      Price Pfister is one of the best faucets out there.. the old ones at least. The newer ones are mostly cartridges now. They don't last as long and you have to replace the whole cartridge/stem for many of them. Give me this old set up any day. Problem is parts are often harder to come by unless you have an older hardware store around which are also dying out. I worked at a mom & pop for 30 years. Our town has hundreds of old houses built in the 30's so we carried a lot of products for older houses.

    Thank you for this video. I had the same problem and took it apart, the rubber on the end was mushroomed, dried out etc. I replaced it, the packing was good, the larger plastic washer was good, but the smaller one (which is the one that actually stops the flow to the spout) was absent altogether and I couldn't figure out what was missing. I felt like it was a seal right where that plastic one sits but this video confirmed it. I realize a kit comes at the hardware store but I have rubber washers and plastic washers and all the tools at home but I didn't have a diagram from this diverter and you really helped me out.

      Cowbells are a necessity in service plumbing. It is always fun to talk about as well. If you were holding them in your hand walking into someone’s house it would sound like a cowbell I guess! Lol.
      I like a positive shutoff for the water Sandy. My friend said the house shut off did not work for him, so instead of messing with it I like to go straight to the street. I’m working this weekend at work unfortunately. Not bad though! Hope you have a great weekend.

      That Fix It Guy hi. A plumber installed a brand new tub faucet yesterday. Now there is an issue. When running the diverter, only water comes out of the diverter with good pressure. The problem is when running the shower, the diverter still running. Both at good pressure. When everything is turned off, there are no leaks. I noticed this after the plumber installed and I asked the plumber why the diverter would still run, when shower is still running. The plumber said that is what the new faucets do now. That seems like a huge waste of water when showering. Is what he’s saying true or did he install something wrong? If he installed wrong, what is the fix?

    • @ThatFixItGuy
      @ThatFixItGuy  3 года назад

      Hello and thank you for reaching out. That is not true about “that is the way it works these days” there is something going on with the diverter. I would pull the diverter stem out and check for a missing washer or loose washer. Did he supply it? Do you think it could have been open? It could have the wrong diverter in it.

    • @salsamink
      @salsamink 3 года назад

      That Fix It Guy thank you so much! It was a plumber sent out by my home insurance warranty (AHS) that installed everything. He said he ordered the part and it was new. I thought it was fishy when he said that’s how they do now days, because that to me would be such a waste of money. I know nothing about plumbing and didn’t want to confront him without knowing if that was normal or not. I will ask the home warranty insurance to send someone new because if he is a certified plumber he should know better or he just completely lied to me because he just wanted the money and go to the next job without doing the job correctly. So hard to find good plumbers now days like the good ole days, when they cared about their customers and took pride in the work they did 😞. Honestly that’s how many companies are now. Again thanks so much for letting me know. I appreciate you.

    Number one rule in plumbing: IF IT'S NOT BROKE, DON'T FIX IT.
    All you had to do here was change the diverter washer and the bottom washer. THAT WAS IT.
    The seat was fine. The washer was not torn up from the seat being cracked or chipped.
    The packing was PERFECT. Absolutely no need to change it.
    The only other thing I would have suggested was to put teflon tape around the threads on the seat because old shower bodies tend to wear down over time because they are brass. (as is the seat).
    Another thing here is to keep the escutcheon nipple IN the packing nut because you may know how to grab that with a pliers but many don't and it's extremely soft and can be easily bent, then the nipple does not go back in then the escutcheon will not screw back on. Then you will need a new stem unless you This was a lot more work than it needed to be.
    PS: "shower socket set". but "cowbells" is funny. ;-)

    I replaced my diverter valve and now it doesn’t send water to my shower head. Can it that when I took out my old valve the washer was broken, could the broken piece got stuck where the water goes to my shower head. Cause now it just drips water from my shower head. Thank you 🙏🏽

    • @ThatFixItGuy

      It could have done that. You could take the diverter back out and take the shower head off. Blow air from the shower arm and clear what’s in there

    Hi how do you know which repair kit to purchase ? i have a 3 handle shower as well and the water is coming from the spout and the shower head so i took out the diverter in the middle and noticed that white washer was worn out so is that the cause of the problem how do i know which repair kit to purchase? i`ve tried going to Home Depot and Lowes and no luck on a white washer, Thank in advance

      Do you have an ace locally? That is where I purchased the kit. Do you know what brand it is? I would take the stem out and take a picture then you can match it up at the store. If you buy a repair kit then I think it will be for a couple different valve styles.

    As a plumber I don't do half fixes. I replace the whole stem including seat, same for diverter. Funny thing here is there was absolutely no need to close the main water line. Reason being is the diverter was replaced not one of the stems. You shut water off when doing a stem no need to shut water for just the diverter. Other than that the repair was fine but again I don't like callbacks therefore the whole diverter or stem and seat is what I would replace.

      Smart like you said, don't like getting call backs and wasting your time to do the job over for free. Do it right the 1st time and then no going back for that, if anything, might go back to replace a leaky mixing valve only, that is a different part and not same pieces at all. It's how water gets turned on and some can be a pain to do with those very fine threads. Tight fit and getting the mix just right if have the slide from hot or hotter to medium or just slide it over to cold, I set mine at the middle, my son turns it to very hot in winter and empties out 40 gallons of hot water. Yes it feels great if back issues, I used to but can't take it anymore since I quit smoking, the hot steam bothers me if in to long, 10 minutes max, wish I could do longer on back massage or use the Jacuzzi part but just not that comfortable, looks nice only. If have one, keep an old tooth brush too help clean in jets and out of jets in the holes on tub. Works great along with the cleaner to use and it cleans out pipes from any buildup. Don't use anymore and clean once a year.

      @Brandon I would shut the hot water off and take out that stem check. then with a flashlight see if any thing is in there causing issue. I would then leave the stem out stuff a rag or something around the hole so you don't get water going into the wall. I would have someone else turn the water back on and make sure there is good pressure. close the shower curtain when you do this. It does not have to be for long, but you want to make sure there is pressure coming out.

    These aren't cheap to replace if not covered under warranty, I buy Delta Products with lifetime warranty, any issues with my Delta stuff, they send me new product to fix my older system, they even changed the valve to make it better in 2006 and sent out new mixing valve for new model that cost new in lowes of $88 i think, I get one from before 2006 year, I always tell them too, they sent by accident twice in a row the wrong one. I called, and I'm in the system from buying new 20 years ago and registered the product, it cost a lot back then, they just sent me a new 6 inch Spout, with piece inside of the spout that's copper with threads on it, don't recall the name, it costs them $125.59, they sent Stainless Finish to me by mistake, I'm sure the person just pressed wrong key by mistake, if I end up selling house one day, then DON'T match, I called and someone put in wrong color, there sending a new one out to me that's Chrome so it matches everything else.
