Gosh I am so sorry that everything turned out this way. Morely seemed genuinely happy about the chair and a lot of the grief of the project itself, such as assembly, was his fault. He even said it was his fault. You don't deserve this hate, the video was legitimately harmless.

I watch Morley and Slant and I think it was pretty clear what happened. I didn't see it as "Slant screwed him" .. the real problem is that when almost a million people watch a video, 1 or 2 percent of those people are idiots, and that's still more idiots than you'd like.

I watched it too, and I agree that I didn't get the feel that there was any blame placed on Slant 3D. He DID mention that shipping was expensive, and that he wanted red filament that you didn't produce. I also got the feeling that he acknowledged that it was a rush job....extremely rushed, and that you were helping him when you KNEW you couldn't offer the 'full experience'. I can understand that Slant 3D might feel a need to make excuses for some of their customers, but it was unnecessary imho (and maybe did more damage with me than help).
If you're afraid of damaging your brand, then splinter off a 'charity' brand that can safely still have fun, do favours, and insulate the corporate side of business from makers and hobbyists who make up the bulk of your audience on RUclips. I strongly doubt that large corporates are watching this podcast to check out your engineering credentials.
i.e. I think you're overreacting. Own the jank. If you feel like you have pie on your face, and want to show your REAL engineering chops, then do something crazy cool and flick it to him to show off a bit, imho. Otherwise, move on....I don't think it was as much drama as this video makes it out to be.

I'm not one of the people that saw the Morely issue as anyone's fault really. just an accident which happens. However it gives an opportunity to win back the people that did see it as a negative. The opportunity is to make a new project with Morely where Slant redesigns the chair without time constraints and full procedure and helps him get something perfect. Maybe even like the idea you said to do a unique design to same style of chair even if it doesn't match the original chair as closely. But that gives Morely another video to talk positively and show a better product showing just what you guys are capable of when things are not rushed. Its the kind of Comeback video that people on youtube really love and it will instantly change the minds of anyone that originally had a negative outlook with the first video

Probably nobody would have watched or found it interesting if the video was filled with lots of serious people with clipboards, micrometers, design reviews, pre-production meetings, ... Having now read some of the comments I can see where your reaction is coming from and your shutting down similar future things is understandable, but it's a shame.

I saw the Morley video and there was never from Morley's point of view any ill feelings and he even iterates as much in the video himself and he also explained about the versions in design that got mixed. Morley's frustrations was more with himself as if you watch the video he was not properly setup and prepared to assemble the chair. he then went into panic mode of getting it to work out using some epoxy glue that did not set properly as he thought it would then jumping onto a superglue to temporarily hold the pieces together so the epoxy glue could set even trying to strap it down. the epoxy even took a couple of days to really cure and bond. In the end the chair was working just fine and he NEVER had anything bad to say about SLANT 3D. I feel like the top comments of that video probably don't have the full context, but I do think Slant3d has to own up to the fact that a mistake was made, which is that the wrong parts were sent. While this may not happen during a normal customer run, it is an issue caused by Slant3d during the engineering stage, so I would suggest doing more collabs, but putting more resources, time, and attention into making sure the collab doesn't have any slip ups. This is just the way marketing is.

    • @geordonworley5618
      @geordonworley5618 Месяц назад +4

@@zenginellc Well, I just mean that the chair was assembled from multiple parts, including the core, which didn't line up. Yes, if you consider the chair itself to be the part then it is a single part, but my understanding from watching this video is that some of the parts were printed from one CAD model version and others from another by accident. This caused the core (watch the video of him putting it together) to have several parts that wouldn't fit together. It could be fixed with an additional part as stated in this video, but obviously the best solution is to have everything be correct the first time, particularly in a marketing situation. If you get marketing wrong the first time, most people will not look again. A book IS judged by its cover. Alternatively, a contract can be made ensuring a video isn't published until after the engineering stage is completed. I think adding such things is more than reasonable in such a situation to prevent someone from rushing a video out.

