    Maybe a bad ground. Also, get some feeler gauges to check the gap on those points. Lastly, that voltage may be too low for the system to function. It was only 3 or something like that? Why so low? It should easily be over 12, I think.

    Overheating alarm. That's the horn your hearing. The sending unit is on the head. The wire must be grounded out some place.

    If ignition points aren't used in a long period of time they oxidize and need to be cleaned and reset 45 years of engine repair tells me that.
