Moorland Vermin Control With A Centre fire/FAC Air Rifle

- Hi every one, here in the UK Crows and Magpies can cause devastating damage to the rare nesting birds we have on our moors for example Curlews, lapwings meadow pipits and many many more, they also predate on the song bird population ,also around lambing time the crows will peck out the eyes of the newborn lambs while they are vulnerable just after birth and even at times while the Ewe is giving birth crows will peck out the eyes and tongues of a lamb,so as a pest controller our laws let us control them all year round..here i am using a FAC air rifle and a 223 center fire rifle as the crows can wise up avoiding traps and keeping out of range of the shotgun at times cheers

He's a more trustworthy friend than many humans. You can always count on him unconditionally.
Sure can pal
Unfortunately, they don't last that many years, so sad to see them getting old and stiff.
Don’t know what to admire more, your shooting skills or your technical knowledge and wind reading skills. Anyhow, it’s absolutely impressive. So many clean and clear kills. Never saw something before that comes even close to it.
Thanks a lot Stefan.
I always thought I shot really well at still metal targets. But Simon's skills make me look like an amateur.

He is better than Zajcew from movie Enemy at the Gates :)
I knew he was a good friend, and I felt he was something way more. It's really nice to have a friend to do things with.
Thanks Chip
Not sure if you guys gives a shit but if you are bored like me during the covid times then you can watch all of the latest series on InstaFlixxer. Been binge watching with my gf for the last few months =)
@Walker Hugh yea, I've been watching on InstaFlixxer for since december myself =)
Excellent shooting and crows can smell a gun.
Thanks Gary you could be right also
SO glad you did the second shot, so the magpie didnt suffer. Also, an awwwww for the puppy (old puppy), you need to get another one, so it can learn from him. plus it gives him a buddy as well.
Thanks pal..
One really fine shooter, your wind reading skills are unquestionably of the finest I have seen.
Thanks Larry
Yep! And owner of a most wonderful Dog! :), Got to love the old loyal Lab!
My dogs are members of a K9 search and rescue group... we spend huge amounts of time with them working and mostly not working!
I watch your vids and I understand the company your dog and you keep as he sits and lays down with you, patient and yet Observant.
I sir Appreciate your marksmanship and gun building skills but I appreciate you and your dog more. I am sorry to hear the bad news

Good shooting pal, the old fella is still happy to go and retrieve for you which is nice to see. I hate how our best friend's age so quickly. Keep up the good work 👍🏴
Thanks John ye he's been a cracking dog in his day
A couple weeks prior to watching this I saw a video on what these birds do to baby lambs as they were being born and it was disheartening. Glad to see them being taken care of like this. Good shooting!
Glad you see that Hans
Great shooting. Love seeing your good friend Jack by your side. He looks like a great companion.
Thanks Rudy he sure is pal.
I'm a firefighter and people always tell me that I have the best job but I'd take your job in a heartbeat.
Lol thanks Torrey
Cracking conservation job for the songbirds and ground nesting birds...Far too many Carrion Crows and Magpies around despite what Packham and the RSPB etc would have us who really know believe !!
100 percent right pal thanks a lot
@@tompepper2050 ye its a tuff one really Tom but we have to still do what we know is right and just keep abiding by the law...
dont forget the buzzards ,introduced near me they have wiped out a strong curlew and lapwing population, now the rspb are looking for our help to control greys and magpies to help rebuild them but they dont acknowledge the harm the buzzards are doing
At the end, I love to see a dog doing it's job. Makes a happy dog.
Thanks Silent so do i
The best 10.09 minutes of video on RUclips for sure! Awesome shooting and your lab is adorable, like you say they are your best mate. Really enjoying all your vids and can't wait for the next one already! Thank you for sharing such great footage.
Thanks a lot Geoff, ya know ime know computer whizz kidd and not very good at editing and some times i put these vids together and think naaa don,t bother with this one but comments like this i am glad i did, cheers mate
Great to see you back out in the field Simon and Jack of course. These are by far my favourite video's of yours and I hope you won't keep us waiting too long for the next installment. 👍
Thanks Jim.
