      Haha yes! Unfortunately the race is only open to Manufacturers and costs a pretty penny to enter ($10k from my understanding). Years and years ago, I googled "Florida to Bimini crossing" and I recall kind of laughing at the general consensus saying you needed at least 26' to safely cross. 3 or 4 years ago, the internet would tell you you needed 30 feet to "safely cross" and today, after this video I read one site that said "The minimum recommendation is 40 feet"
    It's great to see someone with actual experience crossing in small boats. For those that may not know, you could cross to bimini in a bathtub with a trolling motor. You might have to wait 2 years for the weather window to do it, but it's possible. In a 15' boat, you may get a couple weather windows a year to cross with a high safety margin. In a 30' boat, you could probably go just about any time you want.
    I'd love to see some focus in a video about how you pick the weather window, what factors you're looking at, what sites you use to forecast conditions, etc.

    • @ninehundreddollarluxuryyac5958
      @ninehundreddollarluxuryyac5958 Год назад

      I would also like to hear how to pick a time to cross the gulfstream. What i do know is any northern component to the wind makes huge waves out there so you want light winds from the south for a day before and the day you go. winds out of the west knock the normal surf down, so I'm guessing winds out of the southwest would be good and get a weather report so you don't go on a day they expect a cold front or thunderstorms. Also expect thunderstorms out there every night all summer because the warm water makes its own weather when the air cools down at night.

    Forrest, I found your channel about a month ago. I mentioned I was going to convert my 25 Rude to a 35 on my 1648 in one of your video’s comments. You replied, so you might remember.
    I decided I’m going to sell my Ranger R-91I and focus on my 1648. I don’t use the Bass Boat much anymore anyway
    Eventually I’d like to build a similar boat like this long skinny one. I like the idea of 50 MPH while sipping gasoline.
    Additionally, I believe a well built boat like this skinny one, will cut through waves much better than my 1648 flat bottom Jon.
    I have picked up a 1983 35 HP Rude SS with electric start, (no tiller) in pretty good condition, all complete, no mods or apparent damage, but the seller didn’t know anything about its ability to run, or not?
    I also picked up a 1978 25 HP Rude, LS, manual start with a tiller. It’s all complete, but the carb is missing. When I bought it, I thought it would be a great motor to convert to a 35, but the a few weeks later I found the 35.
    I’m pretty sure I can get them both running, but I’m going to focus on the 35 first. I’ll probably convert it to tiller steering for my 1648, with the parts off the 25 LS.
    I’m going to build a Jack plate for the 1648, and see how much MPH I can get out of my (current) 25 Rude first, then switch to the 35 and see how fast I can go…fun times!

    Put a Dolfin or similar on that o/b and running at 3/4 throttle, I bet you see close to 30 mpg, maybe losing top-end speed, but maybe not. I picked up 3mph on the top end using it on my 12' project w/a 2smoke 9.9 Yam and, bonus, the boat planes faster, gets and stays there at lower speeds, and runs overall in better trim.
    Add Smart Tabs and set them neutral just to lift the stern a bit when running, you might get any lost speed back. Figured that one out on my Hobie Power Skiff. They stayed attached when I sold it, so I may build sponsons for the 12'er. :)

I have been traumatised by the amount of gas the Carver burns (about 1.7 miles per gallon). This has me thinking about making a solar powered super-light catamaran on my dock using Nidacore and just a few layers of glass. Have you ever gone through the process of getting a builder's title or are all your projects cut out of other boats? My Carver 27 has solar air conditioning, so the solar rack and charge controllers could be used for the feral cat.

    • @deltabravo1811
      @deltabravo1811 6 месяцев назад

      4 miles consumed 20 ounces of fuel or 0.04 gallons per mile. That's about 25 miles per gallon. Average consumption on a boat is 4 mpg. Many boats consume fuel in gallons per mile, so it's pretty dang efficient.

  • @baldok14
    @baldok14 Год назад +1

    Let's try to up the mpg game 😄I use 3hp electric outboard, it's a 1kW outboard so more like 1.4hp in reality but the torque is awesome. The boat is a 31ft wooden Captain's Gig, it has 2 aluminum masts and 4 sets of sails. When there are 6-7 people on board (capacity is 10-12 people) and not sailing, I can achieve 3 knots while consuming 300 Watts. The battery capacity is about 1.2kWh. If one 1 gallon is about 33.7kWh, then I get 387.6mpg.

      @@diywaterworld Here is some real world numbers. I have a VW Diesel 1.5, it will idle for 5 hours on one gallon of diesel. "IF" I had an alternator that "could" do 100 amps at that rpm, it would produce 100amps x 12.8volts = 1280 watts. That would be 1.28 kw x 1 hr equals 1.28 Kwh. To make 33.7kwh, just do a little more math and see that there is nothing that can produce that much electricity on one gallon of gas, or diesel. Generally speaking, the max theoretic hull speed in displacement mode, for a 31 foot waterline hull is 7.5 knots. So the calculation of 300 watts moving a 31 foot waterline boat at 3 knots "might" be possible.
      If you really want to do an electric propulsion boat, start with your ability to generate electricity by solar or a genset and what your hull speed is. 1/2 of your max hull speed is the efficient range.

    Hi Forrest! I just wanted to reach out again regarding the boat I emailed you about a couple months ago. I sent you a follow up email - just in case that one ended up in your spam folder as well. Give me a shout if you're still interested!

    Sweet skiff! I've built a few boats in my past, I think I know what my next one will be!
    Yeah, I'd go to the Bahamas if it looked like the sea gods were in my favor, but I carry a golden horseshoe up my ass!