Its the age old problem of quality, speed, and cost; you can only chose two, and sometimes only one. In this case, speed and cost were chosen, so quality suffered a little bit. That's just what happens. Surely if there was more time, quality could have been achieved. All aside, this is an alright way to handle things I think.

Quote is a straight forward number and timeline set - "Pay this number and I can have this product to you at this date." whether that costs more or less to accomplish doesn't matter.

  • @Steaky78
    @Steaky78 Месяц назад +19

The answer to this in my mind is very simple. You produce a follow-up video with Morley where he gets chance to explain some of the nuances and shortcomings of the original project and you get chance to explain the design elements and how it needs to be designed better, but the time constraints didn’t allow it.
Then you produce that chair with no time pressure whatsoever; your filament, on-budget while using the manufacturing techniques you described, making the chair more structurally sound and more economical in both filament and structural integrity of the design.
That way you guys both win and I would say don’t put any kind of time pressure on this - just treat this as a bit of a side project; if it takes six months it takes six months but ultimately you guys carry on running your business and on the side do the job properly, the way it should have always been done.
I like Morley but he definitely needs to put something out there for the idiots that don’t get that some of the problems that are occurred on nothing to do with slant 3-D. It was a decision taken due to the time constraints of the project and that showed in the video.

I watched the Morley video a few days ago and i mean while it's not an ideal showing for your company, given you did mess up a good chunk of the print, i was 100% under the impression that things were super cordial between you both. Sometimes things work out a little differently than expected, things get rushed, mistakes happen, we all know that, i mean he hasn't handled his part perfectly either, and he's under pressure to release a video on a deadline, normally a complex task like that needs a little time to breathe. The thought that you weren't good to him never crossed my mind.

I watched both videos, I didn't get from Morley's video that Slant messed up or that he thought that.
But lots of people don't know how rapid projects go but will comment on it, this is why we can't have nice things. One of the steps Morley could have taken to mitigate risk would have been to scale down the parts to a model size and print on his printer, and then come up with an assembly plan. But, when you are doing something in a hurry you don't always have time for that.

What a dilemma. I hope this doesn't put you off doing more collabs as you guys are basically the holy grail for anyone wanting to do a 3DP collab given your knowledge and resources. One thing I can say from a realistic perspective is that nothing drives traffic like drama, so even if there had been beef between you guys, it probably would have had a huge net positive effect on your business.
To me it's a little bit ironic that (I assume) a small percentage of your audience are actually in need of industrial 3D printing services because most of us have our own printers, or run our own farms. Plus it's not a product like toilet paper that everyone needs. I think doing more collabs will open your channel up to a more mainstream audience that wants stuff made but might not know how to print it. Aside from collabs, you should use your knowledge and resources to do some crazy shizz that nobody else can do.

Regrading collaborations, please don't just shy away. The ability of Slant 3d and Gabe to be so transparent as to what occurred (even though it's not a big deal) helps with context and will build respect.
Think the lesson learned is too many constraints on a project can be major pain, particularly if doing a new type of project Pain for either for the customer, the service provider, or both. When doing new projects, limiting the number of new constraints per integration can help derisk the project. Adding a time constraint to an already risky project only serves to summon Murphy's Law.
The story of Morley printing Eden's idea for a chair reminds me of the drama on a big budget reality show. It's highly entertaining this was well done (intentionally, or not).
It would be interesting to look at aspects of the splitting of the chair design to show how it could be improved on. This should included designing for ease of customer assembly. Given the IP concerns, a smaller cylindrical project like a lamp base or utensil holder could serve as basis for a series of design videos. Just pretend the project is going to be an oversized print needing segmentation, with example printed at scale for verification.
BTW: A video that will soon have over a million views is going to have some nasty troll comments. It's the nature of an uncensored public internet.

@@McRootbeer I mean this chair definitely cannot be sold as a puzzle or toy, even Morley's use of design was a little on the edge as far as potential legality of it. You're going to have to negotiate with the company that makes it and actually license it.

