    Back in the early 2000s my brother who was career military at the time had finally relocated back East near me after 15 years. We got to reunite and discuss our favorite nerd/geek topics. Both of us being fans of video games talked about what we played.
    When it came to RPGs, I bragged about Final Fantasy VII (my all-time favorite) and my brother raved about Lunar: Silver Star Story. This was his all-time favorite RPG. I always wanted to play it but never got around to it. Seeing this now...I'm just going to buckle down and play it. My feedback to him is way overdue! 😉

    I played this when it was first released on Sega CD back in the 90s. That intro cinematic and song is forever stuck in my head. It was such a leap forward in the way RPGs were presented! And I'd argue that the group dynamic between Vyse, Aika and Fina in Skies of Arcadia is the best every in a JRPG.

    • @chid255
      @chid255  7 месяцев назад

      The Sega CD intro is so good, the cinematic shots and animations. Man, if I was around to see it when it first came out, it certainly would've blown my mind!
      Great point bringing up Skies of Arcadia, which is another one of my all time favorite games! I would probably give the edge to Lunar personally, the team often conflicts with each other to the point of argument, and they're often not on the same page with how to proceed. But they're loyal to Alex, allowing him to lead, despite the disagreements. I thought that was pretty unique for this genre, I've never seen it before haha.
      There is a VERY strong argument for Skies taking the crown here though, I'd have to give it a replay sometime to compare, it's a masterpiece too!

    What a lovely video! I actually played & finished Lunar Silver Star for the first time thanks to the Android Port of the touch version last month and I'm very glad I did - so full of charm and good vibes. I'll admit Nash annoyed the heck out of me once the betrayal happened (I feel like he got let off too easily!) but the cast in general was so fun - just like you mentioned in the video I'd always find myself going out of my way to talk to every NPC & even going back to previous areas to see the dialogue changes since the devs put so much effort into something most players probably wouldn't even see (and it was a great way to give more party banter + characterization).
    I really hope Eternal Blue gets the same treatment one day, I've been trying the Sega CD version on an emulator recently and I have a feeling I may end up liking that one even more than Silver Star! But if not I'll eventually just emulate the PS1 version, I wouldn't want to miss it for anything seeing how much I loved the first game.

      Glad to hear you loved the game too, I didn't know they brought SSS Touch to Android recently! I went out and bought it immediately, it looks and plays a lot smoother than I expected. If I'm ever on a long road trip or plane, I know what I'll be doing haha. Thanks for watchin the video dude, I'm happy ya liked it.

    Great review, and I dig the transitions between segments, very cool. I've been a Lunar series fanboy since way back in the day when I got lucky and scored a used copy out of a Blockbuster's when they were clearing out their entire Sega CD stock. I fully admit to being jealous of the Ghaleon punching puppet; I somehow managed to get ahold of most of the available swag surrounding the series, but that's always eluded me.
    Anyways, I definitely agree with what I think is the final outcome of the review: this is an excellent RPG to savor if you prefer to have a little less emphasis on the world-ending evil, and a little bit more on the personality interplay between the heroes and their journey to be able to save the world.

    • @chid255
      @chid255  7 месяцев назад +1

      Great summary! Explaining why this game works is very difficult. This review, despite being 40 minutes long, is actually kind of a supercut for everything I wanted to talk about. I could honest to God, make a 2 hour video just on how this game handles its characters.
      I criticized the side villains in this review, but they work perfectly as a launch pad to give our main cast more time to shine. I think it may have been intentional, every time they show up, they're just a prop to put our heroes in a new predicament that forces them to work together or grow as characters.
      We really didn't need 4 great villains anyway, that requires considerable time to be taken away from our protagonists, which would damage the story. There's a risk where yeah people might enjoy all of the characters, but they don't fall in love with any of them, and as a result, the game might become forgettable.
      Wanted to touch up on that point a little more, as I consider the bland side villains to be kind of a good thing. Emphasis on side villains,
      *spoilers*
      Ghaleon is one of the best video game villains of all time imo. What an absolute badass haha
      Have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays bud! Thanks for watchin the video, I really appreciate it!

