Mall Turned Parking Garage - Checking Up on the St Louis Centre

- Remember this place? It's not often that a mall (or any building, for that matter) gets turned into a parking garage. But that's exactly what happened to the former St. Louis Centre a few years ago. Defunct since 2006, the developer that renovated this former enclosed downtown shopping mall only kept the street-level shops as retail. With the exception of a movie theater that extends into part of the 2nd floor, they converted the rest of the structure into parking. It's almost surreal inside. I never thought about it, but NetCenter which used to be Newmarket Fair Mall in Hampton, Virginia (somehow Sears is still open I don't know why) was once a shopping mall turned into an office complex. The glass elevator in the middle still works.
I worked for Macy's in 1977 for 5 year's I was a server Macy's Christmas time you could go to that place n Christmas shop good days
The whole downtown mall for a city like St Louis was ill conceived. Downtown has lost so much of its clout as a business center. Corporations are fleeing. The only activity is sports events, a few conventions, yuppies along Washington Ave.
Violent crime happens daily.
Really sad..
1:52 - That looks just like the terminal at Chicago O'Hare International Airport leading to concourses 'H' and 'K'. Stunning resemblance!
As a portrait photographer, I love photographing in the garage!
Sadly, they closed this mall in 2006. wow, did I have some good times there! It was a great place to spend time with friends and family. It just became too dangerous in that area for a lot of people.
When i lived in St.Louis in 86-87 i was 21 and i used to go to the St louis centre all the time, it's so sad what has become of it, it was a very busy place on any day, man i miss it.
Really kinda makes you sad, thinking about how Downtown used to be filled with people shopping and having a good time and now its just ok! Peace!
I loved that mall its sad to see that's all that is left
I remember parking here and getting stuck on the other side of the bridge (on 4). I think the KONE’s are a bit glitchy now.
It's awesome that this mall was converted instead of being demolished completely. At least the structure still stands.
that's a very strange transformation. how busy does it get?
There is a retail building in San Francisco near the opera house that had several floors converted to a garage.

It’s such a shame to know that this was a thriving mall at one point, but now just a parking garage.
I've already seen the same thing but in the other way : a parking garage converted into a mall !
Horrible mindless short-term thinking destruction. I remember it at it's glory on a work trip from Indiana University to St. Louis.
I remember when this mall opened. High end retailers like Abercrombie & Fitch. The mall was a big hit for about 3 months. Then people realized they could all the same stuff at the suburb malls without the hassle of crime ridden downtown riff raff. People were murdered walking to their cars.
I think I shopped there -- or mostly just spent time there while others shopped -- in the late Eighties. Nothing is too familiar...
