Living in Minnesota and for fifteen years commuting from a suburb to the city I am always amazed at how quickly some people forget how to drive in snow conditions. Some are new drivers, others simply never learn. One thing I do is to find a deserted stretch of road, get my car to about 20 mph, relax my grip, then hit the brakes-hard. This tells me how my car will react and alerts me to what I am doing.

Same here!! I have lived in the Midwest all of my life (63 years), and every single winter it never fails to boggle my mind how so many Midwesterners have forgotten over the summer how to drive in snowy conditions!! If I live to be 100, I will NEVER understand it!!! Arrrrgggg!! 🙄🙄

As a kid, we would go to the deserted high school parking lot and try to get into skids, to learn how to steer out of them.

3 or 4 years ago I was up in MA in snowy conditions and all the cars and trucks that were wrecked or spun out or went off the road etc had either MA or CT plates on. I'm from TX of course and was driving a semi with trailer and drove thru just fine. But my thought was aren't these people who live up here supposed to be the ones staying on the roads and safely and setting the example. And it happens every winter.

@@thetexastrucker7934 I don't think folks who drive take the time to 'get the feel' of their car. The ride is so smooth and there are so many safety devices and entertainment features nowadays which can almost eliminate having to pay attention. I learned to drive in the late 60's in Indiana-even before steel belted radial tires.

No, the ribbon is not required in personal vehicles in South Caroline. But, it is a good safety suggestion to have a roll of bright neon colored ribbon accessible, just in case. However, it may be a state requirement for those northern states that have snow storms often. We are lucky if we see 10 snowflakes a year in SC!! (Thank goodness!) Happy New Year to you as well, and I hope you and your family stay safe and protected from the covid virus!
