The names of Bob’s friends (mostly nicknames) really ARE as he says. Similarly, Caramel and Woffle were indeed actual newspaper reporters! I recall laughing at Ron Waffle’s by-lines when I was a kid.
Okay but I’m not okay with the comment “you know I don’t love Lee Mack” 😤 Lee must be protected at all costs. I’m not having it
Oh I am 100% with you.. I almost threw Blake off the show then and there for such blasphemy.
The surname Bytheway is genuine. Surnames often used to denote professions. For example: Travers is a surname that comes from the old Anglo-Norman English ‘Traverser’ ,meaning ‘to cross’ and was commonly given to people whose job it was to collect tolls from travellers crossing toll gates. Bytheway was also commonly given to people who collected tolls because they did so from a small house by the wayside.
Thanks for the insights Cymru! Always love finding out a bit of new history! I'm surprised I've never come across a Bytheway here in Australia.. :D
@@filmslate > I'm surprised I've never come across a Bytheway here in Australia
A bit unlikely to have tolls on a whole new continent :P
I looked on Facebook.Theres a Steve Bytheway Middlesbrough.
The Gulf Stream is the reason Britain's much warmer than other places at the same latitude like Newfoundland. It's a flow of water that starts in the Caribbean and warms much of the northeast Atlantic. And you need to see more Lee Mack. He's very quickwitted and is hilarious. And NEVER ask Bob Mortimer for the names of any characters :) Have you checked out Kevin Bridges story about buying a horse? One of the funniest ever clips from the show.
Thanks for the insights James! Oh for sure we'll be checking out some more Lee Mack clips in the near future, I think we have the Royal Wedding and Cracked Pot clips to check out next!
Haha yep, I've learnt my lesson, never question Bob or his friends names.. they always end up being true haha.
Yes! Kevin Bridges horse story was one of our first introductions to reaction to this show, we posted that video a couple weeks ago. I'd be keen to check out some more of this stories, it was gold!
Happy New Year mate!
The episode where kevin bridge´s horse story is-it´s worth seeing all of it. Some lovely stories end up being forgotten, there´s Keeley Hawas and Brian Cox and Stephen Mangan and it´s overall brilliant.
Another great episode is the one with Martin Clunes and Richard E. Grant.
@@caroline4323 Thanks for the suggestion Caroline, always love hearing new names of people to check out on WILTY.. I'll pop these guys on the list for sure to check out. Cheers!
@@jamesdignanmusic2765 Thanks as always James, I'll pop these on the list too :)
Bytheway IS a real surname, incidentally. It's a medieval name for someone who lives next to a road.
For some reason I believe you
@@jackmehoffe9372 The name is much older than the expression that means incidentally
@@jackcarter5101 go on wise sage
Oh wow there you go! I've had quite a few people tell me today that the name is real, I'm surprised I haven't come across a Bytheway here in Australia!
How can anybody not love Lee Mack? He's wit is unrivaled.
A suggestion for you. Lee Mack's mug. Bob joins in and they make a great double act.
Oh great! Thanks Lynne that sounds great. I'll pop it on the list to check out, much appreciated!
Although you cant see the Gulf Stream, you can see the effects on it as Bob says. I used to work the west coast of Scotland and you can see the effects from one bay to the next.
Wow that's awesome, thanks for the info Benny :D
There are surprisingly quite a few people called Steve Bytheway. The Gulf Stream keeps UK much warmer than many Northern countries so the west coast of Scotland is unusual for having palms and tropical plants
Love it hilarious Bob Mortimer is a legend this has made me howl 😂 thank you so much guys
Lee Mack is great!!!! Also, there is a great Alex Horne story (where he wears a dinosaur jumper) and one with mel giedroyc "Snog story" that are absolutely fantastic. Also Rhod Gilbert has sooo many great stories on wilty... look for Tapas, escalator, mistake in France, freak, answer the telephone, badmington....
Love all the suggestions Pfisterer! I've put them all on the list to check out! We just filmed our first Rhod Gilbert video "tapas" yesterday, it was hilarious, I'll have it edited and uploaded soon :) Cheers!
its ok "lee mack vs the mitchells" swung him round!
David Mitchell's cowbow boots
Bytheway is a real name in the Uk
Nah, ridiculous totally made-up!!
And Gotobed...so many odd but fab names here.
This is amazing to hear! Is it a common name? I'm surprised I haven't come across a Bytheway here in Australia! Or a Gotobed! :D
@@filmslate Bytheway isn't a common name. Apparently it means 'near the road' as in Steve (who lives) by the way. Don't know about Gotobed though. A lot of old surnames, road names and place names were descriptive and seem strange by modern standards.
