McNeilus Rear Loader: City of Naples

- An earlier drive by of the Naples yard had convinced me the LEU/ZR I saw through the fence was the new recycling truck, so I was surprised to come across this truck handling the recycling in the same neighborhood I had filmed the G&H split rear loader three years earlier. Apparently the ZR collects at apartments and some of the more spaced out neighborhoods, while this truck takes care of the rest. I was glad to catch this one while I could, it's now been replaced by two more ASLs which I'll get to filming later. Won't give away what they are, but I will say the city did take into account all the extra recycling being set out when they chose their new trucks.
The City of Naples' conversion to carted single stream recycling has been nothing short of an runaway success. The previous set up involved two 25yd G&H split body RLs on Mack LEs, with two men per truck sorting 18 gallon containers at the curb into fibers and containers. Now collection is handled by 3 ASLs (1 ASL and this RL at time of filming) collecting 64 gallon carts, often with extra recyclables alongside. Apparently Naples' residents have really embraced the new system, so much so that a new transfer station is being built to handle the additional volume. Until then trucks will continue to unload into a pit at the city's yard, from which the recyclables are transferred to (I think) roll off to be taken to a MRF in Ft. Myers.
As always thanks to the crew, filmed June 21st and July 12th, 2013.
My son has loved garbage trucks since he was three and this was his favorite video
Great footage! I really like how the recycling doesn't look contaminated. The residents must be great at sorting. I truck looks in great condition as well. Great work!
Thanks! The truck is pretty new so that explains why it looks so good lol. Not much contamination at all, which surprised me.
Great job on the video! Really enjoyed watching this truck! Even though they are very common, I always enjoy seeing a Mack MR or MRU with a McNeilus REL... maybe because I spent a lot of time on those types of trucks.
Thanks! I really enjoyed filming it, much more than I thought I would considering it's a MRU McNeilus. The quick tipper and packer and nice neighborhood helped take the edge off lol.

Good stuff George! Tipper actually was pretty fast and seemed to work pretty well. Stop at 2:04 had a lot of cardboard - hardly ever see stops like that out here in CA lol whenever he packs, you could really tell that this truck was packed full of recyclables - i find it really fun to see all the stuff fall out everytime the packer "opens" up. How long has Naples been single stream? The Ottos at the end look really nice. Awesome work as always - great to see a new video from you!!
Thanks, glad you liked it! They've been doing single stream for a couple years now. The stuff falling out is a bit of an issue with the McNeilus packers, other makes don't do it as much or at all. Sometimes stuff spills out onto the street, one of the reasons I'm not a huge fan of these.
surprised you only filmed this over two days, seemed like we saw every one of the city's employees on riding and driving duty... Other than my recognition of reincarnated Marley, who I remember from the split G&H vid, I dig the random radio one of the other guys had attached to his pant leg. I guess so as not to miss anything from dispatch while out of the truck?
Glad to learn about a tipper manufacturer that's new to me, now just figure out the one on Christian's arizona refuse RL and you'll have yourself a gold star
also, lol @ leaving 6:33 in the upload
There's a crew of two on the recycling truck on each day, with one of the same guys on both days. Plus the one stop with all the cardboard where a driver one-manning an identical truck on the trash route stopped to help out. As for the radio, I guess it doesn't really make sense to leave it mounted in the cab if not absolutely necessary.
Barker Products makes some kick ass tippers, a lot of those sweet unlabeled tippers we see on RLs in the Virginia/Mid-Atlantic area are built by them. Quality stuff. It seems my local McNeilus dealer has recently started pairing them with the bodies they sell. For us enthusiasts it's a great way to spruce up an otherwise run of the mill 'Neilus. You'll have to shoot me a link to Christian's vid and I'll see what I can do :)
