    I also have one of these for an outdoor shower in my backyard (just for fun). Mine works great, but it was not particularly easy to set up and make the connections. The gas connection was fairly straightforward, and the shower head also went fairly easily (I have the flexible metal tubing shower head BTW--much much nicer than that plastic tubing), however I had to futz around for quite awhile to get a reliable non-leaking connection for the water hose. The adapter that came with the L5 for the water input connection was flat-out defective and came apart. After a trip to the hardware store, I finally found an adapter for the water input connection on the L5 that would allow me to use a quick disconnect on the water hose, and that setup finally worked well and was leak-free. Don't set the water pressure too high from the hose supply or the water will cycle through the heater mechanism too fast and it won't heat up properly. Also, try setting the shower head for a higher pressure setting which will further somewhat restrict the flow of water through the heater unit, and give you a nice hot spray from the shower head.

    Hi Terry! My last tank lasted three months and one week. I guess it depends on how often and for how long you use it. Propane cost around $2.50 a gallon (a 20 lb cylinder holds about five gallons). Depending on where I buy propane I pay from $12.50 to. $14.50 to fill a 20 lb tank. Be advised the Blue Rhino tanks state plainly on the level they contain 15 lbs of propane. I'm happy with the L-5 but they have other models. Best of luck! Wayne

    thank you starrry.
    You know I happen to have a rather Exquisite plumber for a husband and he is insistent upon giving us quite a nice setup! However I really like the idea of this battery operated tankless water heater! The reason being that a regular converted water heater will use your propane constantly to keep that water hot! This option is really going to save on resources that we have to purchase! Of course there's always wood but while propane is cheap, why not?

    Excellent looks good all you need is a spare set of batteries if this is installed in your Rv because the shower will not work without them you need them to run the pump. How long would that propane tank last running that water heater?

  • @bigjim284

    After looking over your videos, What came to mind was a small hydro generator attached to that water supply line up the hill and possibly another one that could connect to the over flow. Cheap generators can produce 8-18 volts and might extend your power supply in the Winter.. I have been preparing for off the grid living for a long time and If I can find land with running water I would like multiple power sources to charge the batteries.

    Cant say i agree with installing that heater inside, carbon monoxide is no joke, i know you have a fan, but that could stop working or become plugged up, carbon monoxide also sinks so the fan might not even pick it up, propane could leak so also having a bbq tank inside is a big safety no no they should NEVER be inside, but if nothing else get a carbon monoxide/lp gas detector they do say not to be used indoors for a reason

    One word. Dump-loading.
    I get most of my hot water from a 300watt element that dumps my 24volt surplus into a tank i only ever intended to be a "preheat" cylinder. My water now as we approach the NZ summer is steaming hot at all times.
    It doesn't take long with 2.2Kw of PVs to get my batteries charged, and then as voltage rises, my charge controller simply starts running this and other dump loads as well as limiting the harvest to avoid over charging. Another thing i run is a dehumidifier as a dump load. If i decide to boil the jug, these will automatically shut off till battery voltage is high again, so it's quite easy to run this from very little PV.
    I also have 2x190watt panels, my original panel, hooked directly to an element, but usually it's the dump load that provides the most energy.

    • @HippyChris
      @HippyChris 7 лет назад

      He he...
      Old comments still get noticed, so the update is that i upgaded to a 3*300W element, and run either 300 or the full 900W, which tends to be more in practice, as these ratings are @ 24V, but the system dumps at higher voltages.

      Have you considered installing a solar thermal panel or 2 for hot water? They are pretty cheap and only require a small pump to pump water up to your roof to heat the water. It might not be useful if you can't have it on all the time, but I would imagine you would only be running it in the summer when you have LOTS of electricity to use. I've watched a whole bunch of your videos today and left a lot of comments and I hope I am not coming off negatively because I've really enjoyed the videos.

    Hi, I use two Eccotemp L5 units. One for the shower and one for the kitchen sink. You probably already are aware of this but if you are careful you can add a Tee connection at the hot water outlet of the tankless water heater and run it to the bathroom sink. You need two wrenches or pliers to hold the pipe coming out of the unit stationary while tightening the tee. I didn't plan mine very we'll and barely had enough room to install it. Also, if you connect a tee you can only use either the shower or the sink, not both at the same time. I'll be glad to show you a picture of what I did if you are interested.
    If you can afford the second unit to hang next to the sink it would save you hauling the hot water for the dishes.
    I've used my two units for over a year now and just recently drilled a hole through the wall so I could put the propane tank outside...makes it rough if you need to swap tanks mid-shower...Brrrr!
    Thanks, best of luck,
    Wayne

    Is there a different style? Like rather than have a shower head, are there also sink faucet heads available? If you have enough money to do so, you could set up 2 heaters. One for the shower, and the next for the sink. That way there's hot water in both the kitchen and bathroom

    so is the pressure coming from an internal pump IN the tankless or does that come from pressure in a water pressure tank, maybe attached to a well or something... i actually invested in a couple solar water heaters that i bought from china a few years ago - one is a split pressure (which means there is a loop of tubing that goes through the solar part, takes the heated fluid and transfers the heat in the tube to the water in a tank.. becuase it's separate you can have the tube filled with antifreeze so the solar part can stay outside all year)... i also have a single tank one which means the heat from the solar tubes directly heats the water in the tank (tank is 'on top') but you have to drain the tank in the winter... amazing how little sun it takes to heat the water up, and even as a pre-heater for some other source of heating, it's great.. in the summer the gas water heater doesn't even turn on. by the way both solar systems together, including freight on a boat from china to canada was about 1200 bucks, and i have to say the cusotmer service was ASTOUNDING TERRIFIC.. alibaba is my new friend. not sure if you guys in the US can import stuff from china though (or want to).

