Allosaurus is so underrated in the media, never seen a live action movie with it. Even though they have found several times more Allos than T-Rex skeletons.
It was in the Lost World movie as a villain. But you are right, it should get more air time, I think plenty of dinosaurs deserve some or more air time in either documentaries or movies.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate how *good* this allosaurus looks? I mean I know a lot of stuff in this documentary is outdated now but this allosaurus reconstruction is still the best I've seen in any documentary, movie, or video game.
I don't know that it's drastically outdated, still only about a decade old vs. WWD and When Dinosaurs Roamed America which are both 20+ and definitely a ways more outdated in comparison
Honestly I'm just glad that Camptosaurus had some screen time. It was one of the most abundant dinosaurs of the Jurassic period, but it's not well known in pop culture due to it's mundane looks. The poor thing is overlooked by the general public because of all the other famous dinosaurs from its time period. Dinosaurs like Stegosaurus, Apatosaurus and Allosaurus overshadow Camptosaurus all the time.
Let's be real here... Tiger, Rhino or Cow. Allosaurus, Stegosaurus or Camptosaurus. It's obvious why, it's the same as the current modern day animals. I preer chickens over tigers and dolphins and I think Camptosaurus is cute. ;v; It's nice seeing the little dinosaurs, and big dinosaurs are cool too. Not everyone is like that
There are odd exceptions of course, but let's be honest here... Would the majority of people want to see some medium sized dinosaur that has no extraordinary feature, nor is it scary. There is no draw to it, where as Allosaurus for example, is fast, brutal and scary. It also doesn't help that the graphic designers always put mundane and bland colours on the "boring" dinosaurs but vibrant and loud colours on the "exciting" dinosaurs.

@J The reason why (in my opinion) Allosaurus is more interesting, is the fact that it didn’t have a strong bite force, instead it used its head like an axe. Tyrannosaurus however, had a simple case of a powerful bite force. I think how Allosaurus killed is one of the reasons I’m fascinated by it.
We are doubting Allosaurus’ axe-like usability because of the idea of it only being able to engage with the top of its skull, or it will smash the bottom part of the skull on the bones. Allosaurus would likely use its 79 degree gape to use it on much meatier sides as join its teeth for multiple rips, while also using its forelimbs and maybe toe claws. I personally like both animals. But, I find Tyrannosaurus more interest not just because of the 6 ton bone crushing bite, but also because it was an expert ambush predator that used its muscular, thick body to act as a fighting predator, too.
A fun fact: We live closer in time to the Tyrannosaurus rex than it did to the Allosaurus. T-Rex lived 66 million years ago, while Allosaurus went extinct 80 million years before the T-Rex came along. Allosaurus was a fossil in the ground when T-Rex was walking the earth. That really puts things into prospective for how massive a time span the dinosaurs were around.

I remember watching this YEARS ago and the fact that I remembered it and came back to design an optimal allosaur enclosure just shows that this show was AWESOME. Props to BBC for making this legend. Some points even still hold up today like the spino being mostly aquatic.
The majority of Allosaurus paratype specimens are 9 meters in length based on measuring Scott Hartman's diagrams. The largest specimen is assigned to Epanterias amplexus, however, there are no valid diagnostic differences between Allosaurus fragilis and Epanterias amplexus. The only obvious difference is the size difference (9-10 meters for A. fragilis and 11-12 meters for E. amplexus). "Epanterias" is likely just a large individual of A. fragilis. On the other hand, Saurophaganax maximus varies from A. fragilis in chevron and vertebrae morphology (Saurophaganax supposedly has a more robust centra and diapophyses, and the chevrons superficially resemble knives, hence their referral as "meat-chopper chevrons"). It's unlikely that Epanterias amplexus is a valid distinction from Allosaurus fragilis, but the possibility is open for Saurophaganax maximus. The "head-as an-axe" adaptation in Allosaurus is described by Bakker as a departure from earlier and more conservative Jurassic Morrison Formation theropod dinosaurs (E.G Ceratosaurus, Megalosaurus, Torvosaurus). The paroccipital process in Tyrannosaurines and basal Megalosauroids and Ceratosaurians is augmented laterally (which is consistent with prey restraint and such) but in Allosaurus is augmented dorsoventrally, allowing for more efficient up-and-down movement of the craniocervical section (Bakker RT et al. 1998). The attachment point for M. longissimus capitis superficiallis is relatively low and is also augmented dorsoventrally (Snively et al. 2013), and the animal's artiomandibular joint and occiput allow it to gape its jaws at roughly 90 degrees. This adaptation is consistent with attacking prey an order of magnitude larger than the predator itself and is referred to by Bakker as "Brontophagy". The paroccipital process is also augmented dorsoventrally in the related Carcharodontosaurids (particularly Acrocanthosaurus and Giganotosaurus) but not to the same degree of extremity as Allosaurus. It's possible that Carcharodontosaurids sacrificed a bit of the paroccipital strength in exchange for more cutting efficient teeth, which can severe muscle and other layers of soft tissue with minimal effort. The muscular augmentation in the head and neck of Allosaurus is consistent with axe-style biting and also pull-feeding (which the program didn't mention). See Bakker RT (1998) for craniodental mechanics and Snively et al. 2013 for the analysis on M. Longissimus capitis superficiallis.
Luigi Gaskell While I do agree with you on the placement of AMNH 5767 within the Allosaurus genus, I have some doubts on it being a large individual of A. fragilis. Though the specimen shows no autapomorphies, it is about 3 million years younger than other A. fragilis specimens (Tithonian age). Also, the famous `Big Al´ skeleton, although a subadult with a length of around 7.5 meters, is estimated to be 87% the size of a fully grown individual (Rebecca R. Hanna 1999), meaning that an adult would be about 9 meters long. However, of course, this is just my opinion, and I may be wrong. Also, thank you for your comments. Though relatively recent, Planet Dinosaur already has some inaccuracies, and it's good to have someone clearing them up for others. I suggest you comment on the BBC's Walking With Dinosaurs videos too, since they are causing some misconceptions too.