You shoot really well especially with those light rounds in all of that swirly wind and such small targets, i am honestly impressed. cheers mike
Thanks a lot Mike much appreciated.
Great shooting and that’s a very handsome dog you have there !!!
Thanks again Thomas
The old boy loved those retrieves I can see what ever you are shooting he loves to be with you Simon, loved the video more please.
Cheers Keith i will have another air rifle one may be next week
Great shooting and a wonderful companion, what more can you ask for.
Thanks a lot Wiggy
Super as usual, thanks mate, I have up until yesterday got 24 in my Larsen!
Thanks Bobby , brilliant work with the Larsen trap as well
I assume you're profiting from your invested time here. I could literally do this for a living. Absolute bliss. The hell with turning wrenches.
I am now Master Yoda but i also have to put up with some of the idots in life as well which makes me wonder at times
Some very good shots you made there, well done and good viewing, thanks for sharing.
Cheers SB
Wow , just catching up on some of your passed vids , amazing accuracy , and calculations , man’s best friend , way better than the majority of the human race , sadly 👏👏
Edinburgh is full of Magpies, great shooting video and your mate judging by his tail still loves being out with you 👏👍
Cheers David he sure is,,,
Simon6ppc what’s the Ammo you are using? Factory or reloaded? Thanks
@@pedrojacome4106 i re load pal quite a few different bullets
Excellent rifle with some great shots.
Thanks a lot Lee
Great shooting Simon, people don't realize the importance of keeping corvids under control, I remember way back going to visit my dads new job at a stately home in Surrey where there had been no control for 10 years, and there was no song birds singing at all! 6 months later we had reduced the numbers to a more tolerable level and the song birds returned,.
It was quite gratifying to hear the locals gossiping which birds had returned to their gardens after such a long absence!
Keep up the good work! ;)
Thanks a lot pal you are right in every way ,i do get the odd idiot thinking ime killing for fun if only they knew,,
You didn’t miss, it moved at the wrong moment. Beautiful place thank you for sharing it.
Lol thanks Andy.

Imagine just chilling, trying to find some eats with your pal, and all of a sudden he explodes! 😱☠️🤣
Be handy if he was getting on your nerves
Sounds like ww1
Great looking Lab. I had to put mine down 1 year ago. He had been blind for the last year, diabetes.
Still loved to go for car rides right up to the end. I'm sure you don't have to ask him twice if he wants to go.
Sorry to hear that North and thanks
As always, some of the best content on You Tube. Great to see Jack when he was not so stiff. Merry Christmas..........
Cheers pal much appreciated.
Great video, as usual Simon. Your ethics and respect are unquestionable. Keep em coming mate.
Thanks a lot Geraldo i like to think so
remembre Mao & the time he kill all China birds.... you'r not so mentale gréât but... Poor on all
Lovely old dog, keeping him useful makes him happy. Hugs and some love from me.
Iv subscribed.
Thanks Harry i will do
Well Mr. Simon you really have me hooked. As I watch and see how you handle your spent brass, well to me it says a lot! I have a nice NIB 223 bench gun that I'm going to part with and will either build a platform for vermin or maybe buy something. Your posts are relaxing, enjoyable as as I said on another post ARTFUL!
Thanks Tex, ye i to am thinking of an 8 twist 22.250 if i swap this 223 but the 223 as yet is so good its a shame to swap it.
Good shooting again simon on form today take out as many as u can have a good day and keep safe.
Thank you Toni.
Excellent marksmanship there.
Thanks Stephen,
Using nettles for camouflage demonstrates a degree of commitment!
cheers Mate or may be simple Simon lol
lol cheers mate
hey Simon, my old chocolate lab responded brilliantly to CBDs, its like he was a pup again until his last days. great shooting as always. You have really inspired me to up my game and really start dialing in my shots instead of the holdover. nothing beats the math.
Thanks Neil ye once you learn how to dial the turrets correctly it is like when you watched the films as a child lol, if you need any advice you know where i am pal..
Crow's here in Australia, like we're you are a real problem... As for Magpies not so much only they attack people in the breeding season in the city/metro areas....
