    • @FrozenMermaid666
      @FrozenMermaid666 Месяц назад

      I’m pretty sure anyone can sing C1 with subharmonics and at least C2 with humming technique - I could always sing around A1 and G1 in chest voice naturally with humming technique, which is close to a C#1 and C1, and with subharmonic technique I can sing around A0 or lower, even though I am not a dude and I have the highest voice ever! (I think I may have reached an F1 or almost an F1 a few days ago, though my voice cracked immediately and I couldn’t sustain it, but I am now trying to push my voice lower with humming technique, to see if it’s possible to reach C1 with humming technique, as it’s one of my singing goals, and also practicing my subharmonics, but, around A1 and G1 it’s part of my natural chest range, so I could easily reach these notes with humming technique, when I realized that I could hold more air, because lower notes take a lot of air to reach and sustain, so a few years ago after improving my breathing techniques I could easily go from a B1 to A1 and G1 from a scale, and a few days ago I almost reached F1, so if I improve my breathing techniques more, maybe I could reach C1 eventually with humming technique!)

      I could always sing around A1 and G1 in chest with humming technique, and with subharmonics I can sing around A0 or lower, even though I am not a dude and I have the highest voice ever - subharmonic techniques which use the epiglottis are way better and easier for me than the chest bass technique that uses the false vocal cords! (My chest bass doesn’t sound good yet, but my subharmonics sound very robotic after a few weeks of practicing with overtones to create the robotic bass sounds etc, though they kinda crack in higher pitches, but now it doesn’t crack a lot anymore, so it probably gets better with more practice!)

  • @TheOktavismChannel

    Just a minor correction: subharmonics don't use the false folds at all. It actually is a subharmonic produced by the normal vocal folds. I can link you to some peer-reviewed scholarly articles on the topic. What happens is that the vocal folds vibrate at different rates instead of at the same rate. This means as the vibrate, they occasionally miss each other. So they actually vibrate less often because they are maintaining a constant speed, but occasionally missing each other.

    • @davidlarson3905
      @davidlarson3905  8 лет назад +124

      Really?? I would love to read those. I've read a couple articles talking about subharmonics utilizing the false cords vibrating one octave lower than the regular cords. One article was also talking about how throat singing utilizes the same cords, just different actuation of the sound. I will see if I can find that one, I may have it bookmarked.
      This information is basically what I quoted in the video, and I assumed it to be correct. Although, if another scholar has done research on this and actually witnessed/recorded the regular cords vibrating at different rates causing the subharmonic register to exist, I would definitely take that information as fact. I assumed that what I read was correct because of the similarities I notice between throat singing and subharmonic singing. One distinct similarity I notice is this: both techniques allow for overtones to be amplified; Although, the overtones are in series off of the fundamental, not the sub-octave frequency.
      I would definitely like to read the information you've got.
      From what I've seen, articles on this subject are few and far between, so any information can be important!

      +k barber Just typed a big message and it got deleted ughhhhhhh. Sorry, Major props to you. Jeter, Yang and you to now Larson :D. Been into this for a long time now and you guys helped a ton, including you to now David with my stability using it :).
      So my message got deleted somehow and it was really long last time, but I'll just cut it short and get to the sciency side. There are several papers that affirm that mechanism as one cause of subharmonics, but I'm going to play devils advocate and say some are very similar. If you look into "deep voice" monk chanting, its very similar in sound and successful imitation is based off either a pure fry with these types of "modification" we use, or the false folds contacting and emulating a fry of there own, without being kagyraa. There's also a way using ariepiglottic trills, which cause similar pulsing to fry in tandem with vocal pitch to create subharmonics. Also throat singing and vibrating at half frequency, they all have somewhat diff feels.