That's crazy!! I watched that video a week ago and I didn't think slant looked bad at all. I had the impression wow a few e-mails and you had a chair printed for you? I happen to be subscribed to both and enjoy both of their content. So maybe I had rose colored glasses, but I certain didn't leave that video thinking oh slant 3d sucks or screwed him. I thought wow that's awesome they took on such a challenge. Maybe because I have a printer and I wouldn't touch that with a ten foot pole, or maybe because I Knew no one in their right mind would print something that big on standard 3d printers. So I thought it was more proof of concept, look it can be done not, this is how you make a chair. Maybe my limited experience and knowledge, but I was quite impressed with the undertaking.

How is your transition to spool-less will affect your goals for lowering filament price? Initially you were targeting 10$, but as I understand with spools. Since spools cost money, going spool-less basically makes your product itself cheaper, but now it is a different product than all the competitors provide (filamnt on spool vs spool-less filament). I appreciate this decision as it is going to reduce waste eventually, but now it would be hard to compare tangled filament prices to other brands, as there will be an X$ difference just because of not having spools.

I'll be blunt both channels aren't really to blame. You guys should have just went thru your rolodex of contacts you have done work with who could handle a print that size. A single printed chair would have been a much better outcome for both parties involved. It would likely have been much more costly in the end but you're making life rough for yourself trying to piece together a print that involves that much stress. Not a bad outcome just it leaves a little desire to seeing it done right for the viewers.

I watched Morley's video and it came across as him being rushed and not planning things properly, from design to assembly. I enjoyed the chaos, but it also shows the difference between a 1-off project and something that is carefully engineered to be printed many thousands of times. A good followup would be to have a video around exactly that. What would you do if you expected to make this for real. One thing that struck me is why was there no test fit at a reduced scale? Would you not want to print a 1:10 model or something like that before committing to full size? One more thing, your solution for running the spools outside the AMS works for the AMS-Lite used by the A1 and A1 mini, I have been doing that for a while. However, it appears the more sophisticated AMS used by the X1C and P-series has some starts that detect the lack of respooling.

The fact that there is no bad blood between you two should be enough for the audience to not blow this out of proportion into some drama. You both agreed to participate in the project and shared costs and that's that.
The reason for this situation is very poor communication about the project in Morley's video. The main issue is the lack of information about how the cost was divided, how much labor cost went into the project from Slant's side, that Morley agreed to increase the cost of the chair because he wanted a specific color that was not readily available.
If the video showed all of these collaborative aspects around the project it would feel like two creative people doing something original where both expect to make mistakes and break things. However the video felt more like a person doing a project aided by a company. This makes it feel like a customer and a company relationship than two enthusiast relationship. This in turn makes the viewer disregard most of the mistakes made by Morley and emphasize all mistakes on Slant's side.
Slant should have decided if this is a two youtuber collab or a youtuber + company collab. In the first case you should have made this video together from start to finish - two guys doing a thing. In the second case Slant should treat this collab as a sponsorship and a PR stunt where everything should be crystal clear, perfect, treated like a production project and there should be no invoicing.
I hope you will both learn from this experience and make great collabs in the future.

Nevertheless, I find kind of upsetting that Morley didn't do a dry fit of the "puzzle" before the real assembly. Just thrusting through inconveniences like that end up hurting.
It still was a cool project, from everyone involved! That kind of development could end up in real products and showcase the capabilities of 3d production.

You just need to outlast them .... let the bills build up on LP's end .....crazy as it sounds, dragging it out longer is what will actually resolve it. It's so cut and dry you could get a team of eager beaver law students to pro-bono this as a school project. Imagine an entire college class running up the billable hours for LP's firm .....ultimately hurting him and them ....unfortunately that will drain funds for refunding victims .... maybe that is their real strategy ...."poor me ...I'd really like to help people out ....but I am out of money" .... 5 will get you 10 physical assets are being bought and ferreted away in hidey holes like Bankman Freid did.

