One of the low key impressive things in this episode is how Matt continued his normal dm tasks but still managed to accurately recall who said what so he could mimic it as Kiri the entire time.
If you concentrate your attention on him you see him sometimes smirk and take a note of things players have said. "Wrapped around his weenie."
@@meph2473 He's also mentioned in his DM Tips series that he uses a check mark system when they do something either very in-character or meta-gamey to add or subtract essentially social exp. It seems this campaign is more milestone instead of exp, but he may be also notating those things
People can do that by improving their memory recall skills, by learning a couple new things daily, and typically reading books is good food for thought. 😆😋
Seriously though, Matt writes the campaign, he's written books, and he's read thousands more. And that's probably not all of the factors contributing to his impressive recall skills.
My point is---and really---I think you guys knew this, but Matt is incredible at this DM/GM thing. I'd be really impressed if he could recall exact damage for almost every encounter, but there are limits to being human. Most DMs can't remember simple names lmao
I'm on my third watch through of the entire series and there's still new stuff surprising me. It's a lot.

Also a testament to their friendship, because I think Sam just panicked and used the first letters of Veth's last name (a couple episodes back he gave Veth as a fake name for Nott too) but because they're so close they come up with similar things like for names

Cali was so amazing. Her standing up for Caleb and after he walked away giving the scroll to Nott to give it to Caleb later and not going into Caleb's personal space.
Cali really annoyed me. But that part was a good gesture/roleplay.

He gave them way more time I would have. He was generous.
I was listening and thinking "they're gunna need a stealth check for whispering in the cavern for so long." A minute later: "Everyone make a stealth check."
The second day started bickering I was already annoyed, knowing that they were about to lose their ambush.
They deserved everything they got. Since they haven’t learned in the last 135+ episodes, it’s not like they’re going to learn from this either.
Maybe my biggest grip, next to just Mariya herself, with this group, is that they argue over a single plan instead of coming up with other plans and it just turns into a shitting-on-others-ideas fest.

yeah, not sure if that was just lost on Marisha, or its just that she's acting that beau is just kind of like that in general. It does make sense for her character to act like that, creating a bit of drama and what not, makes sense, its not like they have deep rooted connections like the first campaign, they are a bunch of misfits who have only known each other for like a month at this point.
@@lobear3074 I suspect its acting :D She pretty much immediately admits to Fjord she was in the wrong. It's possible she got lost in the character, but that is still acting in its own way I suppose.

Caleb was absolutely right to be cautious with this, but I was disappointed he didn't figured out to use the Mage Judge on this! Before they started a quarrel I was already cringing they are still not getting it. And as their silly fight got worse in words I was just sitting with heavy facepalm, cringing, saying "Wow, Caleb, Mr Wizard with 20 INT can't add 2 with 2 to make 4" :( First time I was disappointed with Caleb even that he was totally right to be cautious.

I was losing my mind at that point, they spent precious ambush time debating if Fjord is half fish then got surprise when they lost the surprise attack.
@@DM-zh2ktultimately it’s not a very combat focused show, and since they are all actors I feel like they exceed at the talking part anyway. Though I agree sometimes the game mechanic mistakes can be annoying. They have gotten better at it in some ways

Sam's "Caleb also likes to burn his friends"-joke went totally under-appreciated because only he and Marisha were there for the backstory. XD
Actually, on talks machina it's revealed that he encouraged everyone to watch that part of the episode later that week, so all the players know what happened in his backstory, only the characters don't know the info.

@@nite012 That's... actually disappointing. What benefit is there of them knowing if their characters don't? None, except for metagaming. Why agree to clear the table to just backtrack on it later? Does he also encourage them all to watch their solo encounters with him?
@@Ailieorz i think it was only for caleb's backstory. liam said in talks that it'll be quite redundant to relay the entire story in-game to the other characters (esp if it'll happen with one or two characters at a time again) and would disrupt the flow of the game. that's why he encouraged the others to watch it. he also kinda regretted not seeing the other cast members' reactions at the table but was grateful that matt agreed with the experiment.
@@Ailieorz they don’t really metagame that much. Sometimes they do slightly just to get the plot moving and so they don’t repeat the same thing again.
They've changed so many rules to make the game more fun, but somehow "Cats don't have dark vision" is where they draw the line. lol
But they do, don't they? Or is it only certain species...because big cats hunt at night, but I think even housecats see in the dark.

