  • Le Samouraï popped up in the French New Wave and gave us the definitive image of the “cool Hit Man” that endures to this day, and so it only made sense that Clint, Cal and Alex welcome special guest and co-writer and director of Hit Man, Richard Linklater! The Academy Award nominated filmmaker chats about why people think retail hitmen actually exist, how Le Samouraï helped influence that belief and why the rest of the French New Wave looked up to Jean Pierre Melville and his incredible nom-de-guerre from the French Revolution.
It’s a super fun, super special in-between season installment of the CineFix Top 100 and we hope you have a good time with it!
Meanwhile, Dan’s algorithm is chirping like crazy in its cage, so we think somebody planted a bug in our apartment.
CineFix Top 100 was created by Clint Gage and Dan Parkhurst and is produced by Tayo Oyekan, with Director of Photography, Jamie Parslow and Technical Producer, Marhyan Franzen. The “black and white, in color” is a perfect description. I even had a brief moment during the credits where I had to remind myself if the movie I had just watched was in B&W or not

I’m a big noir and neo-noir guy and watching this for the first time totally unlocked the missing piece between the classical Hollywood noirs and the more “modern” neo noir

Two years ago I was able to see this movie in Paris, with no subtitles. It was an experience. I had seen the movie several times. But now I was free to focus on all subtle directing and performances. Then the surreal moment of waiting for a train in the same stations the brilliant chase sequence was shoot just an hour later.

As happens surprisingly often, I find myself relating most to Alex Stedman's relationship with this movie. I watched it in preparation for finally catching up on this series, and I struggled a little bit to grasp why it has the reputation it does. But my appreciation of it deepened a lot as I was watching this episode, and now I'm sure I'll want to revisit it at some point. Good thing I bought the Criterion Blu-Ray. You guys should get sponsorship money from them, because if you keep featuring movies that are in the collection, I'm going to keep spending money on them that I can ill afford.

Finally an old school movie I've seen before the Cinefix video about it :D Watched it a couple of months ago and it was great, awesome to see real spycraft/counter surveillance in a movie instead of what Hollywood normally does.

Decade + Country is just a wonderful way to do Top 10's. Sometimes just taking a snapshot at a place and time is enough because you can offer context and trends that are perhaps harder to hit in other lists. Please do!

I have watched all of these so far and a recurring comment seems to be I haven’t seen this film so it wasn’t on my list. I think that once you have the final 100, you should all go back through the final 100, maybe with those that were replaced, and rerank the 100, now that you have all seen all of the films.

I loved this episode, so cool that you got Richard Linklater on! I also love Le Samouraï, I watched it for the first time after learning it inspired Jim Jarmusch' Ghost Dog and John Woo's The Killer, but as much as I love Le Samouraï, I think my favorite Melville is Army of Shadows.

There's a lot of movies you can watch without subtitles. Like I was unable to get Nuovo Cinema Paradiso in a language I knew for the longest time and it was never a problem. Sound of Noise is great even though I have it only with Swedish subtitles (a language I kind of know, but not really). These are just the two examples that come to mind immediately, but considering that I was watching movies before I could read and still enjoyed them, it isn't that hard.

I watched this last year with a slew of other French crime movies. Honestly this movie does absolutely nothing for me. My main criticism, and this is spoilers, in all of these french films no matter how cool the criminals are, they all must be shot to death and never ever ever get away with their crimes. Maybe there was some sort of code that prevents an anti hero from winning at the time.
Perhaps this was fun at some point, I just think it's bizzare. The main character, Jef, is essentially a blank page with the single word "killer" scrawled and underlined in the corner of his character sheet. I found myself confused why I was supposed to care for this antihero other than "boy he's got that trenchcoat mafia style."
There is a point in the film where there is a narrative switch akin to Kurosawa's High and Low where the audience begins to follow the police in their attempt to capture Jef. Something just doesn't click during this transition. The cops are equally unlikeable despite their craftiness, and the film proceeds into a cat and mouse game between our zero personality Jef, and gruff brutalist police chief.
The chase itself is also odd, the collected Jef is suddenly spastic in mannerisms. The mental image of him barely clearing subway doors comes to mind. By films end, I only feel the words "alright... good“ cross my lips.
