- Unreported World is in Pakistan, investigating the country’s blasphemy laws. They meet the lawyers following up blasphemy allegations and prosecute the accused. For the most serious cases, the sentence is life on death row. Marcel Theroux is in Lahore to talk to the families of the alleged blasphemers - and learn if the new government is ready to execute the convicted. The Supreme Court is yet to uphold any of the death sentences issued by lower courts.

Hang on a minute I am confused, Sawan the Christian guy got drunk with his friend who is a Muslim, had an argument with him, and this drunk friend of his accused him of blasphemy & Sawan was sentenced to death on the basis of an accusation by a drunk man. WTF seriously. A drunk man's accusation is sufficient to sentence a guy to death. I am gobsmacked.

(Bit of history here) In around 1936 when the Indian National Movement was underway, there were two major organisations that were demanding freedom- the Indian National Congress and the All-India Muslim League. They worked together in the beginning, but later after the first Provincial election, the Congress won almost all the seats. The Congress also rejected a proposal to form a joint government between themselves and the Muslim League. So the League, feeling that the Muslim Community which it represented would go under-represented or even unrepresented in the administration of free India, began demanding areas of electoral autonomy and reserved seats for Muslims in Northwestern India. This demand did not mention a new country.
However, since the Congress neglected to mobilise popular support among Muslims and since most influential Indian Nationalists were in jail, the League was able to garner support for its demands. The second provincial elections also boosted the League’s agenda, since it won most of the seats in northwestern India, even though the Congress had a majority in the rest of the country. Around 1945, led by Mohammed Ali Jinnah, the League began demanding for a new country, Pakistan, which would have a large Muslim majority. The Congress and the British tried to assure the League that muslims wouldn’t go unrepresented in Indian affairs, but the talks failed, and in 1947, Erstwhile British India was split into free India and free Pakistan, the partition marked with bloody riots all across northern india and the indo-pakistani border.
So yeah, the only reason Pakistan was created was to ensure that Muslims have the security of rights...
(Also I was educated in India, we learnt this piece of Indian History in 8th grade)

Welcome Kaleem Barki! Many Palistani Muslims live in Britain and you can feel the tension. They find it difficult that they cannot bully or order around the majority of the people like they can back in Pakistan. They don't care that some joke/gif of Islam on the computer can send a man to prison for life or a mob could hang him. They hide this psychology when moving to Britain but if you are a sensitive person, especially observing the street Dawah preachers, you can feel they look down on non-Muslims and wish they could bully people into their belief system like this back home

I have a Christian friend that lives in Lahore. The security that is needed for the church she attends is unreal. They also have to pay the police out of the offerings the church gets.

Meanwhile their neighbour India has Decriminalized homosexuality, banned Conversion therepy for gay people (which only handful of country had done), Recognised 3rd gender and now debating on legalising of same sex marriage.
These are great strides. As a Pakistani I can say that Indian is doing way better then Pakistan in most metrics. There's still work to be done like getting rid of the caste system that holds alot of people back. Any improving infrastructure and opportunities across the country too.

I don't know what caste my peers belongs to and whenever I go to village I see "Lower" caste and "Upper" caste people mingling with each other happily. But still you got some parts in India where it is prevalent (no denying) and the news you hear comes from those parts. Currently we are more days divided on "Class". if you're rich you would be treated well (despite your caste)

Many offences of blasphemy in Pakistan are mostly based on fraudulence, jealousy, hatred, etc. Greedy property developers steal land by accusing landowners of blasphemy. Traders accuse their competitors of blasphemy, drive them out of town and steal their clients.

I am an Indian, and some people out of passion, say that India and Pakistan were one and they should unite again. But sadly, Pakistan is a lost cause. India, though conservative in its own lane, is making quite a progress. The court has legalized homosexuality, and Pakistan cannot amend the blasphemy laws.

I was feeling so frustated with road conditions here in my neighborhood. Now after watching this I feel so lucky and disgusted at the same time. Thanks for reporting this. It's not a blessing it's a CURSE, I condemn this horrible law where 90 percent muslims are threatened by just 1 percent minority. As a muslim I want this law to be abolished completely and If someone is not fine with it, then there should be a new law similar to this instead it should focus on blasphemy of all religions (Christianity, Islam, Hinduism etc..), lastly the punishment must only be limited to a fine and an apology if proven guilty, in case of repeated violations, the perpetrator than must be jailed for maximum a year.