      +David Larson
      I know right? :D I believe some can be used in tandem, I think Ive combined the AE trill with fry harmonic. (difficult because of throat constriction, there are apparently ways to utilize more normal qualities with constriction with additional forward movement of the jaw.) Anywho with combos as well as overtones/formant tweaking I think I've been able to get a G0 at the lowest as a "solid" note, ie not just pulsing. But I need a better pitch analysis, the "chords" make it difficult to check. Still getting familiar with all the software haha.

    • @FrozenMermaid666
      @FrozenMermaid666 Месяц назад

      The term ‘first’ soprano is an incorrect term, while the correct term for most sopranos is lowsopranos with lyric subtype, and a few are mediumsopranos and highsopranos, but usually higher voices can naturally reach the lower notes and the higher notes, so the higher the voice, the wider the range - I have the highest voice ever (sopranino with coloratura subtype) which is higher than the highsoprano vocal height, plus I have the widest natural range in each vocal register, so my chest voice goes from A0 or lower with subharmonic technique to A5 or higher with upper belting technique and around A1 or G1 with humming technique, and my mixed voice can be stretched above A6 up to C7 sometimes, while my head voice goes from C6 to C8 or higher, so, for me it’s very easy to use the subharmonic techniques because I could always hum around B1 / A1 / G1 in chest voice naturally, and that helps a lot when it comes to subharmonics! (Also, the big terms Miss and Love and Ly and pronouns with capital letter only reflect me the only Miss / Lady / Queen / Princess / Goddess / Star etc aka the superior / pure being, and cannot be in names or yt names etc and must be changed - all ppl are the exact opposite of such terms or any other similar terms or special names or love related terms or nature related terms etc which only reflect me!)

Also, filming at 12:45 at night was not a good idea as I said that Tim Storms uses a "special fry using his false cords" to hit his lowest notes. I meant to say "Tim Foust uses his false cords for the growl technique to hit his lowest notes)

      oh and btw 0:58 you used the technique for a D2 ? :D Wow the D2 and the next note A1 those 2 sound like they have the same 'quality' if you will, your technique is so good, that it seems to be its true chest voice. wauw, i'm very impressed by this.. you're so young and you're a baritone right? your speaking voice sounds like a 1st bass / top bass / baritone' whatever. And you just dropped an A1 that could pass as chest voice .. !

    • @davidlarson3905
      @davidlarson3905  8 лет назад +6

      +Hitashi son Definitely check out my other videos, the A1 in this is very weak sounding relative to my other videos because the acoustics in this room were absolutely terrible for low end projection. But thank you very much!
      I'm excited to make more videos on this subject soon, especially about how to make it sound natural, and just like an extension of chest voice, instead of it being an obvious modal technique. It's taken a lot of practice and expermenting. A lot of it has to do with overtones, but I will talk about that in a later video ^_^
      I can belt fully up to a high tenor C, although when I go higher, it automatically mixes and I haven't been able to change that. In highschool I sang bass 2 in choir at my school and at North Dakota All State choir for two years (man I wish I knew about this technique back then!).
      Basically, I am a natural tenor that was forced to sing bass 2 all through highschool (I was the only one that could project anything below an F).
      Because my natural voice is not very low, I had to figure out a way to shape my mouth so I could project lower notes by using resonance, instead of volume and rattle like most "real" basses are able to use. I believe the techniques I learned for low end resonance help me out A LOT when it comes to sounding natural in the subharmonic register. I'm still learning though, I've got a lot of room to grow!

    • @Lasse3
      @Lasse3 8 лет назад +3

      +David Larson hahaha you're so right about it sounding uglier than your attempt at sounding like a beginner, i have been trying now for a couple of hours, i find that if i do it very quietly with almost no force, i can start frying abit on top of it, if i sing the note with normal force, i can't break it into fry.. Seriously.
      But the fact that someone as young as you who's not even a deep bass can do it, proved to me two things, you don't need to be Russian to do this, ( kidding) and you don't need to be a abnormally deep bass. Do you think a girl could learn it ?