Seeing your black Labrador reminds me of my late grandfather, he had a golden Labrador as a gun dog when he went duck shooting her name was suzie... Beautiful well trained dog... Fond memories!... R 🇦🇺
Thanks Robbie the crows here as you know are hard work the magpies also but if i had to pick the worst one it would be the crow
I have been shooting all my life ! Military and civilian but I only wish I could be as good as you ! Love your best Buddy! Thank you for the great videos! God Bless
Thank you Slinger much appreciated.
Lovely looking Lab, oh and good shooting too!
Thanks Turner
Good 223 work brilliant shots especially the first crow. Good stuff
Thanks Johnny
Nice shooting,,, the Magpies are a tough target to hit,, small body!! Lots of them here in Saskatchewan, may have to update my equipment. Thanks for making the video!!
Thanks a lot Rob.
you got the most useful spotter in the world!!!
very nice vide mate, thanks for sharing!
Thanks ever so much pal
Keep up the good work, 😊🤝
Thank you, I will
Love your best pal amazing shooting as well
Thanks Vin.
I wonder if the dog flinches at all when the shot is fired. He looks like such a good friend.
He's an old gun dog Tim so is trained to sit and stay when a shot is fired so is bang on...
I’m old and stiff too Simon, like your best mate, I’m still worth keeping around. Great video.
Thank again Roy Boy lol....
Brilliant video again, thank you. I’v been using the Nsa slugs in my mk1 rapid with great success. I’d be interested in seeing more on your centrefire set up mate
Thanks Matt i am gonna do a gear review soon
in 1964, Corey Ford wrote The Road to Tinkhamtown for Field and Stream Magazine. This is what he wrote about his dog that had passed:
"... But he wasn’t alone, not with Cider. He had the old dog curled on the floor by the stove, his claws scratching the linoleum as he chased a bird in a dream. He wasn’t alone when he heard that. They were always together. There was a closeness between them that he did not feel for anyone else, his wife, his son, or even Doc. They could talk without words, and they could always find each other in the woods. He was lost without him. Cider was the kindest person he had ever known."
Ye thanks Tim, my lab is called Jack and hes been a cracking gun dog its a shame i can,t show you how good he really was when he was 5 picking up Pheasants and Grouse and such
Dogs have all the best character traits that only some people have. They are totally loyal and love unconditionally.
look forward to your postings great as always thanks
Thanks a lot Rata
Brilliant absolutely brilliant shots, if we ever get attacked by zombies I'm by your side pal
lol cheers pal the framer always says if theres a war he deff wants to be on my side lol
Good film and good shooting, well explained
Thanks pal
Great shooting simon I've got to get out and check the zero on my new reloads using the thermal scope.
Keep up the good work 👍
Love the dog like mine old but still proves she can be young at times 🐶
Thanks a lot Justin
Excellent, and what a great ol' Dog, is Jack!
Thank you Reg.
A Decoy! I love it.
Cheers pal.
Good video! Your usual impressive shooting, plus some very nice weather on the moor
Thanks Stefano
Some fabulous shooting. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers mate
Bloody great job! Thank you
Glad you liked it!
Haha even the dog holds his breath before the shot.
Well ye
Damn mate that was bang on & here im cant even throw a paper in a bin from a meter away
Lol cheers mate
Get a black lab by your side - Makes all the difference.
Try shooting instead of throwing :-)
more great shooting simon, and 2 nice retrives at the end 👍
Thanks a lot David
1:53 you where only supposed to blow the blooming wings off 😂
ye some times a bullet does get carried away but this is pest control i suppose
@@simon6ppc246 i assume your familiar with the term clean kill. lol on the plus side, saves the kestrels some work i suppose. portioning out the meat is a lot eseyer when the hard bit has already been done.
Sad to see the arthritis at work in the dog's rear quarters. I had a superb gun & retrieving Lab, genuine tan, and it almost broke my spirit to see him struggle to retrieve possums and rabbits - but he wasn't going to call it quits.
Ye pal bad news for me to as he has been a cracking dog and i mean really good.
Excellent video me olde 👍
Cheers Lee...
NIce shooting, love the dog too.
Thanks a lot Troy
Jack is a beautiful dog.
Thanks pal ye he sure is.
Great video - Well done !
