I love my JP 8000. I remember reading about it in electronic musician when it first came out and I do remember it being one of the first analogue modeling synths available. I never thought I'd be able to get on but I found my used in a stereo store after I had just laid down some money for the Korg legacy collection with ms 20 controller. I wasn't looking to buy anything else but I saw it and I was like how much is this? I don't remember what I paid. 5-600 at the time, being 2004. In all that time I had never forgotten about it and I bought it, stupidly perhaps at the time but that's all in the past now and I still have it and I still love it.
bought one of these about a year ago after falling in love with the JP-8000 template in u-he Diva. I love it. The supersaw is great, but, in my opinion, the feedback oscillator is the star. You can get some crazy lead and atmospheric sounds using the feedback osc. You can also get some good FM sounds from the cross-mod.
Nice video. The JP-8000 was my longest owned synth, bought it new around 1997 and just sold it last year. It was very easy to program, great interface.

I have the rackmount JP-8080, and I have to say, this is my favorite synth ever. It's the best balance to date between features and accessibility. If I have a sound in my head I want to make, there is literally no source on the planet that will produce that sound faster.

Hey, Bo! Yes, it can even be "too" fat in the mix :-D but thankfully there's a handy EQ on board. Next week I'm getting an original (Access, not Corona) Virus and plan to make a comparison with the other classic Trance synth
Am I the only one who flashbacked to the 1960s, when he said "he just got back from NAM"? I was seeing helicopters, and soldgers, in the jungle, for a minute there. Being born in 1960 will do that to you.
Another great demo! Like a lot of people, I sold off a bunch of my first-gen VA synths for the “better” models that came out in the mid-2000’s. Selling the JP8k was a mistake (I also really miss the virus KB) because they were quite distinctive. Didn’t really sound “analog” but had a very cool, iconic tone. Glad you’ve got your old friend back!
I’m pleased you like the JP, it’s one of my favourite synths as well, only got mine a few years ago but enjoy playing it very much. I loved your trance demo,👌reminds me it’s a synth that defined a whole period of music that I have great memories of.😎
Super cool to see a deep dive on a neo-classic synth. 90's gear is now becoming harder to find and youtube was not a thing back when these pieces of gear were more popular.
I'm still using my Roland JP 8080 and absolutely love it! I actually bought an ms2000 and returned it because I didn't like it A real sleeper of a synthesizer that didn't sell very well but was also a fantastic analog emulator was the alesis ion. I bought one of those at the urging of a friend and it's becoming more and more prominent in my setup today. Great video and thank you for highlighting this wonderful synthesizer.
My JP-8000 shares a stand with an MS2000, and an Alesis Micron (Pretty much the Ion in a smaller package). All three of them are absolute beasts in their own right and make powerful trifecta of tone!
Although the JP8000 came out in 1996...It looks & sounds equally good today...Roland do produce some great pieces of kit...The JP8000 is up there..I would really like to get one...maybe this year i will.
Thanks for explaining the making of a Supersaw and bringing this oldie back to the front where it belongs, usefull for my other synths as well. Really looking forward to the videos that will explore the many other sides of the JP-8000's synthesis engine. I like the JP for the other sides because the supersaw was "overused" at the time and trance is not my kind of music (67 now). Ik have the module version JP-8080. To compensate the somewhat colder sound of the JP i use the much warmer sounding AN1x. what a gem !
@devontodetroit In fairness, there was nothing much wrong with the MS2000 and even allowing for the step sequencer buttons, I think it's amongst the better looking synths ever made. What price would a Yamaha AN1x go for nowadays if it had the looks and user interface of an MS2000 or even a Nord Lead, I wonder?
Supersaw forever! If you don't expect the JP-8000 to be the perfect VA aliasing free synth, it is capable of countless interesting sounds. RM, crossmodulacion, sync, multimode filter, up to 4 oscillators with nice shaping options per performance...
Thank you so much for posting this! I just got a JP8000 myself about 6 months ago and haven't really had a play with till now after moving house. Just to make a super saw has got me wanting to play with the keyboard more now.
Still have mine mint condition. Just love all the controls for endless fun. Sounds amazing. Just wish I could play as well as you. It's made of a strange plastic, I would think would scuff and scratch easily, similar to the Anx1, That I have also. I would have loved a bigger keyboard nut, We can't have everything. Just grateful I have one. It's a keeper. Great demo. Not sure if we can really compare it to the JP8, but I'm no expert. Synths have shot up in price since I bought mine. This is a classic.