I wouldn’t say longer but okay, also it’s because people prefer dinosaurs with names that sound cool to the public, Saurph looks cool but alike deinocheirus it’s name keeps it in the depths of paleontology, prehistoric planet is representing both popular and uncommon dinosaurs so we may see it in prehistoric planet sometime.
I believe Saurophaganax was actually longer than Tyrannosaurus, it just didn't weigh anywhere near the same as it was built for speed like Allo, I THINK.
Thanks to The Ballad of Big Al, Jurassic Fight Club (The Bloodiest Battle) and this series, Allosaurus fragilis has become my favorite Jurassic theropod! It was really "the lion of the Jurassic"! Thanks for posting it, BBC! GROOOOOOOAAAAAAAAR!!!
I love the Allosaurus. It's ability to be large but lean and agile. He isn't a specialist like the T rex. It's a more Jack of all trades, my favorite classes in games. He truely is the lion of the Jurassic.
Much of what you see on these dinosaurs is speculation. Just because it had a head that could withstand blows Doesn't mean that it chopped like an ax. Pretty awesome dinosaur though

Luke Hill Did you see the latest development on velicoraptors? They were like hyper aggressive birds with teeth. Put THAT in a movie! I'd watch the crap out of it haha.
Planet Dinosaur remains in my opinion the greatest Dinosaur Documentary ever made, the perfect blend of epic Dinosaur Cinematography and interesting Palaeontology.
Its age does show a lot with the outdated science, like the long-legged Spinosaurus model, Sinornithosaurus having a venomous bite, and the Allosaurus swinging its head down on prey like a hatchet. I wouldn't say it's the best dinosaur documentary. I'd say Prehistoric Planet is better, partly because the CGI and animal designs are as good as they can get, but mainly because most of it focuses on multiple aspects of life. Not all of it focuses on just predator-prey relationships, there's also courtship, symbiosis, child rearing, power struggles, etc.
Glad you showed an accurate hunt 11 years ago. At that time, foolish people use to think Allosaurus or any theropod can easily single handedly hunt down adult stegosaurus and giant sauropods and all such strong and highly defensive herbivore.
The bite force of Allosaurus is actually 3 times that of a lions. The study has been reexamined and new computer simulations have been run as a result. Allosaurus had a roughly 2 ton bite force which is still a fraction of the 6 to 7 ton bite force of Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Saurophaganax is the most underrated dinosaur ever. It's an allosaur longer than Tyrannosaurus and no one knows about it. That's a shame.
yee
I wouldn’t say longer but okay, also it’s because people prefer dinosaurs with names that sound cool to the public, Saurph looks cool but alike deinocheirus it’s name keeps it in the depths of paleontology, prehistoric planet is representing both popular and uncommon dinosaurs so we may see it in prehistoric planet sometime.
I believe Saurophaganax was actually longer than Tyrannosaurus, it just didn't weigh anywhere near the same as it was built for speed like Allo, I THINK.
Saurophaganax is such an awesome name too
I really hope to see him in third season of prehistorical planet
3:43 Damn that dinosaur dropped faster than a family guy character getting knocked over
After a long time. I’m happy that youtube randomly showed this video ❤😊
1:56 that zoom just made me laugh
My favorite Dinosaur from now on... Allosaurus
Marcos Pinheiro lions SUCK!!
Titanoboa 6 tails yeah they suck like u dumbass
It’s my favorite Dino
@@titanoboa6powers495 no!
You know what TheGamingBeaver is right never trust a allosaur
LOL. I used to watch that channel when I was 9-10. Maybe I should come back to it.
Used its top jaw like an axe, huh? That's interesting.
No, probably just ripped chunks of flesh off. No living animal uses its skull like a Tomahawk Chop:
