    This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new Hyundai IONIq 5 full-EV compact crossover. This EV is the first model in Hyundai’s new family of IONIQ electric vehicles. The Hyundai Motor Group’s plan is to introduce 23 BEV models and sell 1 billion BEV units worldwide by 2025. 3300 pre-orders of the IONIQ 5 have been placed in Canada.The entry-level IONIQ 5 standard range comes with a smaller 58 kWh battery and RWD only. It has 168 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque with 354 km of EV range. The RWD Long Range model with the larger 77.4 kWh battery has 225 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, it offers the most range at 488 km/303 miles. The AWD Long Range model has the most power with 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque. It has a 77.5 kWh battery and gets 414 km of EV range. The AWD model is only available on the top trim. This model has the fastest 0-100 km/h time which is 5.1 seconds, the RWD model with the smaller battery gets 8.5 seconds and RWD with the larger battery 7.3 seconds. It has a futuristic design which is inspired by the 1974 Pony Coupe concept. The retro looking pixel headlamps and taillights give this EV a cool vibe. It also has active air intakes, flushed door handles, a V-shaped front bumper and a clamshell hood. This is the first time Hyundai has ever used a clamshell hood. The IONIQ 5 measures 182.5 inches in overall length, 74.4 inches wide and 63 inches tall. The wheelbase is 4 inches longer than the Hyundai Palisade, which is a mid-size SUV, but is actually 14 inches shorter in length. The IONIQ 5 offers a large car-like interior space in a compact SUV. The eco-friendly interior materials and nature inspired colours are at many touch points. These materials include recycled plastic bottles, plant based yarns, natural wool yarns and bio paint with plant extracts. The moveable centre console can slide back and forth 5.5 inches, which allows the driver to freely enter and exit the cabin on either side when parked in a narrow spot. The IONIQ 5 has an available 15 watt wireless phone charger, an 8-speaker Bose sound system and it’s the first Hyundai to offer over the air wireless updates to the multimedia and navigation system.

    They absolutely nailed it. And I think the Kia EV6 is just as good and offers a contrasting version of the vehicle. I hope it takes a good chunk of market share away from Tesla who have become arrogant and complacent in their Model Y and emphasize speed and battery efficiency over build quality, refinement and any attempt at attention to detail in the interior. This is a better car even if the tech isn't as good because tech isn't the biggest aspect of a car. Ride/handling, noise vibration, quietness is what a car features of a cell phone.
    I have no problem with the price of it. It cost what it cost and for this amount of quality and refinement, it's almost a bargain. Ioniq and EV is a brand of vehicles. Ioniq 2, 3 4, 6, 7, etc will follow as well as EVs for Kia. And some of them will cost less but of course won't be quite as nice as this pair of EVs. Congrats to Hyundai/Kia. Now, please, build a good amount so they won't go over MSRP like the Palisade and Telluride have (at least in the states they have).

    The future has arrived! Hyundai definitely has produced a compelling EV option. It has a refreshingly original design, akin to a concept vehicle. Despite being pricey, it looks like they’ve got a winner. And unlike Tesla, Hyundai has an amazing dealership network in Canada (most cities in North America). Which comes in handy when you want see one, test drive one or servicing it. Thanks another electrifying video.

      I used to own 2 brand new Hyundais( sonata hybrid and Santa Fe sport 2.0T) and now I own 2 Teslas (M3 and MY). The biggest reason I switched was no dealership structure of Tesla. From onsite test drive, online purchase and mobile servicing(that comes to your house) it's a much better experience with Tesla. Everybody pays the same price for the same car. That's the way to go. FYI, I love the looks and technology of IONIQ5. I might consider GV60 when it comes out.

      ... my closest Tesla dealership is 2-1/2 hours away. Hyundai dealerships? .... at least 10 or more closer. And I will never buy a car by clicking on a mouse. The same applies to shoes and clothes. I also have zero emotional response from any of Elon Musk’s cars (truck?). So Tesla will not be an option for me.

      I average less than two thousand mile per year (yes you read that right!) since my work in 1.5 miles away, and rarely go on long trips. For me the 200 mile regular version will do just fine. The only issue is that I can't charge it overnight at my condo since they have no chargers, and unfortunately no plans to install any anytime soon. Guess I'll just have to visit the Hyundai dealer for a fast charge. hehe

      The problem is that an AWD version with the smaller battery would get less than 180 miles (EPA combined range) of range on AWD mode. More like 160 miles pure highway range. Take 70% of that to preserve battery longevity (and charging speed slows down considerably after 80% charge even if you wanted to charge more), 70% of that reduced figure for 75+ mph driving, and 60% of that reduced figure in deep Canada winters and you have a real world high speed, cold weather highway range of less than 50 miles (before extreme low charge/range anxiety warning) between charges. A lot of customers wouldn't want to pay almost $50k US (before federal credit) for that...

    I don't know why but I like this car a lot. Looks clean and well-built. I'm slowly coming around to the idea of EV cars. The main problem in my mind is still range limitations (I'd like to see 500 miles) and then there's still the lack of charging stations outside of big cities. The government needs to incentivize gas stations to add charge stations so that EV drivers can just "stop at the next gas station" to fuel up just like everyone else does.

    • @BillAnt
      @BillAnt 2 года назад +1

      EV's are not for everyone at the moment, depending on the length of driving you need, and charging available at home. For those who live in apartments and condos without charging stations, EV's probably won't work till they get chargers installed.