Thanks a lot Giles
Sako Rifles are the best value for money Rifle bar none.
Sure are mike and my videos kind of prove it..
Jacks got the comfortable spot and you've got the nettles haha
😂 That's the kind person i am Nigel.
Good job, trouble is no bugger does it in the towns and cities !
Thanks mate
Amazing marksmanship the Si. Great video well done. I’m gonna have to try some slugs myself.
Thanks a lot Robin, ye pal do try them the H/Ns especially ive not had much joy with any of the others
One of the best dogs we ever had was a black lab called shot..did exactly what you said and never left a bird. And he was also soft as shite, bless him x
Ye i to had another black lab called Jack he was a cracker also, they just don't live long enough in my eyes.
Nice stuff sir. Happy new year to you n yours.
Same to you! my Friend
excellent accuracy man!!! congrats
Thanks pal!
You are a high tech shooter!!!!! I'm impressed
1:16
Thanks again mate
Great video as always, nice to see the Rapid earning it's keep 👍
Thanks Colin ye i still have the Rapid its been brilliant.
That weapon packs quite a punch
Thanks Tony.
Ah, it's good to see a Retriever doing the job the breed is meant for. :)
Thanks mate
Labrador
Good pup....gotta love a good lab.
Thanks CD
Nice shooting Simon. Look forward to the next one. :-)
Thanks a lot Donald

Lol thanks a lot Peter
Good job you and best mate.!!👍👍
Thanks Mary
Just brilliant. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks again mate
Excellent shooting and superb work on the camera
Thanks Kevin.
It's a pity, "the black and white Eurasian magpie is widely considered one of the most intelligent animals in the world and one of only a few non-mammal species able to recognize itself in a mirror test.", but I can understand why. Great shooting skills and they don't suffer.
Thanks a lot mate, believe it or not i do love animals but over the years i have seen the damage these birds do on our moors to the new born lambs, song birds and rare nesting birds and thanks again for under standing
Always good to have a best mate!
Most definitely!
a) nobody can stand them damn nettles! b) either there is a steam engine just behind you or your ol pal is close at hand.
Lol cheers Phil.
Well done.
Thanks Rick..
Jack is getting like my 14 year old panting and heartbeat rapid. Aww feel bad about the greatest spotter, companion, and retriever.
Ye its a shame Darrel he is nothing like the dog he used to be
Absolutely superb shooting .all the best
Thanks Phil.
Top gun there pal total respect. 👍👍👍
Thanks Ian
Reminds me of the 'watcha got there, bud?' guy who shoots hogs at night. Chirp at the fox - boom.
lol
Very nice job my friend 👌
Thank you! Cheers!
You can fare see the enjoyment on your buddies face knowing he is part of the team👍😷👍 The editing is equal standard to the shooting, a 'real enjoyment' to watch. 👍😷👍
Thanks Andrew you must see my next video i am doing as my spotter makes me laff how he's watching the camera then me as if to say come on shoot, lol
@@simon6ppc246 Oh I've got to watch that lol. Your channel is excellent and wouldn't be the same without him. His face when he see's a crow or magpie is so funny, I can see him thinking... "Yep you've buggered it mate"! Lol I'll keep my eye's open for the next one thanks for the heads up 👍😷👍
Brilliant video great to watch. This is just what I do in my spare time but with a couple or 3 differences. I ether use my semi custom sako 75 in 6mm ppc . Or my akley improved 22250 and 3 black cockers spaniels.
Brilliant Robert i to have a sako 75 in 6ppc its probably been the best rifle i have ever owned in my life,,
@@simon6ppc246 your right I love my Sako . It would be nice to see a video of you shooting it . There isn't much on you tube with the 6 ppc
My last video last week Robert i actually shoot a fox with it but i have thought of putting a scope back on it and using it back on the vermin again will see..i send a 58 Vmax in it around 3500 ftps its just brilliant
@@simon6ppc246 that's brilliant I will have to find that on you tube. It is just the best calibre. Iv been using Nosler silvertip 55gn at around 3450fps . But im thinking of trying 70gn and N133 power . My Ackley 22250 is a little bit nut 😵 4100 with a 50gn foxes and crows love it 😉