    • @StarryHilder
      @StarryHilder  9 лет назад

      Sounds like you got a great system there! Thanks for sharing....I just did a video addressing our off grid water and how it works (soon to be posted)...so funny you ask about the tankless heater. We do now have a pressure tank. The tankless heater needs so much psi to run, and our gravity feed system didn't provide enough pressure. Thus the pump was installed. But..it only runs for a minute like twice a day..very little electricity. BUT if we ever lose power we will go back to our old system..heating the water thru our woodstove in the winter...and less pressure..I LOVE THE idea of the sun heating the water..in the summer this would be Great for our set up. Im gonna have my husband read this and if he has nay questions we will keep you posted! Thanks for the awesome info on your setup!

    • @onelessrat4022
      @onelessrat4022 9 лет назад

      Starry Hilder now, i didn't invent thermo dynamics or whatever the heck you call it when hot water rises, but if you were to put a couple coils of bendy copper pipe and wire it to the back of the your woodstove, so one end went to the cold 'in' hole on an old water tank and the other end went in the hot 'out' hole, it technically should cycle the water and start a syphon - back to the stove, gets heated, into the hot water tank, rises up which sucks more cold into the tank...... engineer775 has a bunch of videos on it.... costs next to nothing, and that way you're not steaming up the house and lugging water all over... and a water tank holds a heck of a lot more than a pot!

  • @lukeb8045
    @lukeb8045 9 лет назад

    They are great little units, I have one for my cabin. These water heaters are meant to be used outside. I have it set up that the water heater is in my utility room with separate ventilation, not in the bathroom. Most importantly you should keep your propane tank outside. You make it sound like these units are supplying the water pressure, but you need supplied water pressure to turn these units on. A 12 Volt RV pump for example would work. If the water is very cold to begin with it will not quite heat up the water enough to have a nice hot shower. Even with all that it is still a great solution for off-grid set-ups.

    • @StarryHilder
      @StarryHilder  9 лет назад

      Luke B All good advice. We of course do things a little unconventional on homestead. But it works for us! Just a note..our water is freezing cold..direct fr om that spring..and this baby heats it right up. AND yes..you need a pressure tank to run it!!

    • @terryrehel8102
      @terryrehel8102 9 лет назад

      Luke B Can you please tell me what happens if your input water temp. is not always the same.Is the output temperature regulated

    • @lukeb8045
      @lukeb8045 9 лет назад

      No it is not, the input water temperature has a big effect on what the output water temperature would be. Not a big concern if you hook up your hot water heater to just supply the hot water to your shower or any hot water needs so you can mix in cold water if needed. (just like a regular shower) I have also found that the unit seems to heat the water up more and more as you are talking a shower so it is nice to be able to adjust how much cold water you want to mix in as you are showering. You do have the option to regulate how much water goes through the unit with a knob on front and that would effect the output water temperature for obvious reasons.

Perhaps you should also do a video for the maintenance of tankless water heaters...like having to flush them once or twice a year. Also for your video on water storage for droughts...what about going to having grey water tanks for garden areas...just a thought. Keep busy with more videos!

    A GoFundMe page was started on her behalf. Even $1 would go a long way to help her during this crisis in her and her family's life. I created an email address that I will share with Starry and her family, they will receive 100% of the proceeds by using this address. I have listed the address at the hospital where you can send cards or care packages on the GoFundMe page if you prefer send something through the mail, just so everything is in one central location. Starry has a daytime job as a nurse and needs our support to help with bills and running her homestead while she is recovering. As you all know she also contributes immensely to her homestead's upkeep and her contribution will be missed. If everyone donates only $1 it will go a long way to help her keep things running.

We have burned wood all our lives and really like the barrel stove..we have on outside...and indeed it could do a better and more efficient job at heating water then a rocket stove...thanks for the idea..its a always GOOD to think outside the box!!

    Hey so do you have to have water pressure to the Eccotemp or does it pump its water?

    • @StarryHilder
      @StarryHilder  8 лет назад +1

      yes, we have water pressure. u have to have a certain amount for the ecotemp to work. i dont know that number right off the top of my head.

    first time here, nice BIG channel!
    why don't you plumb the hot line to the outlet of the water heater and then you would have hot water everywhere instead of filling a bucket, taking it to the kitchen, etc?
    should be simple, especially if you use PEX.
    .

    • @StarryHilder
      @StarryHilder  8 лет назад

      we hooked up a seperate on demand hot water heater for the kitchen sink. finally! the problem with running tieing into the line from the other hot water heater was it would take forever for the hot water to get here.

    • @donaldfafard
      @donaldfafard 8 лет назад

      ahhhh, know what you mean.
      our setup for now makes the hot water travel about 50+ feet.
      even with no restrictor in the faucet it SEEMS like it takes forever to get there.

    You have about 300 safety violations in just your bathroom. That water heater is not designed for indoor use! You are venting propane exhaust right into your living space! A tankless water heater that is designed for indoor use will have a vent tube that blows un-burnt gases, etc. outside! Please get a carbon monoxide detector alarm...at the very least

      What do people with gas stoves and ventless heaters do, drop like flies?

    • @edwardl.990
      @edwardl.990 11 месяцев назад

      Gas cooking stoves are designed for indoor use but not for heating spaces. Indoor, ventless heaters burn so efficiently that some do not require venting and are indoor safe. Tankless water heaters do require venting to the outside.
