid with super abusive parents. This song meant everything to me growing up. Thank you.
Yeah, I saw this band at Red Rocks and Brittany had a gorgeous white dress that was blowing in the wind. What a lovely evening! Thanks to everyone involved with that production!❤️
I heard this song when I was like 13 for the first time and it caught me off guard. The older I get the more I fall in love with this song. So powerful and so much soul.
I'm almost 70 now, and a fan of the 70's music ... no pun intended. This is my kind of music. I heard this song, or parts of it in the movie "Dog" tonight. Just wow, what a voice, melody, guitar playing and song!!! I'd never heard of Brittany Howard or the Alabama Shakes. (guess I need to keep up more lol) But, I'm a big fan of both now, and look forward to listening to more of their music.
Been listening to this for a while, saw the video a few months ago. Can't believe how hard this chick rocks! Now that's feeling! Absolutely love it! Thumbs way up.
That's pure soul oozing out of this womans amazingly powerful voice and the drive of the beat reaches deep, deep down inside my gut! This was my late wifes favorite song while she was ill.
Back playing my playlist. This number grabbed my attention when released. That driving chug of a rhythm, the slow crescendo, the kbd pushing with simple chords, the lead guitar is tasty, the bass is just driving it along, and then there's Brittney, holding it all together. Still awesome to me after a decade.
Really ruff time back in 2010, use to cry driving on the way to work while singing/screaming this song holding onto the future and steering wheel for dear life. Great performance, great song. Thank you for helping me have hope during that time.
Fight MVP and an electrical issue in my heart. I’ve heard off hoping for avoiding a pacemaker, but at the point of signed up for a sinus node ablation. 31 year old female. Overcame foster care, built for years for a career and I’m afraid I’m going to lose everything I have worked for. I feel along and I hope I have peace making the decisions I need to. I pray all my friends know how much I want for them and the love I have in my heart. All I care about is that my friends have wonderful lives. I feel sad, but I hope I made a few people’s lives better. Thank you for this amazing song. I’m holding on for all my people.
Can’t believe how much I still love this song and how strong the feeling it gives me still is after 15+ years. Incredible that someone so young could create something so beautiful, top to bottom.
This song I just can't stop playing on repeat. Amazingly talented. Heard it on movie The Dog. And searched. Now looking up some of there different songs. Simply awesome. Thank you.
I heard it years and years ago and was just now watching the movie The Dog and thought, holy crap!! How could I have forgotten about this song??? Now I've been listening to it on repeat... I have NEVER posted personal stuff about my life, but in the last 18 days, I've lost my job, my relationship and my apartment, health insurance and medications at the end of this month and I'm 55 yrs old. This song...has given me some hope to cling to at the single worst time of my life. 🙏🏼 for me. And, thank you Brittany and the Alabama Shakes.❤
Its interesting with music, for 12 years this tune never entered my life. Today On day 197 of sobriety it did... subscriber sent it to me. Perfect damn timing! Thank you MamaD and Alabama Shakes! I will hold on! 💪🏾🔥

What band is she with now? Is she fronting with just her name?
Great line 'Took my soul for a ride'!
Right on 🙌🏼
That soul. Those pipes. 100% feeling. This is music. Guitars, drums, and bass are dope as well. Damn good band.
O.M.G...real musicians performing real music! This is what makes me go out and spend money to actually own the CD.
This song has me fighting back the tears. This resonates with me on every level.
Been looking for this long for 11 years and could not find it!! Finally found a list of my favorite songs back then! Thank God!!
That’s really cool ❤😊
When the words hit you and help you deal with life in the moment. 12 years , and first time hearing this. I needed this.. thank you
💯👊
This hit me today, right when it needed to .
I also found it at the exact time that I needed it ❤️
I must have been living under a rock to have let this one slide under my radar. Absolutely love this!
I'm 77, so why do I think this is worthwhile? Because it is brilliant.
Because we remember music.
Perhaps because it reminds us of Bruce Springstein, rock, acid rock, mind music. The good old days of Jimmy Hendrix, Led Zeppelin. Woodstock. She does it well.
I'm 66 and I agree.
Hope you’re still doin well!
@@kiwis.4228 Thank you so much for asking. I'm fine. I hope that you and those close to you are well and continuing to enjoy real music.

Groovy Guru AL Shakes so under the radar. .yet they've won at least one ..gramny was it??

You know a band is good when they use the live version as their music video!
True dat
And you know a band is good when they make such a good song like this with only one chord though out the whole song

I was channel surfing years ago and spotted/heard the Shakes on a Saturday Night Live. A show I hadn't watched in years. Her voice captured my interest, and I started watching SNL again every week to insure I would catch the new bands!
@@jamescrawford2341 That was their big entrance I feel in mainstream..That performance was ammmmmazing

Kick ass band. The vocals are mesmerizing. The band is tight. They are a throwback to the days when music punched you right in the gut and made you listen!
Damn right!
Yea, that lead guitar and the bass and organ etc.... well the whole dang band is really very good!!
Yes! And that illustrates the difference between a real band and one where a bunch of different musicians back up a front person. This is a real band!
That's a good way to put it :)

I struggle everyday this song gives me a reason to HOLD ON! You're not alone.
You know this band is authentic as heck when they have their music video be them playing the song live 😩😍
This tune is the positivity I need daily
This song got me through 3 back surgeries and then detoxing in 2020 after 8 years of addiction to opiates. Much appreciated my friends

Agreed. Brittany is electric and so captivating on stage. You will not be disappointed! Bonnaroo is going to be great.
Man these are some freaking talented musicians. What a great band.

It caught me around 2015 keep going back great sounds.
Thanks Brittany & Bama Shakes. Good lesson in self love and faith in the process of life as it unfolds.Y'all rock!
What a voice!
Been listening to this for a while, saw the video a few months ago. Can't believe how hard this chick rocks! Now that's feeling! Absolutely love it! Thumbs way up.
I am in love with Alabama Shakes! I can't get enough of this band!
I LOVE HER TOO....HOLD ON..
That's pure soul oozing out of this womans amazingly powerful voice and the drive of the beat reaches deep, deep down inside my gut!
This was my late wifes favorite song while she was ill.
This woman's voice in incomparable and impeccable. When I feel down this song lifts me up.
her voice is so powerful I love this song

Shannon Hill Amen
lone wolf yes she did
Hmmmm. Something to watch out for...pure talent, raw and unforgettable music...kind of music not so common nowadays...GREAT!!!!!
Raw music is the best!!
Same!
I'm so glad she decided to turn her story into this song-- hitting hard!! talent!!

Absolutely the most incredible song I have ever listened to. The woman is a magician!
