Honestly, with his constant drinking and smoking, it could be a variety of things. His esophagus, stomach, lungs, or even something like his liver could all be attributing to the bloody coughing, depending on what it is. It could be scarring on his esophageal tissue, deterioration of the stomach lining, bronchial decay, or even something like bloody bile from the liver. With Kiryu’s image of regularly drinking and smoking for the last 30 odd years, the odds of the smoke and alcohol causing cancer just about anywhere is plausible.

It’s not just him: everyone around him was smoking constantly, too, indoors and outdoors, and blowing smoke in each other’s faces. Even if he didn’t smoke, he’d have been wrecked by the secondhand exposure.
I think realistically that his immune system was just so strong, it could keep what cancer cells he DID have from rapidly multiplying or spreading...then being exposed to the nuclear waste made him immunocompromised then bam, cancer spreads
And yet it will be just as emotional. I cried like a little bitch at the end of mgs4 man. There's gonna be a lot of scenes where Kiryu is suffering and that's gonna really get me lmao.
speaking of MGS, my stupid guess is that the playable "Kiryu" with cancer in 8 is actually Mirror Face acting as Kiryu. The real john yakuza is living at Morning Glory in Okinawa with Haruka, Yuta, Haruto and the orphans. A mirror (no pun intended) of Venom Snake's situation lol With the amount of stupid ass pulls in the story over the years ("rubber bullets", Joji Kazama, Joon-gi Han and Kashiwagi's return lol) I would not be surprised if RGG pulls something like this.
im honestly expecting a zack style death for kiryu where in the final fight your health is constantly dropping and the game basically forces us to let kiryu go as he inevitably dies from his wounds fighting hundreds of guys and the cancer sapping at him at the same time
Kiryu got cancer. Then he talks with Majima and says they need to cook. After that suddenly game name changes into "Breaking the Law". And Kiryu becomes Kazumaberg meanwhile Goro becomes Majimaman.
Regular cancer from smoking/drinking wouldn't be enough to kill Kiryu. It had to be SUPER CANCER from working with radioactive materials so the cancer would have a fighting chance. I feel horrible about this post.
Imagine he's just like "I thought I had... Testicular cancer. My... Doctor said I had two massive tumors down there, but... Once I told him I was the Dragon of Dojima, he said everything clicked. I've just been so manly my entire life that after some extensive testing, I just had massive balls. So everything's fine, no cancer. 😎👍" *Roll Credits*
I was gonna say this, how could he attribute his cancer to his 2 minute exposure to low-risk radioactive waste when man's been smoking 5 packs a day for his whole life
I took it as him deflecting the blame as a way of dealing with the situation at an emotional level, after all right before he tells them that he has cancer, he mentions something about how life is like painting with a brush and how to have to commit to what you do with it since there's no going back in your actions or something like that
The best part of Yakuza 8 is that they confirmed Judgement Shinpan is returning. We getting a Kiryu/Ichiban duet, boys! One last time before the Dragon ascends.
The nuclear waste thing was such a cop out. But since the games features real cigarette brands, having Kiryu claim smoking gave him cancer couldve gotten Sega in hot water. The tobacco industry is notoriously vicious at defending themselves from bad publicity.
Image if they actually had the balls to kill him off with cancer. I very much doubt it, but I can just imagine how completely depressed majjima would get. "You let shit like cancer kill you kiryu-chan?!?!? If anything should have killed you it should have been me!!!!!!!"
well despite the absurdity of the games, it has been very much grounded to reality - so unless they put him through Chemo or some manner of treatment, i doubt they would keep him alive for very long because even they must realise that the man just needs some peace
I’m gonna be honest, a part of me is gonna be really angry if I see Kiryu smoking in Yakuza 8. He knows he has cancer, and he’s not doing anything to at least slow it down.

I don't see why he wouldn't. If he'll die it will be very late game. And the premium adventure will be at earlier chapter before his death (Yakuza 3 did this for example. As Rikiya dies late game, but he has unique substories)
Ryosuke Horii was in pretty bad shape for a long time. I believe it was stated by either he himself or a team member that he expected 6 would be his last game for a while. It isn’t an easy thing to get over.
He could've said cancer without any further elaboration and I doubt anybody would bat an eye. The radioactive thing is so unnecessary. I guess it kinda accounts for the villains' actions but still, unnecessary.
I get that after 7 or 8 mainline games of Kiryu being a demigod capable of shrugging off blade, blunt, and bullet based traumas, they'd have to have an enemy he actually couldnt beat. All things considered, a disease is probably the only way they're gonna get the man at this point. I will, however, say that i was howling with laughter at how out-of-pocket and sudden the reveal was. It only gets funnier when they show how he actually got it. I'm playing IW now, and i won't be surprised if he lives through it with only some weight loss, hair loss, and a few months of wheelchair living. Maybe we can do a chemotherapy sidestory minigame.
I thought the compilation of him smoking was going to end with him saying it's from the radioactive waste and be like ?????? Lol but I guess this was made before the game came out

Looking like a brooding badass sure takes its toll on the body
Then the twist is that it wasn't all the alcohol OR smoking. It was the fire that sets Kiryu's body on fire during heat moves.
Me idling and making him smoke then pressing the text box and going back to idling again probably caused Kiryu's cancer.
And here I thought it was due to TEN YEARS IN THE JOINT.
He wont die, game director had cancer too
Ryosuke Horii was in pretty bad shape for a long time. I believe it was stated by either he himself or a team member that he expected 6 would be his last game for a while. It isn’t an easy thing to get over.
As mad as i am that he has cancer, Im glad everytime he's downing a glass or puffin a cig it felt like heaven after all the shit hes been through
better call that one hot doctor from 0 to save his ass if possible
Not to mention the constant stress of getting in fights and losing loved ones
Yeah, that would make a lot of sense and would be thematically engaging.
But no... radioactivity.
He could've said cancer without any further elaboration and I doubt anybody would bat an eye. The radioactive thing is so unnecessary. I guess it kinda accounts for the villains' actions but still, unnecessary.
>Has cancer
>Doubles down on it by using weaponized cigarettes...
Seriously.. this should be the advertisement for non smoking.
Gives a much stronger appeal and is carved into my mind LOL
I thought the compilation of him smoking was going to end with him saying it's from the radioactive waste and be like ?????? Lol but I guess this was made before the game came out
10 years in the bar gave you cancer
"I don't think you can heat action your way out of this one..." - Kiryu's doctor
ah yes, thats the consequences of abusing brawlers strenght while drunk thingy
