I'm not really a scanline person as I find them to be a bit distracting. However, the CRT simulate scanlines for 480i content are fantastic and very realistic. Many people say the CRT scanlines are the best available though.
Thanks to the... MoTioN AdApTiVe DeInTeRlAcEr!!! 😂 Man I really regret getting an OSSC because the PS2 was really THE console I wanted to use it for. It's gonna be pricey but I think I'll buy it even just for PS2 lol nothing can beat its picture quality
The OSSC is still amazing and I think it gives a slightly better picture quality than the 5X in a lot of cases. The bob deinterlacing is the big point of issue for a lot of people. Motion adaptive deinterlacing really makes capturing footage from the PS2 a lot easier!
For the convenience and compatibility, yes. I've used an OSSC and GBS-Control. OSSC's picture quality is definitely better but then its not the most compatible device, additionally it only has bob deinterlacing. GBS-Control is amazing but you have to build it yourself (unless you can find a prebuilt model) and the screen tearing is an issue. The image quality isn't quite as good either.
It's honestly absolutely fine. I'm using a RetroTINK 5X these days for convenience and compatibility and I'd say the output isn't far off the RT5X's Generic 4:3 mode. I'm planning on making a slightly more comprehensive video on the GBS at some point.
@@tunnotron3000 Thanks for replying so quickly! I'm trying to decide if I should upgrade to the Retrotink 5x Pro. I play mostly on my PS2, Sega Genesis and GC. I'm concerned the price won't justify the upgrade. For the cost, I want it to be a significant upgrade in image quality. If it's just a marginal upgrade, I'll pass.
I bought the 2X Pro as a means to get my N64 to show on my 4KTV. My TV (luckily) has the composite/component inputs, so I use component for my PS2...but there is a part of me that wonders if I just should have splurged a little more and got the 5X Pro. It's not that I think PS2 games looks bad through component, but there's some obvious advantages here. the 5X Pro though being $300 is just too much, it's too pricy to me...hell the 2X being like $130 was too much, and now supposedly the guy is working on a Retrotink 4K device that can upscale almost anything...that'll likely be $500! But I just can't help but wonder what if?
Don't worry about it too much. The 2X seems to meet your needs which is fine, it's easy to feel like the grass is greener. I bought the 5X mainly for it's convenience as I'd previously been using a GBS Control chained into an OSSC which was messy. £300 was a lot of money for me at the time but I was just in a position where I could afford it. I don't have any plans to buy the 4K as it doesn't suit my needs. You could potentially try a GBS Control as the pre built units are fairly cheap these days. Mine was home built so I can't really vouch for the quality of the pre builts though!
It is expensive but still cheaper than a Framemeister! In my case, it was worth it for the capture card compatibility and lack of sync drops. I've used a RetroTINK 2X SCART, OSSC and GBS-Control over the years and they've all had their own issues. The 5X seems to cover the most ground possible.
Nah, I bought one 4 or 5 years ago but it was incredibly inconvenient. For a very faithful CRT look you can use scanlines with the Bob CRT Simulate option. Different options work for different people; I just don't have the space or patience to deal with a CRT TV anymore.
Maybe you need to adjust your monitor? There are a few horror/darker games in there but stuff like Ape Escape, Parappa and SSX are all bright and colourful. This is a direct capture from the 5X so this is what the PS2 outputs.
@@steveothehulk the settings are basically default. At this point there was no ADC colour calibration options in the 5X firmware and no post processing was done. Trust me, my settings are fine 🙂 if anything looks dark/dull, it's because that's what the PS2 was outputting.
No worries! Normally we'd adjust this with our TVs (or the new ADC2 settings in recent firmware). The 5X doesn't have any kind of auto-gain setting so basically what if gets from the console is what you see. Stuff like the Megadrive, Saturn and 3-Chip SNES are quite dark and dull without these adjustments.
Man... onimusha is fantadtic.. and baldur's gate too..
I'd really like to play more Baldur's Gate. I'm sure it gets deeper but I also like the idea you could put on a podcast and just hack away!
How are the scanline /crt filters? I have a 2x and I have to turn up the contrast and backlight all the way up.

I accidently stumbled upon this video by searching for SSX. Great job!

It should do! I can't imagine any reason why it wouldn't. It hasn't had a problem with anything I've thrown at if so far.