There was a piece of free software called SuperWave P8 years back. Not sure if it works with today's operating systems, though. Haven't used it in years
@@SynthManiaDotCom Yes it does, now there's the Utimate version, other great synths such as Equinoxe, and a few cool drum machines (esp the Minipops). Superwave is still very appreciated nowadays.
Excellent, thanks!! Have been wanting one of these for a while, this just shows me Im still wanting one! I understand it makes a great midi controller as well.
RPS- Realtime Phrase Sequencer? How do I know?! I owned one of these beasts but sold it, unfortunately. Software promises to deliver this and more, but never heard a VST sound as good as this yet. If someone manages to capture the magic of this in software, wow, I'll buy! But even then, the hardware user interface is PERFECT, just the right amount of knobs and sliders, its a pleasure to use!
Brings back memories. I had a couple in the past too. Now I have the System-8 and I have not really looked back but It is fun to see a synth that takes you back.
I come from a rock n roll background originally but aspire to produce quality electronic music. Your vids are Synth University for me. Thank you for the work you have put into them and sharing your knowledge.
I consider it much more than a trance machine, but I suppose that is it's legacy. Could be mistaken but did not hear a mention that it was continuing the legacy of juno series. Good to see it being respected again and going up in value.
As I stated in the video, the Supersaw is just scratching the surface of this wonderful synth. Re: the legacy, actually it's not of the Juno series, but the Jupiter (JP). I mentioned it in the video at 13:54
Impressive ! (Y) Talking about trance music. Could you make a video/talk about possible synths used during late 90s early 00s for hard trance production namely Hennes & Cold, Scot Project style. Especially Hennes & Cold bassline in many of their productions like in Polar Lander remix from 2: 33-2: 43 ruclips.net/video/X3DWEMAYoHg/видео.html I understand that this is reversed bass, but the sound is way different than I hear other hard trance tracks and not able to replicate with e.g. SH-01A. So I am wondering if this is to do about layering different sounds for one bassline or it is about dual OSC like JP-8000 with added delay? The same bassline is used in their original tracks like First Step and Second Step.
I think this synth had the biggest impact on the sound of modern music. Sometimes I wonder how different a lot of stuff would sound had there been no JP8K.
Such a great synth! Visually it looks as it sounds. Had one for many years until it died. Such a multi purpose synth. Able to be used with so many types of genres, or to create new genres. I remember it being so much fun to play, has such a musicality to it.
It sounded very cool back then, a lead that could cut a tree down. Just didn’t buy it because of the glitch sounds while tweaking the delay knob “live”, then there was this thing about no ARP MIDI notes sent to MIDI Out port when using the ARpeggio function. In any case, now wished I got it. Looking at the keyboard or hearing the sounds it makes brings me back to the late 90s . Great demo of the sounds, thanks! Its back to the future for me now, before I get stuck here.
@@vultur311 There's separate cutoff filters like FabFilter Micro, but most VST synths have it. The closest VST I have heard to a JP-8080 is the Adam Szabo JP6K... it has cutoff on it, but it doesn't do everything the hardware did.

Nice to hear you mentioning the MS2000! I was repairing an MS2000R (swapping out some bad RAM) and during the testing of the unit, I fell in love with it, and bought it from it's owner.
I loved your trance demo,👌reminds me it’s a synth that defined a whole period of music that I have great memories of.😎
Thanks, Pizza Gogo!
@@SynthManiaDotCom oh yes, should have said...please do more trance:-o
I have watched this one for years. I have to buy one someday.
Thank you, Rik! I plan to get all the original VAs for a comparison, including the AN1x
You are a talented and knowledgeable guy. Always enjoyable to watch your videos.
Theodore, thank you!
I'm looking forward to seeing the MS-2000. I bought a 2000B after seeing Ladytron live with three of them onstage after their first album came out.
Actually it was during their third album, Witching Hour. Ladytron used to give those synths names (Cleopatra, Babylon, Gloria, Ulysses).
@@Mindphaser1 Thanks for the correction! It was definitely when they named them!
@devontodetroit the 2000B came out in 2003. It's very dark grey instead of the very dark blue of the first version.
@devontodetroit Because you realised that it didn't sound as good as it looked?!