Common in our street!
And well known, like Cheeseman and Waffle, th anks to our Bob
Oi, you two!
What's 'dumb' about us Bytheways??
My brother-in-law's a police sergeant , but sadly my sister's husband so without our proud historical surname
Hahaha that is amazing! I've never met a Bytheway before! It honestly sounded even more made up than Harry Harriman (expecting him to pop up in the comments now too :D) I had no idea hahaha.
He 100% should have taken her name..
William Incidentally
@@Lnch4ALion Haha touche Levitzke!
I worked at a garage for Tom Bytheway
Haha really? I have learnt from this video that Bytheway is waaay more common than we had thought! :D
I’ve known at least three people with the surname Bytheway. But everyone always thinks it’s a nonsense name. 😬
Haha there are a few here in the comments section too! Do they pronounce it Bythe-way though, or By-the-way?
Thanks for the message :)
@@filmslate pronounced how Bob says it in my experience. Years ago I played for a football team, but wasn’t registered, so was on the team sheet as Steve Bytheway, who was a bloke from the pub they registered for such situations.
@@Archipelington I can't believe I haven't met a single Bytheway when it sounds so common in the UK haha.
Drats, the comments have already told you Bob used to be a Solicitor 😄 He refers to it during a particular story on WILTY. I'll say no more :) My family and former neighbours remember Bob and Lee Mack living in the East Dulwich area of London in the late 80s and 90s, so they are defo friends. And I can vouch for some things they weave into both their truths and lies having lived there.
Two recommendations:
James Acaster - Christmas present
Lee Mack - Trampoline (to either convert or annoy Blake 😂)
Haha yeah Errol I can't believe that Bob was a solicitor! He does come across as intelligent, just a goofball as well haha. Wow so your family lived in the same neighbourhood as both Bob and Lee? That's awesome! I can imagine at least Bob being a fun neighbour :D
Owwww you may be in luck mate! We just filmed James' "spice-y" Christmas present lol, and I'll have it editing and uploaded in the coming days. We also just shot a Claudia Winkleman clip! Very happy to start on her videos!
Haha the trampoline one sounds great.. we need to convert Blake on Lee Mack! I almost kicked him off the show then and there for claiming he didn't like Lee!
Thanks for the suggestions :D
My mum still lives there. And funny enough I just remembered that another comedian named Micky Flanagan also lived in the area in more recent years and has also been on WILTY. Excellent news to hear you've filmed the Acaster spice-y Christmas 🙂 I'm looking forward to it! As for Blake, he gets a pass from me for his 'peacock' line during the Reginald D. Hunter reaction - GOLD 😂 I'm hoping Lee Mack's trampoline story changes his mind. I get his point, although the genius of Lee is when he sometimes does a cheesy joke he knows the horrid reaction of Rob and the audience is what makes it funny :)
@@errolanthony7462 really? That's awesome! So the local Fish and Chip store that Micky often talks about is near your Mums place? hahaha!
The peacock line was hilarious haha, I think I missed hearing it the first time around and didn't pick up on it until I was editing the video!
I'll bump the trampoline story close to the top of our list, we haven't done a Lee Mack solo video yet so it will be a good opportunity for Blake lol.
@@filmslate Ah yes The Codfather! It was on East Dulwich Road but they closed down a few years ago. They did great Fish and Chips. I guess they decided to move somewhere else. Personally I find that a bit shellfish 😂 Just keeping up with the puns - haha. Very well "placed" btw :)
Hopefully a showing of Lee Mack on good form gets Blake back in the good books of yourself and the others in the comments haha. If the trampoline doesn't do it, then I'd suggest the Bridesmaid story surely must #PrayForBlake haha
I dunno if he still does it, but bob used to name peoples cats for a fee & donate the proceeds to an animal charity.
If you fancy a giggle, id suggest looking some of those names up
He’s an ambassador for The Cats Protection League, I believe. He renames cats in the shelter that have been overlooked and then creates a personalised piece of art in order to boost their profile online and hopefully get them adopted 🐈
@jen6879 That sounds even better! What a lovely bloke
You said David overruled his team to say lie, but actually one member said true and the other said lie. So David was just agreeing with Kian.
True! I meant to say he overruled one of his team members, not both... good catch James!
We did a lot of drugs at that age. Never specifically went to see the gulf stream in a latex mask and a jobbletop, but equally silly adventures did occur, often ending abruptly with police intervention. Good drugs is a reason to do all sorts of things.
I love the logic of listening to the story then going against everything you rationally think and picking the opposite. Probably the best way to play this game when Bob is involved.