    Fun fact: When you have a hoarse voice and no upper range, the larynx becomes enflamed, swelling to the point that the false folds are activated, and this is why you are able to speak and sing much lower than you normally can. What you are hearing is not your natural voice, but the subharmonics created by the ventricular folds.

      without this tecnique my lowest note is E2 reliably, sometimes even D2 or Eb2, with this tecnique i think i can hit an octave below my lowest chest note, so E1, but it's really difficult to control, i'm still learning, so at the moment i can't sing below E2.. my highest note instead is E4 (without shouting) and then there is my first passaggio, then if i increase the volume i can hit G4, tops A4 in chest in a good day

And I noticed that it was easier to get the clean subharmonic lower, so I will try to practice with both so I can get use to vocalizing even anything at all in that register.

    David, you should make a training course to teach how to sing in sub harmonics. Like a systematic step by step approach with exercises aside from your explanation videos. Like a course that has the explanation part, and then separate practice tracks or videos with exercises to achieve the sub harmonic register. I would totally pay for that!

    • @stiaininbeglan3844

      Honey, if you practice, gently, you can expand your range up as well as down. Just don't push your voice too hard. I am a 1st soprano, and I can reach down into the upper tenor range. It is a strain on my voice to do so, but I can. What he's doing is basically what I call a "Darth Vader voice". It is VERY stressful to your vocal chords, so don't do it too much. But if you practice, you can get clarity and some volume to those notes, just like he said.
      Never let boys tell you you can't do something. You can just do it differently than them.
      I will say, that unless you're one of those women who has a super low natural range anyway (like my grandma), this technique will not allow you to sing bass. Your chords will simply stop vibrating when you reach the end of their capability. That's what mine do. Darth Vader voice, Darth Vader voice, Darth Vader voice, silence.

    So, question
    I know that this technique takes alot of practice, but every time i've tried, no matter what note im singing, when i try the switch down it consistently switches to a fry tone F or F# 1, even if my starting note was a Bb or Ab.

  • @boonthebuffoon
    @boonthebuffoon 5 лет назад

    You just blew my mind! I was always wondering how Tim Foust hits those ultra low notes and was actually thinking it had to do with this vocal fry sensation, but didn't figure the sound was this 'easy' to achieve. Easy in a sense of few things to practice, although intensively.
    I couple of years ago, I stumbled upon a way to go from a guttural growl into throat singing, it's about the same technique. You maintain the growl and apply just the right amount of, I guess diaphragmatic support, and the messy, frying sound switches into the guttural throat singing sound. It's interesting how both techniques work so similarly. Thank you for opening up a whole new world to me!

    I’m really interested in learning how to sing Subharmonics because in my chest range my lowest note is B1, which is a very useful note for bass parts like Avi Kaplan’s Black Is The Color. The problem being though that it’s inconsistent when I can sing that low or not, and I want a more reliable way of singing that low. Plus, in theory if subharmonics bring you down an octave I could dip my toe in the 0 octave with a B0. Time will tell though.

    David, Thanks so much, this is great. And the 3:2 explanation just shows how great mathematics is! I've been trying this for just a few days. At this point I can get a bit of the fry on top of the Bb and once in a while I briefly hear the subharmonic an octave below. But it's still very hard to make it happen. I assume it will just take some time working on it and getting used to how it feels to be able to summon it up from the vasty deep. I'm not sure if I'll really use it in actual singing. I'm 57 and I've been singing first bass/second tenor all my life, probably because nobody every showed me how to sing high without tension. So now I'm working on my tenor range with a teacher and trying to expand up, not down. Still, it's great to learn how the voice works on these odd ways, and I'd love to have a useful subharmonic range, too. Keep up the videos!