I like grey for when I’m printing models. It’s easier to see faults with the print that need to be filled

As for the plastic ones not working in the AMS, they work fine with the Hydra Pro mod, but your suggestion to hang a spool above will unfortunately not work, since the machine specifically senses for pull-back that it does with the motor in the AMS.

I don't think you necessarily have to stop doing collars- something just happened to go wrong here. In the future if you underpromise on the timeline and ensure your collaborators know their project will not be a priority, and as a result will have a longer turnaround, then you'll have time to address any issues that come up.
And for what it's worth, nobody with a good head on their shoulders came out of that video thinking Slant 3D screwed Morley over. Sometimes things just don't go according to plan

Hanging above the Bambu Lab AMS will work for printing, but won't work for colour changing as it won't respool. There are rollers that move inside the AMS to respool the filament properly when retracted. Without that, it will just spit it out everywhere.

Tbh, I am stunned that anyone could say it was Slant3D's fault when Morely owned up in the comments that there was miscommunication and that both of you are saying this was a "rushed" project. Everything falls back on Morely actually being at fault and struggling because of himself. I don't think youtubers and influencers should be allowed to just put timing pressure on businesses like this without expecting the business to charge more for it and for the quality. It seems to me that the whole point of the Morely video was "teehee, I custom 3D printed this chair and it was sooo much less money than the MSRP of the real version!" U don't like that attitude when, just like what was said here, if it was anyone else, a project like this would cost a couple grand. Availability of these massive printers is limited and expensive. You are morally correct to avoid projects like this in the future because a lot of businesses would've said "nope, we are not rushing this because we care about the quality of the product we're giving you. You can wait longer or you can help pay more so we can prioritize your project."

His problems ware byproduct of what he get. They sliced it in a way that is hard to assembly, and they don't consult that with him. If you making custom product you can't just make as little as possible and blame the customer for having problems with it. On top of that they made mistake, they knew about it, but didn't inform. Even if they had no time to reprint, they should at least put a note.
In the end he paid much more than expected, it cost him much more time and work than expected, he was frustrated and almost trashed it and end up with big, red garbage. It might be fun and maybe even survive more than one day to shoot a video, but it's a plastic garbage for $550.

I dont agree with your conclusion with the chair situation... what you faced is what EVERY designer and engineer on every field faced at least once on his life... DONT start producing anything if the project is not finished, its murphys law, something WILL go wrong and you already produced that single piece that cannot be recovered or modified...
My suggestions, DONT rush on 3D printed projects, it always backfires,
Dont give a chance to murphys law,
And a less common advice, 99% of the time, the client is ok with a delay of a few days if you are really working on it and communicate well.
EVERY SINGLE time i ask my client that wants something very fast, they choose to a delay on the delivery instead of less quality...
    .
This is a case of measure once, print twice, combined with murphys law.
I think you should make more colabs, not less, people will talk shit about you no matter what, the best way to gain internet karma, is owning your mistakes and push forward, you will gain followers AND respect, because everyone knows that is easy to hide the mistakes, specially on youtube.

It's about the "journey to build the chair" which means wringing out every emotion possible and making that honest mistake into a HUGE DEAL for the sake of storytelling. Through his edit you were allowed to tell your side of it but some of the viewers got caught up in it. Next, this was the first collab where I heard money mentioned. I often wonder how YT collabs split the expenses but they don't talk about it openly and apparently for good reason! If you do another collab like this, take public discussions of money off the table. Yes there's value to you in mentioning potential savings but each story has its context and nuance which the Internet doesn't do well with.

The real people that are hurt here are the enthusiast community that have no other option. If any company were to buy them out I would have hoped for Prusa to do it. If anything I feel like form labs doesn't want a cheaper than 15k sls device infiltrating the professional space they live in, so this was one of those "silence our competitors before they can compete" type of acquisition.

You can not use spools in the ams without physically placing them inside. There are motors that pull the filament back onto the spool and the rollers are motorized. When the AMS winds back the spool and takes too long it will halt and report an error, because it can't do it's job. It will also not be possible to change colors or material like that.