But then they're not cats! Cats can see in the dark (well they need a sliver of light to see, so not 100% darkness)
Darkvision is more of a magical thing- being able to see with no light. Cats can see well with low light conditions just not absolute darkness, which is what darkvision does

@@stingerjohnny9951 Meh, would be hard to maintain viewership, having to wait for a whole season of some other storyline. The next VM cycle is Chroma Conclave, and then the Vecna arc. They'll catch up soon enough.

They uploaded the Project Alpha version. The G&S pay site that shut down shortly after the split. The HP trackers are only available only available on the live streams in 2019
@@krisbarski4226 They didn't really do a good job of it though XD The numbers were wrong almost all the time, and the weird notifications and comments on the side were just hilariously weird sometimes. Cool concept, but execution was not so great. Obviously understand that it's hard to know how much they gained from short rest and stuff, they don't exactly state that shit out loud.
I really like how they change the characters pictures when they're heavily injured, as well! It makes the entire thing feel more real.

I like how Caleb learned more about a god in 30 seconds with a 12 arcana roll than the entire c3 party did in 50+ episodes.
If only this was just a funney joke, and not the fate of Exandria resting on the choices of people who continue to be wilfully ignorant about how the gods and the world actually work 😭

I mean, I don't dislike Beau, cause you know, this happened very early on in the story and everyone hasn't known each other much,.
They did grow into an unbreakable family later on and everyone grew into a better version of themselves.
I did think Beau was unreasonable in this episode, but overall, she is still an amazing character, just like everyone else.
@@chrisg8989 in Campaign 1 Marisha's character was indeed the least likeable for me. Beauregard in the beginning also didn't do it for me, but she became one of my favourites over time.
Beu is great on her own, but her antagonistic side about Caleb is getting really annoying, cause she goes really far with it, even if it means going against something she otherwise would probably do (like using the truth spell with someone they just met, just to be sure of their intentions).
I loved Cali for actually being the only smart person there beside Caleb and Nott, and agreeing with Caleb's choice and even defending him.
Yeah that whole interaction was absolutely stupid. I was kinda frustrated but humored with Nott for hiding the Bowl but then realized why he did it when I realized that Caleb would inspect it. It was the only wise thing to do. And as an ex-cultist/brainwashed person Caleb has some really hard earned wariness and wisdom about evil stuff and liars. As someone whose been a vagrant and has seen the hard sides of the streets he would naturally be untrusting. M9’s knee jerk over the top hatred of Caleb’s obviously wise decision was so hard to sit through. I do like how eventually in C3 Matt uses this collective naïveté to eff them over.
Besides that Beau’s use of platitudes and false wisdom bombs is so annoying. The “we’ll learn from that if it happens” line was infuriating. Tbh if I was playing Caleb I would have blown up on her and said “I DID learn from it. When I trusted a man who convinced me to murder my family”. Like shit, Beau, way to take Caleb’s trust in confiding in you and shit on it. Beau is trash. Still love M9 so far but they are hella dumb at times.
at 4:10:09, the way liam delivered the line, "beauregard, what if she had been lying to us?" hurt me so much. he plays caleb so heartbreakingly well

Everyone else: Why would we be cautious with that? Super powerful artifacts should always go to people you met this morning who self professed growing up in a cult.
But at the same time it suits theirs characters so well! Like Beau is extremaly against abuse of power and meddling with others business and Jester really doesnt like to doubt other people.
Everyone seems to have a problem with the group regarding this but their issue wasn't that he tried to keep an evil item away from Cali, it was that he didn't discuss it with the group and made a unilateral decision. It's the same reason why the group had problems with Nott/Caleb in the earlier episodes and had the whole discussion with Nott about making decisions together as a party on party time, while they could do their own thing on their own time.
Caleb & Nott still behaving like a clique when the others just want everyone to be involved.

