This is the only documentary where I've seen someone being so vulgar, you can tell how uncomfortable the maiko are. Normally rude questions like that would get a customer blacklisted so they wouldn't be welcome anymore.

It's a cutting and changing of the hairstyle and turning of the collar to signify the maiko becoming a geiko. The geiko/maiko also gets to choose whoever she wants to sleep with and is not forced to sleep with anyone. Prostitution is illegal in Japan.
Darci Allen the changing of the collar is called “erikae”. Mizuage is more akin to a Sweet 16 or quinceanera. They don’t graduate from maiko to geiko just because they had their mizuage, at least not anymore. I remember reading about this in Mineko Iwasaki’s memoir Geisha, A Life (aka as Geisha of Gion in other markets) and iirc she had her mizuage (hers didn’t include a sexual event either, she was a geisha in the 60s/70s) years before she had her erikae and graduated from maiko to geiko.
The whole interaction was super gross. This is by far my least favorite documentary on the culture. The parts that focused on the maiko themselves was nice though, I just wish it didn't have that perverted overtone. It's a really bad representation for the culture.

It doesn't really take scads of money. A Geisha costs about $150 an hour for a party. Typically you hire 2 or 3, rent the room and pay for food. You tip about $50 each. All in all, it's $3,000 for a party and you can split it among 5 or 6 men. That's less than men spend for a weekend trip.
My mother in law is a Geisha and she certainly doesn't consider those women as family and neither does she consider all people in Japan as family. She never went through the Mizuage ceremony because she never allowed one man to ever have power over her. She absolutely loathe how the Geisha world is outside her Hanamachi and she wouldn't spend one second in the company of a Maiko unless she has to because she finds them to be the epitome of stupidity, and she has had countless (japanese style) altercations with Geiko from Kyoto and other Kagai because of the way they give power to men and how they compromise all their so-called principles the second a man is willing to open his wallet as long as they open their legs. My mother in law was one of the most successful Geisha of her Hanamachi and she has earned every penny on her feet not off them. She has instigated countless reforms and was a very close friend of Mineko whom she still meets regularly. My mother in law won't even agree to use a shamisen which is not made of synthetic skin and won't participate to a recital if the shamisen is made of actual cat and dog skin, she cares too much for animals for that. She is also Jain and was one of the rare Geisha who never compromised her beliefs and would never touch anything of animal origin served to her even if the customer insisted, and if the customer was too insistent, she would just politely bow and excuse herself. She was the daughter of a Geisha so she reported to nobody but her own mother and even left the Karyukai of her mother (ponto cho) when her mother retired to move to one where women had rights. She also graduated university and got a proper education while working as a Geisha. She married for a while with a man she loved and had a child and then divorced because she wanted to work again as a Geisha and her ex husband and herself kept a terrific relationship even after the divorce and after he re-married. She would never consider a Geisha who lets any man have power over her, a sister or a family member, not even a friend, and certainly not family, and as for Japan she wishes to change far more thing about the country that she wishes to preserve things. Who the hell made this documentary, the Yomiuri shinbun or the japanese far right wing party !

She was actually one of Mineko's friends who told her to write her own book rather than to meet with Arthur Golden as they all thought this would end up in a gigantic fiasco, and they were right. This is the true Karyukai. 80% of the Kyoto Kagai is now a place for tourists visiting Kyoto Geishaland as it is often called in the Karyukai in comparison to Tokyo Disneyland. True Geisha are controversial, and powerful, capable of changing the face of Japan if they wish to. These are the ones who will NEVER write a book, because they would end up with a rock attached to their ankle at the bottom of lake Tazawa ! Mineko never intended to write her book but had no choice after Golden outed her. Then she wrote this little pastel pink book, to make everyone happy. Barely touching out important topics (although she did mention the Burakumin discrimination, which was courageous) and militated for the important of Maiko and Geiko to get a college degree and also for the Karyukai to allow Geisha to marry (if they wish to). She still earned a large amount of respect among her peers. Other Geisha have written Japanese book, some tackling subject of sexually transmitted diseases and how three Geisha died of aids, other talked of the alcoholism which plagues the kagai, the next one should talk about Covid as nothing has ever been worse to the Karyukai than this pandemic. My mother in law is fighting for the abandonment of cat and dog skins and for the right of women to study, marry and the strict interdiction to hire a 15 year old Maiko to go to banquets where alcohl is served since it goes against national labour law and is allowed only in Kyoto. Nowhere else in Japan can a person work until he or she is 16 years old, except in Kyoto. And of course for Maiko to receive proper wages and not pocket money and get national insurance, which they don't. But of course that's not as hot a story as what Arthur decided to write (deforming and paraphrasing 70% of what Mineko told him and then using her name to validate the whole thing). Trust me Mineko wants him at the bottom of lake Tazawa and it would only take a phone call from her for this to happen but now this would be a waste of energy and too great a risk.

As a Japanese individual who has carried and protected family / cultural traditions this whole time in Japan, I must say, WTF is this documentary. I have never seen a documentation as inaccurate and attention seeking as this. This is worse than "Memoirs of Geisha".

In Akasaka where my mother in law and sister in law are (were for my mother in law) Geisha, things are completely different. My sister in law is a law school graduate and has a PhD in geopolitics and company laws. She is also a Geisha. In Akasaka they don't entertain rich idiots like in Kyoto, they entertain the elite in politics, science, traditional arts etc, ... so the Geisha is expected to be educated and knowledgeable. The Akasaka Geisha are like the Venitian courtesans of the old days, like Veronica Franco, that is why they are still alive and the profession is thriving. Because there are geishas in Akasaka with degrees in medicine, science, politic, etc, .... which is also why the men never get bored with them. Kyoto's Geisha will disappear because they want to keep the tradition of pretty stupid women alive and the next generation of potential customers can get pretty and stupid online anywhere ! Even the hostesses of Akasaka and Ginza are all top university graduates and are among the smartest ladies in the country, but while a top Geiko in Kyoto makes between the equivalent of 10000 and 25000 dollars a months, a top hosetess in Ginza makes 10 000 dollars minimum an evening and are all multimillionaires. Not because they sleep with customers but because they are highly educated and insanely beautiful.

The Akasaka Geisha are like the Venitian courtesans of the old days, like Veronica Franco, that is why they are still alive and the profession is thriving. So many things mentioned are incorrect. Their the exact opposite of prostitutes. They represent elegance, class, grace and tradition. What they do takes years of training, hard work and dedication. They have education, experience, dignity and self respect. They shouldn't be cheapened by you wrongfully classifying them as a common prostitute.