    I agree Zack! The EV market is seemingly resolving itself to be for the upper-middle class as a niche product; no one is bringing something to market that's going to push prices down, that used to be a Hyundai specialty.

    • @halderavik
      @halderavik 2 года назад +7

      EVs are expensive because of battery is expensive. Give the technology another 2-3years. Keep in mind, the average price that we pay for a new vehicle is 41k.

    • @davidcarroll8735
      @davidcarroll8735 2 года назад +4

      I also believe the early buying EV households will be doing so as a second or third car, which by definition will be upper-middle class. They/we will also be overnight charging in our garages or on our driveways. And, if you’re maximizing the $7500 US Federal Tax credit, you need to be paying at least that much.

    • @Vanilla_Donut
      @Vanilla_Donut 2 года назад +1

      EVs are expensive to build so the price reflect that at the current stage in the market. All these early adopters who can afford it, will buy but those who can't will stick to ICE or maybe go with a hybrid instead. Prices will become lower likely near 2025 or 2030 as automakers has streamlined their EV productions and new advancement in battery technology can help. Or lower priced EVs use the previous tech to help keep costs low.
      At this stage, it is important for both the federal and provincial governments to offer incentives to help lower that barrier to entry so more people can choose a larger variety of EVs. The lowest priced EV so far seems to be the Chevy Bolt but not everyone may want that type of vehicle.

      @@halderavik The price of pickup trucks skews that average $41k. The first gen Nissan Leafs used to start at $32,000 in Canada, and top out in the high $30s. Now most EVs start at $42-45k and go up to 55k easily. The 2012 Focus EV was twice the price of the gasoline version, the 2022 Kona/Souls are exactly the same problem 10 years later. There needs to be some sort of reset with what auto makers are doing with their EV offerings

    Just a point on the regenerative braking/paddle shifters. I have a model 3 and I don't find I any need to "shift" regeneration levels. If I want less regeneration I just apply a little more pressure on the accelerator peddle. If I want full regeneration I take my foot off the accelerator. That way you are always able to vary the regeneration for changing situations. Personally I don't really see the need for the paddle shifters.

    In Canada, it is a no brainer to choose this top of the line Ioniq 5 over the base model 3.
    The base model 3 now costs 60k and the federal incentive of 5k does not apply to it.
    The Ioniq 5 ultimate top trim is also 60k, is much bigger, has more range, is faster and on top of it also qualifies for the federal rebate of 5k basically bringing down the price to 55k.

    Great review guys!! Really like the interior. Can you guys or anyone answer a question about charging stations? If I head out on on a long trip in my new EV vehicle, are all these charging stations "generic" and accommodate any EV? I assume every manufacturer won't have to build their own charging networks across the country. The reason I ask is because about 20km from my home in Halifax NS, there are about 6 charging stations at an Irving gas station and they are clearly marked with the "Tesla" logo. Would these only be able to be used by Tesla owners? Thanks!

    Great review, looks like a winner, especially at 44k for the base model. I’ve driven the iPace, Polestar 2, eTron, Ionic, ‘18 Leaf (avoid pre-‘18 Leafs, the 2nd gen is much better) and we have owned our Model 3 for 3 years. We also used to have a C-Max phev. Biggest complaint about the Model 3 is the crashy suspension, and the dumb door handles. I thought the Polestar was a substantially better car for less money, but the interior usability is terrible by comparison. The Model 3 would drive circles around it, but the quality feel and ride blew the Model 3 away. For 30K less, I’d take this over the Y. I’d take the Mach-E over the Y too. The only “if” is the charging network, don’t discount how important that is. 3rd party charging infrastructure is garbage by comparison.

      Which 3 do you have, LR or the Performance? I had a MYLR with the 19# wheels, and the ride was definitely on the firm side, definitely not supple or absorbent, and I've heard the Performance version is downright harsh. Curious if it's the same with the 3LR and 3P. In any case, I think Hyundai and Kia are going to give the Y a run for its money!

Might have been fixed by now, don't know. That said, the Ioniq 5 does have some teething issues if you look at the user forums in Europe. Many have/are being solved, such as the slower cold temperature charging. I'm quite happy to see Hyundai keep developing the system, as I'm sure VW is as well. Our trip from Lindsay On to P.E.I. would take an extra couple of days. Hotel cost and meals would make the trip more expensive that my CX 5 Turbo. Also finding recharge stations would be a pain. Thanks very much for the detailed review. We are actually trying to make a decision between this car and the ID.4. The annoying thing is due to the availability of these new EV's, there are no demo car for Ioniq 5 for test drive at the moment, at least in Vancouver BC. One of the biggest concern we have with this over the ID.4 is the lack of a rear window wiper. Was hoping this video would address this since it was filmed in the rain, but this was not mentioned at all. Wondering if the reviewer can kindly reply to touch on this. In some video reviews, which I believe, were filmed in Korea or Europe mentioned that the lack of rear wiper did made the rear window unclear in the rain. Love the features of other things of this car, but if the lack of rear wipe is really affecting the visibility of the rear window in the rain, this can be a deal breaker.

      I think the "EV for the masses at a reasonable price" will happen, but not for another 5-10 years. This industry is in its infancy and prices will come down when demand increases and the internal combustion engine is gradually phased out. Until that demand is created, the prices will remain stubbornly high. Just think back to the early years of the flat screen TV. They were asking $10,000 for the first large screen Plasma TV's!!!! This is where we currently are in the EV industry.