How in the world are you supposed to discuss that in the context of where that scene happened? They’re supposed to discuss this while stealing it and with Cali in the same room? Caleb even tried to aside Beau.
I’m really not understanding what you’re trying to say. A split decision like that can’t be discussed with everyone weighing in for 20 minutes like they tried to in this exact same episode and lost their sneak attack opportunity. They made the correct decision, and Caleb often made the big decisions that saved them or sent them off onto a new thread.
If that were true, everyone BUT Caleb and Nott were the bad guys in the situation since that was NOT the time to talk about that.
@@rhysproudmourne1646 Just as Nott was able to take Caleb aside to give the item to him, it could have been done with most if not all the group members. Not to mention both Nott and Caleb have the message cantrip which although is not feasible to use for lengthy discussions, it is enough to ask people to find a private corner and have a discussion. It's not an excuse to make unilateral decisions.
We're not discussing the missed surprise round scene, that was definitely a missed opportunity and a bad decision on part of the group. I am only talking about the particular incident with Caleb unilaterally deciding to not give up an item which the party helped obtain.
Dumbest thing was Beau response to "what if she was lying". Beau "then she lied to us and we take it and learn it as a lesson" OMG what an idiotic response. Even Cali had to jump and explain to Beau she's dumb. Geeze that was cringe to watch. Poor Liam you could tell he was really wanting to say something outside of character about that lol

First time watcher here. Does Beau improve as a character later on, cuz she is the most annoying character I've ever watched. And does everyone stop shitting on Caleb so much at some point cuz this is like the third time in the campaign Caleb took a group beating for no good reason. Cali kind of defending Caleb towards the end was sweet and seemed like damage control on Mark's part lol

So you've got a character who is descended from a specifically evil kind of dragon. And they have a tendency to be overwhelmed by that draconic nature. And they admit to having done some seriously evil shit as part of a cult dedicated to one of the great forces of evil in the world who is also draconic.
Sure let's give them the bowl without checking their intentions. You know the bowl. The one that lets you commune with said evil draconic god when you fill it with blood. The evil bowl. The bowl specifically for evil. That bowl.
That really pissed me off. No one but Caleb and Nott see an issue with that and even go as far as to scold him for it. What a bunch of morons.

Can I just say I love the contrast of Matt bending over backwards last episode to make sure the Nein saved Kiri to this episode where he’s doing everything he can to kill the little pervert dude they hired 😂
Like Kiri tanked a 19 damage hit that definitely should have killed her, meanwhile the Nein took their eyes of this dude for 10 seconds and Matt was like “Sorry he got snatched by a troll, it happens 🤷🏽”
Well he did show them it's home full of bones AND that it would try to pick off solo people. They ignored all that and decided to just ignore the clearly hunting bone troll--so at some point consequences have to come to roost.
Kiri did have to start making death saving throws after that 19 damage. And assuming she's just using a standard Kenku stat block, that's about right.
@@Introbuluson one of the talks Matt mentioned that Kiri's health pool is absolutely single digits, can't remember exactly how much, and that hit should've killed outright, no saving throws allowed.

Exactly what I was thinking. I’m watching Campaign 2 for the first time. I keep thinking, “Hey! The fucking Hand of Vecna is out there, on a necromancer barbarian, canonically, in their timeline currently, in their world.” The actors know that, and they try not to metagame, but come on! They know better than to trust guests with powerful, evil artifacts.
Caleb is also the guy who killed his parents, became crazy, and now wants to control time. Even if he was right, him keeping powerful magic shit is a complete cancel. It feels kinda like projection on the character part. He thinks no one with magic should attain powerful objects, cuz if it was him, he would fuck up for sure. Tbh, it's kinda of annoying, I hope he gets better at later episodes

