    Treat yourself to a pad of Pastelmat if you don’t already have some. This is fantastic for pastels and colour pencils. It’s my favourite and it layers and blends well, very well. 😊

    Happy Birthday Nicole! Nice haul of goodies for your birthday. I would like to see you do a demo of the Sennelier soft pastels, but not too interested in a Paul Rubens demo; sorry. Or a demo of any of the other art supplies that you got for your birthday would be great too.

    I think you should do a review and demo of the Paul Rubens pastels just so people who are looking at getting them or even just getting into pastels in general will know what they're getting with those ones specifically and can decide if they want to pay for them or go for something else 😁

    • @nicolemartinart5819

      I'd thought of that too . I'll put up a pole on the community tab. If I do the review then I'll be as fair and impartial as possible. I'll explain the pros and cons and why it didn't work for me but might work for you. Cause sometimes I might dislike when a paint has certain qualities but others may love it. Truly is a matter of taste but also I don't feel there are enough honest reviews on RUclips anymore.

    • @RampantRoses
      @RampantRoses Год назад +1

      @@nicolemartinart5819 I agree! I think it's mostly due to things like getting paid or just getting free product to promote a product as all good.. The problem with RUclips is that if a product gets promoted as good and it catches wind with other RUclipsrs it suddenly becomes a trend and everybody "has to have it", even if it's not their fortè and just ends up on a shelf forever. But I definitely think that it all comes down to people's preferences. For instance, I did a lot of research before I bought my first professional coloured pencils. I ultimately decided to go with Polychromos because of the in-depth reviews I watched and I could tell that they were what I was looking for. I'm glad I invested in them because I later bought some open stock Prismacolours and I very much dislike them. Wax based pencils just aren't my thing. Same with M. Graham watercolours. Everyone at the time raved about Daniel Smith (still do) but something about the way M. Graham looked in videos I saw spoke to me, and sure enough they make up at least 90% of my palette and only about 6% is D. Smith, the other 4% is a mix. Everyone is different, but that's what I love about honest and in depth reviews is that you get to understand the supply before investing in it and deciding you absolutely dislike it and regret the purchase.

    • @nicolemartinart5819
      @nicolemartinart5819  Год назад +2

      @@RampantRoses absolutely! Paid videos, sponsorships and free products really taint the waters. Besides that, when someone does RUclips for a job they often sensor their opinions even on products that they paid for with their own money because they know brands are always watching. If they give a negative review( even on something they paid for themselves) brands will be leery of working with them in the future. So, I feel you gotta keep a lot of that in mind when watching RUclips reviews on ANYTHING. RUclips is my hobby NOT my job and I don't make a cent off my videos . I'm free to say what I want. If you've ever seen an ad run in front of one of my videos , RUclips is making that money not me . I am not monetized.

    In my experience lifting has a lot to do with lack of tooth in the paper rather than the pastel.

      Yes ordinary but I have all the best papers including pastelsmat and sanded surfaces. There is something strange about this formula. I couldn't believe it either but these really do not grab well into each other. I have mount vision, Rembrandt, shmincke, I've had sennelier just to name a few. These are strange, at least when trying to blend. If you do more impressionism work they probably would be fine

    Hi Nicole! I found your channel when looking for a review on the Mount Vision Pastels, and I'm enjoying your videos. I live in Tampa, and I'm planning to visit the warehouse where they are made to buy some open stock. I think it was in that video where you mentioned Sennelier uses vat dyes and some colors aren't lightfast. Where did you find that information? Do you still not use the Senneliers because of that? Just curious because you mentioned them in this video. Also...besides the paper you make yourself and Pastelmat, what other pastel paper do you like? (Sorry for so many questions!)

      Greetings ! I'm so glad you've enjoyed my videos. Lucky you get to visit Carl Kelly's pastel warehouse! His are my favorite pastels. Yes, I still don't purchase sennelier pastels due to the lightfast issue and their pastels contain lead, cadmium, cobalts and manganese. I got that info straight from the company in an email exchange I had with them. They also refuse to disclose pigment information or lightfast information/ ratings on their pastels. You have to do your own testing which many artists have and found mixed results but ultimately most agree the reds, oranges, pinks and purples are unstable. Additionally, I have a friend who paints plein air and she took her pastels out on a sunny day. She had left the lid to her Paris set kitty corned on the box and by the end of the painting day many of the oranges , pinks and purples had faded noticeably. You could see a visible line down the pastel where the sun had touched vs where they had been shaded by the box lid. This is somewhat common knowledge among pastel artists and you'll hear other similar experiences in pastel groups and forums. However, if you're not selling your work or plan to keep it in a portfolio this is not really an issue. In my mind the non disclosure of pigment information and lack of lightfast ratings, places the sennelier pastels firmly in the student grade category. But that's just my opinion of course. Remember there are no legal definitions that companies must adhere to, to call their products artist grade. In fact I just saw a $3 box of Cra-z-Art kids colored pencils bearing the claims " artists quality." Should give artists some idea of how grossly unregulated the art materials industry is.

      @@nicolemartinart5819 Thank you for your thorough reply! I always do so much research on art supplies and materials, but I just assumed they were lightfast because of the reputable brand. I shouldn't have assumed and am very disappointed! I just bought a Paris set not too long ago, too! I am fairly new to pastels, so I'm not familiar with the pastel groups and forums (and also not on Facebook). As I said, I live in Florida and have done my own testing of colored pencils in the summer sun...maybe I'll do the same for them and pull the ones that are fugitive. Thank you again for your help!

      @@nicolemartinart5819 P.S. I agree that that the terms they use in marketing are so misleading. Not only in art, but so many other things! And it's also very disappointing that the company doesn't disclose pigment information like Mount Vision. All the more reason to visit Carl!

    • @nicolemartinart5819
      @nicolemartinart5819  Год назад +2

      @@micheleyoung9292 always do your own testing and never assume. Sadly we all have to be our own investigators with art materials. I just pulled several paint tubes from my acrylic collection for fugitive pigments . The tube says LF excellent but ... It's a lie. Like liquitex naphthol red light, PR9 is the red colorant used and is highly unstable! It is considered fugitive by the ASTM and not suitable for professional artwork. It's may be ok in masstone though that varies greatly by manufacturer. However it fades rapidly with the slightest dilution. So your tint and midtone mixes are a lost cause.
      In terms of Carl's pastels, I have done some lightfast testing and had good results so far BUT I have not tested every single color so be mindful. I'd still encourage you to do your own testing. He does disclose pigment information and they all look to be good , solid trustworthy choices. I don't know Carl and I'm not affiliated with any brand whatsoever. I'm just passionate about his pastels because I truly love them. And if you've watched many of my videos, you know I don't give glowing reviews often( if ever) RUclips is oversaturated with them but you won't find that on my channel 🙂 if you're interested in lightfast testing though I will have a series coming to the channel soon on dozens of art supplies( all still in testing) where I'll show the results brand by brand. From colored pencils, to watercolors and more.