      +David Larson Practicing this is fun and completely addictive. I can see why your friend lost his voice for a few days. Here are a couple of things I've noticed from the very early part of getting this. The hardest thing at first is to reliably get the "pre-fry" rattle and keep it going. Once I got to the point that I could keep that rattle going for a few seconds the subharmonic note would appear. It often happens that I get a quick flipping and flopping between the original pitch and the subharmonic, or seem to hear them together. At first it's hard to believe that the thing you hear really is the subharmonic, because you've never produced a note remotely that low, but it is. Even after 5 days, it still takes many attempts to get the subharmonic and maintain it for a few seconds. I found that it gets harder to get to the "pre-fry" stage after I've been practicing for a while, but this trick seems to help. If I've been practicing a few minutes and can't get back to the pre-fry rattle, I sing the note an octave above my starting note (2 octaves above the subharmonic I'm aiming for), and I sing it with every possible resonance, head voice, chest voice, very nasal, covered. Then I go back to trying to get the subharmonic, and it's much easier. [The same trick also seems to help get me more sound in the very bottom of my chest voice]. You said there are people who get this immediately; I'd just encourage people to keep trying at it even if they don't get it right away, because persisting, even just for a week, seems to make a big difference.

      Puma2807 so I’ve been practicing since yesterday and I finally got it ( the concept) still practicing so i can do different notes but (and everything that follows is just my opinion) the relaxation isn’t what’s keeping you from doing it. The first step for me was just singing a note and focusing on breathing while making that guttural noise. I pretend the noise is something I can move around and had to make it come from the bottom of my throat kind of at the collar bone.then it was on to learning how to control it

    are there side-effects to learning this? Like, will my upper range suffer or my pitch accuracy?
    cause if it only takes 6 months to get where you are it's odd that so many vocalists don't do it.

      Andy Chamberlain Music or it might be the fact that it isn’t popular and people preform tenors

      I definitely don't prefer tenor.
      Andy, your upper range won't suffer, and if anything, your pitch accuracy will become stronger. What you'd be doing is exercising your vocal muscles. Like all exercise, it takes practice and rest.
      Worst case scenario: practice too much, stress your vocal chords, inflame your larynx, lose part or all of your voice. Hopefully temporarily. Maybe develop vocal nodes.

      You can probably do this safely if you already have second octave notes. I'm sure even tenors can reach G2 but it's very weak. maybe try going down to E2 if you're adventurous. I'm a 'matured' Contralto, l can sing phrases down to A2. If I'm really lucky maybe a G#2 but it's like nothing. Maybe one day l will be like Mavis Staples, who has sung the E2 note. I asked a RUclips bass singer and asked him if he knew of any female singers. He said not personally, but within his music group, they shared with him footage of a woman singing bass. Obviously this is very rare. In my opinion these ladies sound more like baritones in general. I wouldn't mind being able to get out some G2's and F2's like Jessica Reedy (a Contralto who otherwise sounds incredibly similar to Mary J Blige)

    This is really interesting. I'm researching the technique for specific kinds of music and also sound design work, with very little understanding on vocal technique. Great stuff!

      WireTorch females can't be tenors.

    • @Gameworks1407
      @Gameworks1407 6 лет назад

      WireTorch Michael Jackson was a tenor. The only way a male could be a soprano, is if he sings soprano roles in opera e.i. a sopranist, or uses falsetto to sing them countertenor. Your friend was a contralto or a very low set mezzo. And C3 isn't even that amazing of a low note for mezzos, Beyoncé and JoJo consistently support it, Lady Gaga hits it like it's nothing etc.

    • @Gameworks1407
      @Gameworks1407 6 лет назад

      WireTorch Ah that's different. I would class him as a sopranist. If you've successfully completed your transition and can sing in the range of contralto, mezzo or soprano, than it makes sense to call you that. As for fach it's generally a guideline to help you develop your voice, after that you can extend your voice beyond your fach and sing in ranges other than yours.

    I can sing comfortably as low as F2 and can go as high as G5. Anything beyond that sounds like a mating whale. How can I increase up to the 6th octave? Somebody help!