Beau's tearing into Caleb pissed me off something fierce.
Especially when you look at the fact that,
1: Beau has no reason to act as a moral authority. This is a Keyleth trait that carried over, which means it’s more of a Marisha thing.
2: Marisha as Keyleth got in VM’s way multiple times because she had moral tingles, which often had LARGE-SCALE, immediate, and dire consequences (such as saying nothing about allying with the Clasp until they were meeting with a higher up in the group, then insulting them to their faces until they revoked VM’s tenuous good graces with them at a time when they needed desperately to work together).
3: THIS WASN’T THAT. He didn’t say “we should keep this forever and make an enemy of Cali.” He said they should wait for a few hours, verify that she was telling the truth, and then give it to her.
Add in her haughty, self-righteous tirade afterwards where she used his trauma to guilt him into silence like she was his fucking mother and sdbfivbijnjkndskjfnksjdnfkjne

Extremely agree. Dude was just trying to protect him and his comrades from a stranger having access to a very powerful item, but Marisha saw room for attention and a crappy speech and she jumped. I do like Beau more than Keyleth but geeze she makes it tough.

It was definitely a poor choice though and completely uncalled for. Caleb wanted to help and all he got was his own history (told in confidence) thrown back in his face.

Beau telling Caleb "you don't get to control others because of your PTSD and your shitty self-image" made no sense to me here. She's already used that in a previous episode, and it was spot on. This was about something way beyond himself. That was a dangerous item, and he was the only one being cautious, while the rest were just not wanting to be distrusting of a guest's character on the show. A little rough getting through that conflict with Beau, because no one else had his back. Marisha tries too hard sometimes. Liam was my favorite player in C1 and he's already becoming my favorite in C2.
Matt: Every hit it takes, it spews this toxic green caustic spray that really damages the shit out of anyone near it. Oh, and Febron is dead cause you hit it and is covered in it.
Marisha: I run up and take as many attacks as possible.

FWIW, the first attacks to do that were piercing damage, which make sense to puncture pustules. Bludgeoning and magical attacks make less sense to have the same effect.

It’s my first time watching through these Campaigns. Loving VM and want to know about M9 before the animation. Watched all the animated openings, but never saw this animated ad and recognized the art style. Needless to say I will be watching it again frame by frame! 😊
The fact that the whole group was so willing to immediately trust Cali when they STILL don’t trust Caleb and Nott is wild to me. They even have a spell to ensure someone is telling the truth and refused to even entertain the idea. It honestly made me think less of most of the party. Especially Beau, who KNOWS why Caleb doesn’t trust easily when it comes to powerful magic.
Agreed so much. just started listening to this season and every episode has Beau basically barrating Caleb and Knot for being the only two smart characters. then the rest of the group just agrees without thinking anything through. It's been pissing me off considering Knot and Caleb are literally the only ones who've made sense the whole time.

Neither of them are particularly good people at this point (Keep in mind Liam himself fully expected Caleb to go full evil eventually before Character development ht and Beau was stil extremely selfish)i but they do work things out. Plus Beau does grow out of her more selfish bratty nature

She says as she literally wrestles control of the bowl away from him. One of Marisha's most annoying nights in a long time. Her freaking out at Matt for not letting her use her bonus action unarmed attack to fling a fishman corpse into a ball of total darkness as a ranged attack was particularly bewildering.
A good chunk of the inner conflict of the group has been everyone (especially Bue) getting on Caleb's case I feel.

Marisha never seems to know what is going on, yet always wants to be involved in things that don't concern her. ("Acid sprays when you attack it", "Ok. I punch it 20 times.") She constantly annoys me. About 10 episodes ago, her and Taliesin yelled at Sam about not being trusting enough. Sam turned it into an endearing and tender moment, and they kept fucking yelling at him. So frustrating.

Caleb’s expression when Nott says his name is Bren. Either Liam told Sam (which I doubt) or it’s just a crazy coincidence. Either way, it was a really great exchange between characters
I believe it was stated in a later Talks Machina that it was pure coincidence, and Liam for a moment thought Matt had told Sam some stuff about Caleb's past for whatever reason.

she had the perfect item to do it with! I'm sure in some other scenario it would have taken a bit to solve this little mini-puzzle, especially if they had sold the blade.