Allo: back bite
Camptosarus:OW AAAAAA **DIES**
I love the Allosaurus. It's ability to be large but lean and agile. He isn't a specialist like the T rex. It's a more Jack of all trades, my favorite classes in games. He truely is the lion of the Jurassic.
^^]
Sorophagonax:hold my sauropod head.
3:46 ----- Camptosaurus: HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN TO ME? I'VE MADE MY MISTAKES! GOT NOWHERE TO GO! THE DAY GOES ON AS I'M FADING AWAY!
saurophaganax:(literally bites his head off then goes back to sleep)
Credits to the camera man for waiting 65 million years no wonder he’s immortal
I love allosaurus it’s such a cool and unique dinosaur with its method of hunting is amazing and the fact that they can hunt in packs is amazing
Much of what you see on these dinosaurs is speculation. Just because it had a head that could withstand blows Doesn't mean that it chopped like an ax. Pretty awesome dinosaur though
There's no evidence that they hunted in packs.
It didn’t actually use a hatchet bite, no idea why it was even proposed as a method of hunting because it’s very inefficient
Respect to the people that went back in time to get this footage and respect to that Camtosaurus' acting
This is why Allosaurus is one of my favorite dinosaurs
You should've added the part with Saurophaganax.
That was only media appearance.
Yeah you're right
@@bkjeong4302 _Dinosaur King wants to know your location._
My favorite dinosaur.
***** I was unaware of that. Thank you.
***** TheBigSuegroski you can actually get a highly accurate scaled version which is much smaller and comes with a wooden base along with a metal plaque! The full skeleton or the skull alone from www.dinostoreus.com :D
Luke Hill Did you see the latest development on velicoraptors? They were like hyper aggressive birds with teeth. Put THAT in a movie! I'd watch the crap out of it haha.

1 second later: “Oh hewo thewe!”
.1 seconds later: *WHAT DA FU-*
I don’t have to run faster than the Allosaurus, I just have to run faster than you.
In my opinion Walking With Dinosaurs is the best.
Its not the bite,it's the force of the bite when it kills.
Henry Masson so it is the bite.
Allossauro my favorit dinosaur :D
usuario do youtube same
Me too
My too and eu sou br.
It's my second favourite carnivore.
I used to watch this when I was a kid, and I never realized how graphic it actually was XD I was just a innocent 5 year old that loved dinosaurs XD
Allosaurus, my favourite of all the dinosaurs.
3:03 You after your mother finds out that you repeated the year

I love these dinosaur facts, it makes me so curious which then again makes me want to learn more

The quality of cgi in this documentary is astonishing to me, considering how old this is
Yeah! Feels more like 2022 than 2011 tbh
Who is rewatching this masterpiece in 2024?

They should've had more screen time for Saurophaganax. It is more unknown than Allosaurus and it is honestly more interesting.
Some dinosaur trynna get some food in the fridge at 2AM

Very amazing! I am very fond of specific dinosaur topics and breeds! So I'd enjoy mostly each dinosaur video. Certainly this one! :)
Camptosaurus: I hope nothing happens-
Allosaurus: I'M HERE FOR THEM CHEEKS

I miss this program
Allosaurus has never seen such bulls**t before...
Camptosaurus was like a prehistoric zebra: succesful, peaceful and common but, partially because of that, vulnerable to predation.
3:55. (gasp) It's murder! MURDER!!!!!!
better put Columbo on the case then :P to solve the crime
@@incognitodon5779 it is a joke
The Planet Dinosaur allosaurus design looks a lot better than the Walking with Dinosaurs design in my opinion
PD was made over a decade after WWD was, so that's why the designs look better in the former.
Allosaurus: Obviously stalking prey with many parts of its body clearly visible at different times
Camptosaurus: Must have been the wind
Allosaurus is my favourite!