Bob was just going along with the 'Sgt Bytheway' joke. A lot of the sarcasm is lost in translation.
Bob is a master as the comedy straight man, (watch Vic & Bob) and Lee Mack is the perfect side kick so Bob can make a comment knowing it has a set up coming if someone catches it and Lee always does!!
They are a great duo Lee and Bob!
I've heard several times that Bob and Vic are a comedy duo but have never seen them together.. do they do stand up together or have like a sketch show or something?
Cheers Zelda!
@@filmslate Several TV shows. Very weird, surreal with slapstick cartoon violence.
Just think Bob's stories in video form.
Amazingly if you read his autobiography you'll find almost all of the names mentioned on this show are real people from his life - including Steve Bytheway.
I've actually seen a book by someone with the last name Bytheway, so it does exist.
There's even been one that has popped up in these comments BK! Haha they are more common than I ever imagined!
There’s another story on this episode. The one on David’s right. Can’t remember the name. It was also hilarious.
Sweet, thanks for the heads up Nathaniel, I'll see if I can track it down :}
Another day another video
Keep making videos!
Good luck
Thanks always legend!
@@filmslate no problem
Love yo bro
Id say Claudia Winkleman is probably next best guest on wilty.
I think you're right Cam, she's a popular choice! I think we'll start on her compilation tomorrow :D Thanks for the suggestion!
Bytheway is an actual surname.. not so much.. by the way.. but .. bythe way
Ah ha! I thought it may have been pronounced that way! But everyone in the comments section is making it seem like it's by-the-way hahaha
Kian has the personality and sense of humour of a brick.
Haha yeah Bobbie he certainly feels like the odd one out in that group!
I thought that but on second and third hearing I realised he did ask some pertinent questions. He just sounds a bit aggressive.
@@heliotropezzz333 Good call Helen! He was more direct and too the point, wanting answers, not playing it up for jokes haha.
I knew someone whose surname was Bytheway.
I'm hearing its very common in the UK! Did he go by By-the-way or Bythe-way? :D
The bit you are missing is that if the story is true - everything including the names has to be true too!
I sent a message to Lee Mack to ask if there's a small degree if exaggeration allowed as long as the kernel story is true. No reply, but I'm guessing there is.
I'm with you, surely they can stray from the truth for the sake of a punchline.
That's a shame he didn't write back though! That would've been very cool..
@@filmslate you guys are awesome. Thanks for adding to my stress relief.
@@JTStonne Anytime JT! Glad to hear we are helping in any way :D
@@filmslate Yeah the general idea is the story has to be true, but you can make up something for a funny bit, as long as it is obviously just a joke - Lee Mack does that a lot. Something else to bear in mind is that with this story, Bob did mention that travelling to be close to the gulf stream was 'one reason among many', so he likely just told the story with that reasoning because it sounded the funniest. He's had a crazy life, but he's also an excellent story-teller!
@@filmslate Lee Mack lives about a mile from me and Rob Brydon's not much further so if I ever see them about I'll ask!
If it wasn’t for the Gulf Stream, Britain would be like 10 degrees colder on average.
Actually the whole of the British Isles would covered in ice and snow for 6 months of the year and it would be much worse if the jet stream moved south to cover the UK. If the Gulf stream had to suddenly switch off we in the UK would be in deep shit. A bit like what North America is experiencing right now with that snow bomb.
Oh wow! I had no idea.. so one could say across the whole of the UK you can "sense the influence of the gulf stream" hahaha
@@filmslate Exactly lol, Bob had a wasted journey, apart from the famous Scotch pies.
@@garymcatear822 Haha the scotch pies could've been well worth it!
@@filmslate They are defo worth it, i'm Scottish and have had too many Scotch pies over the decades to count lol...Scotch pies oot the chippie are best (fish n chip shop), i wonder if Bob has tried the chippie pies.
Why do you stop the video before you get the reaction to the ‘reveal’ of the opposing team?
JUST SHOW THE TV PROG. UNINTERRUPTED FULL SCREEN.
NO NEED FOR COMMENT.
Instead of trying to explain something you have never heard of, just keep quiet. The gulf stream, is a flow of water, that flows from the gulf of Mexico, to the U.K. that protects the U.K. in the winter, and allows sub tropical plants to grow.
So it's a warm flow of water that allows sub tropical plants to grow... say, just like the East Australian Current in ny analogy?
This isn't a science class mate, I tried to explain enough as quickly as possible so Blake would understand the context of the joke, that's it. And to be honest, a comparison to the EAC is completely reasonable at doing that.
Instead of being rude about it Philip, just keep quiet.