    Great review man! Ive only played the full game on gba which I really enjoyed - the Sega CD games always had me super interested but Ive started the first one so many times but the overworld is so huge and its tricky to get around haha. The psp version also drove me nuts with that music stopping when going into buildings ugh. Now I will need to go through the Saturn version and ps1!

    • @chid255
      @chid255  7 месяцев назад +1

      I think the 32 bit versions will be right up your alley! There's way more content than the GBA version, and lots of story changes as well. The overworld is significantly simplified from the Sega CD version. Some might not like that there's no enemy encounters, but I kinda like being able to walk around and relax until the dungeons. Also obviously no load screens for houses that cut out the music, it didn't bug me as much as you haha, but it was pretty annoying at times, especially since the PSP soundtrack is !excellent.
      Thanks for watchin Dez!

    Nice review, man! Agreed about the combat. It's pretty repetitive. I had immense trouble with the beginning of the game...I kept dying pretty early on. You gotta grind a bit to get your levels up so you can stop dying. My brother erased my save on this when I was at the end. I never went back and beat it. I should!

    • @chid255
      @chid255  7 месяцев назад +1

      Strangely, the first 5 hours is the hardest part of the game. Actually had a little trouble on one of the bosses and took me a few attempts to get it down.
      Once your party assembles, the challenge is almost completely gone. Lunar 2 really improved on the 1st game in that way. Although to be honest, I felt the combat burnout feeling tenfold there, as Dungeons and battles take more time to get through. Pretty interesting to think about for when I cover the second game!
      Thanks for watching dude! I agree about going back and finishing it, Lunar has a pretty epic finale, and the time commitment isn't quite as intimidating as some other RPGs, it's only about a 30 hour game. One day, it would be pretty dope if you even reviewed this game haha!

    • @Dongled
      @Dongled 7 месяцев назад +1

      It's a bucket list game to beat for me for sure! And I agree, the first 5 hours are brutal. But luckily the game has great characters and a really funny script to keep you engaged. @@chid255

    Im very familiar with the PSX complete version with the collectors set. This game is one of the jrpg pillars. Don't matter what system it's on, everyone has to play lunar silver Star and eternal blue. I do agree with you about the PSX voices being better. I also agree with you about the 2D pixel graphics being better then these flashy modern Gen graphics. Very good review and I'm giving you a full watch on this video because it's that good.

      @@chid255 ohh I'm sure if you do blue one day, it will give you another migraine lol but regardless this was a fair review and completely not biased at all. I always got an Albert Odyssey and grandia vibe from lunar silver Star and eternal blue. Btw since you covered the diff ports of lunar silver Star, any thoughts on lunar legend on the GBA? I played it and while it was another port of silver Star and not too different from the other ports, I did enjoy the lunar legend port having those street fighter super combo gauges where you build up the energy and release a super combo ultimate attack individually for each character. That was a great addition to the GBA version imo

    • @chid255
      @chid255  7 месяцев назад +1

      @LordBeerusHakaiGod that makes sense that it would give Grandia vibes! As Game Arts also made that game.
      I haven't played Lunar Legend yet, but I've seen some of it. They had some interesting story changes, like Nash showing up super early while you're still in Burg. The super attacks were also in Silver Star Harmony as well, must've slipped my mind and forgot to mention that! They're pretty rad, although it alone makes Harmony by far the easiest version of Lunar, I didn't die a single time on my first playthrough haha. Mia's special move literally makes you invincible for 3 turns, yeah, pretty OP!
      I think Lunar Legend is the cheapest version to get, so if I see it in the wild it'll be an instant purchase.

      That's a good question, I personally think the Playstation version is the best of the lot. I haven't tried the Sega CD version yet, but apparently a lot was cut. The PSP remake is also very good, despite it having very minor flaws not present on the PS1.
