I have naturally dark brown hair with a few salt and pepper grey roots coming in. I've been coloring my hair for many years a slightly lighter milk chocolate brown color. During quarantine the top layer of my hair has faded to a brassy/orange/peachy color. I want to grow out all of the color and let my greys come in. Will the Dark Envy work to tone the orange color while I wait for the color treated hair to grow out? I hope that made sense. :) Thanks for any info you can give me.

Replying may seem a little silly given how long ago you posted this (almost a year ago!), but I might be able to help out if this is still something you're wondering about. Just a disclaimer though: I'm not a hair stylist or colourist, so I'm only going off my research and my own discussions with my hair stylist. I also haven't used any of the products I mention, so I'm only going off research and not expertise or personal experience. The purpose behind toning shampoos and hair masks (which is what the Matrix Dark Envy line is) is to neutralize an unwanted colour in natural or coloured hair. The way to do that is by applying a colour that's on the opposite end of the colour wheel to the one you want to remove. The Dark Envy shampoo and hair mask are the colour-depositing products in the line (i.e., the ones that'll actually tone your hair); the conditioner is just a conditioner and doesn't have any toning capabilities (it's non-colour depositing). The shampoo contains blue-yellow direct dyes and the hair mask contains blue-green direct dyes (direct dyes meaning the colour just deposits on top of the hair shaft, unlike permanent dyes which use chemicals to deposit the colour into the hair shaft itself). The reason why Dark Envy is green is because it's meant for neutralizing the red undertones that occur in dark brown and black hair (on the colour wheel, green is opposite to red). If you're experiencing brassy/orange undertones in your lighter brown hair, you'd want to use a blue shampoo (because blue is opposite orange on the colour wheel). Matrix has their Brass Off line for darker blondes and lighter brunettes for this purpose (blue-violet direct dyes in the shampoo). However, based on some comments I've seen, Fanola's No Orange may do a better job. Dark Envy is meant for *dark* brown and black to get rid of red undertones; it won't translate well to lighter shades without a red undertone.
The thing that's concerning to me about your case is that you're letting your grey roots come in. If you apply any of these shampoos or hair masks to your grey, it'll dye it the colour of the product you're using, so you'd want to be areful about where you actually apply the product. In this case, a toning hair mask might be a better option than a toning shampoo as you'll likely have more control over where the product goes. Given almost a year has passed since this comment, you've likely already grown out your hair to be fully naturally grey. If you're experiencing unwanted brassy warmth due to yellow undertones in your grey, using a purple shampoo will help reduce the yellow. Matrix also has a So Silver line for this purpose, but I'm not sure how it compares to other purple shampoos on the market.
Anyways, hope that helps even a little bit; though, I know you've been waiting for a response for a while, so your question may no longer be applicable. I just found this video today and figured I could share some knowledge. Bottom line, the thing to remember about toning shampoos and hair masks is that they're depositing colour that's on the opposite end of the colour wheel to the tone you want to remove.

@@kayzmavc4596 As you stated, nearly a year has passed since my original comment and yes, most of my previously colored hair has grown out and has been cut off. My natural hair color is a very dark brown with just a few grays here and there. During the past year I've used both blue and purple shampoos/conditioners to tone down the lighter peach/orange tones that were the result of fading. I'm aware that these products only coat the hair temporarily and no, they don't color the gray hairs blue or purple. In fact, they brighten them to a lovely silver shade which is why they are so popular. At worst it stains fingernails but is easily washed off with soap and water.

@@helpfulnatural I'm glad you found something that works for you! But yes, blue and/or purple shampoos were definitely the right choice for the tones you wanted to get rid of! And the purple would definitely help with toning the greys, as you've experienced. It's so great when we find something that works for us and gives us the result we're looking for!

Ok I just bought dark envy today left it in my hair for 5 minutes it didn't do anything. I have dark auburn hair. I was hoping to have it darken with no red tones with dark envy but it didn't work. How often should I use the shampoo and conditioner in a week? Next time I will try to leave in for 10 minutes see if it does anything.

I have the exact same question as helfulnatural. And wonder if this will tint my little bits of silver / white to a green color? Thank you!