A staple in trance music of the late 90s and early 2000s. Even today it wouldnt sound out of place.
I still have my JP-8000 and love it very much. ❤️
Supersaw forever! If you don't expect the JP-8000 to be the perfect VA aliasing free synth, it is capable of countless interesting sounds. RM, crossmodulacion, sync, multimode filter, up to 4 oscillators with nice shaping options per performance...
I wish they still made this or remade it. I have an access Virus that I saved up for and the only other board worth saving up for is the JP-8000
Thank you so much for posting this! I just got a JP8000 myself about 6 months ago and haven't really had a play with till now after moving house. Just to make a super saw has got me wanting to play with the keyboard more now.
Thank you, Doctodatronic!
Now I remember why I absolutely loved this thing, back in the day.
Great demo, once again 👍
Steven, thank you!
Thanks for covering the JP8000 I had been curious your take on it. Proper info.
I adore my JP-8080. I bought it new when they first came out and it plays nicely with analog gear.
One of the most versatile VA synths nowadays. I use it mainly for recreating old analogue synths (Trance super saws is what I use the less :) )
I also have a JP-8000 in my Studio. Great synthesizer! ;-)
I‘d love to hear that Harmonic Feedback OSC wave again. Miss it so much since the 90ies... Never found a software emulation of this so far.
maybe Diva?
tihinter ,hello you can try Sunrizer synth on App Store....what a sound! Friendly....JPK
Diva by u-he has a good recreation of the feedback oscillator.
I've been considering picking one up for a few months now. nice to see a new videos on the synth!
Love this synth 😍😍 nothing comes close to the trance sounds out of this bad boy
great timing for this video, I just bought one today!
This was a fun video to watch!
Brings back memories. I had a couple in the past too. Now I have the System-8 and I have not really looked back but It is fun to see a synth that takes you back.
I like what your playing. This synth is awesome.
My first comment, i just found your channel and i love it! The music at the 11min mark is totally what i am about!
Awesome! Thank you!
I mentioned it in the video at 13:54
Wouldn’t doubt your knowledge for a sec.
Great trip down memory lane!
Impressive ! (Y)
Talking about trance music.
Thanx a lot. That is an awesome demo :)
You good sir, are a genius. Never had my JP sound this good but now it does 🤓👍🤓👍🤓
I think this synth had the biggest impact on the sound of modern music. Sometimes I wonder how different a lot of stuff would sound had there been no JP8K.
Many modern hardstyle producers still using it. Great synth!
Such a great synth! Visually it looks as it sounds. Had one for many years until it died. Such a multi purpose synth. Able to be used with so many types of genres, or to create new genres. I remember it being so much fun to play, has such a musicality to it.
How do you think, can VST recreate that thick supersaw sound?
Yes try diva or zebra or operator in ableton
9:54 DAMN, JEEZZ... MAN, YOU KILLING ME WITH THIS CORDS
Wow you really make that JP-8000 sing my friend! You make it look easy :)
Rock on!
Wow, great synth. I would love to have that along with a 909 and 303.
Super saw has been cloned well in software... the filter however - has not.
Cut off filter is Huge part of it, so if software cant recreate whole thing we better buy the synth, right?
@@vultur311 There's separate cutoff filters like FabFilter Micro, but most VST synths have it. The closest VST I have heard to a JP-8080 is the Adam Szabo JP6K... it has cutoff on it, but it doesn't do everything the hardware did.
A 25 year old synth that still kicks sand in the face of modern VSTs, 8 note polyphonic too unlike the Roland Boutique that only has 4... what is this, devolution?
The JP6K VST is good, but interface needs improving!
I never listened to the trance genre directly but the timbres have always been inspiring to me. this synth is dope
Thanks for this awesome tutorial Paolo. Learned a lot here.
Nice to hear you mentioning the MS2000! I was repairing an MS2000R (swapping out some bad RAM) and during the testing of the unit, I fell in love with it, and bought it from it's owner. It's still a favourite of mine, along with the Prophecy (which you mentioned) and the Novation Nova Desktop (which also has a Super Saw).
If you like the MS2000 you should check out the Korg Radias
love it sounds huge!
Amazing machine
I'm trying to learn subtractive synthesis so I can understand how to create intentional sounds on the Sunrizer app. This helped. Thanks for uploading this.
